‘Crime Watch’ host cleared of contemptWednesday, July 6 2011After a week of anticipation, CrimeWatch host, Ian Alleyne, has been cleared of any allegations of contempt of court.
Alleyne was subpoenaed on June 27, to appear before Justice Prakash Moosai following statements he made on his show relating to the trial of Laventille resident, Barry Alphonso. As a result, Alleyne had been asked to produce recordings of his programme.
Television station CNC3 was also subpoenaed for running a similar programme which was also said to have had the potential of prejudicing the case.
At yesterday’s hearing in the Port-of-Spain Assizes, State Prosecutor Brent Winter — who held on behalf of Prosecutor Jeron Joseph — informed the court that after reviewing the material regarding Alleyne’s statements, no evidence was discovered which could be deemed contemptuous.
In light of this, defence attorney Wayne Sturge, who represented Alphonso’s interests, indicated that he would not be contesting the issue.
However, the fate of CNC3 is still unclear as the recordings provided by the TV Station had yet to be reviewed by the relevant parties in the matter. As a result CNC3 will return to court on July 12.
