It really shoulda get painted yellow....

*Sigh*
Quote
TWO weeks after a 12-year-old pupil of the Barataria South Secondary School was robbed of his Government-issued laptop computer in San Juan, the device is yet to be located.

Police said the laptop was one of thousands distributed to successful Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) pupils as part of the People's Partnership Government's campaign promise.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) was awarded an $83 million contract to supply 24,000 fully-loaded laptops.

According to police, the computer, which was the first to be reportedly stolen, up to late yesterday could not be traced, despite previous assurances by Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh the devices could be traced to their precise location if stolen.

In a two-page advertisement in the daily newspapers early September, Gopeesingh said Computrace software, which was expected to be installed in the laptops, allows "us to spot the location of a stolen computer by tracing the IP (Internet Protocol) address when it logs on. And it permits us to remote-wipe, which erases all material off a stolen computer."

He also stated schools will provide a safe place to store computers for children who prefer not to travel home with the devices.

On November 4, the victim, who is a Form One pupil, reported to police that around 2.35 p.m. that day, he was walking west along Bissessar Street, off Don Miguel Road, when a man approached from behind.

Without warning, the suspect unzipped the boy's school bag, which he had on his back, and took out the laptop before escaping on foot.

Officers believe the suspect was one of three men who were liming on the roadway when the schoolboy walked past the group.

The victim, police said, saw a police vehicle passing shortly after the incident and informed the officers about what had transpired. Police immediately went in search of the three men but they could not be found.

The matter was reported to the school, and a report was submitted to the Information Communication and Technology Unit at the Ministry of Education, the Express was told. Calls to Gopeesingh's cell phone went unanswered late yesterday.

Worse yet dey shut down SIA so resources even tighter.

But....question. Do you think that by it being reported in the newspapers...that more would be stolen?

From a lil research the computrace software is built into the bios... a simple hard drive wipe wouldn't erase...it re-installs, regardless of the formatting & new O/S install...
So is either the thief or the "new owner" stay offline or flash the bios.

So exactly what is yuh point?  The person he selling it to wouldn't know how to flash the bios?  The average man who thiefing car eh going and chop it up or ship it out either... but that ent stopping him from selling it to somebody else who know how to.

Stolen SEA laptop recovered
Sunday, November 21 2010

The SEA laptop which was recently stolen from a Form One student in the Barataria area, has been recovered by the police, a release from Ample advertising agency on behalf of Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh stated yesterday.

The agency indicated that it was due to the security software application installed in the computer to help in exactly this kind of situation.

The media release said that the minister was high in praise for the speedy work done by officials of his ministry, as well as by the police officers involved.

“This proves that the system works, and that the combination of technology and conscientious officials of the State is an unbeatable force to protect both our students and the laptops they recently received from us,” Gopeesingh was quoted as stating.

According to the release, the minister said that the laptop was stolen from the bag of a Barataria South Secondary School student two weeks ago on Don Miguel Road, San Juan. The report, however, was made to the ministry only on Friday, and this was immediately followed by a visit to the school by a ministry IT Manager, Calvin Ramnath. He contacted the technicians who make and operate the Computrace software which is installed in all the laptops distributed by the ministry.

Computrace activated their ‘watch’, and within a couple hours the stolen computer was spotted when it was used to log-on to the internet. Computrace personnel were able to pinpoint the exact location of the computer. They notified the police, and officers of the Police Cyber Unit as well as from the Barataria Police Station swooped down on the address identified to find the computer. It was being used by a local computer technician who said that it had been brought to him for repairs and he was logging on to the net to effect the repairs.

The laptop is now in Police custody with investigations continuing, and the student and his parents are reportedly greatly relieved to know that the computer will soon be back with them.

I have to begrudgingly give them their due... as foolhearty as I maintain the program to be, I must say that the security features seems to have worked in this instance.

After reading about the system, it seems it really hard to beat that tracking system, re-installs wont wipe it off  :o, lol, it really make no sense trying to thief that, too much headache, especially if u have no clue about computers

"Core Technology

The ComputraceOne Agent is a small software client that can be embedded into the BIOS firmware “at the factory”, or installed like most software applications onto the hard drive of a computer. When embedded in the BIOS of computers by major OEMs, such as Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, Motion Computing, Panasonic and Toshiba, the ComputraceOne Agent can survive operating system re-installations, hard drive reformats and even hard drive replacements.

The ability to withstand these changes is critical in order to survive unauthorised removal attempts as well as work seamlessly with customers' break/fix and IMAC (Install/Move/Add/Change) processes.

Here's How It Works

The ComputraceOne application is loaded on the hard drive of a computer while support for the ComputraceOne agent is embedded in the BIOS or firmware. If the hard drive is reformatted or replaced, the ComputraceOne Agent support in the BIOS rebuilds the necessary application files on the hard drive as required by the customer."

Wha bout BIOS flashes?

flashing the bios wont work either  :( , Kamla was right don't bother stealing it.

Q: What happens if I flash my BIOS? Will I need to reinstall ComputraceOne?

A: No. If the persistence module in the BIOS has been enabled, ComputraceOne’s self-healing feature will repair the agent software and your notebook will still be protected. The enable/disable state of the persistence module is not stored in the flashable part of the BIOS. .

9 months for laptop
By Jensen LaVende jlavende@trinidadexpress.com

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/9_months_for_laptop-111016389.html

KENRICK TELESFORD, one of two men charged with receiving a stolen Government-issued Hewlett-Packard (HP) laptop, was sentenced to nine months hard labour yesterday.

Telesford, 18, of Sixth Avenue, Malick, Barataria pleaded guilty to the charge when he first appeared in court on November 22 along with Santa Cruz resident, 27-year-old Tacey Johnson.

In passing sentence Magistrate Anna Ryan told Telesford that a "hands off attitude" must be taken when it comes to the stealing of the laptops, which were issued to Form One pupils having completed the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA).

"Persons should be deterred from going after their laptops," Ryan added as she ordered that Telesford be sent to jail and the computer returned to the 12-year-old First Form pupil of the Barataria South Secondary School.

Telesford, who represented himself, told the Magistrate that he was "truly sorry" adding that if given a second chance he would go out there and support his family and "mine my step-child".

In his statement read out to the Magistrate by Court Prosecutor Sgt Rawle Ramharrack, Telesford, a CD vendor said that he was approached by another man who asked for his help in selling the laptop. Telesford complied and was paid $200 out of the $900 he sold the black HP laptop for.

Telesford and Johnson, an Information Technology technician, were charged with receiving the computer on November 5 – one day after the pupil was robbed in San Juan as he made his way home from school. Johnson, who pleaded not guilty, would return to court on December 6.

The men were charged by PC Ralph Ramroop of the Barataria CID who was commended by Ryan for his diligence and good work in arresting the men and recovering the laptop.

Another man is expected to appear in court later this week charged with receiving the laptop after he surrendered to the police yesterday. The 17-year-old from the San Juan area would be placed on several identification parades before he is charged.
