$25,000 up for grabs in North East amateur football tournament.
North East Stars Press Release.

DIRECTV, together with Japs Fried Chicken and North East Stars F.C. launched what is believed to be the most lucrative amateur football competition in Trinidad & Tobago. The competition will be by invitation only and will see many of the North East regional champions compete for a first prize of $25,000.

The tournament, DIRECTV North East Stars Champion of Champions Invitational Football Tournament, was launched on Wednesday 1st December at the Japs Fried Chicken head office in Sangre Grande.

At the launch, the 8 competing teams were drawn into two groups of four. Each team will play 3 matches and at the end of the 12 match group stages, the teams topping each group will move forward to the semi finals on Boxing Day, 27th December and the final on January 1st.

Matches are due to commence on Thursday 9th December at the Manzanilla Recreation Grounds.

The tournament was devised by Darryl Mahabir, owner of Japs Fried Chicken and President of DIRECTV North East Stars. "I am passionate about supporting local football and our communities" said Mahabir. "It is essential to the development of the professional league to support amateur football." Mahabir went on to explain why he was offering a cash prize. "These footballers do not play for money, but for the love of the game. They buy their own uniforms and equipment.

I believe in rewarding excellence, and this tournament will provide a cash prize unheard of in amateur football. These teams began the season playing for fun, and now find a real cash prize on offer to reward their season long endeavours. This is a unique tournament and we hope to see it becoming an annual event on the national football calendar."

Mahabir continued "It is essential to the development of DIRECTV North East Stars to build a bond between the club and our key stakeholders, the North East community and the local amateur teams, who we hope will provide us with a supply of talent who will one day wear the North East Stars, or even the National uniform. By playing in a tournament of this calibre, we hope to give these footballers exposure to a high profile, high stakes competition that will assist in their development"

North East Stars C.E.O. Brent Sancho said that there are less obvious benefits to the competing teams. "We are fortunate at North East Stars to benefit from the financial support of DIRECTV, Carib, Sports& Games, Toyota and Japs Fried Chicken.

These teams do not have such corporate support. We are hoping that businesses will step forward and offer some sponsorship to the teams competing for the Champion of Champions trophy. This is the biggest amateur tournament in Trinidad & Tobago and we hope the crowds will come out to support their local teams"

Stars Operations Director, Kevin Harrison said " We believe that Football in the Community can bring real benefits to the people in the North East Region. Aside from encouraging participation in sport, tournaments such as this bring real pride to the region.

We often hear that one of the causes in crime is lack of entertainment. We will be providing 14 matches over the next 24 days, which will all have local interest. There will be a bar at the matches and the final at Ojoe Rd will include live artists performing after the match."

The 8 invited teams have been selected to represent the cream of North East Regional football and will be keen to start 2011 with a $25,000 victory on New Years Day. Group A teams are Quash Trace Ball Players, Mayaro Spurs, G.Madrid & Valencia Lions Youth F.C. while Group B teams are Matura Utd, Express F.C., Slappers & Settlement Utd.

Double header match days are scheduled for the 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th and 21st December in Manzanilla. Semi Finals will take place on 27th December at Ojoe Rd Recreational Grounds, Sangre Grande. The New Years Day Final at Ojoe Road also aims to be the launch of the 2011 carnival season in the North East. "We will have a big name artist performing and aim to create a real party atmosphere" said Harrison.

Mr Quincy Luces, Sangre Grande Regional Councillor said at the launch "We are working with DIRECTV North East Stars to bring football to Sangre Grande and establish a premier facility to ensure football stays in Sangre Grande." He went on to say "Both venues will be prepared and ready for the tournament as it is important to bring back community football events to the region"

DIRECTV representative, Lindsay Boodoo said " We at DIRECTV recognise the importance of a prominent football team to a community. We congratulate North East Stars for giving this opportunity to minor league football teams to showcase their talent.

We are proud to support these initiatives. It is paramount to DIRECTV to forge a closer bond with communities." DIRECTV will be providing door prizes of free DIRECTV installation & 2 months free subscription at the semi final and final matches.

North East Events Coordinator, Khaty Martin-Jones added "This tournament will bring a lot of interest to the North East Region. It is part of a very busy period for the club where we are interacting with the community and supporting the Digicel Pro Leagues HOPE project.

We are having a Christmas extravaganza fun day, with free toys and goodie bags for children and there will be top artists performing live on Sunday 19thDecember, 2010. We will also be organising a food collection at the final day of our MaltaCarib coaching school on the 18th December.

Mahabir added "None of our work would be possible without the support of our sponsors. They are fully behind this clubs commitment to the people of Sangre Grande and the North East.

I urge people to reward that support by coming to the events and taking note of the offers available from DIRECTV and spending some money at the Carib bar! Our other sponsors, such as Toyota and Sports & Games will also be on hand to promote their products."

I really really hope North East get through... because they doing all de right things.
Their strategy this year off the field is spot on. Other clubs need to pay attention. This is how you get positive publicity, and in turn attract more sponsors. They will be able to develop their infrastructure and attract better players and coaches. In the longer term, this will hopefully attract more fans and hopefully develop a large permanent fan base in Grande and environs... de way they going people from all over will support them as they second team... if they manage to get a grounds and start filling it up week in and week out eventually they will turn a profit.
this is how you become sustainable as a football club... and if they fail (which i don't even want to think about) i fear for the future prospects and overall viability of professional football in TnT. we done shaky arready
THE BEATINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES

North East Stars Press Release.

The DIRECTV North East Stars Champion of Champions Invitation Football Tournament kicked off on 9th December with a clash between Mayaro Spurs & Quash Trace.

Despite poor weather conditions, over 750 spectators have been attending the matches in Manzanilla. Coops,
All I can say that it really does not matter if the Pros play. There are no longer any big international amateur competition, like the Olimpics in your days. Now if some of them so called amateurs have the inclination to play college soccer in the US, then that is a problem. Other than that, play ball.

It just dawned on me may be it was unfair to other teams, don't know if it was stipulated that useing Pros was allowed so the other teams had the same options plus there appear to be some sort of double standard the PFL/clubs allowing players to play in that tournament.
Why this has dawned on me is because i saw earlier on where Marvin Oliver and some other players were penalised by their club for doing work in their community.

You will notice that its North East players playing in a competition organised by North East, so its fair to assume they have permission. Also, note that all 3 are local boys and are representing their community. The competition is for amateur teams i.e teams that do not pay players(like the National team lol) Other ProLeague clubs may forbid their players from these kind of tournaments, but if permission is given there's no problem.

$25,000 first prize and Shurwayne Winchester bringing brass back to Sangre Grande all in one night!‏
North East Stars Press Release.

The DIRECTV North East Stars Champion of Champions Invitation Football Tournament final takes place on New Years Day with a clash between Matura United & Slappers International.

The teams fought their way through the group stages and triumphed over G.Madrid and Mayaro Spurs to contest the $25,000 first prize. Mayaro Spurs, and Biche outfit, G. Madrid will play to decide who wins the $3,000 third prize and $1,500 fourth prize.

The tournament, believed to be the richest amateur football tournament ever played in T&T, with total prize monies of $38,700, is the brainchild of North East Stars President, Darryl Mahabir, owner of Japs Fried Chicken. "This event proves that the North East Region can host big events" said Mahabir.

"For so often it seems this region is forgotten by promoters. North East Stars main sponsors, DIRECTV and my staff were determined to deliver an exciting football competition backed by superb live entertainment to launch the 2011 carnival season in Sangre Grande."

The third place play-off will kick off at 2pm and the final will begin at 4pm. Slappers International from Arima probably were not expected to reach the final after finding themselves 3-0 down in their first match. However they fought back to earn a 4-4 draw and continued from strength to strength to contest the $25,000 first prize against Matura United, with the runners up receiving $7,500.

North East Stars' Kendal Velux is hoping his goal of the tournament won't be bettered, so he receives the $200 best goal award, while he is also in contention for the $500 most valuable player award. There is also a $1,000 prize for the best team manager and two cases of Carib for the best supported team.

Large crowds are expected to see which team wins the trophy and, no doubt, the licensed bar supplied by Carib will prevent the cheering fans from getting sore throats!

After the trophy presentations, the event host, Katrina,co host of CNC 3's new spring show, Sancho's Soccerama, will introduce the evenings dazzling entertainment.

With top D.J.'s, Boom Champions 94.1's Sonny Bling and 102.1's Galan setting the pace, the crowd will be eagerly awaiting the appearance on stage of Road March kings, J.W. & Blaze, T.C., top soca artist Shal Marshall and, bringing brass back to Sangre Grande, Shurwayne Winchester and the big band sound of Y.O.U.

"This is all about bringing a top class event to the North East at an affordable price" said North Easts' events coordinator, Khaty Martin-Jones "Admission to the event is only $25 before 5pm and $50 after 5pm. We have food retailers and the Carib beer tent, so be prepared to stay all evening, as there's no re-entry!"

"As usual, we have to thank our superb sponsors for their support and belief in the North East Region." said Operations Director Kevin Harrison. "DIRECTV, as always, have excelled themselves in their assistance.

Carib, once again, will make sure supporters are provided with excellent bar facilities. The event also would not be possible without the help of our friends from Toyota, Hadco and, of course, Japs Fried
Chicken"

Stars C.E.O. Brent Sancho said "I'm delighted that Dexter Skeene, C.E.O. of the Pro League will be one of our V.I.P.s on the night. I know Dexter is keen to see professional football return to Sangre Grande, and he fully appreciates the important role that amateur football plays in developing talent.

I'm sure he will be blown away by the passion for football that exists in the North East community."

The event begins on January 1st at 2pm at Ojoe Road Recreational Grounds, Sangre Grande and will end around midnight. Admission is $25 before 5pm and $50 after. There will be no re-entry allowed.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.

It is nice to see a team taking the initiate on its own to do positive things with its fan base. Allyuh don't jump on Dexter, he has to deal with TTFF and jack. But NE doing all the right thing to stay in touch and keep their fan base happy. The rest of the teams should try their formula. Dexter should not have to tell them that. Is a pity NE does not have a proper ground. They need it badly for them to progress as a real pro team. Good Luck Stars!!!!!

$25,000 New Years Day victory.
North East Stars Press Release.

Amateur footballers from Matura Re-United had a fantastic start to 2011 as they collected a $25,000 cash prize after winning the DIRECTV North East Stars Champion of Champions Trophy at Ojoe Rd on New Years Day.

The team overcame a strong challenge from Slappers United, finally winning an exciting penalty shootout after both teams failed to gain an advantage during open play.

The match was the culmination of an exciting 3 week tournament that saw 8 amateur teams from the North East region, who had already won trophies this year, battle out to be the Champion of Champions.

The competition was the brainchild of North East Stars President, Darryl Mahabir, owner of Japs Fried Chicken and was sponsored by DIRECTV.

"I am fortunate enough to have a successful business across the North East region and wanted to reward the loyalty of my customers by providing their local amateur teams with a chance to play for the biggest amateur cash prize in the country" said Mahabir.

"However, now that I have a branch opened in San Juan, it looks like next years competion will have to be even bigger!"

But the day wasn't all football. After the trophy presentation, radio DJs, Gail Ann and Sonny Bling got the party started with CNC3's Katrina, or Katy G as she is better known, hosting the entertainment.

Katrina, co-host of the new football entertainment show, Sancho's Soccerama which will be going out on CNC3 after carnival, introduced a host of performers live on stage.

JW whipped the crowd into a frenzy with an exciting performance, while Shal Marshal and T.C. kept the party going. Shurwayne Winchester and his band Y.O.U. ended the event with a superb set that saw the crowd of 1500 launch carnival season in the North East in style.

North East Stars C.E.O., Brent Sancho said "Its hugely important to the club to ensure we provide a service to our community. We are fortunate to have such generous sponsors who are keen to work with us to provide events like this."

Sancho was particularly proud that entrance to whole event started at $25 for adults. "Where could you see this kind of live entertainment and an exciting football match for $25?"

"Our sponsors have been superb" said Operations Director Kevin Harrison. "DIRECTV are commited to supporting events for the people of this region.

Carib provided a beer tent and Toyota helped to promote the event. We also have to thank Sangre Grande Regional Corporation for their assistance to make this happen. DIRECTV North East Stars are proud to be part of the North East community."

Harrison said that other businesses are keen to add their support for community projects. " This year, North East Stars have shown just what is possible by working in the community.

Now, many other businesses are keen to assist in our community programmes. We have a massive programme of events planned for 2011, touching many areas, including the elderly, school children, victims of domestic violence as well as assisting orphanages and cancer charities."

"Its going to be a busy year" said Events Coordinator Khaty Martin-Jones " We will continue to lead the way in reaching out to our community."

DIRECTV North East Stars now turn their focus onto their trophy winning efforts as they play San Juan Jabloteh in the F.A. Trophy on 26th January.

"We're hoping our supporters will travel down to Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya to give the boys some support" said Mahabir "We're playing for our 2nd trophy of the season and it will be nice to see our success in the community mirrored on the football field."
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
