‘Trini Rocket’ shatters dragster record
T&T Guardian

Sheldon “Trinidad Rocket” Bissessar has again hit the mark at world level in dragster racing.

Sheldon “Trinidad Rocket” Bissessar has again hit the mark at world level in dragster racing. Racing in Round Two at the first IHRA Nitro Jam event for 2011 at Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida, USA. Bissessar shattered his own IHRA world record by a full 10 hundreths of a second, blowing away with a 5.68-second pass at 238mph. The announcer acknowledged that this was the fastest top dragster pass in history and track officials eagerly anticipated the mandatory backup run which has to be within 1% of the elapsed time. This meant that Bissessar had to run at least a 5.74 at the same race meet for the record to become official. According to IHRA top official, Aaron Polburn this run could be done during the unrestricted qualifying passes or dial-up elimination rounds.

When Bissessar returned to the pits, however, the oil catch can was full indicating a loss of compression. When the checks were done crew chief Aaron Sipple confirmed that a cylinder was blown. With roughly one hour before the third and final qualifying run an engine rebuild was necessary. Within the first 15 minutes the Supercharger assembly was removed and one of the heads unbolted. One piston was cracked and partially disintegrated, rupturing the rings and damaging the cylinder sleeve walls. The components were replaced and the engine was ready to be started as the calls were being made for the Top Dragster class. On the first attempt the engine came to life as the team breathed a huge sigh of relief.  The first pass of the day by Bissessar yielded a 5.87-second time putting him in the number one qualifying position.

Melissa Hutson came close in the first qualifying round with a time of 5.89 seconds, taking the number two spot with her Snyder Motorsports Top Dragster—their first five second pass ever! With a benchmark run established and track conditions at near perfect, with ambient temperatures in the high 50s (F), crew Chief Aaron Sipple decided that it was time to turn up the power and see how fast the Rocket could go.
Round three came as quite a surprise when a timer delay malfunction resulted in the car failing to launch at the starting line well after the lights came down.

Although the run could have been made, the track officials signaled to cut the engine and back the car off as too much time had already passed and the race was over. Bissessar had just one more shot in the first elimination run to back up the World Record pass. The night wore on with the IHRA Nitro Jam show and remaining competition passes where the jet trucks, prostalgia cars, injected alcohol and top fuel cars excited the packed stands. By the time the runs were all made, track temperatures were dropping, making it dangerous to attempt any further competition rounds.

The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
