Valencia coach Unai Emery lamented his side’s second half performance after they surrendered a two-goal lead to crash out of the Copa del Rey 4-2 to Villarreal.
Ever Banega and Roberto Soldado had given the visitors a comfortable lead at the break, but goals from Giuseppe Rossi (2), Santi Cazorla and Marco Ruben saw the Yellow Submarine come storming back.
Emery was noticeably distraught in the aftermath of the contest, moaning to the press, “During the break we talked about past experiences and how it was important to keep our intensity, and with a dubious penalty they came back into the game.
“With a combination of our mistakes and the good play of Villarreal, we have lost. It is a painful defeat against a good opponent. Everyone is hurting. I am very self-critical.”
Villarreal can now look forward to a quarter-final meeting with Sevilla.
