Bateau and Cyrus for Kansas City trial

Football duo for Kansas City trial
By Walter Alibey (T&T Newsday)

TRINIDAD and Tobago footballers Sheldon Bateau of San Juan Jabloteh and Daneil Cyrus of FC Santa Rosa have been invited to trials with Major League Soccer team Kansas City Wizards.

The duo will join the club for pre-season training starting January 24.

Both Bateau and Cyrus who are aiming at entry into the professional football league this year, were impressive during the City’s visit here in Trinidad last month.

Cyrus has since been on-loan to Caledonia AIA-, another team in the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League.

Both players participated at the FIFA Under- 17 World Cup in South Korea four years ago (2007) as well as the FIFA Under- 20 World Championship in Egypt in 2009.

Bateau is currently captain of the national Under-20 team, while Cyrus represented the country at Under- 21 and senior levels.

The players will leave for Kansas for their one-month trial soon but, however, club director and owner Keith Look Loy said they will be kept on further if they make it past the allotted time.

“We are hopeful that they will be given a contract by the club and we are confident that they are capable of achieving this. “

According to Look Loy who is chairman of the technical committee of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF), the Kansas City officials were also interested in a number of other players from the club, particularly 15-year-old Dwayne Muckette.

The City’s only deterrent in snatching Muckette was FIFA’s rule which prevented juniors from moving with their families to another country because of football, Look Loy pointed out.

What a silly pretentious name.

Good luck to both regardless, this is a tremendous opportunity and I hope they give it their all.

Glad for them, best of luck.

Hopefully Seattle call back Akeem Adams too.

Now is Duane Muckette the under 17 captain...because on several reports they have both a Karl Muckette as captain and then a Duane Muckette?

It might not be long before we have a pair of Sporting Kansas City players who wear this national team shirt.

Earlier in the afternoon on Saturday, Charles Gooch from The Full 90 tweeted the link to a story out of Trinidad & Tobago about a pair of players that have been invited on trials to join Sporting Kansas City later this month when they open their preseason training.

The article gives a bit more information on a pair of players that caught the eye of Sporting KC technical director/head coach Peter Vermes during last month's scouting combine in Trinidad - Sheldon Bateau and Daneil Cyrus.

Up until these names came out a few weeks ago, there had been very little made public about any potential targets for SKC this offseason. The Daily Wiz reported of the club's interest in French defender Aurelien Collin in early December, and between those times and even up until now, there has been virtually no other names to speak of. I've heard a name here and there, but nothing concrete to post about and alarm the troops.

So, less than a week before the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, it is nice to finally have a couple of names to discuss and think about. We know that next Thursday the team will have three picks in the SuperDraft, so we'll potentially have three more guys via that route. But, the only player guaranteed to be signed and make the team, really, will be the first round choice (number 10 overall). More than anything, though, Bateau and Cyrus are just something to talk about at long last.

So, now that we finally have a couple targets to discuss, let's get to it. All the information on Bateau and Cyrus to be had via the interwebs after the jump...

Sheldon Bateau

Age: 19
Height: 6'1"
Current Club: San Juan Jabloteh
International Experience: T&T U-17 World Cup ('07) - 2 games, T&T U-20 World Cup ('09) - 1 game, current captain of T&T U-20 national team
Position: Bateau is listed by multiple player database outlets as a defender, specifically a central defender by some. But, in an interview that That at The Back Post had with Vermes immediately following the comine, Vermes said "he plays in the midfield."

Random information: In this discussion forum post from December 2008, Bateau is talked about as "the total package." Obviously, this is a not a sanctioned article from a news outlet, and as it lists him as 6'3" as a 17-year old, (the 6'1" listed above comes from a current player database) that could tell you just how much credence to take from the seemingly over-zealous fan. The point is, though, that Bateau is highly thought of in an improving football nation, and has been for some time.

Though none of the games have gone the way of his side, he has played in and started three CONCACAF Champions League games - a competition in which SKC fans hope to take a part in come 2012 and beyond.

Daneil Cyrus

Age: 20
Height: 6'3-1/2"
Current Club: Caledonia AIA (on loan from FC Santa Rosa)
International Experience: T&T U-17 World Cup ('07) - 3 games, T&T U-20 World Cup ('09) - 3 games, T&T senior national team - 13 games, regular starter for senior team
Position: Cyrus is listed by most as a defender, and specifically a central defender - just like Bateau.

Random information: Cyrus goes by the nickname "Cha Cha." Yes, seriously.

Was a striker until he reached the U-17 level, when he was converted to a central defender.

Has been named to the SWO T&T Team of the Month by SOCAWarriors.net, a T&T-specific blog. This particular team of the month is comprised of players from all levels of T&T national teams, based upon recent play for both their club teams and country.

One of the team of the month posts had this to say about Cyrus:

"His only deficiency is his eagerness to get the ball off his feet and in the process he sometimes makes bad judgments with his passing, something which I'm sure is linked to his inexperience."

Given the fact that he is still only 20 years old and has only played in defense for three years, give or take some months, it sounds like his game as a whole has evolved, thus I expect this current deficiency to do so, too.

Cyrus has yet to notch his first senior national team goal, but he has been credited with a handful of goals in the past couple years for his club team, so one would be lead to believe that he either still possesses that attacking mindset from his days as a striker, or he is a threat on set pieces. Or, in a perfect world, both could be the case.

------------------------

Keep in mind that similar trials in 2010 were how guys like Ryan Smith, Craig Rocastle and Stephane Auvray made the 2010 Kansas City Wizards squad out of preseason training. Then again, didn't Pablo Escobar come out of that, too?

Either way, it will be interesting to see how this pair performs in January and February 2011, how they mesh with the current players on the roster, and whether they can transition previous success on the club and country levels to a contract in Major League Soccer.

If either sounds more likely to be offered a contract next month, Cyrus sounds like the player further along in his development, and one that could possibly help in the not-so-distant future; whereas as Bateau seems a bit more of a prospect for the future. One thing that each player does have going for them, though, is the fact that they will have someone that each has a prior relationship and playing experience with to go through this process in a foreign country, in each other.

According to an interview I read with their president, the name changed b/c they would like to become an all-around sports club, like Barcelona or Real Madrid. I.E. they don't only want to be a football team, but a rugby side, a volleyball team, a lacrosse team, etc.

Bateau eager for Sporting chance.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

National Under-20 captain Sheldon Bateau is waiting with bated breath for the opportunity to show coaches at Sporting Kansas what he’s capable of doing when he visits the club for trial alongside T&T teammate Daniel Cyrus later this month.

Both players were spotted by Sporting head coach Peter Vermes at a combine hosted by 1st Santa Rosa FC last month and have been invited to take part in another trial.

“It’s something I’ve been looking forward to and I think it’s a great opportunity for me to go out there and hopefully perform well and earn a contract. “The level will be quite good and it will definitely allow me to raise my game.

One of the main things I’m focusing now is trying to lead the Under-20 team  to another World Cup this year but of course if the chance is there for me to move on to a higher league then I’m going to give it my all,” said Bateau.

The ex-Fatima College and San Juan Jabloteh player also appeared for T&T at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in 2007 and the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and has also lined up for the T&T Olympic team.

Vermes noted: “We had about 50 players over five days and the talent was good. “We have two younger guys and possibly a third. One of the players is Cyrus and he’s played for the full team and he looks to be a good player.

There’s another player by the name of (Sheldon) Bateau and he plays in midfield. He’s 19 and has also played for the national youth  teams and he’s also on the verge of the full team.”
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Theyre hoping to be OFFERED a contract? Are they not under contract with their respective Trini clubs?

I never hear about transfer fees when it comes to our local players being signed by a foreign club

Don't worry, there are usually transfer fees involved. For example, it's been stated on here in the past that that is how W Connection makes their money.

How have the Trinidadians looked?

Daneil Cyrus - played well today. We put him in central defense where it really the place we brought him in to look at. He was very solid, him and Matt Besler wound up being a pretty good combination between the two of them. They played well. He's uncanny because when you watch him run you think he is not very fast but he never gets beat.

Sheldon Bateau -He had a assist on Jack's goal. His situation is that he is going to a take a little time trying to get used to our system a little bit and also tactically, but he is definitely a physical presence. Very good athlete, he has a good passing idea around the field but just positionaly he needs to be a little bit better.

The manager indicated that there are anywhere from six to 10 roster spots that are currently up in the air. According to him, the new faces making the strongest case for themselves are Daneil Cyrus, Scott Lorenz, draftee C.J. Sapong and academy product Kevin Ellis. Vermes confirmed that the first two players are on the club’s Discovery list.

Sporting Kansas City and the Colorado Rapids battled to a 0-0 tie Saturday in preseason action from Arizona. Sporting held the defending MLS Cup champions scoreless and were the aggressors for most of the contest, which consisted of two 45-minute sessions and an additional 30-minute session.

Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said the following after the contest:

"We played three segments today with three different mixtures of players. Every team competed well, and we moved some guys around into different positions. At this stage, we want to make sure we compete well and that we get a certain amount of time for each guy. We were also finalizing our evaluation of the different guys we have in camp on trial. We were able to do all three. It’s slowly growing and getting to where we need to be for the regular season."

"Defensively I thought we were better today. We didn’t really give up too much to Colorado. We were stronger in the midfield, and our attacking options are starting to get better timing. It was good in different ways."

First 60 minutes: Jimmy Nielsen (Eric Kronberg 46), Michael Harrington, Daneil Cyrus, Julio Cesar Santos Correa, Roger Espinoza, Michal Mravec, Milos Stojcev, Davy Arnaud, Kei Kamara, Teal Bunbury, Omar Bravo

Next 30 minutes: Eric Kronberg, Luke Sassano, Shavar Thomas, Matt Besler, Scott Lorenz, Gor Kirakosyan (Konrad Warzycha 80), Craig Rocastle, Stephane Auvray, Birahim Diop, Chance Myers, Adda Djeziri

Final 30 minutes: Jon Kempin, Kevin Ellis, Mike Jones, Calum Butcher, Omar Colley, Korede Aiyegbusi, Sheldon Bateau, Jack Jewsbury, Graham Zusi, C.J. Sapong, Travis Bowen

Dynamo dominate Kansas City in exhibition
By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ
Copyright 2011 Houston Chronicle

On the brink of their third consecutive shutout, the Dynamo settled for their third victory of the preseason while dominating Sporting Kansas City 3-1 at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix.

Instead of the usual two, 45-minute halves, the teams played three periods of 30 minutes. Four days after demolishing FC Dallas 4-0, the Dynamo led Kansas City 3-0 heading into the final minute Tuesday.

The Dynamo took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Kansas City’s Daneil Cyrus scored an own-goal. After rookie Will Bruin drew a penalty, Jason Garey converted in the 37th minute to put the Dynamo ahead 2-0.

Andrew Hainault capped the Dynamo’s scoring in the 84th minute.

In the final minute, Chance Myers scored for Sporting Kansas City to end the Dynamo’s scoreless streak this spring.

Kansas City forward and promising U.S. national team player Teal Bunbury suffered an elbow injury and was rushed to a local hospital.

The 20-year-old Bunbury scored on a penalty kick for the U.S. in a 1-1 exhibition draw against Chile on Jan. 22 in Los Angeles. It was his second appearance for the national team.
