Four men's soccer players invited to USL Player Combine
CofCSports.com

Four College of Charleston men's soccer seniors will have the opportunity to showcase their soccer abilities at the United Soccer Leagues Player Combine presented by Umbro. Domestic and international scouts as well as professional coaches will be on hand in Charleston's own Blackbaud Stadium - home of the 2010 USL-2 Champion Charleston Battery.

CofC seniors Sean Bateau (Port of Spain, Trinidad), Sean Flatley (Virginia Beach, Va.), Justin Fojo (Port of Spain, Trinidad) and Kareem Yearwood (Sou Sou Lands, Tobago) have all been invited to participate in the combine.

"I'm very happy for each of these players, as it allows them to be on a stage to earn a professional contract," said CofC head coach Ralph Lundy. "They have each put in a lot of time to our program and it's exciting to see them get rewarded in this way."

To date, more than 125 players have gone on to sign professional contracts with USL, MLS and international squads since the debut of the USL Men's Combine in 2006. The event attracts the top U23 talent from throughout North America, with many of the participants coming from the USL Premier Development League.

The combine takes place this weekend, from Thursday, Jan. 20 through Sunday, Jan. 23 and will feature training sessions for both goalkeepers and field players as well as full-speed games between strategically picked combine participants.

The College of Charleston also had four players in the Combine.  Justin Fojo, Sean Bateau, Sean Flatley, and Kareem Yearwood.  Fojo and Bateau benefited from playing on the same team at the combine.  Fojo seemed to possess some very good leadership qualities in midfield while Bateau made some great runs down the wing.  Flatley was a commanding presence in central defense, winning headers and organizing the back line.  Sadly I didn't get to see Yearwood much and the half he played, he didn't receive the ball much up top.

DRIVING THE LINE: One notable aspect of the weekend’s scrimmages was the aggressiveness with which the full backs on each team pushed up to join the attack and provide width for their teams.

Former College of Charleston player Sean Bateau exemplified this for Team 3, especially on Sunday when he made a number of good runs down the right hand side. Aided by a narrow midfield triangle in the team’s 4-2-1-3 formation, Bateau was able to show what he was capable of offensively.

“The formation we were player made it easy for the full backs to get forward and exploit the other team’s defense,” Bateau said. “Obviously going forward is my specialty, I guess, it’s easy for me to go forward and still get back.”

Others who appeared eager to get forward were Team 2’s Akil Defreitas, who had a positive impact coming on as a halftime substitute on Sunday, and Ben Taylor, who teamed up well with George Davis down the left side for Team 4.
