T&TEC to line up with Pro League clubs in 2011-2012
ttproleague.com

Super League champions T&TEC has been accepted into the TT Pro League while St. Clair Coaching School, QPCC and 1st FC Santa Rosa have been afforded extensions to fulfill requirements.

The Pro League Board of Directors has accepted T&TEC as of the 2011-2011 season after the winners of the 2010 Super League and Knocout titles fulfilled all requirements.

TT Pro League CEO Dexter Skeene said, “The League considers it an asset to have T&TEC join its ranks.

“They have been involved in youths over the years and the management seems committed to the development of professional sports and players.

“It is a pleasure to welcome them into the TT Pro League fold and we wish them the best.”

Skeene explained that the League continues to work with interested clubs to assist in the transition to professional football.

The Pro League CEO said that the board has given extensions to St. Clair Coaching School, QPCC and 1st FC Santa Rosa in which time they must fulfill financial as well as administration requirements.

T&TEC will line up among Defence Force, Caledonia AIA, Joe Public, W Connection, Ma Pau SC, San Juan Jabloteh, North East Stars, St. Ann’s Rangers, FC SouthEnd and Police FC in the 2011-2012 Pro League season which kicks off in August.

T&TEC FC Manager Peter Mohan believes the time is right saying, “It’s a good feeling (to be accepted) because last year when we attempted to join the Pro League we finished runners-up in the 2009 Super League and Knockout and we felt that was a good time.

“But now we are better poised and moving to the Pro league is moving up a step because we have won the Super League and Knockout titles.

The Trinidad & Tobago Electric Commission(T&TEC) Sports Club celebrates its 55th anniversary and after only joining the Super League in 2009 finishing runners-up in the League and Knockout then winning the titles in 2010 says a lot about the “Electric Boys”.

T&TEC coached by Dexter Cyrus, assistants Desmond Bailey and Jefferson George and trainer Adarryl John is equipped with captain Jade Jones and the 2010 Super League top goalscorer Kevon Neaves.

Mohan says that his team is not just about making up numbers and promises a competitive T&TEC when they join the Pro League in the 2011-2012 season.

“We feel that we have a lot of artillery to move on, but we are not just stepping up in the League as another number.

“There will be some changes. Obviously we would have evaluated our performance against the Pro League club(North East Stars in a 1-0 defeat) in the Toyota Classic Round of 16 and it’s from that we have an idea moving forward.

“Definitely in terms of the structure and way we play will stay the same but we are focused on being competitive,” Mohan assured.

While I welcome the expansion of the Pro League, I am concerned about the structure. Unlike most leagues in the world, more games does not mean more income, while it definately means more expenditure for the clubs. If the teams had their own home grounds, perhaps it would give them more opportunities to increase their revenue stream.

While I believe T&TEC will prove worthy combatants on the field, football in T&T needs teams with multiple owners who understand the benefits of building a brand and attracting local supporters via community projects. I imagine T&TEC, like WASA will have no funding problems, but this just makes them lazy.

If we want to make T&T football a business, with packed stands, replica shirts & good TV coverage so that we can pay local players a working wage, develop local talent for the national team and afford to entice overseas players to increase the standard of football, teams have to join the league with a full portfolio, detailing how they will attract support, work in their community and develop a brand.

I have no idea what the current criteria is, but I'm assuming it is financial sustainability and a good record in tournaments and leagues. I would rather the league take a different approach. Why don't they secure sponsors who want to support football in the community? Then, community teams like St Clair and Santa Rosa can be financially sustainable and really work in their community, thus generating local support and bringing money into the game.

F Supporter,
Do not compare TT football to overseas. Gov't sponsored team can play in any league. DF, Police, Fire Services, Prisons, Wasa. There salaries are covered. Now if they have their own ground and collecting monies, the revenue helps with maintenance. This does not happen in top leagues in Europe. I know PSV is the Philips ocnglomerate sports team. Also Bayer from Germany. But they are private.

Deeks, this is my point. Its ok to have govt funded salaries, but there should be a mandate that each team works in its community to generate support and interest. You could argue that the whole country is their community. So why aren't stadiums packed with soldiers & cadets and their families for DF matches? Wasa have a community in St Joseph. They put on one of the largest fetes. So do Army. It just takes some imagination.

So where would T&TEC be based ? and which community will be supporting them ?

How can this improve the league ?

I am glad to see more teams in the league but they need to represent a community.

And where de ass these kakahole teams does get these names from, T&TEC is a Electric company, W Connection is a man name, Joe Public (nice name, but) it is a John Doe, Ma Pau is a casino, SouthEnd is where exactly, North East Stars is where (port of spain and arima) ? Defence Force is de Army.

I agree some names are a little off. But just for your info, North East are from....North East! Sangre Grande. SouthEnd are from.....yep, the South End of the island and play at Manny Ramjohn! St Anns Rangers are from St Anns! San Juan Jabloteh are supposedly from San Juan.

I'm not sure where T&TEC have their HQ, but that should be their community, as I said, WASA are from St Joseph.

The football, at least in the 60's, allways had companies( Shell, BP(Palo and Fyzo), Spitfire, Texaco(PaP, Forest), Caroni, Usine St. Madeline, Fed Chem and gov't services sports clubs. That was good at that time. At lot of North men went South to play for oil and factory teams in the south. The Hacketts father was from Belmont.

One of the reasons why a Players Association never and up to this day has never taken solid root in TT football is because of the prevalence of government ministry sport teams. TTFA/TTFF have used that as sword against players who wanted to strike. The DF, Police, Fire Service, Prisons players on the national team could not strike. They are paid by the government. Ask Coops if the DF players could have joined strike with Dilly, Gally, etc. At the same time the TTFF could have picked an entire service team to rep TT. It never reached to that because when one man strike another would see that as an opportunity.

I remember in 73 when Jimmy Springer and them had strike after coming back from a tour from Venezuela, other players like Spanner, Oscar Durity, Ray Moraldo and others I can't remember, joined the team. They held practice season at QRC. As much as I was in support of the strike,  it was a thrill to see the national team in your back yard. You as a school boy wished you were on the field among the big boys.

T&TEC predicts smooth transition into Pro League

T&TEC predicts smooth transition into Pro League.
ttproleague.com.

“I can say that T&TEC has always been ready,” T&TEC Head Coach Dexter Cyrus said confidently following official confirmation of his team’s acceptance into the TT Pro League from the 2011-2012 season beginning in August.

Cyrus led T&TEC to the 2010 Super League and Knockout titles in only their second season at the level. In 2009 T&TEC finished runners-up in both the League and Knockout sparking warnings of what was to come in 2010.

In 2009 plans to join the Pro League fell apart for T&TEC but signaled their intentions in 2010 by winning both titles at the National Super League level.

And prompt action by the T&TEC management in 2011 secured the team’s berth in the professional ranks of the TT Pro League confirmed by the League CEO Dexter Skeene this week.

Cyrus went on to add, “We intend to continue from last season as a team with great success.

“We have done exceptionally well at Zone and Super League levels and I think that everyone is more or less ready mentally for the jump to the Pro League level.

“So you can expect a lot of nice football because I like to play and coach nice football and I think with the incorporation of the management and the players we will have a lot of success.

To strengthen his team’s chances of success in their debut Pro League season, the T&TEC head coach said he will be doing some shopping.

“We have players with Pro League experience, National experience and playing abroad,” he said. “And with the mixture of youth and experience we have a good bunch, but I don’t want to take anything for granted.

“I don’t want to let any cats out of the bag, but definitely we want to go shopping for new players. But we want to know that those new players can deliver trophies.”

In February T&TEC met DIRECTV North East Stars in the Toyota Classic Round of 16 and was edged out 1-0 against the Pro League club which went on to reach the Final but defeated by Ma Pau SC.

“I thought our team performed exceptionally well,” said Cyrus commenting on his team’s performance against North East Stars.

“We were never carved open by the Pro League team (North East Stars). We on the other hand, had about three one on one chances which fell to one player and he wasn’t able to convert.

I summed it up as lack of experience at that level. Maybe in the Super League he would have had a little more time to think but not at this level.”

Team captain Jade Jones welcomes the opportunity of joining the Pro League.

He said, “It’s a wonderful feeling because it’s the highest level of club football in the country and a chance to really prove ourselves as players. There is lot of enthusiasm in the camp and everyone is just waiting on the chance to prove themselves.

Jones and teammate Joel Bailey shared the same thought that the transition into the Pro League from the Super League will be more of a mental one.

“We have a lot of guys with Pro League as well as playing abroad experience, so the major step will be a mental step more than anything else,” said Jones.

“That mental preparation, that mental concentration throughout the game for ninety minutes is a whole different level, but it’s something we can work on. And you can expect good results from T&TEC.”

Bailey who also said that it’s an opportunity for players and management to show what we are capable of, added, “It would be more of a mental challenge for us rather than our physical ability, because a lot of stuff that we would have gotten away with at lower levels (would not happen at the Pro League level).

“I think players will take some time to realize that, but at the same time I think it would be a smooth transition. With any team moving into new Leagues will take some time to adapt to new levels but because of the fact that we have been playing together for some time and based on the foundation at the club, I don’t think the transition will be that hard,” ended Bailey.
