What does future hold for Delaney and Edwards?
By Elvin King (Green'Un24)

TALKS are progressing favourably with two Ipswich Town players manager Roy Keane wants to build a promotion side around at Portman Road.

But where does this leave Damien Delaney, Carlos Edwards and others among the remaining 19 who are not contracted to the club beyond next summer?

The Blues boss has earmarked current skipper David Norris and former captain Gareth McAuley for early contract talks, and chief executive Simon Clegg is in the middle of negotiations.

Like Delaney and Edwards their contracts run out on June 30, and from the beginning of next month this allows them to begin dialogue with other clubs if a new deal has not been agreed.

“Talks are taking place with David Norris and Gareth McAuley,” confirmed Keane. “And hopefully we can reach agreement.”

Norris has already said he wants to stay and that talks are progressing well, while McAuley’s agent revealed today that negotiations are on-going and is hopeful it will get sorted.

“Gareth is settled at Ipswich, and we are in talks,” added the agent.

Edwards has heard nothing about a new deal, and like Delaney he’s be left wondering over the Christmas period what the future might bring.

The Trinidad and Tobago international has revealed that there has been no panic in the Blues camp despite a plunge down the Championship table.

Saturday’s snow-bound 3-0 victory over Leicester City at Portman Road ended a run of six straight league defeats and has brightened the mood before four crucial games over the festive season.

A couple of wins or so and Town will move up the table and away from the relegation zone.

“Yes, we were left to look over our shoulders and see what was going on near the foot of the table,” admitted speedy midfielder Edwards.

“But there was no panic.

“Morale did not drop and we all stuck together.

“I always look at things in a positive manner and hopefully the lads were taking a lead from me.

“Yes we were all disappointed and I had never been on a run like that before, but you cannot let it affect your daily lives.

“Because when you are happy at home football comes naturally.”

Andros Townsend has officially re-joined his parent club Tottenham after his intended season-long loan at Portman Road came to an end last Friday.

Nahki Wells, who is a team mate of Reggie Lambe in the Bermuda national side, has joined League One Carlisle United.

The 19-year-old has been linked with a move to Ipswich or Hull City, but will sign for Carlisle on January 1 for the rest of the season.

Town in Edwards talks
Jewell keen to keep winger

Skysports.com understands Ipswich are in talks with winger Carlos Edwards over a new deal at Portman Road.

Edwards' current deal expires at the end of the season and he could leave on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old joined Ipswich in September 2009 and he has established himself as a key player in the side.

The former Sunderland man has made 45 appearances for Ipswich and scored three goals to date for the club.

New Town boss Paul Jewell is keen to keep hold of the Trinidad and Tobago international and is ready to offer Edwards a new deal to stay at the Suffolk outfit.

Saw him play against Chelsea de other day...despite his own goal he was easily one of their better players. Looked good against Arsenal as well. No surprise that they dont want to lose him.

Edwards staying for further year

Edwards staying for further year
TWTD.co.uk

TWTD understands that midfielder Carlos Edwards’s stay at Town will stretch beyond the end of the season, the Trinidadian having triggered a clause in his contract which entitles him to an additional year on the two-year deal he signed when he joined the Blues from Sunderland for £1.35 million in September 2009.

Edwards was recently claimed to have been offered a new contract by Town, but it seems likely that the reports were referring to the additional year.

Speaking in December, former boss Roy Keane revealed that the club have options to extend a number of players’ contracts, defender Damien Delaney understood to be amongst them, along with keeper Brian Murphy: “The club has options to extend the deals of one or two boys, people like Murph the goalkeeper.”

Those whose initial terms run to June 2011 are Brian Murphy, Gareth McAuley, Damien Delaney, David Norris, Arran Lee-Barrett, Ian McLoughlin, Alan Quinn, Luke Hyam, Troy Brown, Tom Eastman, Colin Healy, Billy Clark, Reggie Lambe, Ronan Murray, Jack Ainsley, David Cawley, Jamie Griffiths and Conor Hourihane, plus Pablo Couñago and Kevin Lisbie, who are out on loan for the season at Crystal Palace and Millwall respectively.

In addition to that list of 20, first-year pro Seb Dunbar, a left-back, is contracted until this month, having previously done well enough to win an extension to a deal which was up in September.

On Monday, manager Paul Jewell revealed that he was due to talk to skipper David Norris and defender Gareth McAuley late this week regarding their futures and wants to keep them at Town.

The pair have turned down the new two-year deals which were offered before Christmas with Portsmouth chasing the midfielder.

Jewell confirms Edwards is staying at Town
TWTD.co.uk

Blues boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that midfielder-turned-right-back Carlos Edwards has triggered a clause meaning he will spend another year with the Blues, as reported by TWTD in January.

Jewell confirmed that the appearance clause had been activated: “That happened after the Doncaster game. He automatically gets another year.”

The 32-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international joined Town from Sunderland for £1.35 million in August 2009.
