CONCACAF W/Cup Qualifiers
Reggae Boyz held by Antigua as Guyana suffer drubbing
Published: Thursday, June 14, 2012

NEW YORK—Guyana suffered their second loss in five days when they were blitzed by Costa Rica but Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz had their progress stymied when they were held to a frustrating nil-all draw by Antigua, in the third round of CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday night. Playing at the National Stadium at Providence in Georgetown, Guyana were undone by Alvaro Saborio’s hat-trick to lose 0-4 after finding themselves down 0-2 at half-time. The Real Salt Lake forward put the visitors on the scoresheet as early as the 20th minute after  being set up by Bryan Oviedo and doubled the lead six minutes later as Costa Rica assumed command of the fixture. Saborio completed his hat-trick seven minutes after the halftime break when he combined again with Oviedo to dismantle Guyana’s back line. Joel Campbell then added Costa Rica’s fourth, 13 minutes from the end to pile on the misery for Guyana who also lost to Mexico  last Friday. In St John’s, the Reggae Boyz’ hopes of etching their second win were dashed when Antigua produced a sterling defensive effort to steal a point at the Vivian Richards Stadium.

The visitors were defied in large part by goalkeeper Molvin James who mustered a Herculean effort between the uprights to keep a clean sheet. Clad in gold, Antigua were cheered on by an estimated 8 000 spectators who chanted the team’s moniker “Benna Boys, Benna Boys, Benna Boys” throughout the game. That did not faze the favoured Reggae Boys who spent much of the first half trying to get past James. James kept out several attempts by the Jamaicans, including a golden opportunity from Jevaughn Watson 18 minutes into the second half.

Meanwhile Antiguan striker Peter Byers brought his side close to scoring in the 23rd minute of play but he shot straight at goalie Dwayne Miller, in for regular custodian Donovan Ricketts who was injured. Another attempt in the second half saw Byers weaving his way through the Jamaican defense but the ball was swept inches away from the crossbar. Jamaica, who beat Guatemala in their opener last weekend, have four points in Group A along with the United States while Antigua are bottom of the standings with one point. The US, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 draw by the Guatemalans after Clint Dempsey put them ahead five minutes before half-time and Marco Papa equalised with seven minutes remaining. In Group C, Cuba lost their second straight with a 0-1 loss in Panama City while Canada and Honduras drew nil-all in Toronto. Giants Mexico, however, kept up their winning run when Hector Moreno scored eight minutes from time to seal a 2-1 win in San Salvador. (CMC)

Guyana sees benefit from CCL in WCQs
CONCACAF.COM.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - In order for Guyana to continue making a positive impression on the international stage, its players need to compete daily at the highest level possible.

With a pair of World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador over the next eight days, the Golden Jaguars know that they can depend on squad members playing with and against the best in the region through the CONCACAF Champions League.

Team captain Chris Nurse, striker Gregory Richardson, Walter Moore, Aubrey David and Trayon Bobb have all been involved in meaningful Champions League action in recent weeks, as they prepare to join their team mates ahead of Friday's qualifier in San Salvador.

Moore, David and Bobb play for Trinidad Pro League side Caledonia AIA, which is coached by Jamaal Shabazz, who also happens to be the Guyana chief.

In three Champions League games thus far, Caledonia has lost twice to the Seattle Sounders (3-1 on both occasions) and played Honduras' Marathon to a scoreless draw.

Moore and David appeared in all three games, while Bobb started and played 57 minutes in the opener in Seattle.

Nurse and Richardson are plying their trades with the Puerto Rico Islanders, who lost their first two games -- both on the road -- to Isidro Metapan (3-1) and the LA Galaxy (4-0).

Richardson, though, has enjoyed particularly successful moments over the years in the Champions League. He has six career goals in the competition and is best known for scoring a hat-trick against the New England Revolution in 2008 as a member of Trinidad's Joe Public.

"For Guyana players it is good exposure, since apart from the qualifiers, the CONCACAF Champions League is highest level of football in the region," said Shabazz."

Along with some of the experienced guys, youngsters such as Colin Edwards, Sheldon Holder and Colin Nelson are also being exposed to the atmosphere of these matches and this can only benefit the country and the individuals' development."

Shabazz, however, is looking beyond today and is attentive to the long-term future of football in Guyana.

"Too much emphasis is placed on competition, we need more emphasis on development," said the Trinidad-born coach."We have got to answer the question where is our next generation going to come from and put things in place to ensure they get the necessary exposure that would equip them to play at the CONCACAF level more often in the future."

Development takes time, patience and resources. The 49-year-old realizes that considerable support is required to reach his objectives.

"Our youth teams have never qualified for CONCACAF level and although our senior team is their now, based on the results versus these higher level teams, we see that a huge gap still exists, between us and the best teams at senior level.

"The challenge is to bridge gap and this can only be done on a collective basis." Guyana and Shabazz will look to continue that project, together, in El Salvador on Friday.

Guyana names roster for Bolivia friendly

Guyana -- Former United States Under-17 international Nick Millington was one of 17 players named to the Guyana roster on Friday by head coach Jamaal Shabazz for its August 15 friendly against host Bolivia.

The game is being used as part of the Golden Jaguars' preparation program ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador next month (away Sept 7, home Sept. 11).

The 21-year-old Millington helped the U.S. qualify for the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup and is looking to make his national team debut against the 83rd ranked team in the world.

Also in the squad is Vurlon Mills, who scored both goals in Guyana's 2-1 World Cup Qualifying second-round win over Bermuda on Sept. 6, 2011.

The Golden Jaguars are aiming to snap a four-game losing streak in their first-ever encounter against the South American side.

GUYANA (roster at Bolivia - Aug. 15, 2012)

GOALKEEPERS:Colin Edwards, Richard Reynolds

DEFENDERS:Walter Moore, Colin Nelson, John Paul "JP" Rodrigues, Jamaal Smith

MIDFIELDERS:Dwain Jacobs, Kestor Jacobs, Konata Mannings, Kayode McKinnon, Nick Millington, Andrew Murray, Dwight Peters

FORWARDS:Anthony Abrams, Sheldon Holder, Vurlon Mills, Daniel Wilson

I have tickets for this match. Looks like it will be close to sold out as only the cheapest seats in the corner were available when I purchased on Sunday night.
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
