COMMISSIONER of Police Dwayne Gibbs is being called upon by the Police Service Commission (PSC) to answer how $6,200, which represented part of an exhibit in a court matter, disappeared from the Four Roads Police Station last week.
The money, which was part of $16,000 in TT dollar bills and a quantity of narcotics, were stored in a sealed cardboard box inside one of the property rooms at the station.
The PSC has also asked that Gibbs submit a report in relation to an incident in which the son of a businessman who was arrested by police last week in possession of US$90,000 worth of parts of an aluminium stage, was released by police.
The suspect's release came after his relatives negotiated a settlement with the owner of the material in the presence of senior Western Division officers.
This move angered junior officers who said they believed the matter should have been ventilated before the court and the suspect should not have been afforded special treatment because of the influence of his father.
The stolen material was part of a US$600,000 aluminium stage which was imported for the Beyonce Concert last year, but was recently stolen from the Carenage area.
A PSC statement yesterday said it viewed with great concern recent press reports over police accountability and integrity.
The PSC added in light of the two articles highlighted in last Saturday and Sunday's newspapers, "the PSC remains concerned over what appears to be the continuing erosion of public trust and confidence in the Police Service".
"All this information is connected to the drugs and ammunition found inside the roof of the St Joseph Police Station a few years ago.)"
The PSC said, in keeping with its constitutional responsibilities of monitoring the efficiency and effectiveness of the discharge of the functions of the CoP, "the Commission has therefore requested the Commissioner of Police Dr Dwayne Gibbs to provide a report on these matters as well as on the disappearance of US$94,000 from the Couva Police Station and to state what measures he intends to put in place to arrest the recurrence of similar situation".
Gibbs could not be reached for comment yesterday.
