Amazing how something can go from being #1 to not even existing in a matter of days. This was a spectacular collapse and was in danger of poisoning the entire Murdoch empire in Britain.

Anyway it will be relaunched as the Sun on Sunday once the dust settles.

A former News of the World journalist who made phone-hacking allegations against the paper has been found dead.

Sean Hoare had told the New York Times the practice was far more extensive than the paper acknowledged when police first investigated hacking claims.

Hertfordshire Police said the body of a man was found at a property in Langley Road, Watford, on Monday morning.

A police spokesman said the death was currently being treated as unexplained, but was not thought to be suspicious.

Cases referred

Earlier, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates resigned after growing pressure amid the phone-hacking scandal.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that a former senior News of the World journalist carried out work for Scotland Yard with witnesses and suspects while employed by the paper.

Alex Marunchak was employed by the Met as a Ukrainian language interpreter and was on Scotland Yard's list of interpreters between 1980 and 2000.

According to the BBC's Panorama, the former News of the World Irish edition editor obtained e-mails hacked into by a private detective in 2006. Mr Marunchak denied receiving "any unlawfully obtained material".

In a statement, the Met said it would look into the matter, saying: "We recognise that this may cause concern and that some professions may be incompatible with the role of an interpreter."

In other developments in the phone-hacking story on Monday:

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) received referrals from the Metropolitan Police Authority about the conduct of four current or former senior Met officers
Labour leader Ed Miliband again attacked Prime Minister David Cameron for hiring former News of the World editor Andy Coulson at Number 10
Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks confirmed she would appear before a committee of MPs on Tuesday, alongside Rupert and James Murdoch, despite her arrest and questioning by police on Sunday
News Corporation established an independent body headed by senior barrister Lord Grabiner QC to lead its internal inquiry into the News of the World phone-hacking scandal
Shares in News Corporation dropped by 7.6% to a two-year low in trading in Australia, and suffered a 4.3% fall in New York
The Serious Fraud Office said it would give "full consideration" to a request by Labour MP Tom Watson to investigate out-of-court settlements made to hacking victims
Press Association reporter Laura Elston's lawyer said she would would face no further action. She was arrested last month by police investigating allegations of phone-hacking by journalists
Police investigating the death of Mr Hoare said his body was discovered after police were called to his home at 1040 BST.

They said: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained, but not thought to be suspicious. Police investigations into this incident are ongoing."

Mr Hoare had told the BBC's Panorama that phone hacking was "endemic" at the News of the World (NoW).

He also said the then NoW editor Andy Coulson had asked him to hack phones - something Mr Coulson has denied.

Suspension move

It comes after Met Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates resigned amid growing pressure over the phone-hacking scandal.

Mr Yates had checked the credentials of former News of the World deputy editor Neil Wallis before he too was employed by the Met.

Mr Wallis was arrested and released on bail on Thursday on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications.

Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, the most senior policeman in Britain, resigned on Sunday after also facing criticism for the force's recruitment of Mr Wallis as a PR consultant.

Mr Yates's resignation came after he was informed he would be suspended pending an inquiry into his links with Mr Wallis.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said Deputy Commissioner Tim Godwin would be in charge at Scotland Yard until Sir Paul's replacement was appointed. Mr Yates will be replaced in the interim as the Met's head of counter-terrorism by Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick.

Mr Johnson said it was right for both Sir Paul and Mr Yates to stand down. Mr Yates said his conscience was clear and had "deep regret" over his resignation.

Job probe

The IPCC said four referrals relating to the police's phone-hacking investigation involved Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, who resigned on Sunday, and Mr Yates, as well as two other former senior officers.

The BBC understands the other two officers are former Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman and former Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke.

A fifth referral relates to the alleged involvement of Mr Yates in inappropriately securing a job at the Met for the daughter of a friend.

The BBC understands the woman to be Amy Wallis, daughter of Mr Wallis, and that she works in a civilian non-operational role.

In the Commons, Home Secretary Theresa May announced that HM Inspectorate of Constabulary would look into corruption in the police, and Independent Police Complaints Commission investigations on the same issue would be part of the judge-led inquiry into the hacking scandal.

Mr Cameron is cutting short a trade visit to Africa by a further seven hours to prepare for a statement to the Commons on Wednesday

Rupert Murdoch ‘not fit’ to run News Corp., U.K. phone-hacking committee finds

By Dylan Stableford

The parliamentary committee that's been investigating U.K. phone-hacking and media ethics released its much-anticipated report on Tuesday in London, concluding Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman and chief executive, is "not fit" to lead a major international media company.

Murdoch, the select committee found, "turned a blind eye and exhibited willful blindness to what was going on in his companies and publications."

The report also concluded James Murdoch, Rupert's son and former head of News Corp.'s British publishing unit News International, showed a "willful ignorance" of the phone-hacking activity that occurred on his watch.

The committee went on, charging that Les Hinton, former News International chairman, Colin Myler, ex-editor of News of the World, and former legal counsel Tom Crone were "complicit" in the phone-hacking cover-up. (According to the Guardian, all three may be called to apologize to Parliament, something that hasn't happened in 50 years.)

However, the committee that released the report was divided on its Murdoch findings, with conservatives members wanting to soften the language about the family. They were outvoted.

From the report:

On the basis of the facts and evidence before the committee, we conclude that, if at all relevant times Rupert Murdoch did not take steps to become fully informed about phone hacking, he turned a blind eye and exhibited willful blindness to what was going on in his companies and publications. This culture, we consider, permeated from the top throughout the organization and speaks volumes about the lack of effective corporate governance at News Corporation and News International. We conclude, therefore, that Rupert Murdoch is not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company.

The MPs, however, were unified in their conclusions about Hinton, Myler and Crone.

In a statement, News Corp. said it is "carefully reviewing the select committee's report and will respond shortly. The company fully acknowledges significant wrongdoing at News of the World and apologizes to everyone whose privacy was invaded."

Last week, the 81-year-old Murdoch testified before a committee, the so-called Leveson Inquiry, admitting that there was indeed a phone-hacking "cover-up" at News International, led by "one or two very strong characters," and that he had "failed" to uncover it.

"Someone took charge of a cover-up, which we were victim to and I regret," Murdoch said on Thursday. "I also have to say that I failed ... and I am very sorry for it."

Murdoch, though, insisted the cover-up was not engineered by the company's top executives. "There was no attempt, by me or several levels below me, to cover it up," Murdoch said. "We set up inquiry after inquiry, we employed legal firm after legal firm. Perhaps we relied too much on the conclusions of the police."

The mogul said he panicked last summer when it was revealed that News of the World had hacked into the voice mail of Milly Dowler, a missing 13-year-old who was later found murdered. Murdoch shut the tabloid down a few days later.

On Wednesday, Murdoch was grilled for more than three hours about his frequent private meetings over the years with British politicians like David Cameron—just part of "the game," Murdoch said—and the editorial influence he wields over his newspapers.
