Nusum to miss Trinidad qualifier.
By Josh Ball (Royal Gazette).

Bermuda will travel to the Caribbean for their first two World Cup Qualifiers without their all-time leading goalscorer John Barry Nusum.

Nusum has been ruled out of the matches against Trinidad and Tobago on Friday and Guyana a week on Tuesday due to work commitments.

In an ideal world head coach Devarr Boyles would have had the cash available to compensate Numsum's employers, however the limited financial resources the Bermuda Football Association are currently operating under meant that wasn't possible.

The BFA is already shelling out a considerable amount of money to fly the likes of Nahki Wells and Freddy Hall to Florida for a four day training camp, and have made similar commitements for the length of the qualifiers.

“If we were further along, or in an ideal world, where we had a pot of money where we can compensate people from their regular jobs here in Bermuda, as well as getting them from schools and overseas, things might be different,” said Boyles. “Financially we're not there yet.

“As you can appreciate the Association is spending huge money to co-ordinate all of this and getting them (players) to Florida.

“A considerable amount of funds is being pumped in, and unlike previous years where it was two matches, this is six, so you can appreciate that (it's more expensive).”

Influential midfielder Kwame Steede is the other big name to miss out, Steede is still recovering from knee surgery and Boyles was unwilling to risk him this early in the six-match campaign.

Ultimately availability has dictated who makes Boyles' first 22-man squad, although the Bermuda boss made it clear that players who missed out this time around were likely to feature in the other games.

“It (selection) is based on availability and the players that are there are the players that are available,” said Boyles. “In John Barry's case his cycle of work didn't allow that. Had he been available he would have been in the reckoning.

“The squad that's selected for these two matches is not going to be reflected for the period (of the qualifiers).

“The squad's going to be changed and updated based on availability, that's what it really boils down to.”

While Boyles is quietly confident about his team's chances in the qualifiers he is also keen to manage expectations, and rather than focusing on which countries Bermuda can or should beat he just wants to see his side advance to the next stage of the competition.

“We are very optimistic, we know there are going to be challenges but we're putting a team on the field that we know can cope, and with coping we'll see where that takes us,” said Boyles.

“If we perform we give ourselves a big chance. If preparation is good, and I say it is, we'll give ourselves a big chance. All we're trying to do is increase the chances of advancing or being successful on the day.

“But we have to manage our expectations. The idea in the past was was to advance to get more games, that's not any different now.

“It's about ‘can we get points on the board that allows us to get more games'.”

does anyone know why all the players are talking about how tough, intense the training is under pfister

this is the first time i have heard 3 separate players comment on the toughness of training, like it is the first time we had a national coach who has them training this hard

i think it is a good thing imo :beermug:

tough is good, it might be the german approach to training.  dem men like to play fifa 11 to prepare for games instead of real training.

Players to get police escort in Trinidad
By Colin Thompson (Royal Gazette).

Bermuda’s national footballers need not fear for their well-being during this week’s World Cup qualifier in Trinidad.

These were the comforting words uttered by Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Larry Mussenden who said “all necessary precautions” have been taken to insulate national team footballers from ongoing violence in the Caribbean island in the lead up to Friday’s crucial match with their hosts.

A state of emergency has been declared in so-called crime “hot-spots” in Trinidad where a number of people have been killed since violence first erupted earlier this month.

Drug gangs have been linked to the killings that were reportedly committed in retaliation to recent seizures of major consignments by police.

“T&TFF (Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation) general secretary (Richard Groden) and Concacaf general secretary (Chuck Blazer) had a round of discussions whereby they assured us that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago had assured the T&TFF that all necessary precautions would take place because of course this is a FIFA World Cup qualifier,” Mussenden said.

“They also explained to us that the state of the emergency, at that time, was a limited state of emergency that was confined to various crime hot spots and that appears to be the aim of that safety emergency to get on top of particular areas.

“We then asked about security issues as far as the hotel accommodations are concerned, as far as transport from the airport to the hotel and to and from the hotel and stadium and also whilst we are at the hotel and the general secretary (Groden) assured us that all those matters were being addressed.

“They have private security at the hotel, there will be a normal police escort for the transportation of the team from the hotel to the stadium and back. And so we have been given every assurance by the T&TFF about the procedures that will be put in place.”

To combat “wanton acts of lawlessness” police have been granted increased powers to conduct searches and make arrests while an overnight curfew remains in place in the troubled areas in Trinidad.

With the blessing of FIFA, world football’s governing body, the kick off time for Bermuda’s World Cup qualifier with Trinidad has been brought forward to allow spectators ample to time to attend the match and return home before the 9pm to 5am curfew is activated.

“The T&TFF general secretary consulted with FIFA who has agreed to change the time of the match in Trinidad and so it will be 4pm Trinidad time,” Mussenden said. “The reason is so that people can come to the match and then get home safely before the curfew in their country takes place.”

Bermuda’s national football team is due to arrive in Trinidad tomorrow for final preparations ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier to be played at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Following the match Bermuda’s travelling entourage will spend an extra day in Trinidad to begin preparations for next Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier with Guyana in Guyana.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

like Otto Iron Pfister said, he only needs a max of 4 sessions to prep the boys for the wcq :beermug:

Can't complain about a disciplined hard working team. It show his experience at this level too. If we get a nice start it could propel the team forward significantly.
