Poppies to pick up Thomson
By Pete O'Rourke (skysports.com)

Skysports.com understands former Southampton youngster Jake Thomson has agreed a deal to join Kettering Town.

Thomson arrives on a free transfer after being released by Exeter earlier this summer.

The Trinidad & Tobago star has penned a short-term deal at the ambitious Blue Square Premier side.

The midfielder was allowed to leave St James Park after making 16 league appearances for the Grecians last term and he also had a spell on loan at Cheltenham Town.

Thomson's signing will come as a boost to Kettering as they look to mount a bid for promotion to the Football League this season.

Made his first appearance today.  He may be playing in the Conference but Kettering have a very good side filled with players who have played in the Football League.

He's a good player but he's small and not necessarily exceptional. England like big, strong players, if you're small yuh better be exceptional. He's good though, and was easily the best player on the U20 team that played in Egypt.

So if he was easily the best player on our under 20 team and he's now stuggling to find a club, what does that say about our talent ??? :-[

I think this more talk about the mentality of young english players. After watching him in the U-20 Trinimassive was right he was the best player. Man was making runs from the RB spot and setting up the 1st assist, and lots of crosses. He was better than Hyland, Primus & Cyrus. Problem is young english players rather play in lower levels of english football rather than abroad. This guy could easily be playing top division ball in sweden or denmark ,but like many others he wont move abroad unless its to a glamour club.

I agree... either that, or he should learn Spanish or Portuguese and move to Spain or Portugal, he'd do just fine there.

You know this for fact?  Yuh talk to his agent to know what foreign opportunities available to him... or which ones he turned down in order to stay in England?

Its just a general statement but i do know for a fact that this is how alot of English players feel. Multiple interviews have showed that English footballers dont really fancy moving abroad. Look at some of the countries our players moved after the U-20 world cup, no glamour countries, but decent small teams. He was the best player i have no doubt that he could latch on some Euro 1st division team.

Yeah well leh we eh get too happy with the generalizations... just last week there was a post about a young English fella with Trini roots who sign with a Pro League team (Earl Carter's squad).  Also, before they folded, Tobago United had another young Scottish keeper who used to come post here every now and then.  We don't know what Jake's situation is... just because he was our best player that doesn't mean he has enough potential to get the type of opportunities you think he should.
