Goalkeeper Thorne Holder returns to Philadelphia Union

The Union sign Thorne Holder from FC New York
By Scott Kessler (The Brotherly Game)

Goalkeeper Thorne Holder has returned to the Philadelphia Union after spending almost four weeks away from the team.

The Union originally signed Holder after trialing with the team for a month, heading around the country with Philadelphia during the 2011 MLS preseason. Holder began the season as the back up to starting goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon, but a concussion and other injury problems demoted him to third string. Fifth overall SuperDraft selection Zac MacMath stepped into the back up role amiably, staying on the bench during league games and playing in the Union's reserve matches, along with both of their international friendlies (Everton and Real Madrid).

Holder did make one appearance for the Union, playing against Everton and helping keep the team's clean sheet in tack. Shortly thereafter Holder was released, but was quickly picked up by FC New York, a USL side. In five games with FC New York, Holder was 2-2-1 and had two shutouts.

Union bring back Holder to boost goalie depth: A fan’s reaction
By Mark Paul (sports.yahoo.com)

The Philadelphia Union made a roster move that might surprise some fans. The team regained the rights to Thorne Holder, the goalie that was released not long ago. Holder was playing with a club in New York during the time since the Union first cut him. He posted a 2-2-1 record there.

As a Union fan, I understand that the team needed to secure depth at goaltender. Holder is a suitable option as the third goalie. The only question I have involves why the team let him go to begin with.

Holder hasn't seen MLS action with the Union but has played with the Reserve League team in several matches. He has actually been pretty solid and brings a lot of potential. He also played a half in the friendly match against Everton. The Union won the game 1-0, and Holder was able to showcase some of his talent in front of the fans at PPL Park. Holder is a change of pace from Faryd Mondragon and Zac MacMath, the two goalies above him on the depth chart. If he capitalizes on his potential, he could have a nice future with the team.

The Union made this move because they need to carry a third goalie. Even though the third goalie might not see much action, their presence provides protection should there be an injury to one of the top goalies. In that way, the roster move was pretty smart. The Union know what they have in Holder and like him enough to let him grow.

Holder should benefit from playing in the Reserve League. We know Mondragon won't be with this team forever. That means the future goalie will be either MacMath or Holder barring a big signing down the road. As Holder gets more experience, he will increase his chance of challenging MacMath for the position. Healthy competition should be good for both players.

For now, Holder should be happy he is back with the team. Hopefully, his second time with the Union will yield some great results.

The Union re-acquired backup goalkeeper Thorne Holder this week. A former Trinidad and Tobago youth international, Holder had been released to free up an International roster slot, but was brought back after the International transfer deadline passed and the Union's only move was for American Freddy Adu.

Holder all smiles upon return to Philadelphia

Holder all smiles upon return to Philadelphia
By Dave Zeitlin (MLSsoccer.com)

Only a week after being released from the first professional team he ever played for, goalkeeper Thorne Holder was doing what he does best: laughing.

Holder, who found a home with FC New York of the USL Professional Division shortly after the Philadelphia Union waived him in late July, was laughing because he could do no wrong in an Aug. 5 game against the Harrisburg City Islanders, making save after save in a 0-0 draw, all with a smile on his face.

“I was just going after everything and I was making all these saves,” Holder told MLSsoccer.com. “It was like a guy that scores five goals in a game, by his fourth and fifth goal he just says, ‘Today must be my day.’ That day was just my day.”

Last week, Holder had an even better day as he was reacquired by the Union, less than a month after he was released. During his time away, Philly’s third-string ’keeper played five games with New York, earning a 2-2-1 record with two shutouts, including the one against Harrisburg.

“It was very settling,” Holder said of his return to Philly. “I was thinking of going to Belgium or England, but that would have been a process. I’m definitely very happy to come back. A couple of fans sent me messages on Facebook saying they were sorry to see me leave, so for them as well, it’s good to be back.”

Holder, who was released during the international transfer window so the Union would have more flexibility to make moves, didn’t know if his performance with FC New York was the reason why he was called back, nor did he ask. Surprised but excited to return, the ’keeper simply told his coaches he’d be at practice the following morning.

Last week, Union manager Peter Nowak shed some light on the unique situation, explaining that that club hoped to bring Holder back all along.

“He needed the games and we found a place for him to find games,” Nowak said. “At some point, I knew he would come back with us. It’s good to have three 'keepers for many technical standpoints. And he’s a good guy in the locker room. Everyone loves him.”

Considering he’s playing behind team captain Faryd Mondragón and rookie Zac MacMath — Philly’s goalkeeper of the future — Holder understands being "a good guy in the locker room" may just be his most important role. And he embraces that. The Trinidad and Tobago international has yet to make his MLS debut but has meshed well with teammates and always trained hard in practice — qualities the Union certainly missed during his month-long absence.

“It’s my personality,” Holder said. “I think it’s important to make everyone laugh and smile.”

He smiled as he said that.

The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Philadelphia Union News Release -- philadelphiaunion.com
Friday, September 23, 2011

CHESTER, Pa. -- Philadelphia Union today announced the signing of goalkeeper Karry "Chase" Harrison from the club's USL PRO affiliate, the Harrisburg City Islanders.

Harrison joins the Union after goalkeeper Thorne Holder was diagnosed with a concussion injury during the Union's reserve match against Columbus Crew. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, the terms of the acquisition will not be disclosed.

Along with recently signed midfielder Morgan Langley, Harrison led the City Islanders to the 2011 USL PRO final, in which Harrisburg lost in a penalty shootout to the Orlando City Lions.

During his second season with the club, the goalkeeper registered a total five shutouts in goal earning a 1.3 GAA and an 8-6-6 record. As a City Islander in 2009, the 'keeper earned eight shutouts, finishing with an 8-4-4 record and a 0.81 GAA. Harrison was then named USL-2 GAA Champion and All-League Second-Team goalkeeper.

Before rejoining the City Islanders this past season, Harrison defended Crystal Palace Baltimore's goal as well as the Richmond Kickers' in 2010. The West Virginia native was called up by D.C. United to replace back up starter Troy Perkins at the end of the MLS regular season, before signing with the Columbus Crew for their playoff run in October.

The graduate from Virginia Tech first joined MLS in 2006 when he was taken by Real Salt Lake in the third round of the 2006 Supplemental Draft. Harrison spent the majority of the season on loan with the Virginia Beach Mariners of the USL-First Division, before joining the Rochester Rhinos in 2007. As a starter for the Rhinos we went 7-5-6 with a 1.28 GAA. In 2008, the 'keeper was traded to the Portland Timbers where he earned a 1-5-0 record and a 1.76 GAA.

As a collegiate athlete with Virginia Tech, Harrison broke a total record of 24 career shutouts, eight in a single season during his senior year, as well as a 1.12 GAA.

Boy, this fella unlucky with the injuries.  And a lot of concussions too.  Ah wonder how much longer he could carry on, if he keeps getting these concussions?
