T&T lose Pollard, Bravo for Champions League

By Kern De Freitas   Aug 18, 2011

It's official!
All-rounders Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo will not represent Trinidad and Tobago at the 2011 Nokia Champions League T20 tournament in India in September.
After months of rumours, speculation and uncertainty over the players' status for the tournament, Minister of Sport Anil Roberts finally announced yesterday that the duo will play for their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) teams--Pollard with Mumbai Indians and Bravo with 2011 IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings.
During a media conference yesterday, called by Roberts to announce the news, the Minister blamed the T&T Cricket Board's (TTCB) "incompetence and the lack of notification, lack of consultation and information sharing, lack of courtesy and professionalism", and not the players actions, for Pollard's and Bravo's unavailability.
And for what he termed "deceiving" the Sport Minister and Government of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as for the poor handling of the recent National League restructuring issue, Roberts has called for Azim Bassarath to resign as TTCB president.
The Minister accused Bassarath of repeatedly misleading him up to as late as Tuesday, by continually stating that the Board was still locked in discussions with the players over their potential appearance with T&T at the lucrative T20 competition, while he knew the players were unavailable.
Roberts explained that he called a meeting with the two players on Tuesday after Bassarath repeatedly failed to provide updates on the issue.
The duo, he said, explained that they first contacted the TTCB in February after T&T qualified for the tournament a month earlier, indicating there was a possibility they might have to negotiate which team they would represent in the Champions League.
Their IPL teams qualified for the Champions League in May and in June the players told the TTCB they would forfeit 20 per cent of their contracts if they opted to play for Trinidad and Tobago. They wanted to negotiate compensation from the TTCB for the income they would have lost playing for T&T.
Roberts further said the players were not given a decision in subsequent meetings and so informed the Board on July 12 they would play for their IPL teams, just three days before the July 15 deadline that teams were given to name their provisional squads for the tournament.
"It is a very emotional issue and I do not want the population to get the wrong message and believe that Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo do not want to play for their country," Roberts said. "The truth is rather alarming and illustrates how important administrative professionalism is in this country."
If he had been informed of the matter earlier on, Roberts said, he would have ensured the cricketers would represent T&T, even if the Ministry had to partially reimburse the players.
But in subsequent conversations with Bassarath—the last being on Tuesday—the Minister said the TTCB head continued to tell him the Board was still negotiating with the players.
T&T captain Daren Ganga and West Indies Players Association (WIPA) president and CEO Dinanath Ramnarine were also yesterday unaware of the status of the players, Roberts said.
Furthermore, although Roberts is due to go to Cabinet today to confirm the release of funds for the national team's trip to India, he alleged that the TTCB also neglected to inform him that the IPL teams were obligated to compensate the local Board US$150,000 for each player.
Roberts said this information only came to light after he contacted the IPL teams for clarification and a copy of the players' contracts.
"…For not consulting, for taking decisions and trying to hold the Government to ransom for something that we do not know about, for not providing information at any time…for telling untruths to the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs and the permanent secretary and the adviser, for keeping us in the dark…I humbly suggest that Mr Azim Bassarath step down and allow somebody else who is more professional, more honest, more forthcoming to run Trinidad and Tobago's cricket."
Roberts also slammed Bassarath on the TTCB National League restructuring proposal, saying while clause 5.2 of the document indicated the proposal hinged on $4.5 million funding from Government, the Ministry had never been consulted on the matter.
"I was shocked to say the least," Roberts declared, "because while you do not have to consult with me to restructure the League, you have to consult with the Ministry and the Minister if you intend to increase the amount of money you are allocated from the Government coffers."
Ah say it, how ah see it

Bassarath: We don't need permission

Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath has fired back at criticism from Minister of Sport Anil Roberts yesterday over the handling of Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo's participation in the 2011 Champions League T20 in India.
The Minister yesterday blamed the TTCB head for mishandling negotiations with the cricketers, who eventually confirmed they will not compete for T&T at the tournament.
Instead, they will play for their Indian Premier League teams, Pollard with Mumbai Indians and Bravo with Chennai Super Kings.
The players would have forfeited 20 per cent of their IPL income if they opted to play for the national team and Roberts said the TTCB never notified him that they were asked to negotiate compensation with the Board in order to do so.
But Bassarath was fired up when he spoke to the Express about the matter yesterday and said Roberts has never attended TTCB functions when invited.
"I didn't know we had to inform the Minister about anything," Bassarath said. "The Minister is not connected to cricket in Trinidad and Tobago. We had a meeting carded for the 11th of April and the Minister did not show up to the meeting. The Minister must tell the people why he did not attend the meeting that he called."
Bassarath inferred that Roberts was not in favour of the current "Movement for Change" TTCB administration, which is why the Minister is so critical of the TTCB head.
"Now, because the election is close by, he is coming to show his true colours again. When we were ready to advise him, he was nowhere around."
Roberts also criticised Bassarath for the TTCB's restructuring proposal, saying that "not one cent" would be paid to support the proposal in its current form.
But Bassarath stated the Board did not need to consult the Minister on any plan they implement, saying Roberts can only decide whether or not to fund it.
Bassarath said bluntly: "That is none of his business; his business is to serve the people of D'Abadie/O'Meara, and he's not doing that properly."
The TTCB yesterday wrote to the Ministry of Sport, indicating that the provisional squad deadline date was August 4, although Roberts said the players informed him of the July 15 date.
The TTCB's letter stated that they had sought legal advice on the matter, which "carried the issue way past the deadline".
The TTCB also said the two players had no central contracts with either the TTCB or West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and that neither cricketer had played in the regional T20 tournament, which served as the regional qualifier for the Champions League.
"The fact that Messrs. Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard were not included in our provisional squad, due to uncertainty…and, that they were included, as far as we understand, on the provisional squads of their respective IPL franchises, to whom they are contracted, they are only eligible to participate in the Nokia Champions League for their respective franchises, if selected. This also prevents the TTCB from receiving any transfer fees for both players."
According to Roberts, however, the players' contracts states their home team has first choice on whether to field the players.
The letter further said that T&T will be ineligible to play in the subsequent (2012) Champions League if the players opt to play for their home team.
Bravo and Pollard, the letter said, have confirmed their participation for the 2012 regional T20. —Kern De Freitas

Whoever is wrong or right in this issue is not the point right now,we have lost 2 of the best bloody 20/20 players maybe in the world. All those people who are in charge should understand the meaning of the word "communication",as far as I can see this bloke Bassarath appears to be the reason for KP and Bravo's loss.I do hope that we can qualify at least but we may not go as far this time with such a loss,Bassarath should be removed just for that. >:(

Pollard, Bravo allowed to choose  Newsday
Wednesday, August 24 2011

NOKIA Champions League T20 Governing Council member and Director of Legal Affairs Dean Kino revealed that players who qualified to represent more than one team at this year’s tournament were allowed to choose which team they wanted to play for.

The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) in a media release on Monday stated that eight players were initially chosen to represent more than one team in the Champions League.

The players are; Kieron Pollard (Trinidad and Tobago/Mumbai), Dwayne Bravo (Trinidad and Tobago, Chennai), Brett Lee (New South Wales/Kolkata), Jacques Kallis (Warriors/Kolkata), Brad Haddin (New South Wales/Kolkata), Doug Boullinger (New South Wales, Chennai), Davy Jacobs (Warriors, Mumbai) and Aiden Blizard (South Australia/Mumbai).

Explaining the process for deciding which teams these players would represent, Kino, said, “Players nominated by more than one team in the final squads were given 48 hours to advise us which team they would play for.

Teams were then permitted to replace any player that withdrew from their squad and elected to play for another side.”

He added, “All eight players selected by multiple teams have elected to play for their ‘away’ team.”

Pollard will play for Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indian and Bravo for defending champions Chennai Super Kings.

The revelation contradicts the stance taken by Sports Minister Anil Roberts who last week blamed the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) and called on its president Azim Bassarath to resign after confirming that Pollard and Bravo will not be playing for Trinidad and Tobago at the lucrative Twenty20 tournament.

Roberts argued that the two players were willing and eager to play for their country and were both in tears at his office when relaying the information to him.

“I do not want the population to believe that Pollard and Bravo did not want to play for their country. That is not the truth,” said Roberts

He added, “Anyone who would suggest that they turned their backs on the country or do not want to play for Trinidad and Tobago is not telling the truth.”

Trinidad and Tobago finished as runners-up at the inaugural tournament to New South Wales Blues with Bravo and Pollard playing key roles. Mumbai Indians acquired Pollard’s services after beating out Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore during a secret ballot bid after all three teams bid the maximum price of US$750,000 at the tournament’s third auction.

Kino said, “Eleven of the 13 teams that will compete in the tournament have now named their final 15-player squads. Only the England teams are still to be confirmed and they will be decided on August 27, where the winners of the Leicestershire-Lancashire and Hampshire-Somerset semi-finals of England’s domestic T20 competition will reach the CLT20 qualifier.”
