Vance joins Wayland University.
By: Inshan Mohammed.

Former St Augustine Senior Secondary and 2009 Secondary School Football League (SSFL) “Player of the Year” Jevaughn Vance will run out for Texas based Wayland Baptist University (WBU) this coming season which began in August.

But Vance will not be the only Trinidad and Tobago national there, former Fatima College and national U-20 goalkeeper John-Ramses Thomas will also suit up for Wayland.

Jevaughn’s former teammate at St Augustine Nikkel Collymore is also with the team along with Trinidadian born assistant coach Shermon Gardner, also a former player at St Augustine Senior Secondary. The team is coached by Jamath Shoffner and they are called the Pioneers.

With recommendations from current senior national team assistant head coach Alvin Corneal and former San Juan Jabloteh assistant coach Michael Grayson both Vance and Thomas got the opportunity to earn U.S scholarships at the University.

Assistant coach Shermon Gardner told the SWO that: "John started his first game on Saturday after becoming eligible earlier in the week and we had our first shutout for the season in a 1-0 win over the University of the Southwest. He is already a very vocal player and leader on the team even though he’s at such a young age."

"Vance, has already scored 3 goals in 3 games and has 2 assist on the season. He will play a major roles in helping us build a very strong and reputable program here at Wayland."

"Nikkel has already showed glimpses of great potential and has made a great addition to a young team, ended Gardner."

Meanwhile, freshman Jevaughn Vance hit the back of the net with 21 seconds left in the second overtime period to give Wayland Baptist a 1-0 win over the University of the Southwest at Hilliard Field on Saturday evening. Vance's shot came at the 119 minute mark of the match.

John Thomas, making his first start of the season for Wayland, made five saves on the evening.

Head coach Jamath Shoffner said: "We are a very young team without a lot of experience. We need to pick ourselves up and keep finding our identity, ended Shoffner."

Assistant coach Trini-born Shermon Gardner is currently pursuing his MBA at Wayland with a concentration in Management Information Systems.

The Appalachian Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2003, Gardner was a three-time AAC first team All-Conference and Academic All-Conference honoree, as well as a two-time All-Region selection at Montreat College in North Carolina.

Gardner also played one year at the University of South Carolina Upstate, then a top-5 NCAA Division II team, where he led the conference in assists.

He returned to Montreat for his final season where he played for current Pioneer head coach Jamath Shoffner. The Cavaliers went 15-4-1 that year and reached the postseason for the first time in school history.

Gardner was awarded the 2006 AAC Golden Boot Award and earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors.

He graduated from Montreat in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and minors in business and music.
