Pro round up

Guard Devaughn Akoon-Purcell was Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) top basketball player on the international pro-circuit. In Denmark, Akoon-Purcell had a team high 31pts and 8rebs as Bakken scored a comfortable 102-82 win over SISU on February 19. Currently, Akoon-Purcell is the leading scorer in the Ligaen League averaging 22.3ppg. While, Bakken remains in second position with an 18-3 record.

Another outstanding display came from Joey Haywood. In NBL Canada games, Haywood scored 16pts, 4rebs & 3 assists for Halifax Hurricanes in a 108-123 away loss to London Lighting on February 20. It was the best performance for the former 33-year old T&T point guard since his return to the pro-circuit in Canada early this year.

Down in Japan, guard Daniel Dillon (6-4) scored 10pts and 4 assists for Hiroshima in the Japanese B League D2. But in a losing effort the 2nd ranked Hiroshima D still went under to top-ranked Gunma 82-86 on February 18. The loss ended a 12-game winning streak for the Hiroshima Dragonflies.

While in Spain, center Kyle Rowley's Araberri went under to Huesca 71-75 on February 18. Rowley finished with 6pts & 6rebs. With the unexpected loss Araberri dropped to 10th ranked with a 12-12 record. While, Huesca improved to 16th place with a 6-18 record.

Mavericks add quality grad transfer

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's basketball program significantly enhanced its inside presence this season with the addition of 7-foot graduate transfer Johnny Hamilton.

A native of Rio Claro, Trinidad, Hamilton earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with a major in criminology in August from Virginia Tech, where he played just three games as a senior after suffering a thumb injury. He began his college career at Jacksonville (Texas) College, where he was among the national leaders in blocked shots. He has one season of eligibility remaining as a graduate student at UTA pursuing a master's degree in criminology and criminal justice.

"Johnny is an extremely athletic big man who has a chance to be among the elite centers in the Sun Belt Conference," said UTA head coach Scott Cross.  "At 7-feet, he obviously has tremendous height and length.  But, more importantly, he has good skills at both ends of the floor, great timing and will be an elite defender for us.  He is mature, experienced and gives us the flexibility and depth to be very aggressive on the defensive end of the floor.  We are very, very excited to have Johnny in our program and I cannot wait to start coaching him here at UT Arlington."

Hamilton, who only began playing basketball at the age of 16, started his college career under head coach Jody Bailey at Jacksonville. As a sophomore in 2014-15, he averaged 9.0 points and 8.9 rebounds and shot 61.7 percent from the field. He averaged 4.3 blocked shots per game and registered four or more blocks 16 times.

While at Virginia Tech, he played 17 games as a junior and averaged 1.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 7.2 minutes per game. Last season, as a senior, he played in just three games before suffering a torn flexor tendon in his left thumb.

Hamilton joins a UTA program that has won 52 games in the last two seasons, the second-highest total among NCAA Division I programs in the state of Texas. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 27-9, won the Sun Belt regular season title and fell just four points shy of advancing to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals.

nah, there is not a national league. Basketball is really being run by the zones. Sometimes the best teams in the zones will play a tournament style competition for the national champions but that doesn't happen every year.
the big tournament in those days you talking about was de Super10.These were the 10 best teams in de country. Fakoory, Rangers (football) and Sepos (basketball) owner use to run dat, but even he give up.

Bridgewater off to Weatherford College

T&T basketballer, Joshua Bridgewater has officially committed to Weatherford College in Texas to begin his athletic college career. The 19 year old recently celebrated the completion of his final year at Trinity Catholic High School in Hutchinson, Kansas in light of the institution's graduation ceremony over the weekend.

Bridgewater, who is from the Maloney Pacers Basketball Club and Youth Development Programme, has been enrolled in Trinity High's basketball programme for the past two (2) years. In his final year, he was instrumental in the team's successful run during the 2018 - 2019 season.

Averaging 8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, Bridgewater also had several standout performances throughout the year. He recorded a total of 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks as he helped Trinity High secure an easy 73-20 win over the Independent High School of Wichita in February, 2019.

On the 28th February, he was the second player to score in double figures, adding 12 points to the Trinity's 62-57 win versus Garden Plain High School in the sub-state semi-finals. Trinity High went on to be crowned the Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 2A sub-state champions, earning them a trip to the state basketball championships in March. They completed the regular season ranked no. 1 in the state, and were runners up in state championship finals.

Bridgewater, who was born and raised in Chaguanas, attended Chaguanas North Secondary School before moving to the U.S. in 2017. Competing collegiately was a life-long sporting goal for the six-foot-9-inch forward. He stated that 'Playing in college has been a dream for me ever since I've been in sports. I want to represent my country and show everyone that anyone can make it no matter where you are from.
