ON YOUR MARK, GET SET...:  Competitors await the start of the Sprint Triathlon at the 11th annual Massy Rainbow Cup Triathlon on Saturday.

CHAMPS: Celine Lestrade, centre, and her BPTT teammates Dave Storer, left, and Truls Haguen after BPTT won the team event  in 1:10.55. Lestrade anchored the team.

Joshua Ho and Lily Stauble were crowned winners in the Sprint Distance triathlon races at the 11th annual Massy Rainbow Cup at the Courland Heritage Park, Black Rock, Tobago, on Saturday.

The Olympic and Sprint Triathlon events were the feature disciplines of the 11th annual Rainbow Cup which began at 7.00am. Competitors had to battle with the heat of the day as they rode and ran through Black Rock to Present Prospect and back.

Ho completed the men’s event (750m swim/20Km ride/5K run) in one hour, eight minutes and 17 seconds to hold off early race leader Christian Gillette (1:08.51) and Mark London (1:12.16).

Trinity College student Ho had to come from behind to take the title as Gillette led after the swim, followed by his brother Andrew in second. Ho was third but moved up into second in the eight-lap bike ride, before taking the lead in the third and final (running) leg to improve on his second-place finish from 2014.

Gillette (Christian) and Ho were eager to get a big advantage on London in the first two legs as London’s strength is in the final leg. London is a five time Carifta champion in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m. London, from nearby Plymouth, was also third in 2014.

Stauble had an easier path to victory in the ladies race, as she was top spot coming out of water and was never headed. She went to to take the top prize in 1:23.57 ahead of Dana Llanos (1:26.40) and former T&T Miss World representative Lorca Gatcliffe-Farah (1:27.08). Stauble won the girls aged 13-15 Triathlon in 2014.

Meanwhile, Martiniquan Clement Briere and Megan Lamers of Canada copped the Olympic Distance (1.5Km/40Km/10Km) disciplines. Briere won in 2:06.47 ahead of Canadian Jackson Laundry (2:07.41) and Teylor Arbolea of Venezuela (2:13.36). Later on, Arboleda returned to defend the open water 3000m title clocking 46 minutes, 27seconds to beat out local swimmers Aleem Mohammed (48.05) and 14 year old Luke Gillette (50.26).

Jean-Mark Granderson won the boys title in the Kids 13-15 (375m swim/10K ride/2.5K run) (40.59) ahead of Akini Webster (44.04) and Darian Nimblett (44.26). Syndey Welch (48.57), Noa Sheppard (50.33) and Kirsten St. Omer (52.38) were the top girls.

In the final event of the day, the 5K, Celine Lestrade copped the women’s trophy (21.13) ahead of Christy-Ann Baptiste (23.11) and Leisl Puckerin (23.19).

Kelvin Johnson of Guyana took the men’s version in (16.32) narrowly ahead of fellow Guyanese Lionel Dandrade (16.32) as the two sprinted across the line together. Kade Sobers was third (17.17).

The 20K will take runners through Duncan Village, La Romaine and on to the Mosquito Creek via Paria Suites. Racers will turn left at Oropouche Junction onto the Fyzabad Guapo Main Road, and finish at Charlie King Junction, Fyzabad.

O.W.T.U. KIDS 5K FUN RUN 19 JUNE 2015

The children’s 5K races will begin at Jovan’s Shop in Oropouche and end at Charlie King Junction.

The races have attracted top national and regional athletes, including Curtis Cox, Pamenos Balantyne and last year’s winner Kevin Johnson.

The 2015 edition of the Butler Classics is the first in partnership with the NAAA. Both the OWTU and the NAAA hope to broaden the scope of the Butler Classics to win the participation of international athletes and build a lasting relationship toward the development of road running in Trinidad and Tobago.

O’Neil, Joseph grab Cross Country titles
Published: Wednesday, June 24, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

Deodath Harrikissoon of First Citizens on his way to
the CariFin Games Cross Country men’s walking title
at the Sevilla Golf Course, Couva, recently.

Ryan O’Neil, Adona Joseph, Deodath Harrikissoon and Charlene Villafana all won their respective categories when the CariFin Games held its Cross Country event at the Sevilla Golf Course in Couva, earlier this month.

In the men’s cross country run, O’Neil, of Guardian Group, who won the previous races in the series, took command of the three-lap cross country race early on. At the end of the first lap he had already opened up a 30-second gap ahead of his competitors. At the end of the 7.2km course O’Neil won easily in 30 minutes and 30 seconds, more than two minutes ahead of second placed John Donaldson in 32:46. Rounding off the top three was Scotiabank’s Alvin Brown in 32:48.

After his fourth consecutive win in the series, O’Neil said, “I am just feeling happy as I won, everyone likes to win.” He felt that his football fitness gave him the edge and guided him through all the events. His advice to would be aspirants who would like to reach his level was, “train hard and never give up!”

O’Neil also led Guardian Group to the men’s cross country team title along with Kris Deonanan and Corey Joseph.

Joseph, of Sagicor, culminated a great CariFin season by with the women’s cross country title. Prior to the event, Joseph finished second in the One Lap Savannah and Green Mile events, while she won the Chancellor Challenge and the Aerobics Burnout. Joseph was able to claim victory easily in 25:41.

Her closest competition came from Jillette Landeau, of Guardian Group, who completed the course in 26:26 for second place. Third place went to Simone Balkissoon, of Guardian Group, who completed the two-lap journey in 28.12.

“I must say it was quite challenging,” said Joseph’s after the race. “My team-mates and I ran a couple days in the Queen’s Park Savannah Hollows just to get an idea of what to expect. I must say, that was quite misleading as the Sevilla Golf Course was ten times more intense but this also made my victory a more fulfilling one. I look forward to 2016.”

Joseph led Sagicor to the women’s cross country team title as Vitra George, Danielle Cazabon and Joseph combined for the lowest aggregate time.

Harrikissoon, of First Citizens, and Villafana, of Republic Bank, won the men’s and women’s walk, respectively.

The nine teams that participated in the Carifin Games this year were First Citizens, Grace Kennedy, Guardian Group, IBL Bank, Republic Bank, RBC, Sagicor, Scotiabank and Unit Trust Corporation.

The sponsors included Bluewaters, Subway, Brixel Design Studio, Unicom, Lezama Electrical, TATEC Ltd, Massy Motors, Massy Finance, True Green, Eastern Credit Union and Topmark.

Scores of people, mostly students, turned out on Saturday to participate in Hillview College’s inaugural 5K Health Fair.

The school hosted the fair at the school compound on El Dorado Road, Tunapuna as part of its 60th Anniversary celebrations held by Victorio Hawkins, a dean at the college.

The highly anticipated 5K followed the Zumba workout and took the route from the College’s compound, along college road (heading east), onto Karamath Street, down Goya Street then onto Cora Road heading back on to Karamath Street to El Dorado Road which led the racers back to the school’s compound.

The race ended with Dominic Timothy strutting home in first place with a time of 22 minutes and 20 seconds, Enrique Rickson was hot on his heels with a time of 22:30 and Elijah Singh trailing in 22:40. ‘Go Granny’ spurs Summer Burn fitness buffs

Comedienne Nikki 'Granny' Crosby shows she can keep fit alongside Digicel Summer Burn participants recently.

FITNESS BUFFS are hoping comedienne Nikki Crosby, aka “Granny” returns to the Queen’s Park Savannah today, for the final installment of this year’s edition of the “Digicel Summer Burn” fitness series. Granny’s presence added to the overall experience when the penultimate stanza was held recently, as scores of keep-fitters defied inclement weather to take part in the aerobic workout, while others competed in the Team Challenge, for which a cash prize awaits the overall champions.

Among the highlights of the activities was an impromptu performance by “Granny”, joining the Long Circular Gym instructors on stage and guiding the patrons through a cool-down session to the beat of her Soca hit “Go Granny.”

In last week’s Fitness Challenge, teams were required to carry four cases of water, build a bridge with blocks, flip truck tyres, run in a sack race and throw six cricket balls. The winning team, “Red Steel” won themselves tickets to the CPL semi-final games and secured the last qualifying place in today’s team final, where they will join the other winning teams in competition for the $5000 cash prize.

The grand finale of the Digicel Summer Burn will start at 5.00 pm today on the driveway to the Grand Stand, at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

Bankers marathon attracts top runners
Published: Wednesday, July 29, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

Bankers CEO Vance Gabriel thrilled at response.

The inaugural Bankers half-marathon is attracting a number of top local and international distance runners as registration for the Independence Day event is going very fast.

This according to CEO at Bankers Insurance Vance Gabriel who also revealed that the company has forked out over $200,000 for the event.

“We are amazed at the response we have gotten thus far in terms of the athletes, the quality of the athletes and the number of them rushing to be part of our event. What is even more surprising is the fact that we hosting this event for the first time.”

Although it will be Bankers’ first time hosting the half marathon they are going all out to make sure the event is a success and up to international standard.

“We have contracted International Marathons’ (AIMS) Measurer, Bernard Conway to measure and certify the course. This will be done from August, 1 and 2, 2015 under Police Escort. Having the course certified will lend credibility to our race and should a runner break a record, then same will be recognized. A number of our runners are now using the race as a precursor to the Rio 2016 Olympic qualification.”

Among the top men coming for the event will be Livan Loque Reyes from Cuba, Rupert Green out of Jamaica, T&T’s Richard Jones, Curtis Cox, Guyana’s Kelvin Johnson and Lionel Dandrade, as well as the evergreen Pamenos Ballantyne St Vincent and Zepherlnus Joseph from St Lucia.

The race begins at Atlantic Plaza in Couva and will finish at Bankers Head Office in Chaguanas. The top prize is $12,000 and this will be nabbed by both male and female which is unique as normally the men runners bag more. Ballantyne, Cox to run Venture 5K
Saturday, August 8 2015 (T&T Newsday)

THE 16TH Annual Venture Credit Union Co-operative Society Limited 5K Run and Fun Walk is scheduled to be run off on Sunday, September 13.

The theme for this year’s event will be “Courage, performance and prosperity.” The event’s media launch was held on Wednesday, at the boardroom of the Credit Union’s offices along the Southern Main Road, Couva.

Venture’s 5K Chairman, Desmond Baxter (MOM), announced that the starting time of the race is 7 am. The company’s president, Charles Percy will once again be sounding the horn to start off the 5k and fun walk.

Baxter said that this event is one of the biggest on the country’s athletics calendar, with a budgeted cost of $322,000.

The CUNA Mutual Group is partnering with Venture in the project and has donated $25,000; Athletics Central is once again involved in the technical aspect of the event.

“For the past years,” Dexter stated in his address, “Venture have been focused and committed to the financial, social, educational and sporting development of its members and the people.” He added that due to the partnership with CUNA, the event this year has attracted international and Caribbean participants.

Baxter also announced that last year’s wiñner, Pamenos Ballantyne of St Vincent and the Grenadines will be defending the men’s title. He added that Ballantyne will face strong competition from international runners such as Kenneth Rotic of Kenya, Cleveland Forde of Guyana and Cuba’s Levi Luke, as well as top locals like Curtis Cox, Kelvin Johnson and Lyndyon Bacchus, all vying to cop the top prize.

In the women’s division, Tonya Nero, the national champion and winner of the event for the past three years will compete against Kenisha Pascall of Grenada, Elsida Toemere from Suriname and Venture’s Samantha Shukla, who was 2nd last year.

Officials are expecting a large entry and an exciting 5K, with teams from rival credit unions and other financial institutions expected to participate; they are also expecting firms from the Point Lisas Industrial Estate to compete in the category for company teams.

On the morning of the walk/ run, there will also be a cultural event, with the Couva Jab Jabs providing some colour; participants will also be offered blood sugar and blood pressure testing.

Registration for the event has already begun at the Credit Union’s Offices, in Arouca, Couva and San Fernando.

‘Rally for Peace Relay’ on Sunday instead
Monday, August 17 2015 (T&T Newsday)

THE PLANNED ‘Rally For Peace Relay’ run which was scheduled to take place yesterday has been postponed.

The race, an initiative of Minister of Sports Brent Sancho and the Inter Community Rally For Peace Committee, will now be held on Sunday August 23.

The postponement came after Senior Superintendent John Clarke of the Port-of-Spain Division, in a letter stated that the Executive of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has embarked on a number of initiatives geared towards sensitising the public about the scourge of domestic violence in TT .

And among the initiatives is a ‘Zero Tolerance to Domestic Violence’ Walk which was expected to take place yesterday.

According to Clarke, there were 29 murders arising out of domestic violence and the executive of the TTPS feels it is critical to spread the awareness of domestic violence to the national community as well as well as explain how to get help.

Meanwhile, momentum for the Rally For Peace Relay run has been building with members of the participating communities — St Ann’s, St Barb’s, Picton, Morvant, Duncan Street, Nelson Street, Sealots, Belmont and Beetham, all ready to create an environment of peace and unity for themselves and their children.

The ‘Rally For Peace Relay’ will see the communities involved in a relay from Patos Vale in St Ann’s to the Beetham in a move to end the gang warfare in the depressed communities in TT .

Organisers however are still calling on corporate TT to come out in support of the event by sponsoring one of the nine teams — St Ann’s Frontliners, St Barb’s United, Picton Punishers, Morvant Jets, Duncan Street Striders, Nelson Street Pioneers, Sealots Stingers, Beetham Blasters and Belmont Sprinters.

Persons interested in funding a team or pledging financial support for a team or the event can contact.

Race organisers are anticipating some 1200 participants in the two events, as it is always well subscribed by employees from other credit unions, the banks, other financial institutions and the manufacturing sector on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. Additionally, there is normally a large entry from local clubs affiliated to the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA), as well as children from schools in the central districts.

Heading the regional entrants will be Pamenos Ballantyne, the veteran St Vincent and the Grenadines athlete who will be defending the Open Men’s title, and Guyana’s Cleveland Forde. Another top athlete with experience running in the Caribbean will be Kenneth Rotich of Kenya.

The theme of this year’s edition is Courage, Performance, Prosperity.

The race will be run off on Sunday September 13, with Venture Credit Union president Charles Percy sounding the starter’s horn at 7 am in front of the St Paul’s RC Church on the Southern Main Road, Couva. The technical director for the run/ walk will be the NAAA Secretary Allan Baboolal.

Aside from the opportunity to win medals and other prizes, the event will offer a lot to participants. There will be a Wellness booth which will provide helpful medical advice and services such as Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Eye testing. Organisers also plan to feature a community cultural performance which will include dancers, the Couva Jab Jab’s, Tassa groups and Elton Francis.

Foreign runners dominate Venture 5K
BY VASHTI SINGH Monday, September 14 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Maria Osoria (Venezuela) & Kenneth Rotich (Kenya) winners of Venture Credit Union 5K Run 2015

CARIBBEAN-BASED Kenyan runner Kenneth Rotich and Venezuela’s Maria Osoria claimed the men’s and women’s titles in yesterday’s 16th-annual Venture Credit Union 5K Run and Fun Walk in Couva, central Trinidad. The event was staged by the credit union in collaboration with the CUNA Mutual group and the Athletics Central club.

Scores of people, including children from as young as five years braved the early morning rain to participate .

Rotich, a 24-year-old, broke the course record, covering the distance in 14 minutes, 24 seconds .

He was followed by Guyana’s Cleveland Forde (14 minutes, 57 seconds), with Cuba’s Livan Reyes taking third spot in 15 minutes, three seconds .

Defending champion Pamenos Ballantyne crossed the finish in fourth place (15:36); the veteran St Vincent and the Grenadines runner said after that he had not been feeling too well, due to injuries, but he was happy just to have come out to defend his title .

Kelvin Johnson (15:49) completed the top five in the Open category .

Maria Osoria outpaced a strong women’s field to win in a time of 17 minutes, 53 seconds. Local athlete Tonya Nero of the host Athletics Central ran a very close second (17:55), while Keneisha Pascal of Grenada (18:59) took the bronze medal. April Francis of Abilene Wildcats (19:39) and Celine Lestrade 5th (20:03) made up the women’s top five finishers .

The theme for this year’s event was “Courage, Prosperity and Performance.” Preparations for the race started from as early as were afforded a warm-up session from 6:45am. The main event started at promptly 7:00, under overcast skies outside the Couva RC Church .

Both runners and walkers headed east along the Couva Main Road and proceeded south at Isaac Junction, then west alongside the HDC housing development, and finally, north along the Southern Main Road to the finish line in front of the Venture Credit Union building on the main road. At one point, there was a light drizzle, but the rain was never heavy enough to dissuade the participants .

As an added attraction, a raffle was drawn at the prize-giving ceremony .

The first prize winners won a one-night weekend stay at the Hyatt Regency; the second prize winners got tickets to the Venture Credit Union Wine and Cheese Night, and the third prize was a One Spa Manicure from the Institute of Elegance .

The event, which is now a staple on the local road-running calendar, is designed to raise funds to help the country’s disadvantaged children; it offers participants the chance of winning up to $35,000 in prizes, while all proceeds will go towards the fund. Additionally, there are always several side attractions on the day geared towards making the event an enjoyable experience for children in attendance.

This year’s Challenge will once again start opposite the TGI Friday’s restaurant on the Queen’s Park Savannah.

The registration cost is $50 for the 5K and $60 for the 10K; however, groups of ten will pay only $300 for the 5K and $400 for the longer distance.

Last year, over 300 people, including runners, fitness enthusiasts, parents and supporters took part in the 5K run. Kelvin Johnson, who won it in a time of 15 minutes, 59 seconds will be chasing a hat-trick of wins if he competes this year, having also won the 5K in 2014 and 2013. Lionel Dandrade ran a close second for the past two years and he will undoubtedly be striving to take first place this time around.

Samantha Shukla won the 2014 women’s category in 18 minutes, 39 seconds, with Dawnell Collymore and Shania Francis rounding out the top three.

Apart from taking part in the road races, parents are being encouraged to make the event a family occasion.

Among the activities to appeal to the children are a bouncy castle, an obstacle course, a basketball hoop, a rock wall and slides, and the first 200 children to arrive will be given free popcorn, cotton candy and balloons.

Registration can be done at Kenny’s Sports Centre (POS), and Body Glow at the Long Circular, Trincity and Gulf City malls.

Rotich: TT athletes eat too much meat
By ASHFORD JACKMAN Saturday, September 26 2015 (T&T Newsday)

Kenneth Rotich of Kenya winner of Newsday Save
the Children Challenge Men’s 10K run 2015.

THE WINNER of the Men’s 10K run in the Newsday Save the Children Challenge on Thursday has some interesting advice for local distance-running athletes: eat less meat.

And the opinion of Kenneth Rotich might be worth paying attention to, given that he hails from Kenya, the African state that has produced so many champion Olympians over the middle and long distances for decades.

“I first came to the Caribbean in June, and then I flew back, and I have been here a month now. My coach lives here and he shows me what to do,” the soft-spoken Kenyan explained.

“I think I will be racing here in the Caribbean for a month and then go back to Kenya.” Rotich said he expects to compete in an event in Guadeloupe in mid-October. The Republic Day win was his third in as many road outings in TT ; most recently, he won the Venture Credit Union 5K in Couva.

It was when asked to comment on the quality of runners he has met in TT that the Kenyan made his observation about the diet of local athletes.

“I think everyone can run, I’ve been seeing a lot of people here,” he said, adding, “They need a programme on how to run and the food to eat, because I see most of the people here eat meat all the time. In Kenya, most of the elite runners take meat like once in a week and natural food for (the rest of the time). And we have to commit ourselves to like running twice a day; in Kenya, we run sometimes three times a day and we have to cover like 120 miles per week.” As for the actual race, while Rotich’s winning time was not available, he was convinced that he could have gone faster, had the weather been more conducive to running.

“Yeah. This was my first race run in this kind of weather,” he said. “It was really hot, humid. My first kilometre was like a 5K; I felt it was very hot; I produced my best. I could run maybe 29 minutes, but because of the humidity, it was hard for me. But the course, it was good, it’s a nice course.” He added that he deliberately attacked from the start, putting pressure on his rivals — a tactic that eventually took a toll on them.

In a few months, however, Rotich will be concentrating on the event in which he hopes to represent Kenya in Rio 2016. For that, he will stop running on the road.

CUBAN TAKES UWI MARATHON
Perez and Kiptoo dominate

By WALTER ALIBEY (T&T Guardian)
Published: Monday, October 26, 2015

LEADERS: Richer Perez of Cuba, right, is closely followed by Kenya’s Kenneth Rotich during the 12th Annual UWI SPEC International Half-Marathon 2015 yesterday. Tonya Nero

Under extremely rainy conditions that appeared to be conducive for breaking records, debutant Richard Perez of Cuba and Kenyan Caroline Kiptoo ensured another foreign dominance at yesterday’s 12th edition of the UWI Spec International Half Marathon from the St Augustine Campus to the La Resource junction in D’ Abadie and back.

Perez, the Pan American marathon champion left the field behind to cross the finish line in a time of one hour and eight minutes flat. Kiptoo on the other hand had to work hard up until the last few miles to beat her Trinidadian counterpart Tonya Nero with some five miles to go and retain the title she won last year.

Her time was one hour, 17 minutes and 54 seconds while Nero was exactly a minute behind her in one hour, 18 minutes and 54 seconds.

A heavy downpour soon before the start at 5.30 am yesterday morning may have swayed some fans from making an appearance to support their runners but it also provided an alternative from a usually scorching hot event which saw a field of 1,200 face the starters gun. And Perez, a first timer to the event had to keep his eyes on favourites Kenneth Rotich of Kenya and Chavez Da Silva of Brazil. However the Brazilian, who only last year said that he wanted to win the race for the next ten years, had to pull out of the race somewhere close to the midway point due to diarrhoea.

With ten miles to go Rotich, who has dominated local long and middle distance racing, couldn’t keep up with the Cuban and Perez opened up a huge lead and took it to the finish. After the race he told the Guardian “I didn’t know what to expect so I decided to start slowly and monitor the top runners. With 10 miles to go I realised that the Kenyan could not keep up with me so I raced to the finish line for the win.”

Strangely the Cuban said also that the rainy conditions held him back as he felt heavy throughout the race. Perez’s time of 1:08.00 flat was a mere three minutes shy of the course record.

Following him in second was Rotich in 1:08.06 with Jamaican Kirk Brown in third in 1:09.12 and fourth Pedro Espinoza Perez of Mexico in 1:09.57 while  another Jamaican Ruper Green secured the fifth position in 1:10.49. Meanwhile with Richard Jones still recovering from a slip disk in his back, T&T failed to be among the top six runners yesterday. In fact Matthew Hagley was the first T&T runner to cross the finish line in a time one hour, 13 minutes and 12 seconds in position seventh. Veteran Curtis Cox was two spots behind Hagley in ninth (1:15.53).

Among the women Kiptoo could not shake off a nagging Nero for most of the race but eventually got the better of her with five miles to go and win by a minute. She said afterwards that she was satisfied with her time because it was an improvement from last year. Meanwhile the slender built Nero, who only a few days ago said that she would have stopped the foreign domination, explained that she was totally satisfied with her time.

“One of my main goals was to dip under the one hour and 20 minute hurdle and I did that. I think I ran my race under conditions conditions that I really enjoyed but the Kenyan ran well and won. Maybe next year I will try again” Nero said. She added “I have been using this race also to prepare for the Dubai marathon next year and I think it went well also so I am satisfied.”

Nero was followed in third by Yailen Garcia of Cuba and Celine Lestrade of T&T in fourth.

Meanwhile organisers of the uwi half marathon remembered veteran runner Charles Spooner by presenting a painting of the runner to his family. Spooner who died earlier this year at the age of 91, was a regular participant in the race who in fact took part of every race except this one.

At the event yesterday was Minister of National Security Edmund Dillon, UWI principal Professor Clement Sankat and other dignitaries.

UWI HALF MARATHON

Over a thousand runners braved the cold, rainy weather of Saturday morning to run the UWi international half marathon.

The international domination continued with two foreigners copping the male and female titles.

Ryan Bachoo didn’t run but he did cover the event.

Chairperson of the T&T International Marathon Diane Henderson is challenging secondary schools and youth groups to come out in their numbers at the 34th edition of the event which takes place on January 16 and 17, in an effort to produce another Olympic athlete.

Next year’s event includes the marathon, marathon relay and a 5km race. At the event’s press conference yesterday at the T&T Olympic House on Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain, Henderson spoke about the marathon relay, a new edition to next year’s event. Henderson explained that each team can register up to six athletes, each running 7km of the 42.16km course (26.2 miles).

Henderson stated that the marathon relay is flexible, saying that it is not mandatory to register six persons. “These legs can be run with two persons if you don’t have six people. This gives an individual the opportunity to complete a half marathon because two people will run three legs each.”

One of the goal’s of next year’s marathon is to develop talented youngsters to reach their full potential. “We realise there are a lot of groups out there other than the main clubs that don’t have sufficient training access to coaches. We need to link these young groups to the coaches.”

Henderson believes that many young athletes simply use their natural ability. The marathon organiser wants to see the youngsters times improved so T&T can see another youngster reaching the Olympic level.

A special moment at next year’s race will be a tribute to Charles Spooner, an avid marathon runner who passed away earlier this year. Spooner’s granddaughter Chenelle is aiming to complete the marathon in memory of her grandfather. Henderson said the marathon committee will assist Chenelle with her goal, as the committee has asked an experienced distance runner to assist her with preparations for the race.

TTIM (T&T International Marathon), the marathon mascot, will make his debut next year. “He (TTIM) represents a bit of our culture, our pan and our colours. His legs has the pitch lake, several parts of our musical culture and national birds. We will bring TTIM alive in 2016. Look out for TTIM as a representative of the T&T International Marathon.”

Sea to Sea Marathon in Tobago, May 2016

Partnering with multiple stakeholders, including the Tourism Development Company Ltd (TDC), the Sea to Sea Marathon is the first AIMS/IAAF certified course in Tobago and will be offering a healthy US$60,000 prize package, making it the most lucrative race in the Caribbean. Starting in the pristine Main Ridge Forest Reserve near Bloody Bay, the marathon provides participants with an opportunity to run from the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean through Tobago’s rainforest, picturesque villages and the island’s capital of Scarborough.

The race proceeds through Roxborough, then runs south along Windward Road and on to the 26.2-mile distance finish line in Lambeau Beach.

As Tobago moves to take advantage of the new trend of combining exciting participatory sports with authentic engagement of local people, the Sea to Sea Marathon will boost visitor arrivals during a traditionally slower period of the year (May) for the Tobago tourism sector.

The inaugural Sea to Sea Marathon is targeting 500 international runners and visitors to participate in this unique Tobago event, which is projected to be one of the leading major sports and tourism push in the sister-isle. Special prizes will be awarded to young participants as well as male and female runners.

Registration deadline for all races is May 7 and all interested persons are encouraged to visit the Sea to Sea website for more information: http://www.seatoseamarathon.com/.

The race entry fee is US$100 per person for international runners, US$25 for TT residents and US$10 for youth under 20 years of age.

Cyclist Peter Sellier and long distance runner, Collin Pereira dominated the 10th annual Subway River Raid Mountain Bike Race & Trail Run over the weekend.

Hosted by the Rainbow Warriors Triathlon Club, the trails of Tucker Valley, Chaguaramas came alive on Saturday as hundreds of eager runners and bikers, young and old, took on the single track trails, through dry river beds and leafy canopies.

Taking top honours in the Men's Open class Mountain Bike (MTB) race was 16-year-old Peter Sellier (centre), who finished his three lap course in a time of 1:01:35. Pedaling into second and third was Ryan Chin (1:04:11) and Chris Govia (1:04:48). Carolina Lugo was the only female in the open class and she finished in 1:38:50.

Nero 75th in IAAF World Half Marathon

Tonya Nero

T&T’s Tonya Nero ran a season’s best to place 75th at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff in the United Kingdom, yesterday. Nero, one of this country’s most successful long-distance runners, clocked one hour 19 minutes and 54 seconds in a race that had 85 participants.

After the race, in a Facebook post, Nero said: “It was a ten degrees Celsius, rainy and windy day in Cardiff. I was 75th out of 85 women at the Championships (1:19.54). I felt proud to hear the announcer say ‘And here is our Caribbean athlete coming through the finish line.’ I’m always happy to represent. Thank God for a safe race and great experience.”

As expected the Kenyan women dominated as they did in the 2014 in Copenhagen, when they achieved an unprecedented feat by filling the top five places.

This time around though two of the Ethiopian runners, who finished behind the Kenyan quintet in Copenhagen two years ago, Netsanet Gudeta and Genet Yalew, were keen to make it on to the podium.

However, they fell just short of that goal, but they were able to fill the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Gudeta crossed in 1:08.01 and Yalew in 1:08.15.

Emerging the winner was Kenyan Peres Jepchichir in a time of 1:07.31 with her teammates Cynthia Limo, the world leader, in second in 1:07.34 and Mary Wacera completing the Kenyan sweep by finishing third in 1:07.54.

Before 2014, no country had secured all of the medals in the women’s race at the IAAF half marathon, but Kenya has now pulled off the feat twice in a row.
