Sides reach tentative settlement agreement

Posted Nov 25 2011 7:03PM - Updated Nov 26 2011 12:10PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- After nearly two years of bickering, NBA players and owners are back on the same side.
"We want to play basketball," Commissioner David Stern said.
Come Christmas Day, they should be.
The sides reached a tentative agreement early Saturday to end the 149-day lockout and hope to begin the delayed season with a marquee tripleheader Dec. 25. Most of a season that seemed in jeopardy of being lost entirely will be salvaged if both sides approve the handshake deal.

Reports: Rockets acquire Gasol in 3-way deal

December 8, 2011
The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed in principle to a three-team deal that will bring New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul to the Lakers, according to multiple reports Thursday.

The Lakers have agreed to give up Pau Gasol and Lamar Odon in a trade that will also involve the Houston Rockets.

Under the terms of the deal, according to several reports, the Lakers will send Gasol to the Rockets. The Hornets will receive Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola. The Lakers will get Paul.

Although some details of the deal are not finalized, CBSSports.com reports that the Lakers' acquisition of Paul is "done."

The Hornets will receive a draft pick from the Rockets as part of the package for Paul.

Hornets general manager Dell Demps informed two of the other finalists for Paul on Thursday evening that he had a deal in place for Paul to go the Lakers, front-office sources told Yahoo.com.

Gasol has been with the Lakers the past 3 1/2 seasons, and he averaged 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds last season. Odom has played seven seasons with the Lakers, and he averaged 14.4 points and 8.7 boards last season.

Scola averaged 18.3 points and 8.2 rebounds for the Rockets last season.

Paul averaged a career-low 15.8 points and 9.8 assists in 2010-2011, which was his sixth season with New Orleans.

Acquiring Paul would put him in the same backcourt with Kobe Bryant.

NBA won't approve Paul trade to Lakers

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/articles/2011/12/08/ap_sources_paul_trade_to_lakers_in_the_works/

NEW ORLEANS—The NBA, owners of the New Orleans Hornets, refused Thursday to approve a three-team trade that would have sent Hornets All-Star guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"It's not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons," league spokesman Mike Bass said.

Yahoo Sports reported that NBA Commissioner David Stern killed the trade after several owners complained. Citing anonymous sources, Yahoo reported Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was one of the most vocal owners upset about the deal, done the same day as the end of the lockout, which was supposed to restore competitive balance in the league.

Owners and players ratified a new collective bargaining agreement Thursday, the final step to ending the five-month lockout and paving the way for training camps and free agency to open Friday.

There was hope in small markets like New Orleans that after the lockout it would be easier for teams to hold on to their biggest stars. Had the deal had been approved, one of the NBA's biggest stars from the league-owned small-market Hornets would have moved to one of the NBA's largest, richest markets.

The Hornets have been owned by the NBA since last December, when the league bought the club from founder George Shinn.

A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that the framework for a deal had been in place earlier Thursday, but that Paul would report to Hornets training camp Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks were supposed to remain confidential.

The proposed deal would have sent Lamar Odom from the Lakers to New Orleans and Pau Gasol from the Lakers to Houston. The Rockets also had agreed to send forward Louis Scola, shooting guard Kevin Martin, point guard Goran Dragic and a first-round draft choice to New Orleans.

If the Hornets are unable to figure out a trade for Paul, he would be able to opt out of his current contract after the upcoming season.

Speaking earlier Thursday, Hornets president Hugh Weber said the franchise has been preparing for months for the possibility that Paul would resist signing an extension in New Orleans, a move that would leave the Hornets with the choice of trading him or simply letting him walk in free agency at the end of the season.

"We've been preparing for this moment for over a year, and it's not like we were surprised or caught flat-footed," Weber said. "This is not a surprise. This is not something where we've been sitting around waiting to see what would happen. We've been managing this and taking control of the situation as best we can and we're going to have a team that we believe achieves that objective of making this community proud."

Paul, 26, averaged 15.8 points and 9.8 assists last season.

Despite the lockout and uncertainty over Paul's future, fan support has been building in New Orleans, where the team has advertised their season-ticket drive as an effort to lure a permanent local buyer who is committed to keeping the team in Louisiana.

The Hornets have increased their season ticket base from a little more than 6,000 last season to 10,019 as of Thursday afternoon.

Paul was drafted by the Hornets fourth overall out of Wake Forest in 2005.

He has been selected to the Western Conference All-Star squad the past four seasons and also was a member of the United States' Olympic gold medal-winning team in Beijing in 2008.

Capo is a clown yes  :rotfl:

We needed a point guard like TT football need a federation.  Losing Gasol is okay if Bynum is injury free.  Losing the 6th man is a tough one, he brings his A game usually when others are not producing, but having CP3 can change that equation.

Real people pissed off today. Stern show his true nature.
The Hornets were actually getting a pretty good deal, now these teams will have to deal with some sour players.

Yea the league is in ownership of the franchise until they find an owner to buy the team. They were operating at a loss and they started defaulting on loans so the NBA took over ownership to avoid a full collapse of the team (can't remember the full story). It's similar to the way how major league baseball took over the Dodgers from the owner because the club was going bankrupt.
I know the NBA owns it temporarily till they find a viable buyer, so Dutty if you want to buy a team, this is your opportunity...all I request is front row seats when the Lakers, Knicks, Thunder and Heat come to town ;D

As much as I don't agree with what's going on (maybe my Laker bias), in the new CBA from the lockout there's a clause in there that states the NBA has final approval on all trades. Now they have the right to stop a trade if the see fit, not sure of what the boundaries are. With the Hornets being owned by the NBA they fully excerised that right and claimed that Paul is "too valuable" to the city of New Orelans. Even with New Orleans fully benefitting with an ungraded roster.
At the end of the day, David Stern works for the owners as comissioner so when men like Dan Gilbert and other mid-small markets owners start bitching because of the threat of another big 3, I guess he has to look out for them first.

Chris Paul Trade Proposal Vetoed Again On Saturday, According To Report
Dec 11
8:02a
by Brian Floyd
http://www.sbnation.com/2011-nba-free-agency/2011/12/11/2627578/chris-paul-trade-off-vetoed-david-stern-los-angeles-lakers

The reported three-team trade that would've sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles is off after the Lakers pulled out of the deal on Saturday to send Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks. But why did the Lakers seemingly turn their backs on a deal that came so close to the finish line multiple times over the last four days? Connecting the dots, it would seem the leagues reported refusal to sign off on a second proposal, which was sent to it on Saturday, may  the cause.

Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski reports another proposal was sent to the league on Saturday, and vetoed again by the league office.

Quote
The Hornets had delivered a reconstructed framework of the three-team blockbuster trade that would have sent Paul to the Lakers into the NBA office for approval Saturday, but the NBA still refused to approve it.

Wojnarowski also quotes a source who says the league has become a headache as it middles with the Hornets.

Quote
“My initial reaction is, ‘Who wants to go through that headache with the NBA playing God?’ You want to do a deal. New Orleans’ front office wants to do a deal. And the third party – the NBA – says you can do it? Should I call Stern and see if they’re going to waive Patrick Ewing Jr., since he’s only partially guaranteed? ”

In the end, the Lakers gave up on any deal, instead shuttling Odom off to the Mavericks and moving on. What comes next for the Hornets as they try to get something for Paul, however, remains to be seen. If the last few days are any indication, dealing Paul is a mess, thanks in large part to the outside interference from above.

Los Angeles Clippers on verge of trade for Chris Paul, proposed deal has Eric Gordon, others, heading to Hornets

Pairing of point guard with Blake Griffin gives L.A.'s other team major star appeal
BY Mitch Lawrence
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Monday, December 12 2011, 1:12 PM

Chris Paul is on the verge of going to Los Angeles in a trade — just not to the Lakers.

NBA sources said Monday that the Hornets are close to trading their superstar playmaker to the Clippers, Staples Center's No. 2 tenants, where Paul will unite with Blake Griffin, giving the other team in L.A. one of the top two-man combos in the NBA.

The NBA, which owns the Hornets and already has rejected a trade of Paul to the Lakers, has been presented with the trade package and is expected to make a decision Monday.

Paul is expected to agree to a long-term deal after spending six seasons with the Hornets, one of the NBA's most troubled franchises.

The pricetag for Paul is said to be guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, second-year backup guard Eric Bledsoe, second-year forward Al-Farouq Aminu and an unprotected first-round draft pick from Minnesota.

Sources say the Clippers are trying to hold onto Gordon, the top player in the deal who averaged 22 ppg last season.

Gordon has to be part of the deal, or else it's not as attractive as what the Lakers offered the league-owned Hornets for Paul last week, which was shot down by the NBA, creating a firestorm of criticism against the league and commissioner David Stern.

The Lakers willing to part with two proven veterans — Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom — and the Hornets were going to send Gasol to Houston for Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and a No. 1 pick. That was seen as a good haul for one of the game's top players.

But Stern killed the deal after several owners objecting to the big-market Lakers getting another superstar at the expense of a struggling small-market team in New Orleans. With critics charging him with abusing his powers as commissioner, Stern ordered that the Hornets receive younger players or more draft picks for Paul.

Unable to give the NBA what it wanted, and frustrated by the stalemate, the Lakers pulled out of the deal late Saturday night, allowing the Clippers to make a run for one of the NBA's top players who had originally wanted to come to the Knicks to join buddy Carmelo Anthony. With the Clips, Paul would get to star with Griffin, last season's runaway Rookie of the Year winner.

Like the Lakers, the Knicks did not have the league-required assets to get a deal done, instead getting center Tyson Chandler from the defending champion Mavs in a three-way sign and trade with Washington.

Despite coming up short for Paul, the Lakers can still come away with a mega-star. They have redirected their focus to get Dwight Howard from Orlando in a deal. Like Paul, Howard can become a free agent in seven months and also wants to leave his present situation. The Lakers are one of three teams that Howard is talking to, including the Nets and Mavs. Although he reportedly is pushing for a deal to the Nets, Howard has dropped hints for the last several seasons that he would like to play in L.A.

That deal get shut down...Hornets/NBA front office being unreasonable now. They wanted Clippers to give up 4 players plus a draft pick for Paul. If they want to be greedy like that no one will do business with them and at the end of the day they'll loose Paul to free agency and get nothing in return, just like the Cavs.
