Tabarez's wife suffers acid attack

The wife of Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has been taken to hospital after an attacker threw acid over her as she walked home in Montevideo.

Silvia Martinez, the 61-year-old wife of Tabarez, was admitted to hospital with burns to 25% of her body - including her face and arms - after a motorbike passenger covered her in what police called a "corrosive liquid".

Little known fact: The online transportation medium called Uber was pioneered in Trinidad & Tobago in the 1960's. It was originally called pullin bull.

From what I gather:

1. Police have doubts regarding the version of the story as reported ... the reports are based on Tabarez's reports to the police (his wife was not in a condition to render the initial report).

2. When she "came to" her statements were deemed incoherent and inconsistent ... this prompted the judge to request that another/later questioning be conducted.

3. The substance used is thought to be acetone.

4. A former employee of the household (and her sister and ex-boyfriend) was viewed as a suspect ... that lead has apparently run cold.

5. However, it's noted that the former employee has a case pending against Tabarez at present. The attorney for the ex-employee has expressed that his client was in the company of relatives at the time of the incident (however it actually happened) ... and he has stressed that despite the "connection" established etc. ... the police have not interviewed his client or expressed an interest in interviewing the client. The attorney also indicated that he would like the circumstances to be clarified ASAP to avoid any prejudice to his client etc. and ... of course, given his defence function.

It seems that someone appropriated $500 from Tabarez's account ... this is tied up in the employee scene. I gather a successful prosecution was instituted.

6. Just before the wife ventured out to shop, the daughters had returned home to no danger. Wife wasn't gone that long apparently.

7. The police have been unable to find corroborating video evidence of the attack ... they have relied primarily on cameras from neighbouring households. Neither neighbours nor a private security guard at one of the homes have stated that they observed any movement on the street that would corroborate the presence of a motorbike with two attackers.

8. What is described as a "minor" incident took place 2 months ago at the house ... following which the family declined the stationing of a police presence at the household ... seems perhaps contradictory that a "minor" incident could provoke the offer of a police presence, but considering who he is and what he has helped Uruguayan football achieved ... it is what it was.

9. So ... all we know is she will recover physically :)

Clarification: $500,000 was the amount taken ... over the course of two years ... The account was not an account that was used frequently and the ex-employee got hold of the pin number associated with the account ... She used the card to buy either a pickup truck or SUV, a business and also to acquire property. She was released in the week prior to the attack ... hence the suspicion.

Because the victim hasn't so much as provided the colour of the bike and for other reasons outlined above, investigators have not ruled out that the harm was either self-inflicted or otherwise the product of a domestic incident.
