Corneal appointed TTFF Technical Director.

Corneal appointed TTFF Technical Director.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Anton Corneal has been appointed as the Technical Director of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation.

This was among some of the decisions taken at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the TTFF at its headquarters on Thursday.

According to TTFF Acting President Lennox Watson, Corneal’s selection to chart the way forward for T&T’s football from a technical standpoint was a fitting one considering his vast background as a player, coach and coaching instructor.

Watson revealed that the centre of the TTFF’s focus for the upcoming 2012 calendar will be its development programme which will see emphasis placed on the men’s national Under-23, Under-20 and Under-17 teams as well as the women’s Under-20 and Under-17 teams.

An interim technical staff has been appointed to oversee some of the senior team’s international friendlies with Hutson Charles and Angus Eve as the two coaches. Their first fixture is on January 22 vs Finland’s senior team at the Hasely Crawford Stadium at 5 pm.

Watson also said Otto Pfister’s contract as head coach of the Senior team will not be renewed. Pfister’s final match in charge of the  “Soca Warriors” was a 2-0 win over Guyana last November.

A TTFF technical committee was also approved and it includes Richard Quanchan as chairman, Rodill Clarke (Deputy chairman), Roland Forde, Marlon Morris, Wayne Riley, Jinelle James and Corneal.

“I feel satisfied that we have kick-started proceedings towards implementing some of the measures that will enhance the development of our football, more specifically our national youth teams that will supplement our Senior National teams,” Watson said yesterday.

Corneal meantime, in an immediate response to his appointment said he was truly honoured to be presented with the opportunity to serve in the capacity of technical director. “I feel honoured to help with the development of football in Trinidad and Tobago.

I have been the assistant Technical Director for several years with Mr Lincoln Phillips in which a development programme was implemented,” Corneal told said. “But due to of lack a funding many areas of the programme could not be realised. I believe our coaching education programme will be a key area to developing coaches at all levels of the game.

“A conscious effort must be made to synchronise our club football, colleges league and the Pro league with an emphasis on proper development. Coaching schools, community teams, primary schools and zonal teams will help form the foundation of our football.

These programmes are only possible with the support of the Government and the business community, I know with planning, implementation and patience we will see a better product in our National teams,” Corneal added.

Corneal qualified the T&T Under-17 team to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2007 and was assistant coach with the T&T Senior team at the 2006 World Cup Finals and Under-20 team at the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

He is also a FIFA Grassroots instructor. Corneal was an understudy to Leo Beenhakker at the 2006 World Cup. Head of the TTFF’s marketing agency All Sport Promotions Anthony Harford stated also that another statement in relation to court-related matters involving the TTFF will be issued in the near future.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Pfister axed as Warriors coach but...Corneal new Technical Director.
T&T Newsday Reports.

Otto Pfister will not be retained as coach of the Trinidad and Tobago “Soca Warriors” as the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) has decided not to renew his contract.

But his assistant Anton Corneal has been elevated to an administrative hot seat as he is now the TTFF Technical Director, according to a media release issued by the Federation yesterday.

The TTFF Executive Committee met at the Federation’s headquarters on Dundonald Street, Port-of-Spain on Thursday and, according to the release, acting TTFF president Lennox Watson revealed that the contract for the 74-year-old Pfister will not be renewed, after it expired on December 31.

Pfister, who was officially unveiled as Russell Latapy’s replacement last April, failed to guide the “Warriors” past the Second Round phase of the 2014 FIFA World Cup CONCACAF Zone qualifiers.

But the media release effectively centred on the appointment of Corneal as the Technical Director, taking up the post which was vacated by ex-Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips last May.

Corneal’s selection to chart the way forward for TT’s football from a technical standpoint, was a fitting one considering his vast background as a player, coach and coaching instructor, said Watson.

Corneal, who played five internationals in the 1980s, coached the national team to the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in South Korea, and was deputy to Zoran Vranes at the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt. He was also the assistant coach to Leo Beenhakker at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and also served as deputy to past TT coaches Joachim Figge (1995), Wim Rijsbergen (2006- 2007), Francisco Maturana (2008-2009) and Pfister.

From 2004, he was the TTFF Youth Development Officer and he was also a FIFA Grassroots Instructor.

“I feel honoured and honoured to help with the development of football in Trinidad and Tobago,” said Corneal. “I have been the assistant Technical Director for several years with Lincoln Phillips in which a development programme was implemented.”

He continued, “but due to of lack a funding many areas of the programme could not be realised.

“These programmes are only possible with the support of the Government and the business community, I know with planning, implementation and patience we will see a better product in our national teams,” ended Corneal.

Watson, who took over from Oliver Camps as TTFF head last November, pointed out that the TTFF will pay specific attention on its development program this year, with emphasis on the men’s Under-23, Under-20, Under-17 and Under-15 teams, as well as the women’s Under-20 and Under-17 squads.

Hutson “Barber” Charles and Angus Eve, two former national midfielders, will serve as joint coaches on an interim basis, including the forthcoming friendly international against Finland at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on January 22.

Watson said, “I feel satisfied that we have kick-started proceedings towards implementing some of the measures that will enhance the development of our football, more specifically our national youth teams that will supplement our (men) national teams.”

The TTFF Technical Committee was also approved, with Richard Quan Chan as the chairman, with Rodill Clarke as his deputy.

Corneal is also part of the Technical Committee, along with Northern Football Association (NFA) president Roland Forde, ex-national forward Marlon Morris, former TT women team midfielder Jinelle James and Wayne Riley.

In related news, head of the TTFF’s marketing agency (All Sport Promotions) Anthony Harford stated that another statement, in relation to court-related matters involving the TTFF, will be issued in the next few weeks.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Tallman= Creativity at its Best- Benjai sums it up beautifully, we fed up with the same thing over and over.
What you may ask is the same thing or should I say Insanity- Anton will play the local guys until the Caribbean Cup. Then add a few foreign  players to the mix. Well depending on our performance at the Caribbean Cup a Foreign big named Coach will be installed to take us to the Gold Cup.
Same thing over and Over- If Eve can get us to the Olympics he will be the national Coach until W/C qualifiers a la Whitmore for Jamaica.

Well...I'm no fan of Anton Corneal and LORD knows he was largely a failure as coach of the various national teams he was in charge of. That said I'm not an Anton Corneal "hater" either.

Taking a step back from the gut reaction I felt when I read the headline  "Oh No! Not a Corneal apponitment.  Jes same shit different day"....maybe this sort of position is where he's best suited.

T&T too small and have too few resources to simply discard someone with the amount of experience and who has done all the required certification courses as Anton has. A lot of the criticism of Anton is because of his father and that's something he has no control over.  Some of the criticism also comes from what he has done and only HE is responsible for that.

Given the TTFF's financial situation it is unlikely that we will be able to afford a foreign TD even if that's the direction in which we wanted to go.  Therefore, if it's a local to fill the position of TD, who else would have been better qualified and more appropriate for the position?

Not every successful player is a successful coach.  Poor or average players have gone on to be excellent coaches.  Similarly, not every successful coach would make a successful TD.  Maybe a poor coach could do a good job as TD.  Certainly the position calls for a more macro level vision that that of coach

Words cannot express my utter horror and disgust  :pissedoff: at this appointment. Anton Corneal?..really..REALLY :frustrated:!! Some say give him a chance. What they fail to realize is that at this level, you don't experiment with a position like this. Remember Latapy? A TD is a person who is battle tested with the knowledge, experience and credentials that proves he is a proper candidate.
If anyone compares Mr Corneal's resume next to Mr Pfister's, they would certainly question how in the world was he (Corneal) even considered for the position.
On behalf of the real football fans of this country I would like to apologize to Mr Pfister. I am sorry Sir, that you were not given any time whatsoever to do your job properly. I am sorry that you had to deal with the total garbage of a disorganized organization called the TTFF who, instead of keeping you here to learn from your vast experience on many levels in the world game, instead has hired someone with next to nothing experience, who might I add, has never won anything at club or national level.
How quickly we forget that every campaign that Mr Corneal has been in charge or a part of (U17 world cup anyone?) has been total failure. Yet we reward him with the highest national post in the sport? I have no doubt that a few years down the road, Mr Corneal will have acquired the necessary qualities that will make him a viable candidate. But certainly not now!!! Not in our darkest hour!!!
This appointment proves without a doubt, that T&T football died with the 2006 world cup team and that the TTFF executive are just a bunch of puppets that need to be removed. God help us all. Strike Squad FOREVER! Milky was here.
Only the humble can be truly great!

He has the makings to be a far better TD than he was a coach. Some of his ideas, particularly the question of how to wean us off outdated views of schoolboy football and restructure it as a developmental tool will be very interesting if implemented.

But sober second thought tells me that Corneal is but one man, and still has a lot to prove to his critics, and the TTFF is still the same old ineffective, lazy, disrespectful, unaccountable, closed off,  wutless gang of snakes .

The only thing Anton Corneal has proven himself to be is a stooge and a yes man for the TTFF. The TTFF and Anton Corneal is one and the same, no difference. These fellas talk a good game, but when come to crunch time, you getting the same song and dance, they not even remixing it.

Remember how he treated the players after the loss in Mexico, think about what he will demand from players. These fellas have been involved for so long and has shown absolutely zero interest in truly moving T&T football forward. They want to coach teams and be involved, but not responsible.

Everyone keep saying he has all this experience, but does experiencing something makes you good at it? Or even able to put that experience to use where it benefit the players and the game?

Corneal named TTFF technical director.
By: Lasana Liburd (wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) Acting President Lennox Watson announced today, via press release, that long-time senior team assistant coach, Anton Corneal, is the new national football team technical director.

Corneal was awarded a four-year contract, which suggests that he will bear long-term responsibility for arresting the decline in the local game.

A new TTFF technical committee was also selected and will comprise of Chairman Richard Quanchan, Deputy Chairman Rodill Clarke and ordinary members Roland Forde, Marlon Morris, Wayne Riley, Jinelle James and Corneal.

Corneal apart, Quanchan is the only technical committee member with international coaching experience—and that came in field hockey. Morris, who unsuccessfully contested the post of Northern Football Association (NFA) president last year, is a former international footballer while James is a former national women's player.

"I feel satisfied that we have kickstarted proceedings towards implementing some of the measures that will enhance the development of our football," stated Watson.

Corneal described the appointment as an honour and promised to further the coaching education programs done under his predecessor and former boss, Lincoln "Tiger" Phillips.

"A conscious effort must be made to synchronize our club football, colleges' league and the Pro league with an emphasis on proper development," said Corneal. "I know with planning, implementation and patience we will see a better product in our national teams."

Corneal scotched any suggestion that he would take charge of the senior team for the January 22 international against Finland or thereafter. He told Wired868 that his role would be largely administrative and is unlikely to encroach on the duties of interim head coach Hutson "Barber" Charles and his assistant Angus Eve.

"I would have loved to coach the senior team but youth development is where I feel I can help the most," Corneal told Wired868. "It is a dream of any coach (to be the head national coach) but sometimes you have to sit down and think about where you can help the most. I feel I can help more in developing players.

"The senior team coaching job is short term and involves dealing with players already developing. You either win or lose and live on your results."

Corneal, an articulate and fastidious personality, is viewed with suspicion by some contemporaries and football fans for his perceived ability to land plum positions without earning his spurs. He has never worked at local Pro League level while Trinidad and Tobago's disastrous Brazil 2014 World Cup campaign further highlights his uncanny survival instincts.

National head coach Otto Pfister, a German native, was mocked and sacked for the early exit by the "Soca Warriors". Corneal, his assistant, was promoted instead.

The significant shadow of his father, Alvin Corneal—a national Hall of Fame player, former international senior coach and FIFA Technical Committee member—also meant that he faced an uphill struggle in dispelling notions of bias.

Yet, as youth coach, he can point to the fact that he routinely took teams to the final CONCACAF stage while qualification for the 2007 Korea Under-17 World Cup is the highlight of his résumé. He is only the second local to take a team to a FIFA tournament after Bertille St Clair—although the latter finished second in CONCACAF in 1991 while Corneal's era saw five of nine teams advance to the final.

His coaching prowess might be a moot point anyway. As technical director, his role is not to outmaneuver opponents but to implement policy and relay ideas within his own fraternity.

Corneal listed his responsibilities as: the capacity to communicate and motivate, expertise in football education in the areas of grassroots and youth development and organisation and leadership skills.

"I think I fit the bill comfortably," said Corneal, who began operating as a FIFA Grassroots Instructor last month. "I have been doing some of those things before."

Corneal, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Erskine College in South Carolina and an array of coaching certificates including A' Licenses in the United States and Germany, appears to tick the right boxes. He claimed to relish the chance to use football as a vehicle to teach life skills and to create better citizens.

"I am hoping if we do it in football other sports will also do it," said Corneal, "and we will play a role in developing a better Trinidad and Tobago."

The TTFF might have complicated matters for Corneal when, last October, General Secretary Richard Groden took Caledonia AIA coach Jamaal Shabazz to act in the vacant technical director role at a FIFA conference in Guadalajara, Mexico. Shabazz, a month later, gave further indication of his potential when he led Guyana to a decisive 2014 World Cup qualifying win over the "Soca Warriors", which sealed the immediate coaching futures of Pfister and Corneal.

Guyana's relative success means that Shabazz is not immediately available to the TTFF. But he would surely have accepted the post had it been kept open to him—whether he is better suited to this role is another matter entirely.

Regardless, the TTFF Executive Committee has chosen Corneal for a role that has more to do with communication, workrate and long-term vision than rousing halftime speeches and snap touchline decisions. It might be a better fit than some would care to admit.

Corneal relishes new role.
T&T Newsday Reports.

NEW TECHNICAL director of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation, Anton Corneal, has indicated his readiness to undertake challenges associated with the highly scrutinised role and to outline key assignments critical to his tenure.

The appointment, scheduled for a four-year period, approved by the Executive Committee of the TTFF last Thursday, commences with Corneal leading a key role in the TTFF Elite Coaches Symposium at 9 am from January 15-17 at the Media Work Room, Larry Gomes Stadium.

Corneal will be the focal point of the National Technical Programme, working alongside the coaches of the various national team units and within the local club/school setup.

Several highly respected and regarded coaches, from both the Men’s and Women’s teams, will partake in the symposium as the TTFF embarks on establishing a pool of coaches with the objective of identifying, distinguishing and analysing the direction that TT football needs to head in under the stead of these coaches.

The mantle of instruction will also be shared by Edgar Vidale, Neville Chance and Alvin Corneal in the workshop. Notable invitees are current joint interim national team coaches, Angus Eve and Hutson Charles; as well the likes of former national stars in Clint Marcelle, Dale Saunders, Mike McComie, Ross Russell, Anthony Rougier and Clayton Morris.

In compliance with FIFA’s outline, Corneal will be charged with elevating the profile and improving the image of the role that local coaches are held responsible for. Emphasis will be placed on clubs’ obligation to install and utilise certified coaches; implementing national coaching licensing programmes (already ongoing through the ‘C’ license course) and implementing a national talent identification and scouting system. Other facets to be managed and executed include organising seminars involving distinct international game analysis, fitness and goalkeeping courses; regulation checks on academies, clubs (private inclusive); coach education and development; as well as annual refresher’s courses.

Focus is also to be maintained on establishing elite training centres and facilities to ensure appropriate training of young, talented players coming up in the ranks and shepherding the best players in at national, regional and club levels.

The programme also has on its mandate the ushering in and progression of primary school football and other youth movements as the youth levels are incorporated into more developed football activities.

On the expansive manifesto set out, Corneal divulged, “It’s a lot of work based on the outline but it’s not something that is new to me. Actually, we have some of these things already in place and it’s a matter of carrying it out in the right form or manner that will allow us to improve on what there is at the moment.”

Rounding out the roster of coaches and ex-players invited are Derek King, Sean Cooper, Terrance Marcelle, Philbert Jones, Kevin Jeffery, Anthony Streete, Stuart Charles, Leonson Lewis, Terrance Williams, Brian Williams, Dion La Foucade, Marlon Charles, Richard Hood, Izler Browne, Stephan De Four, Rajesh Latchoo and Peter Pierre.

Yeah, look ma, no wings but I can fly. I am the shit now. I am too sexy for my shirt, too sexy for my shirt, too sexy.

Ron La Forest, Archibald, Cummings, Spanner, De Leon, Figaro, Murrren, Llewellyn, Carpette, Cave, David, Douglas, just to name a few. I am the man now and I am telling you don't  even bother showing up at this symposium. Your ideas are not welcomed here. If you show up I will have you arrested for having opinions that are in direct conflict of interest with the development of football in this country. I am the HNIC now. You maybe true legends of the game to some but not in this HNIC opinions. As for you Mr.Fenwick, "No white man is going to come to my country and tell me what to do" (Jack Austin Warner)
I am the punishment of God...If you had not comitted great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.

Gally criticises "hasty" Corneal appointment
By Lasana Liburd (wired868.com)

Ex-Trinidad and Tobago national football team standout player and coach, Everald "Gally" Cummings, today criticised the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) for its "haste" in appointing former assistant coach Anton Corneal as technical director.

Corneal, who received a four-year contract to oversee the development of the local game, began work today at a TTFF Elite Coaches Symposium in the Larry Games Stadium, Malabar.

However, Cummings insisted that the TTFF should have held an analysis of its unsuccessful 2014 World Cup campaign before making long term appointees—particularly when the appointee, Corneal, was a key component of the "Soca Warriors" humiliating first round elimination.

"This is a very important national issue which will have a long term impact on our future development in football and sport in this country," stated Cummings, who famously took Trinidad and Tobago within a point of the Italy 1990 World Cup and is a Hall of Fame inductee as a player.

"The Minister of Sport and, by extension, the Government should not fund any such long term appointments until a proper analysis is made. (This) brings me to question what was the purpose and recommendations coming out of the Symposium held recently by the Ministry of Sport, which was also held at significant cost.

"All appointments should be on an interim basis at this stage and only where absolutely necessary. Instead what we are seeing is individuals trying to jump the gun and install themselves in positions."

Acting TTFF President Lennox Watson said Corneal's appointment was made by its executive committee on Thursday.

Corneal is one of two local coaches—after Bertille St Clair—to take the country to a FIFA tournament after he steered the "Soca Warriors" into the Korea 2007 Under-17 World Cup. However, his reputation was not helped by less successful stints as assistant coach to Francisco Maturana and Otto Pfister.

Cummings, who is the head coach at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), suggested that Corneal's father, Anton Corneal, a FIFA Technical Study member and former TTFF Technical Advisor, might play a role in his ability to get desirable jobs.

"When Russell Latapy lost matches (as coach), he was fired," Cummings told Wired868, "and it was the same for Pfister. So why is it always different for Corneal?

"Is it because of his father's role?"

Alvin and Anton Corneal are the main instructors at today's Elite Coaching Symposium along with Neville Chance and Edgar Vidale. The Symposium aims to empower an army of coaches who are earmarked to help lift the standard of the local game.

The 25 invited coaches are: Hutson Charles, Angus Eve, Derek King, Sean Cooper, Clint Marcelle, Dale Saunders, Terrance Marcelle, Philbert Jones, Michael McComie, Kevin Jeffrey, Ross Russell, Anthony Streete, Stuart Charles-Fevrier, Leonson Lewis, Anthony Rougier, Terrance Williams, Clayton Morris, Brian Williams, Dion La Foucade, Marlon Charles, Izler Browne, Stephan De Four, Rajesh Latchoo and Peter Pierre.
