‘Warriors’ eager to impress against Finland.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago striker Devorn Jorsling believes that the “Soca Warriors” can be top contenders in Concacaf again and is urging his teammates to prove him right in Sunday’s friendly international against Finland at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 5 pm on Sunday.

Jorsling was among the players who went through an intense session at the Ato Boldon Stadium yesterday. He is one of the more experienced players named in a final 20-man squad by coach Hutson Charles, who along with Under 23 head coach Angus Eve, is overseeing the team for Sunday’s friendly.

Tobago-born forward Keon Boucher of St Clair Coaching School, San Juan Jabloteh’s Willis Plaza, Under 23 trio Leslie Russell, Jean Luc Rochford, Aquil Selby and former national under 20 defender Curtis Gonzales are the newcomers. The experienced faces include Clyde Leon, goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, Kendall Jagdeosingh, Akeem Adams, Hayden Tinto, Seon Power and Ataullah Guerra.

Jorsling said Sunday’s encounter is a perfect opportunity to assess the talent available. “I think everyone is really looking forward to it. Not only because it’s the first match but players like myself are still anxious to get over the defeat to Guyana.

“The only way to do that is to  play international matches and get results. We simply have to keep playing and start winning matches and producing good football on the pitch,” said the former Orlando City forward.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Finland expect tough ‘Warriors’ challenge

Finland expect tough ‘Warriors’ challenge.
T&T Newsday Reports.

FINLAND COACH Mixu Paatalainen is expecting a formidable match when they encounter the Soca Warriors tomorrow at the Hasely Crawford in Mucurapo from 5 pm.

The ex-Finnish international and former Hibernian teammate of Russell Latapy, put his team through two rigorous training sessions yesterday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima as they gear up for the clash.

“We’re definitely looking forward to the match. We didn’t just come here without thinking about our plans and of course, our selection of opponent is based on quality.

We know Trinidad and Tobago has strong, athletic and also, quick players, and they’ve been to a World Cup, which is a great feat. So yes, I’m looking forward to a good, competitive match on Sunday,” Paatalainen relayed to the media.

Included in the visitors’ squad is young Fulham goalie, Jesse Joronen, along with promising Swedish-based duo, Kasper Hamalainen and Daniel Sjolund (Djurgardens IF); Riku Riski of Norwegian club, Honefoss BK; Juha Hakola of Ferencvarosi; Esbjerg’s Lukas Hradecky; Mikko Sumusalo of Sweden’s Malmo; and Paulus Arajuuri (Sweden’s Kalmar) as the foreign contingent boasts youth players, that Paatalainen looks to groom for the future on the heels of another failed World Cup run.

“We have a lot of good young players in the squad for Sunday including some local-based players and a few others from outside of Finland like places such as Sweden and Norway.

So far, our preparations have gone pretty well. Obviously, it’s a lot hotter here than it is for us back at home but we’re out here for our winter-break training and we’ll make the most of it,” expounded the former Kilmarnock boss.

With Spain and France waiting in the wings for Finland’s upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, Paatalainen maintained, “We’ve never been to a World Cup before but we have a good bunch of players who are willing to work hard and very eager to do well.

That’s encouraging for me and we’ll prepare as best and work as hard as possible to get ready for those games. From Trinidad, we’ll head off for another friendly against Austria. Generally, we want to be as strong as possible in these friendlies starting with Sunday’s match.”

W Connection’s midfield engine, Clyde Leon, vowed a disciplined performance from TT as he pledged, “We know this is a friendly international and once you play teams like these from Europe then you can be sure they won’t be easy to play against.

At the same time, we don’t intend to be pushed over easily. We are in a rebuilding phase and the coaches are looking at different players but we, as players, know how important it is to perform well and get a good result on the day.”

Local interim coaches, Hutson Charles and Angus Eve, will take the Soca Warriors through another training session today while the TT Under-23 team commence their Tobago training camp from tomorrow in anticipation of the Finland encounter at Bacolet’s Dwight Yorke Stadium this Wednesday from 6 pm.

TT Under-23 squad vs Finland - Sheldon Bateau (San Juan Jabloteh); Jamal Gay, Trevin Caesar, Aquil Selby, Micah Lewis, Zane Coker, Nuru Mohammad (Caledonia AIA); Kareem Moses, Cameron Roget (St Anns Rangers); Mekeil Williams, Jomal Williams, Andre Quashie, Leslie Russell (W Connection); Jayson Joseph (T&TEC); Jeromie Williams, Kaydion Gabriel, Andre Marchan, Jean-Luc Rochford, Earl Joseph (North East Stars); Sheldon Clarke, Curtis Gonzales, Fitzbert Alleyne (Defence Force); Marcus Chandoor (WASA); Kevin Molino, Qian Grovesnor, Stephan Berkeley, Bradley Welch, Michael Roopchandsingh (Overseas).

Youthful Warriors tackle Finland

Youthful Warriors tackle Finland
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

The Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain should be brimming with youthful verve tomorrow evening as a youthful Trinidad and Tobago squad host a similarly fresh-faced Finnish outfit in a warm-up match from 5 pm.

Wired868.com will allow readers to follow the action via a live, interactive news feed.

The Trinidad and Tobago senior squad is preparing for this June's Digicel Caribbean Cup in Antigua and Barbuda while Finland opens its 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign this September against France.

Only two Finnish players, midfielders Daniel Sjolund and Kasper Hamalainen, have more than ten international caps each as coach Mixu Paatelainen has travelled with a young and largely home-based team.

The host nation, with an eye on the Olympic qualifying series in March, has included 10 under-23 players in its 20-man squad. Three of the remaining players, San Juan Jabloteh's Willis Plaza, Defence Force's Richard Roy and St Clair Coaching School's Keon Boucher, are debutantes.

W. Connection holding midfielder Clyde Leon is the most experienced player for either side with 38 caps while T&TEC goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, DirecTV North East Stars defender Seon Power and Caledonia AIA striker Devorn Jorsling will add know-how to the "Soca Warriors". Phillips will wear the captain's armband in place of absent Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones.

The national senior team is coached by former "Strike Squad" stand-out Hutson "Barber" Charles and Olympic team coach Angus Eve, who remains the most capped player in Trinidad and Tobago's history with 117 outings and 34 goals.

On the opposite bench, Paatelainen was a burly international striker in his playing days and was a teammate and close friend of local icon Russell Latapy at Scottish top flight club, Hibernian.

T&T:
Marvin Phillip, Andre Marchan, Leslie Russell, Curtis Gonzales, Mekeil Williams, Seon Power, Akeem Adams, Joevin Jones, Clyde Leon, Jean Luc Rochford, Sean De Silva, Atulla Guerra, Aquil Selby, Hayden Tinto, Kevin Molino, Kendall Jagdeosingh, Devorn Jorsling, Willis Plaza, Richard Roy, Keon Boucher.
