'Dozens killed' in clashes at match in Egypt

More than 70 people are reported to have died in clashes after a football match in Egypt.

Hundreds of the winning team's fans poured onto the field after the match in Port Said ended.

A security official says they attacked players and fans of their opponents and one report suggested fans had gone to the stadium armed with knives.

It is feared the death toll will rise, it is being reported, as many people were injured.

The fans chased the players and cornered their supporters on the field and around the stadium, throwing stones and bottles at them, according to the security official.

Al-Masry won a rare 3-1 victory against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team in the port city.

The two teams have a long history of bad blood, and clashes have erupted in recent years between their fans.

Thousands of supporters covered the field, according to a video posted online.

Egypt's health ministry said at least 40 were killed.

A medic at a morgue in Port Said, a city on the Mediterranean coast, said some of the dead were security officers.

The causes of the deaths were not immediately known.

The players were later taken to the dressing room for protection, Sayed Hamdi, a player, told state TV.

Soon after the violence, a match in the Cairo Stadium between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek was called off in mourning for the violence.

State TV showed video of sections of the Cairo stadium on fire.

The announcer said angry fans of the Zamalek protested the cancellation and set some sections of the stadium on fire.

Egyptian official: 73 dead, hundreds hurt in riots after soccer game
By the CNN Wire Staff

Cairo (CNN) -- At least 73 people were killed when riots broke out after a soccer game Wednesday in Egypt, the country's deputy health minister said.
At least 180 others were injured in the riots, the deputy minister said.
The fighting occurred in a stadium in the northeastern city of Port Said after a match between the Al-Ahly team and Port Said's Al-Masry team.
"It's kind of a security vacuum in the football stadium. ... It's not unheard of to have organized violence between football clubs, but something on this scale has never been seen before," said James Montague, a CNN contributor who researched soccer in the Middle East for his book "When Friday Comes: Football in the War Zone."

Seems like Egypt entering an ARAB WINTER.
Simllar scenes could happen in Libya where there is no solid Governance and law and order is sketchy at best.

Speculation: tribal related rather than football related.
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Egypt football riots: prime minister sacks Egypt Football Association's board as Fifa demand investigation into tragedy
telegraph.co.uk

Egypt's prime minister has dissolved the Egyptian Football Association's board and referred its members for questioning by prosecutors after post-match clashes that left 74 dead.

Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri announced the decision during Thursday's emergency parliamentary session, a day after a match between Al-Ahly and Al-Masry soccer teams in the Mediterranean city of Port Said turned deadly.

El-Ganzouri also says the governor of Port Said province and the area's police chief have resigned.

Witnesses had said that riot police stood by as supporters of home team Al-Masry rushed the field after their 3-1 win over Al-Ahly.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Fifa has demanded a full report into the violence amid claims that security forces and police did not do enough to intervene.

Fifa, the game's world governing body, today asked the Egyptian authorities to explain exactly what happened.

"Fifa has asked the Egyptian authorities for a full report on the incidents in order to evaluate what happened."

In a letter to Egyptian FA president Samir Zaher, the world governing body's president Blatter offered support and said: "Today is a black day for football and we must take steps to ensure that such a catastrophe never happens again.

"Football is a force for good and we must not allow it to be abused by those who mean evil. I await further news from you concerning the circumstances of this tragedy."

Home fans reportedly armed with sticks and knives stormed the field after the final whistle.

Reports suggest some Al-Ahly fans suffocated, trapped in a narrow corridor as they fled the violence.

Al-Ahly's Portuguese coach Manuel Jose has returned to Portugal to ponder his future after being attacked, while his assistant coach Pedro Barny backed up the claims that security staff did too little.

Jose said: "I was beaten with fists and kicks to the neck, head and feet. I saw our fans die before us and we are unable to do anything."

Assistant coach Barny added: "What happened was an unspeakable catastrophe.

"From the beginning of the game, the fans of the opposing team's fans were allowed to fire rockets and stones at us without any intervention.

"In the end, it turned into a state of madness without any role for the security in the stands.

"We tried to save the lives of some of the fans, but many died before our eyes."

The Prime Minister didn't waste time, he sacked the board already.
