Boss: Birchall deal not done
By: Sky Sports

Port Vale boss Micky Adams insists reports the club have re-signed Chris Birchall are premature.

It was reported on Thursday that the former Vale midfielder had returned to Staffordshire to link back up with the League Two outfit.

However, while admitting he is hopeful of signing Birchall following his release by LA Galaxy, Adams has revealed talks over a proposed month-by-month deal are yet to be completed.

Adams told Vale's official website: "I was surprised to read Chris Birchall had signed because international clearance has not arrived and we are still to sort some other issues.

"I also smiled to myself when I saw he was playing for free - because you don't get anything for free in football.

"Hopefully we can get something completed but we aren't there yet."

Winger says he is prepared to play for free under Adams (Sky Sports)

Chris Birchall says he is prepared to play for free in order to help out former club Port Vale on a short-term basis.

The winger is training with Vale following his departure from the Los Angeles Galaxy and the League Two club are ready to hand the 27-year-old a month-to-month deal.

Birchall, who made over 90 appearances for Vale before leaving for Coventry City in 2006, is willing to offer his services to manager Micky Adams for nothing.

"I've got a few things in the pipeline and one of those may happen in April or May," Birchall told The Sentinel.

"I spoke to Micky Adams and said that if he needs my services until then I'd be more than happy to help out.

"I'd play for free because I live locally, it would keep me fit and the club means a lot to me. But it's about whether Micky thinks I'd benefit the team.

"We have a good relationship because I played under him at Coventry and Brighton. I would only do this for him.

"I don't like to see the club struggle in terms of a lack of bodies and finances so if I can help, I will."

MLS not taken seriously in some quarters, says Birchall

MLS not taken seriously in some quarters, says Birchall
The Sentinel

CHRIS Birchall fears his three-year stint playing for LA Galaxy could hinder his chances of proving himself in the higher echelons of the English game.

The 27-year-old midfielder, from Newcastle, left America at the end of December after helping Galaxy claim the Major League Soccer Cup.

Birchall is now training with former club Port Vale, where he hopes to tie up a month-to-month deal while he weighs up his next career move.

Birchall scored nine goals in 91 appearances for Vale before boss Micky Adams signed him for Championship side Coventry City in August 2006 for £325,000.

But after Adams was sacked five months later Birchall fell out of favour under his successors Iain Dowie and Chris Coleman.

After making just 18 league starts for the Sky Blues, and following loan spells with St Mirren and Carlisle, Adams rescued Birchall by taking him to Brighton in January 2009.

The Trinidad international believes he still has what it takes to cut it in the second tier – despite the stigma attached with playing in the MLS.

"I'm confident I can play in the Championship, but it's hard to convince managers," said Birchall, who trained with League One side Oldham before linking up with the Valiants.

"I did well at Coventry under Micky, but when new managers come in they have their own ideas, so I had to leave.

"When you have played in the MLS you get more respect from players than you do from managers.

"Some managers still think there's that stigma of playing in the MLS and only certain players can play at a higher level. But when I've trained with Oldham and Vale some of the players said they envied me for playing in LA.

"From a manager's point of view, though, they don't see the standard as being so high."

Birchall joined the Galaxy from Brighton in 2009 and made his debut by replacing former England captain David Beckham, right, in a 3-1 win at the New York Red Bulls. In all, he made 66 competitive appearances, including 50 starts, for the Galaxy.

But Birchall decided to leave Bruce Arena's side after facing the prospect of a pay-cut if he accepted the option of playing for a further year.

And he says the fact fiancee Lucy and their young son Ashley could only spend 90 days in America due to visa issues weighed heavily on his mind.

"If I had made 20 starts last season I would have had the automatic option of taking the extra-year option and been paid more money," explained Birchall.

"But because I made 19 starts the option was taken out of my hands and it was then up to Galaxy to make me an offer.

"I knew they weren't going to offer me an increased wage, but I didn't expect to be offered less money than what I was already earning.

"There are no hard feelings because we ended up winning everything last season, plus I have a good relationship with the management and coaching staff.

"The manager knew my intention to come back to England even if I had been offered the better option because I wanted to see what my options are.

"The fact Lucy and Ashley could only spend 90 days with me at a time was the main problem.

"It was becoming such a hassle for her to keep flying our son out to America and it was expensive.

"One of the highlights of living in LA was the lifestyle, although the big drawback was spending time away from my family."

I like Birchy, but come on now.  Do you really think they envied you (and that Beckham and Keane went to L.A.) because of the standard of football?

Chris Birchall plays 84 minutes for Port Vale reserves
BBC Sport

Chris Birchall pulled on a Port Vale shirt for the first time in six years on Wednesday, playing for the reserves in their 1-1 draw against Walsall.

The 27-year-old played 84 minutes for Vale in the Central League match.

Ryan Jarvis scored a late equaliser for the Saddlers after Kingsley James had put Vale ahead from the penalty spot.

Birchall turned down a new contract with LA Galaxy at the end of the MLS season and has offered to play for Vale, his first club, for free .

The last of his 91 first-team appearances for the Valiants came in a 3-1 home win against Chesterfield in April 2006, four months before a £300,000 move to Coventry City.

Birchall in line for Valiants appearance

Birchall in line for Valiants appearance
The Sentinel

CHRIS Birchall has received the green light to start his second spell with Port Vale after being granted international clearance.

The 27-year-old midfielder, from Newcastle, has agreed a month-to-month deal and could make his debut in tomorrow's match at Northampton (3pm).

Birchall, who left American side LA Galaxy in December, had been training with the Valiants and played in Wednesday's 1-1 reserve-team draw with Walsall.

He previously made 91 appearances for Vale between 2001 and 2006.

However, the former Coventry and Brighton midfielder is likely to start on the substitutes' bench at Sixfields as he continues to build up his fitness.

Birchall's inclusion in the travelling party increases boss Micky Adams's selection dilemma.

Fellow newcomers Chris Shuker and Paul Marshall impressed after coming on as substitutes in last Saturday's 2-1 victory over Gillingham at Vale Park.

The Valiants were trailing before Adams threw on the duo, who were instrumental in the late turnaround as Sean Rigg and Marc Richards scored inside the last 10 minutes.

"I'd like to think we will play better in the first hour tomorrow," said Adams.

"The players looked a little bit lethargic and tired – that can't happen again on Saturday because we could be out of the game in the first hour.

"But credit to the boys because they stuck to their tasks and kept going against Gillingham.

"The substitutions helped, so it's a dilemma over which team to pick because the boys who came off the bench last weekend all did themselves a lot of good.

"They also revitalised the team at a crucial stage and helped us pick up three points."

Port Vale hit by transfer embargo

Port Vale hit by transfer embargo
BBC Sport

Port Vale have been put under a transfer embargo by the Football League because of an unpaid bill.

A statement by the League Two club  read: "The club is unable to go into further details at the moment but is hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon."

The embargo means that they cannot complete the signing of 27-year-old midfielder Chris Birchall.

Vale are currently contesting a play-off place and sit eighth in the table.

Port Vale manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke: "I can't say this has been easy but I've seen it all before. I'm not a young manager who's never seen anything or is phased by it.

"My focus is trying to keep the players away from it as best I can and try and keep them focussed on getting results."

Port Vale Supporters Club chairman Pete Williams said: "I'm absolutely appalled at what has happened.

"It only goes to show that it's absolutely imperative, if we want Port Vale to survive, to remove this present board.

"Obviously now the Football League have looked at the situation and they can see there is a tremendous amount of debt at the club."

FC Business Magazine editor Ryan McKnight said: "It's massively serious because the Football League doesn't want to do these type of things.

"But they are trying to create a solvent and moral, from a business perspective, set of leagues and that is why they are being very heavy handed with clubs.

"It doesn't mean that Port Vale are going to be in administration on Monday, but it is a few steps towards the likelihood of that happening."

Coops, doh play in yuh ass nah, how you want de man to play in de T&T league and every time a scout have to see him or he have to trial he have to fly thousands of miles, that dont make sence. You buying he ticket ?

He is playing with Port Vale where de standard better that T&T so he will be a certain level in his play, T&T club does trian like is ring around de possie, he will be close to his family and he will be close to the clubs that may sign him.

De man have a aim and that is to play home. he giving back to his home club.

Stern John came home and play for $20,000 a month and scored one goal and then bad talk de club...

I am aware that he left La Galaxy to head back to Port Vale but he hasn't been signed as the club was going through some financial constraints. This was early March  anybody have any updates?
