U.S. Soccer responds to El Salvador players' beliefs they were handed airline tickets meant for eliminated Americans

El Salvador U-23 players complained about receiving a piece of paper with American names printed prior to their flight, a situation U.S. Soccer claims is a big misunderstanding.

El Salvador U-23 players felt disrespected when they viewed their names penciled in above the printed names of U.S. team players on what they believed were boarding passes prior to their charter flight from Nashville to Kansas City for the knockout phase of Olympic qualifying.

But the entire situation is one big mix up, according to U.S. Soccer.

A U.S. team spokeman told Goal.com that the pieces of paper that appeared to be tickets (pictured above) were "merely placeholders" for seats on El Salvador's charter. The official said that the placeholders were created well before the tournament began using names of players from two randomly selected teams from each of the two groups.

"A month before the tournament, airline tickets had to be purchased in order to confirm seats for the four unknown semifinalist that would be traveling to Kansas City," said U.S. Soccer's manager of communications Neil Buethe wrote in an email to Goal.com.
"To purchase the tickets, a full name and date of birth of each individual is required by the airline. The names provided to the airline were merely placeholders."

The U.S. U-23 team was the favorite to win Group A of the qualifying tournament, but a loss to Canada and a draw with El Salvador on Monday ended the nation's Olympic dreams. Canada and El Salvador advanced to the semifinals from the group.

When El Salvador arrived at the airport, the players received pieces of paper with the American names printed and crossed out, leaving some of the Central Americans feeling as though the planning committee had expected the U.S. team to advance in the tournament.
"The tickets had the names of the American players on them. They literally had to cross out the names with a pencil and write our names on top," said El Salvador midfielder Andrés Flores.

He added: "They thought the USA would go through [to the next round]. This is very disrespectful towards us."

FIFA rule clubs must release players
March 30, 2012
Soccernet.com.

Clubs will be obliged to release Under-23 players for the Olympic football tournament in London this summer, FIFA have ruled.

A hardline statement was issued by football's world governing body on Friday afternoon, despite Barcelona having won a court ruling in 2008 against being obliged to release Lionel Messi for the Beijing tournament.

It means that FIFA will not leave a decision to clubs; for example for Arsenal to decide whether Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey can play for the British team.

A FIFA statement read: "The executive decided that the release of the U-23 players by clubs for Olympic football tournaments will be compulsory."

The Court of Arbitration of Sport found in favour of Barcelona in 2008 on the grounds that the Olympic tournament is not on the international match calendar, but the club still allowed Messi to play and he went on to win a gold medal.

It is understood that FIFA believe the ruling went against them because they did not make it clear early enough that release of the players was compulsory.

The Football Association have assured clubs that Team GB coach Stuart Pearce will not select any player for the British men's team if they have been in the England squad for Euro 2012.

Each men's squad is made up of Under-23 players plus three over-age players.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Ryan Giggs captain of Team GB

Stuart Pearce described picking Ryan Giggs as his captain for the Team GB Olympic football team as "a no-brainer", and it is hard to disagree. Once it was confirmed that David Beckham would not be in the squad, there was only ever one real candidate.

Considering that he is the most decorated player in the history of English football, it is odd to think that Giggs is actually a novice when it comes to playing in a tournament like the Olympic one. Having never reached a major international finals with Wales, Giggs has never experienced a campaign of three group games and then a knockout phase all crammed into a couple of weeks.

Despite that, his vast experience amassed across more than two decades of playing the game as a professional will be of great use, both for him and for the group of young team-mates he will be skippering for the summer.

That experience is likely to be called upon sooner rather than later, specifically when Team GB play their warm-up game against Brazil in Middlesbrough.

Brazil are one of the tournament favourites, who have a history of taking their Olympic football very seriously. Their four strikers for London are Neymar, Hulk, Pato and Leandro Damiao, a line-up most senior national team coaches would kill for.

Uruguay, Argentina and Spain will also bring squads brimming with well-known stars to the Games, with Spain even including players who have only just come home from Euro 2012.

As such, the British team will do well to avoid a heavy defeat against Brazil, especially as it will be their first proper match together. If I'm honest, I would question the wisdom of booking such a match, which is less of a warm-up and more of a baptism of fire. Psychologically it could do more harm than good.

Giggs will have to be a real leader for his young team, both on and off the pitch. From watching England play this summer, we can probably assume the Team GB are not going to see as much of the ball as many of their opponents, so when they do have Giggs needs to be an assured and effective presence in possession. Without it, he must make sure that everyone sticks to their jobs and maintain their composure.

Should they lose against Brazil, that is when Giggs's leadership will truly be called upon. For all his success in the game, he has experienced his fair share of disappointments, too, and will need to be able to lift the players' spirits when they face adversity.

I don't think he will be a big dressing-room shouter of a captain, but I do think people will be surprised at how vocal he will be with the other players when things aren't being done the way he wants. Even at an early age at United, he would not be afraid to share his thoughts if he received a poor pass or things weren't going right.

He may be venturing into the unknown as much as the rest of Team GB, but Giggs's leadership will be vital if they are to represent Britain well at the Olympics and prove the sceptics wrong.

FS,
I find lots of Brits, especially the Scots, NIrish and to a lesser extent the Welsh, don't want to have anything to do with the GB Olimpic team. They are suspicious of FIFA. They feel Blatter and co. will force the Brits to have one team for WC. The Scots kind of threaten their players not to play. But other say that there is not scotsman or N irish good enough to make the the team. The Welsh players told their FA to buzz off.  There are Brits who feel that they should drop football from the Olimpics(tooo much ale ?). It seems that they fail to realize that football was in in the 3rd or 4th football Olimpiad. And the Olimpic champion before the advent of the WC in 1930 was the de facto World Champions. And in most Olimpics they get the most spectators, hence the most money. Ask the IOC about the turnout for  the LA and Atlanta football tournaments.
Congrats to Giggsy. I feel it for Becks though. But Pearce is taking this seriously. He wants no Becks bandwagonists telling him what to do, etc., I guess.

Also Uraguay were the 1934 and 1928 Olimpic champions. They have pedigree.

UAE startin' to frustrate people (me) playin' typical frustration football....they knockin' de ball well but still tryin' to knock it through Uruguay 18 when they have 9 men behind de ball.  They gettin' decent looks at the goal from 20-25 yards out and refuse to pull de damned trigger and then some defender is going to come along and try a shot from 40 yards out.....with a man RIGHT in front of him to block it.  Allyuh chupid ah wha?! :banginghead:

They coulda had more than an equalizer, they coulda scored a a couple goals early and taken better control of the game.  These African fellas need to learn to be a little more disciplined and ruthless with the ball and stop playin' around so much.  Sometimes they just try to be too cheeky and stylish with the ball and it causes too many of their plays to break down.
