T&T scores 6-1 win over Clarema United in final training match.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago's Under 23 footballers closed their four-match Training camp in Fort Lauderdale with a convincing 6-1 victory over local club Clarema United at the Lockhart Stadium training pitch on Sunday afternoon.

Following back to back losses to Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Canada, Angus Eve's men gave a polished performance against Clarema, coached by ex-Jamaican international Desmond Smith.

US-based midfielder Sean De Silva, after joining the camp on Saturday night, made an immediate impression, notching a pair of goals (30th and 40th) and setting up another in the 44th for Columbus Crew midfielder Kevan George. He also had a free kick hitting the crossbar.

T&T's other goals came from Jamal Gay (24th) and second half substitutes Cordell Cato (75th) and Shahdon Winchester five minutes from full time.

After enjoying the better of the early exchanges, T&T for the fifth successive match conceded first when Akeeba Marshall's low effort was deflected past goalkeeper Andre Marchan in the 24th minute.

It didn't take long for Eve's men to respond as two minutes Joevin Jones smartly held two men off before playing one through for Gay and the Caledonia AIA forward slotted past the Clarema goalkeeper.

And then four minutes later, De Silva made a run on the left of the box and cut back on to his left before unleashing a shot into the right corner to put T&T 2-1 ahead.

The go ahead goal spurred T&T on further with De Silva again involved. The College of Charleston player collected wide from Jones and was fouled just outside the box. De Silva then curled one on the near post for George to stab home from close range.

T&T continued to dominate as they surged forward and punished Clarema again just before the break. Micah Lewis’ penetrative run led to him whipping a ball over for De Silva to comfortably hit home on an open far post.

Eve reverted to almost his entire regular start team after resting them in the 1-0 loss to Canada and it seemed to have paid off. And with a healthy lead at half time he opted to put on Winchester and Cato as well as Jomal Williams, Kareem Moses, Marcus Joseph and Trevin Caesar in the second half.

Cato’s burst of speed was again evident and he put his name on the scoresheet when he took on three defenders before directing a right footer into the net from just outside the box with Winchester lurking inside the area. But the W Connection striker was not to be left out as soon after he met a through ball and took his time before pushing the ball pa st the Clarema goalkeeper in the 85th minute.

Eve is set to announce his final 20-man squad on Monday prior to the team’s departure to California on Wednesday. He will continue the camp with training session for the remainder of the camp in Fort Lauderdale.

“I think it was a really good way to finish the training matches. The team didn’t give us a bad run by any means but we worked on a couple things and the players applied themselves well today,” Eve told TTFF Media after the match which was the second win in four games in Fort Lauderdale after an opening 4-1 victory over Honduras 5 Stars last Sunday.

“We still have a couple things to polish up on and we’ll be working on this over the next couple days before we head over to LA. But I was happy with our finishing today and the aggression as well. Now it’s that time where it’s the difficult part where the final team has to be named and some players have to be left out.

They are all part of the squad but unfortunately we can’t pick everyone to go into the tournament.  From here into the tournament the focus will be on our three matches with no other distractions whatsoever,” Eve ended.

Well, I must say this performance, even against limited opposition was excellent.

The absent midfield was suddenly present.  The introduction of Sean De Silva was certainly a game changer.

Clarema United players and supporters were all asking about eh "white boy," who was "wicked on the left foot or the right foot!"

Again, Jamal Gay was difficult to handle as was Cato with his speed.  Our defense was much, much better today, we held shape and played like a team on a mission.

The comments from the Clarema United players and supporters were encouraging as was the play of the T&T U 23's.

I know that there is some criticism of Coach Eve's decision to play fringe players, but if he is to be faulted is for bringing too many payers to have look at...he cannot bring them and then not give them a chance to play!!!

That said it seems pretty obvious that there will be few changes to the team we have all seen already!

Even though we lost to Canada with some sloppy play, there were glimpses of what this team could accomplish.

Canada is a decent team, but so is T&T...I can honestly say, after watching Canada play this evening that they are not better than we are.

We have a big team, physically imposing, twin towers in the center back, nippy forwards and with Molino and Sean De Silva in mid field to cause headaches.

Cato has some deft touches and real speed, Kevan George is looking decent, I am impressed with Cyrus and his penchant for forays up field.

This performance was very polished and we looked a National Team!!!  Again I concede this was not world class opposition, but we did the job today and we did it with pure aggression.

I spoke to Stephen Hart this afternoon.  He thought we had a decent team and found them to be physically imposing.

Canada lost their game today to Ft Lauderdale Kickers 1-0.

Canada went close several times though...Kickers had one shot on goal...and they scored...lol

it was a game to give the players a warm up, and the team did what they are supposed to do against such teams.

The goal that was scored against us a a real lucky flukes ting.

The coach cancelled the game against Barry to protect the players against rough play days before the final cut and tourney.

The team dispatched the opposition with impunity just as expected.

The senior team had ample opportunities to do jes so against Guyana and failed, and to be truthful Guyana should be regarded in the same manner as Caremba is regarded.

De Silva really bring a little something extra to the team in this one, but we really have to work on the situation of conceding goals because we cant be just hoping that we score more than we concede
