Defender Jelani Peters signed to one-year deal with Pittsburgh Riverhounds
By Riverhounds Staff

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC has signed defender Jelani Peters to a one-year deal for the 2021 season with a club option for 2022, pending USL Championship and USSF approval.

Peters, 27, is a 6-foot-4 center back and native of Trinidad and Tobago who has been with the Hounds since the beginning of preseason as a trialist, earning a roster spot after starting in four of the five preseason matches to date.

“Jelani is an athletic defender who is good in the air and strong in the tackle. He continues to get more comfortable in our system and should be a sold piece for us moving forward during the 2021 season,” Riverhounds head coach Bob Lilley said.

Peters began his career with St. Ann’s Rangers and W Connection in the TT Pro League in his home country, a tenure that included making four starts in the CONCACAF Champions League with W Connection in 2016.

In 2017, he was loaned to Toronto FC II, then in the USL Championship, which would later sign him to a permanent deal. He played for the club through the 2019 season in USL League One, but Toronto FC II did not compete in the 2020 USL season due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Peters also received a call-up to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team in 2016 during qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. He was on the bench for matches against Costa Rica and Honduras in the final qualifying round but has yet to make his international debut.

Jelani Peters poised for first international appearance at Gold Cup
By Riverhounds Staff

Riverhounds SC defender Jelani Peters was named to Trinidad & Tobago's final roster for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins Friday with a 12-team qualifying tournament.

Peters, 27, will be in the mix for his first international appearance with the Soca Warriors, who begin the event facing Montserrat at 9:30 p.m. Friday at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The winner of that match will face the winner between Cuba and French Guiana on July 6, with the winner of that match advancing to the 16-team group stage of the Gold Cup.

It is the second time Peters has been called up to his national team, the first coming in November 2016, when he joined the squad for World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras. He was an unused substitute in those matches.

In his first year with the Hounds, Peters in on pace to have his most active season as a professional since that 2016-17 season, when he appeared in 22 matches for Trinidadian club W Connection before being loaned to Toronto FC II. This year, Peters has appeared in seven of the Hounds' first 10 matches with five starts, as he has been a regular part of Bob Lilley's rotation at center back.

Two other Hounds players were included on preliminary Gold Cup rosters but were not selected for their nation's final roster. Fellow Trinidadian Mekeil Williams was left off their final team, while Jordan Dover had to withdraw his name from consideration for Guyana because of injury.

Jelani Peters named to USL Championship Team of the Week
By Riverhounds Staff

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defender Jelani Peters was selected to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 20 of the season, the league announced this afternoon.

Peters is a first-time Team of the Week honoree whose headed goal handed the Hounds a 1-0 win over the visiting New York Red Bulls II last Wednesday. The goal was the first for Peters in USL with either the Hounds or Toronto FC II, his first USL club.

For the week, Peters played all 180 minutes for the Hounds, which includes the New York match and the 1-1 draw Saturday at San Antonio FC. The 6-foot-5 center back recorded 10 clearances, seven interceptions and won 8 of 9 tackles across those two matches.

A native of Diego Martin, Trinidad, Peters this year was called up for the first time to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team, and he appeared for the Soca Warriors in four matches during qualifying and the group stage of the 2021 Gold Cup. With the Hounds, his 813 minutes played is the most he has logged in a USL season.

Peters and the division-leading Riverhounds return home this Saturday, when they will host Loudoun United FC at 7 p.m. at Highmark Stadium. Tickets for the match are available at the Highmark Stadium Box Office or via Ticketmaster.

Jelani Peters features on USL Team of the Week
Riverhounds Staff

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defender Jelani Peters was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 18, announced this afternoon by the league.

Peters was front and center in the Hounds’ 4-1 win Saturday over Miami FC when he recorded his first two-goal game as a professional. The 6-foot-5 center back powered home a header in the 49th minute to give the Hounds a 2-0 lead, and he made no mistake with his feet 12 minutes later, when he put home the team’s third goal from a designed set piece.

Scoring wasn’t the only reason Peters earned his place, as he went a perfect 5-for-5 in aerial duels against Miami, and he added two clearances for a back line that came minutes away from its third consecutive shutout. He also entered the team’s midweek, 1-0 win over Indy Eleven as a late substitute, securing the three points and the clean sheet in a tight match.

Peters was joined in the weekly honors by fellow defender Shane Wiedt, who headed home the fourth goal in the win over Miami. Wiedt was picked for a bench spot after scoring as a substitute against Miami and playing the full 90 in the midweek shutout of Indy.
