Guyana Ruggers demolish T&T 20-0 in SC 2015 RWC Qualifiers

THE Guyanese supporters could not ask for a better result when the home side took to the field and trounced Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso Warriors 20-0 in the final of the South Caribbean Rugby World Cup Qualifiers at the Guyana National Stadium, yesterday. Guyana now await the winner of the North Caribbean Zone between Bermuda and Cayman Islands who will collide in the NC final on June 9.
Captain of the victorious Guyana side, Ryan Gonsalves, stated that the win feels really great especially since they finished with a clean sheet.
He said, “The guys stuck to their plan; we kept controlling the game even though in the first half we were playing more defence than attack; but then we got into the flow and kept possession so when we got the first try we just kept building from that”.
Gonsalves added that his junior players gelled quite well with the senior players and played very responsible roles.
The game saw both teams playing very defensively in the first half even though T&T won ball possession and played most of their game in Guyana’s half.
When the home side claimed possession they got some good runs that were broken down near T&T’s try line. They managed to draw first blood through a try in the 36th minute compliments of Theodore Henry. The try was successfully converted by Gonsalves.
In the second half Guyana’s fitness was the superior aspect which decided the match since the physically larger T&T side struggled to consistently traverse the field.
Claudius Butts showed his experience when he scored a try following a missed penalty by Gonsalves in the 53rd minute. That try was also converted by the captain Gonsalves taking the score to 14–0.
Guyana continued to dominate in every area and got points on the board through penalty kicks in the 64th and 78th minutes from Ryan Hinckson and Gonsalves, respectively.
