Eve hopes U-17s continue training despite tourney suspension.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Former national team captain and current Under-17 men's coach Angus Eve is hoping that measures will be in place for the national youth team to continue on-field training when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions are lifted come June 22.

Eve, 48, the most capped T&T international with 117 appearances, was appointed coach of the national youth team earlier this year to prepare the squad for the Concacaf U-17 Championship which was set to contest in Honduras during August.

However, on Friday last, Concacaf issued a release which said that given the ongoing uncertainty about when football can resume in the region, the confederation had decided to suspend the 2020 Girls’ U-15 and Men’s U-17 Championship qualifiers.

According to the Concacaf release, the thoughts of everyone at the confederation remains with the communities across the region affected by COVID-19.

"The health and welfare of everyone involved in the sport is our priority and we continue to monitor and follow the guidance provided by Governments and public health authorities," the release added.

Concacaf noted that it will continue to discuss with its member associations, FIFA and other stakeholders proposals to reorganise the competitions so that they are well prepared when the sport can safely resume in the future.

Commenting on the decision, Eve who coaches Naparima College in the Secondary Schools Football League as well as T&T Pro League club, Club Sando said the decision taken by Concacaf to suspend the qualifiers was expected and should not stop the team from continuing to prepare.

Eve, who has also coached at the U-20 national level added, "Based on what was happening with football leagues and other competitions in Concacaf due to COVID-19 we knew there was a big possibility that the qualifiers would be pushed back.

"I honestly don't see Concacaf resuming international football until November for the latest with the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be played in Peru next year as well, so the qualifiers could be set for early next year and that's a good reason to continue what we started.

"We were able to get two months of on-field training from the beginning of February until we were told to stop by the T&T Football Association (TTFA) due to the coronavirus, and since then we have managed to keep the programme going by conducting virtual training sessions and have been staying in regular contact with the players as well.

"So we have not stopped working and once we are allowed to resume full-team training I expect all the players will be in good physical shape to do so."

Looking past the restrictions of team sports as well possible clashes with schools football and Youth Pro League, Eve said he will like to see the players resume on-field training as soon as possible.

"Before the Concacaf tournament we have a lot of work to put in and I recently completed a coaching course with the Argentina Football Association where they explained that they normally prepare their youth teams for two-and-a-half years before a tournament.

"I believe this is the way we have to go for us to continually have teams competing in major events. We need to be doing likewise and prepare our teams for nothing less than two years, said Eve.

<Spence uncertain of Under-15 girls' fitness levels>

However, Jason Spence, coach of the U-15 girls' team and former senior women's team assistant under Randy Waldrum said he is uncertain as to what level of fitness his players will return to on-field training when they get the go-ahead to resume.

Speaking via telephone, Spence said, "The U-15 girls' programme began training during the first week in February and like all the other programmes were forced to bring everything to a halt when in mid-March.

"Concacaf did not provide a confirmed date for the girls' competition but we were all working with the idea that the tournament was set for July/August."

While some national age-group teams have been able to continue their program via virtual sessions Spence, a former U-20 women's coach admitted to having some difficulty communicating with his players.

"We have only been able to reach out to some of them via WhatsApp and have sent them programmes to follow so honestly I'm not sure what physical shape they will be in when we do get the green-light to resume training sessions as the girls no doubt to me will have been set-back in their preparations.

Away from the playing field, Spence also pointed out that there is also the added situation with regards to the payment of salaries to the coaching staff.

"As you may know by now we have not been paid for almost three months, and there is some uncertainty as to where the payments will be coming from," said Spence.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Cooper screens home based and US-based U-17 players.
TTFA Media.

Head Coach Shawn Cooper is currently overseeing sessions with Provisional Training Squad of Under 17 home-based and US-based players as preparations continue for next February’s CONCACAF Men’s U-17 Championship in Guatemala.

With the current SSFL Season in progress, sessions have been taking place twice weekly with Cooper and his staff observing scrimmages as they work towards trimming the squad to 35 players.

T&T are in Group F of the Concacaf Championship with USA, Canada and Barbados. Cooper’s Men open against Canada on Saturday February 11th, followed by a meeting with the US on February 13th and Barbados on February 15th.

The 2023 CU17C will begin with a 16-team group stage played between the top ranked participating nations (according to Concacaf’s Men’s U-17 ranking). These nations are (in alphabetical order): Barbados, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Suriname, USA and Trinidad and Tobago.

For the Group Stage, to be played between February 11-16, Groups E and G will be based at the Estadio Nacional Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, while Groups F and H will be hosted by the Estadio Pensativo in Antigua.

After Group Stage play, the top three nations in each group will advance to the knockout stage, joining the four 2022 Concacaf U-17 Men’s Qualifiers (CU17Q) group winners: Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico.

The Round of 16 matches will take place February 18 and 19, at both venues, followed by the Quarterfinals (February 21 and 22), Semifinals (February 24) and Final (February 26) in Guatemala City.

All knockout stage matches will be played in a single match direct elimination format and the four semifinalists will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru 2023.

Residential training camps for U-17s
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 17 Provisional Training squad is currently engaged in a residential training camp at the Home of Football in Couva as preparation continues toward the CONCACAF U-17 Men’s Championship in Guatemala.

Head Coach Shawn Cooper has been running double sessions daily during the ongoing camp which ends tomorrow (Christmas Eve). Another camp will begin on December 29th and run until December 31st at the Couva facility.

Among the players currently in the training squad is Nashville FC forward Tyrell Moore, the younger brother of Shaq Moore who appeared for the US National Team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Both players are the sons of former Trinidad and Tobago player Wendell Moore.

Also in training with Cooper’s squad is English-born midfielder Rio Cardines of Crystal Palace’s Under 18 team. Cardines has appeared for Palace in their last three fixtures against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City in which he scored in a 2-2 draw on November 19th.

Cooper has been impressed by the workrate of the players involved in the current camps.

“We’ve been doing double sessions during the camps and the players have responded positively with some encouraging signs. They have shown that they are willing to go the distance. The players who have come in from overseas have definitely fitted into the program and the style and approach of our set-up as well,” Cooper told TTFA Media.

“We are in a period where we are emphasising on physical conditioning while including other aspects of how we want to play.”

“Generally the home-based players have been competitive because everyone is aware that places are up for grabs and the overseas guys have been pushing for inclusion also. The attitude and approach has been good but we still have other aspects of our overall team preparation that we will be focusing on in the sessions ahead,” Cooper said.

Among the overseas-players who have been involved in the previous training camp are Luka Hislop, son of former Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, Jaden Chan Tack, Joshua Palmer and Samuel Duncan.

T&T opens its campaign against Canada in Group F on February 11th before facing USA on February 13th and Barbados two days later.

The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Wendy's son catches U-17 coach Cooper's eye
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

T&T could soon be represented on the international by another member of former Miss Universe (1998) Wendy Fitzwilliam's family, her son Ailan Andrew Panton.

This after the 16-year-old Panton, her son with former husband, Jamaican senator, David Panton impressed the T&T Under-17 men's football team coaching staff led by Shawn Cooper during the residential training camp at the Home of Football in Balmain, Couva which ends today as preparation continues toward the Concacaf U-17 Men’s Championship in Guatemala in February.

Speaking on the eve of the conclusion of the second stage of the camp which was briefly interrupted on Christmas Eve (Saturday) to allow the players to enjoy Christmas with their families before it resumed on Thursday until today (Saturday, December 31), Cooper said he has been relatively pleased with the players.

"We resumed on Thursday with a double session where we continued to look at a couple of players from the USA in terms of seeing how well they would have adapted to what we are trying to do in terms of our style of play and tactics, and they were pretty okay and also adopted very well to the conditions, especially coming from the very cold weather that is facing the USA at the moment."

"They all adjusted well to what we were doing and it's now up to us as members of the coaching staff to sit and determine which players we will be going with for the tournament.

The T&T coach said it will without a doubt be a difficult task to select his final team, but one that he and his staff embrace.

"My coaching staff and I have a very hard task in selecting a final squad for the tournament not only because of the high competitive level between the players, but also Concacaf has reduced the number of players per team for this age group tournament to 20 players, so where in the past teams would have selected three goalkeepers, we will more than likely have to go with one less, and then it's a hard choice in terms of the rest of the squad in terms of defenders, midfielders, and forwards."

"Only on Thursday night we had four USA-based players left to return to North America and off the top of my head, I would say that Jeremiah Cato, and Tyrell Moore, the latter, the younger brother of Shaq Moore who appeared for the USA at the just concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Both players are the sons of former T&T player Wendell Moore.
"I would also add to those two, the son of former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam, Ailan Andrew Panton who has proven himself to be a very good goalkeeper, and certain to have a bright future in the sport along with Luka Hislop, son of former national goalkeeper Neil ‘Shaka’ Hislop, who is younger.

He added, "Overall, the camp was a very useful one with about 35 players involved in total, with about ten to 12 from overseas, but unfortunately last Thursday close to ten of them were showing signs of flu-like symptoms and as a precaution, we had to send them home to avoid it spreading through the rest of the camp to the other players

Looking ahead to the resumption of school next week and the scheduling of training sessions for the locally based players, Cooper said he plans to ramp up the weekly sessions.

"We are expected to leave for Costa Rica coming closer to the end of January where we will play two international warm-up matches against that country's Under-17 team, but before that, we will basically add more weekly sessions to about four a week. So the guys can expect a schedule of Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays until we depart,

T&T will open its campaign at the Concacaf Under-17 Championship, which serves as a qualifier to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Peru next year against Canada in Group F of the 20-team tournament on February 11, 2023, Men’s Under-17 Championship against at the Estadio Pensativo in Antigua, Guatemala.

The young Soca Warriors then face the USA in the second match on February 13 before closing out their round-robin group campaign against Caribbean rivals Barbados on February 15.

Groups H which is made up of Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador, and Suriname will also be played at the Estadio Pensativo in Antigua while

Group E which comprises defending champion and eight-time winners Mexico, Panama, host Guatemala, and Curacao, and Group G featuring Costa Rica, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, and Cuba will be based at the Estadio Nacional Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City.

After the group stage, the top three nations in each group will advance to the knockout stage, joining the four 2022 Concacaf U-17 Men’s Qualifiers (CU17Q) group winners: Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico.

The round-of-16 matches will take place on February 18, and 19, at both venues, followed by the quarterfinals on February 21, and 22 with the semifinals set for February 24, and the finals on February 26 in Guatemala City.

All knockout stage matches will be played in a single-match direct elimination format and the four semifinalists will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru 2023.

TTFA announces National U-17 match against Footy Fest All Stars, Cooper says “no”
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Under-17 Team have four weeks left to prepare for their opening Concacaf Under-17 Championship match against Canada on 11 February in Guatemala City.

As it turns out, an exhibition match against a Footy Fest All Star Team may no longer be part of those preparations.

Last night, the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFA) informed the public about the match, via its social media pages. The game was scheduled for 6pm at the Police Barracks in St James on Saturday 14 January.

“The best young players in Trinidad and Tobago would be on show,” stated the TTFA promo. “Who are you supporting!?”

However, Wired868 understands the National Under-17 Team technical staff, which is led by head coach Shawn Cooper, scoffed at the fixture and will decline the opportunity.

TTFA acting general secretary Amiel Mohammed, who was initially introduced to the local football body as personal assistant to Normalisation Committee chairman Robert Hadad, is believed to be behind the idea.

The Footy Fest event, which is run by Unveil, is a day-long seven-a-side competition between Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) teams. Although school teams compete, it is an informal arrangement made directly with students who often take part without coaches.

The TTFA’s idea appears to be that after the schoolboys play a half-dozen small-sided Footy Fest games amongst themselves, the organisers would throw together a team on the fly to challenge the National Under-17 Team in an 11-a-side exhibition match.

Arguably, it marked a new low for the TTFA in preparation for a Concacaf tournament—although coach Jason Spence’s National Women’s Under-17 and Under-20 Teams got no practice games whatsoever.

Mohammed, as is customary for TTFA officials during the Hadad-led era, did not respond to a request for comment on the proposed friendly.

Cooper, a veteran of three Concacaf youth competitions, was unimpressed and, according to a source, felt that a game in a fete match environment was not what they wanted right now.

The underlying issue for the current National Under-17 Team appears to be the TTFA’s inability to access and fund proper international friendlies, so as to allow coaches to test players and tactics against challenging opposition in conditions that closer mirror competitive action.

Men’s National Under-20 Team head coach Angus Eve got two friendly matches away to the Costa Rica Under-20s and one against professional Costa Rican club team, Sporting FC, before their Concacaf competition last June.

Ideally, a coach would want two or three testing friendlies before he or she has culled their team and after they arrived at a final squad. But Eve at least got something to work with.

Thus far, according to TTFA statements on the matter, Cooper has not been assured of even the limited exposure afforded to Eve’s troops.

Inadequate preparation apart, the National Under-17 Team is believed to have some worthy talent with local-based players like defender Lyshaun Morris, midfielder Josiah Ochoa and attacker Lindell Sween all catching the eye at scrimmages, alongside overseas-based call-ups such as goalkeeper Ailan Pantor, flanker Rio Cardines and Jeremiah Cateau.

Cooper was unavailable for comment, as he is attending a TTFA ‘A’ License coaching course at present.

Up to the time of publication, the proposed fixture between the National Under-17 Team and the Footy Fest All Star Team remained on the TTFA’s social media pages.

Cooper names U-17 40-man provisional squad.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s U-17 Men’s Team head coach Shawn Cooper has named his provisional 40-man squad for the 2023 Concacaf Men’s U-17 championship scheduled for Guatemala next month.

Cooper has been overseeing preparations of the squad for the past few months and is now focusing on the final leg of the build-up and is expected to name his final team in early February.

“We’re coming to that phase of the preparations where precision matters and whatever we do is based on getting the best possible group of players in the final squad for the tournament,” Cooper told TTFA Media.

“Of course there have been some minor challenges but this is not unexpected and we’ve worked around this so far. The next couple weeks will be critical because we are also awaiting further information on the availability of some of the overseas-based players due to commitments with their teams outside. But the group in training now has been committed, disciplined and driven towards not just making the final cut but also competing when we get to Guatemala. I think the effort given by all the players and staff needs to be commended so far but of course this is just the build-up towards the real thing in a few weeks so have to be switched on throughout,” he added.

T&T opens its campaign against Canada in Group F on February 11th before facing USA on February 13th and Barbados two days later. After Group Stage play, the top three nations in each group will advance to the knockout stage, joining the four 2022 Concacaf U-17 Men’s Qualifiers (CU17Q) group winners: Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico.

Three Academy prospects receive international call-ups

https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/cardines-grante-lameiras-academy-international-call-ups
/

Crystal Palace Under-18s defenders Rio Cardines and Jake Grante have been called up to represent Trinidad and Tobago Under-17s and the Republic of Ireland Under-18s respectively. Palace Under-16s forward Enrique Lameiras has also been called up to represent Portugal Under-16s.

Cardines, who joined Palace at Under-16s last season, has received his first ever call-up to the Trinidad & Tobago Under-17s side. Despite being a winger earlier in his career, he has impressed at full-back for Rob Quinn’s Under-18s side - scoring in the 4-0 thumping of Fulham at Motspur Park.

He will be a part of the Trinidad and Tobago side competing in the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Guatemala, a regional championship where qualification to the FIFA Under-17s World Cup is determined. The full-back will face a tough group against the United States, Canada and Barbados in mid-February and will remain with the squad for the entirety of their run in tournament.

Additionally, centre-back Jake Grante has received a call-up to the Republic of Ireland Under-18s side. This is the first time he has been a part of the Irish Under-18s, having previously been a key feature of the Under-17s side earlier in the season.

Grante has been a mainstay in the Palace Under-18s side, featuring 12 times and keeping four clean sheets. He will join up with Colin O’Brien’s side for two games against Hungary in Pintar, Spain.

Finally, Enrique Lameiras, who was a part of the Crystal Palace Under-15s side which won the U15 Floodlit Cup South last season, will join up with the Portugal Under-16s side as they take part in a UEFA U16 Development Tournament in The Algarve, Portugal.

UEFA launched its Development Tournaments in 2012 as a way of offering elite male and female youth players the opportunity to enjoy intense international matches and learn about overseas travel as part of a squad.

Lameiras’ Portugal side will face the Netherlands, France and Germany in a four-team group mid way through February.

T&T coach Shawn Cooper names strong squad for Concacaf U-17 Champs.
T&T Newsday Reports.

HEAD coach of the T&T men’s Under-17 national Team Shawn Cooper has announced his 20-man squad for the Concacaf Under-17 Championship to be held in Guatemala from February 11 to 26.

Cooper released the roster to the TT Football Association (TTFA) and the media shortly before a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon.

The squad includes five players from the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premiership champions, St Benedict’s College – namely, Lyshaun Morris, Josiah Ochoa, Derrel Garcia and Jeremiah Niles and Malachi Webb.

Three players from the Premiership runners-up Fatima College were also called up. Goalkeeper Jaden Ottley, defender Jaden Williams and striker Michael Chaves will all represent the yellow and blue outfit from the north on the national youth team.

To add some foreign experience to the roster, Cooper included Crystal Palace’s Rio Cardines. The American sextet of Ailan Panton, Samuel Duncan, Jeremiah Cateau, Armani Rowe, Dominic Wilson and Tyrell Moore were also selected. The young Warriors’ coach believes that these players will be key members of his team, not only for the tournament but also for the future.

On papaer, the young Soca Warriors, on paper, face a difficult task at the tournament having been drawn alongside the United States, Canada and Barbados in Group B.

To prepare for the battle ahead, they will play two matches against fellow tournament participants, Jamaica, on February 4 and 7 in Kingston, Jamaica.

In his press briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Cooper stated, “I, alongside the staff, had a very tedious task in selecting these players. But, I think that they are working very hard and they are looking forward to this competition.”

He continued, “Going through the screening, we wanted players who could have added value to us and not (those who are) just equal to some of our (current) guys. I think, going through the process, we realised that there were about five or six players who can add some sort of experience to the young chaps that we have coming out of the SSFL.”

“We also have an under-14 player – Seth Hadid – who came through the screening and we will be taking him to Jamaica. So, the squad (for the Jamaica trip) will not be of 20 (players), but it will be 21. We think his development needs a game or two at the top level because, as far as I see, he’s (a step) above most of the (other) under-14s.”

“I have always thought that, when picking an under-17 team, you must select about three youngsters who will be around for the next under-17 (cycle) for some continuity, and Seth Hadid is one that I think has a bright future and I’m looking for big things from him.”

Cooper also believes that the players he selected, despite having no international experience, are capable of competing at a regional tournament. “They have a lot of potential”, he said, “(I think that) going to Jamaica will prepare them. They will have an idea (of what playing other countries will be like) because, remember, we haven’t played any international games before.”

“Most of them are just playing with their secondary schools. (But) we (do) have a couple of players coming from the US and England who would have a bit more experience. But, because we didn’t have the opportunity to go through the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) qualifying stage, we were barred from giving the boys the chance (of international football) going into this final leg of (the) Concacaf (Championship).”

The two group games against the US and Canada will prove to be the team’s biggest tests. However, Cooper is confident that his Warriors can match the North American juggernauts and deliver results.

He expressed, “We (Trinidad and Tobago) have matched them before. The last time we played the US U-17s back in 2015, we lost 2-0 with Pulisic being one of the scorers. Before that, in 2013, we played Canada and also lost 2-0. So, I think we can match them. They have a lot more experience than us but, on the day, it’s youth football.”

“They (USA and Canada) are carrying professional players (to the tournament); we are carrying schoolboy footballers. But I think the mentality is what needs to change. The boys are taking the advice they are getting and I’m expecting big things from them.”

T&T will open their campaign against Canada on February 11. Addressing the preparation for the maiden fixture, Cooper stated, “Right about now, what we are dealing with is the structure and organisation (of the team). We need to be organised to play against these teams.”

“We don’t want to be leaking goals, so we want to be very strong at the back. Transitioning going forward, we have a lot of guys who were dynamic in the SSFL – guys like (Lindell) Sween, (Josiah) Ochoa and (Michael) Chaves who can put the ball in the back of the net with ease. But what we really want to do is have the team structured properly that can be in the game for long periods.”

The top three teams in each group advance to the Round of 16 knockout stage from 18 February, while the four Concacaf semi-finalists qualify automatically for the Peru 2023 Under-17 World Cup.

St Benedict’s provide spine for T&T U-17s, as Cooper selects final team—plus special role for Seth.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Under-17 Team coach Shawn Cooper is banking on solid defensive organisation, versatility and flashes of dynamism on the ball as he leads the junior Soca Warriors to battle in the 2023 Concacaf Under-17 Championship in Guatemala this month.

Cooper announced a 20-man squad today, which will represent the two-island republic in the Concacaf competition.

The National Under-17 Team comprises 13 local-based schoolboys and seven overseas-based players. Only one, Crystal Palace flanker Rio Cardines, is attached to a top-flight club.

In contrast, the United States roster includes two FC Barcelona youth players (goalkeeper Diego Kochen and midfielder Adrian Gill), two Bundesliga youth defenders (FC Aubsburg’s Noahkai Banks and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Aiden Harangi) and Liverpool FC forward Keyrol Figueroa.

Cooper admits that there is a gulf in terms of experience but he is happy with the ability and attitude of his players.

“They have a lot of potential,” Cooper told the TTFA Media. “[…] The boys are taking the advice on hand and I expect big things from them.”

St Benedict’s College account for a quarter of the final National Under-17 Team roster with defender Lyshaun Morris, midfielder Jeremiah Ochoa, flankers Jeremiah Niles and Darrel Garcia, and attacker Malachi Webb all booked for the Concacaf adventure.

Fatima College, the focus of much debate after the school had over a dozen players on the long-list, ended up with three players on Cooper’s 20-man squad: goalkeeper Jaden Ottley, defender Jaden Williams, and attacker Michael Chaves.

San Juan North Secondary contributed just one player, versatile attacker Lindell Sween. Yet, Cooper hinted that Sween could be one of their stars in the making, and much is expected of him if the young Warriors are to have an impact.

Ochoa and Chaves are understood to be in fine form as well, alongside Presentation College (San Fernando) flanker Vaughn Clement.

Cooper also commended the team’s overseas-based additions for what they brought to the table.

“We wanted players who could add value and not just be equal to our guys,” said Cooper.

Darlington Soccer Academy goalkeeper Ailan Panton, the son of former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam, certainly ticks that box, while Cardines, Concorde Fire midfielder Jeremiah Cateau and Charlotte FC left back Samuel Duncan are also expected to play prominent roles in Guatemala.

Duncan is the son of former national youth team midfielder and Signal Hill Comprehensive standout Jason Duncan.

Incidentally, Cardines is still awaiting his Trinidad and Tobago passport. Wired868 understands that the Ministry of National Security still has to give clearance for the talented teenager to wear the national kit at the upcoming competition.

The National Under-17s leave for Jamaica on Friday for warm-up matches against the young Reggae Boyz on Saturday 4 and Tuesday 7 February in Kingston. They will then head to Guatemala on 9 February, just two days before their tournament opener against Canada.

Their late arrival in Guatemala is by design, as Cooper looks for a way to minimize the impact of playing at altitude—the Estadio Pensativo in Antigua Guatemala is 5,069 feet above sea level.

The medical wisdom is that sport teams can acclimatize to altitude by getting to the venue two weeks before the competition; or, conversely, by landing less than 48 hours before your first competitive exercise so your body does not realize what’s happening yet.

Incidentally, Trinidad and Tobago will travel with 21 players to Jamaica. Cooper convinced the Normalisation Committee on the importance of having 14-year-old midfielder Seth Hadeed involved in those matches at least.

Hadeed, a left-footed attacking midfielder, is so young that Trinidad and Tobago would have needed special permission from Concacaf to use him alongside 17-year-olds in Guatemala.

It is some testimony to his precocious ability that he made it this far and, even as Cooper prepares for a testing competition, he still made space on their flight so that Hadeed could make his international debut. He will serve as standby in case anyone is hurt before the Concacaf tournament.

“Seth has a bright future,” said Cooper. “He has developed very quickly and I am looking for big things from him for the future.

“[…] We think his development could do with a game or two at this level because as far as I can see he is above most of the under-14s. So I had a word with (National Under-15 Team coach) Densill Theobald and I told him we need to carry him [to Jamaica].”

In the end though, facing a physically grueling competition with three group stage matches in just five days, Cooper put a premium on versatility—with players capable of filling in at multiple roles having an edge.

As teams are only allowed 20 players, a questionable Concacaf ruling magnified by the frequency of the matches, it is important that coaches can replace any player at a moment’s notice.

“I will have to utilise the entire squad,” said Cooper, who also explained that physical recovery between games will be key to their plans. “[…] The next day, you may try to have a session early in the morning […] and then you have your entire day to recover.

“One problem we had before with that is having training fields available in the morning. When you are in a group with big teams, they get preference in the booking of fields around the area where you want to train.”

Wired868 understands that the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has not yet booked training fields for the national youth team in Guatemala.

Although Concacaf does not permit teams to register more than 20 players for the youth competition, teams can make changes due to injuries. The United States announced a 23-man squad to travel to Guatemala.

The Trinidad and Tobago contingent, in contrast, may not be able to even get their entire staff at the same hotel—much less, be able to travel with additional players. It is one of several handicaps facing the young Warriors.

In Trinidad and Tobago, most youth players are active for between four to seven months. In developed football nations, youth leagues generally run for 10 months.

Cooper will soon discover how much his training sessions were able to bridge that gap, as they try to keep pace with the likes of Canada and the United States.

“We need to be organized to play against these teams,” said Cooper, who is also the head coach of Presentation (San Fernando). “We want to be stronger in the back and I think we have some guys who are very dynamic in transition, like Sween and Ochoa and Chaves.

“But what we really want to do is have the team structured properly, so we can be in the game for long periods.”

Trinidad and Tobago play their opening Group F fixture against Canada on 11 February, before tackling USA and Barbados on 13 and 15 February respectively.

The top three teams in each group advance to the Round of 16 knockout stage from 18 February, while the four Concacaf semi-finalists qualify automatically for the Peru 2022 Under-17 World Cup.

Jamaica U-17 coach welcomes T&T test

Speaking in the Jamaica Gleaner, Jamaica national Under-17 coach Merron Gordon is confident his 20 players selected to make the trip to Guatemala can take Jamaica to the U-17 World Cup for the third time in the country’s history and has welcomed the two warm-up matches against T&T.

Gordon said the squad is focused on going into the championships to top their group, which includes Costa Rica, Cuba, and Guadeloupe, and then try to take one of the top four spots to book their place in Peru.

“We are very confident in the team selected. This is what we have to work with now. We are confident that the 20 boys we have chosen can really go ahead and put on a good showing that will push us across the line to make it to Peru."

After a month of intense training and assessment, Gordon said the team is close to where the coaching staff desires, and that their two upcoming friendly games against T&T will provide even more data for their assessment.

“We have played against adults (Premier League teams). That really extended the boys. We saw some really good things. We saw some things we definitely need to work on. But little by little, we are fixing them and we got some good results.

“The team is growing day by day and hopefully we will see them against their age group this weekend. This will be a real test. They really did well against the Premier League teams. So this weekend will be a very good test for us against T&T,” said Gordon.

The team will be without their leader in defence, Javin Williams, who is out injured, but Gordon contends that they have adequate replacements.

“Even though we will miss Javin, we had a huge squad just in case we have things like this. We will have competent replacements,” said Gordon.

According to Gordon, the real work needs to take place at the other end of the pitch.

“We are creating chances. It is just to put some away and we are really sharpening up the boys," said Gordon.

Jamaica U-17 Squad:

Tawayne Lynch (goalkeeper), Joshua Grant (goalkeeper), Ahir Dixon, Alexavier Gooden, Malik Robinson, Adrian Reid, Malachi Molina, Nashon Bolt Barrett, Brandon Bent, Ronaldo Barrett, Jason Whyte, Jahmani Bell, Orane Watson, Dyllan John, Dusting Cohen, Nicholas Simmonds, Adrian Mahoney, Ashton Gordon, Everald Swaby, Jordan Mongatal.

Jamaica Gleaner Reports (Daniel.Wheeler).

DESPITE A few nervous moments at the end, National Under-17 head coach Merron Gordon feels his team hit their marks in their 1-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in the first of two international friendlies yesterday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Orane Watson got the winner in the 77th minute as they fine-tuned their preparations for the Concacaf Under-17 Championships, which begin on February 11.

Gordon hoped to see a strong defensive identity with this unit, having had them in camp for more than a month. He said he was satisfied with what the boys displayed throughout.

“I think, had we scored that penalty, it would have been much easier. But I am proud of the boys. This is the first time they are playing against their age group. We are just going to tighten up things and move on,” Gordon said.

The missed penalty in question came in the first half when Jahmani Bell was taken down in the box in the 11th minute. However, Nicholas Simmonds could not convert from the spot, dragging his shot wide, having sent the T&T ‘keeper the wrong way.

Bell caused various problems for the Trinidadian defence, cutting inside a minute later before seeing his shot sail over.

While Jamaica’s press caused problems for the young Soca Warriors, the hosts were not able to make that pressure count in the final third.

Watson was introduced for Simmonds in the second half and he came close to giving the Young Reggae Boyz the lead, as he had a header hit the post and, in the middle of the second half, opted to take a shot that was tame and straight to Trinidadian goalkeeper Ailian Panton.

But Watson would be rewarded for his enterprise in the 77th minute when he was sent through and finished calmly past Panton.

“I think, defensively we were good, but in the latter stages of the game we sat back too far. But playing with your home crowd, you wanted to hold on to the win,” Gordon assessed.

LACKED EXPERIENCE

T&T head coach Shawn Cooper said his team lacked experience but hoped Crystal Palace Academy player, Rio Cardines, who didn’t feature in the game, provides some of that for the team when he is available.

“Some of the guys have never played at this level before. We still have two outstanding players who have yet to arrive in Jamaica, who would have made a difference in the team,” Cooper said.

“The winning goal came from a tactical error from our left midfielder, but I think it was a decent performance from us.”

The game also had a penalty shootout, which Jamaica won 4-2, something Gordon said was important to practise heading into what is effectively a World Cup qualifier. The top-four teams from the Concacaf Under-17 Championships make it to the next Under-17 World Cup.

The second game of the series will take place at St Elizabeth Technical High School at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

It appears the tnt u17 seems very talented. I believe they need to play more games together. I am not seeing the holding midfielders controlling the pace of the game. They are disjointed on the field.
