Young Warriors face El Salvador for quarter-final spot
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday).

THE Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 boys football team will try to upset El Salvador in the round of 16 of the Concacaf Under-17 Championships, at the Estadio Pensativo, in Guatemala on Sunday at 9 pm TT time.

T&T qualified for the knock-out stage after finishing third in Group B with one point after getting one draw and two losses. T&T sealed their place in the knock-out phase after playing to a 1-1 draw against Barbados in the final round of the group phase. An 82nd-minute equaliser from Lindell Sween was enough to see T&T qualify for the next round.

Before the match against El Salvador, T&T lost 3-2 Canada and fell 3-1 to the US.

The T&T defence will have a challenge keeping the El Salvador attackers at bay as the Central Americans scored eight goals in group play.

El Salvador finished second in Group D after ending the preliminary stage with a crushing 4-0 win over Suriname. In earlier matches, El Salvador lost 4-1 to Honduras and defeated Haiti 3-1.

Coach Shawn Cooper said: “We want to play in transition and use the speed of our wingers in the transition—we want to stretch them,” he said. “The Central American teams don’t like you in their face and they don’t like you to run at them. They play a lot with their bodies when they don’t have the ball and try to foul you early, so you can’t use your foot speed.

“We are expecting that and we are trying to prepare our boys for that.”

Fats, he did make some mistakes, but he saved us embarrassment. With the exception of B’dos, the other teams were dominating us. Like 80/20 ball possession. You should look at premier league and see similar error by well paid keepers.

Najjar: Is it “about attitude”? T&T U-17s did well but lacked ability and application.
Wired868.com.

“[…] That the USA and Canada did not steamroll the young Warriors showed we possessed that fighting for all-the-marbles, attitude… But truly, is it only ‘about attitude’?

“We showed the right attitude in all four games but did not win a single game—not even against Barbados whose only goal was against Trinidad and Tobago… The young Soca Warriors and other failed teams appear to be lacking in Ability and Application…”

The following guest column on Trinidad and Tobago’s showing at the 2023 Concacaf Under-17 Championship was submitted to Wired868 by former national senior team and youth team coach Dr Hannibal Najjar:

The 2023 Under-17 Concacaf Tournament just wrapped up in Guatemala. From four games, Trinidad and Tobago returned with zero wins, three losses and one draw against Barbados.

While “it’s about attitude”, as stated by coach Shawn Cooper—and this truly showed to be the case with our young stars—it is truly never only the case in the larger scheme of things. Attitude by itself cannot stand alone. It cannot be all that is required to be a winner or a champion.

The young Soca Warriors demonstrated a resolve to prove that they were not to be counted out. That was very evident and the score lines in all four games reflected this: 1-3 to USA, 2-3 to Canada, 1-1 to Barbados in their Group B encounters; and 2-3 to El Salvador in the knockout stage.

That the USA and Canada did not steamroll the young Warriors showed we possessed that fighting for all-the-marbles, attitude. Cooper called it right.

But truly, is it only “about attitude”? We showed the right attitude in all four games but did not win a single game—not even against Barbados whose only goal was against Trinidad and Tobago.

Though vitally important, we must never overplay chest-thumping antics, self-talk, or sensationalise visualisation and mental rehearsal techniques. For example, the USA went to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with their expensive pre-tournament TV advertisement and mantra: “We Believe”.

They thought that fervent belief would round out what was needed to win the World Cup—the most revered title in all of sport.

However, USA are one of three nations hosting the 2026 World Cup and, at home, maybe they could get further than the Round of 16.

“Attitude is everything” or, “It’s about attitude”, is a great start to begin training and preparing for everything that is challenging. As a coach-learner I firmly believe in the 5 A’s.

We do begin with Attitude. It is the foundation of sturdy and successful structures. It is healthy and pushes to and pulls from one’s vision.

Then comes Awareness (Game IQ). One always needs to be attuned and stay astute to all surrounding and potentially impacting elements and play.

Third is, Ability. We all know exactly what that means: “Horses for courses”, and rides for surfaces. We take each player’s natural ability and their skills for executing the tasks before them and harness and develop them to their highest levels.

Our fourth ‘A’ is Application. Knowing what to do when, and where—which pass, shot, trap, run, etc, to execute. It requires quality techniques, tactical functionality, and strategic understanding.

The fifth and final ‘A’ is Appreciation. Do we have an appreciative spirit for the game, the officials, our teammates, coaching staff, the spectators, families, our country and all of its contributions spent towards your holistic development? Do we show humbleness in a win or loss that was undeserving? Do we appreciate our Creator in all of this?

Pele did and so did Messi. They lead the world in all 5 A’s. I marvel at their flow and glow as they “played” with this set of “skills and abilities”—symptomatic of all successful leaders regardless of endeavor.

Trinidad and Tobago and other failed teams appear to be lacking in Ability and Application. All teams that did not advance beyond the group stage had a minus goal difference. And only two teams—Group C’s Cuba -2 (6 goals scored and 8 conceded) and Group B’s Trinidad and Tobago -3 (4 goals scored and 7 conceded)—advanced despite conceding more than they scored.

Despite the final score lines and trailing in all areas of their games except against Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago showed a great deal of “class”—as, in the past, we generally would lose by wider margins.

As Cooper stated: “we are starting with SSFL school boys coming up against professional teenagers.”

True too were his implied comments on the critical importance of nutrition, rest and relaxation, and the science of the Beautiful Game.

The SSFL is truly our only bona fide youth program alongside those players involved in club football. The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), run by the Fifa-appointed Normalisation Committee, should take notice.

We need sustainable training of ALL aspects of the game but especially Ability and Application. We need this now and fast, given the successes of this tournament. We need to build on it immediately.

Recruiting and retention, along with a comprehensive holistic development plan (which is available, though not fully completed) are the keys to this growth. Sustainable rollover planning is the only option. All areas from the TTFA, business, government and the media must be selfless in their resolve, if we are to reap the benefits and continuously compete in the future.

I have known Shawn Cooper for a very long time. We know each other well. I know that he’d welcome these comments just as we did share as coach and player.

Shawn is a formidable coach, and his growth continues—his style, humble demeanor, and results show this. But there is a lot still to do and it must be done with no break in programming.

Shawn, I hope you persevere and marshal the troops to and through the under-20 phase. Our goal should always be to make better that which is given to us, whether people or project.

We have tremendous potential in this group and considering those that were on the fringes, as Cooper had to fast-track his selections. But those that especially caught the eye included Derrel Garcia, Lindell Sween, Rio Cardines, Jaden Williams, and Ailon Panton.

To the players, I add this self-drawn message designed only for the True Champion, and hope it sustains your efforts: he is “one who gets up when lame; one who shares the fame; and one who always takes the blame” (hn ’94).

But this only comes at the end of thorough preparation.

Well done, Shawn Cooper and the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 Team! Proud we are—and reread the 5 A’s.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Moreover, predominantly the ppl who castigate goalkeepers for being beaten "near post" are largely non-goalkeepers.

There are two posts in football and being beaten at either is conceivable, although one is traditionally more highly condemned than the other.

The reality is that some goals conceded "near post" are just solid/legit goals. Keepers might be harsher on themselves for it, but some goals in those areas are just damn difficult to prevent, stop, redirect, react to etc.

T&T U-17s for Jamaica camp, friendlies
T&T Express

This country’s Men’s Under-17 national football team will travel to Jamaica from May 1-8, for a residential training camp inclusive of three friendly matches versus Jamaica’s U-17s and a club side.

The current T&T U-17 selection features several players who have graduated from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association High Performance Programme and competed at the CONCACAF Boys Under-15 Championship in the Dominican Republic last August, recording memorable wins against Costa Rica and Qatar.

The team, which has been under the guidance of Shawn Cooper since 2023, was initially undergoing preparations for the CONCACAF Men’s U-17 Qualifiers, first slated to be held in August 2024. However, on April 18, CONCACAF issued a circular advising that the Qualifying matches for the FIFA Under-17 Men’s World Cup was now moved from 2024 to 2025.

This therefore meant that there would be additional time for preparations for the CONCACAF U-17 Championship.

A release yesterday stated that the TTFA felt it would be best to provide opportunities for the national team to face international opposition and further dates for camps and talent identification are continuing to be identified for the rest of 2024 ahead of the qualifiers in 2025.

While in Jamaica, the U-17 boys will play Jamaica on Friday and Sunday before concluding their trip with a friendly versus a club team next week Tuesday.

This initiative is in line with the TTFA’s application to the FIFA Talent Development Scheme which aims to provide additional resources to member associations for the elite youth national teams.

TTFA President Kieron Edwards insisted that there will be continuous efforts to provide opportunities for exposure and match preparation for the various national teams.

“In keeping with the executive’s mantra to strengthen partnerships and our relationship with our brothers in CFU, we are pleased to be embarking on this journey to Jamaica,” said Edwards.

“Despite the challenges, the commitment to the continued development of our high-performance programme shines through. This trip marks a pivotal step towards our U-17 team’s quest to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2025. It’s a testament to the dedication of all involved, securing this opportunity mere days after the new executive’s installation.”

T&T U-17 Squad

Defenders: Jimally Renne (Presentation College, San Fernando), Jaydon Caprietta, Jeremiah Daniel, Antonio Hills (all Naparima College), Dimitre Jones, Keston Richards (both Arima North Secondary), Salim Soanes (St Benedict’s College)

Our Under 17 did a very good job to come away with a drawn series, first beating Jam.in the first match and losing the second 2-1,those results were not expected by our schlloboys, compare them to Jamaica's heavyweights with 8 foreign players.I hope this is a sign of good things to come,Bravo! :)

Cooper content with drawn series...T&T U-17s lose 2nd Jamaica friendly
T&T Express

HEAD coach of the Trinidad and Tobago men’s national Under-17 team Shawn Cooper said his team will leave Jamaica with their heads high despite losing 2-1 in the second of two friendly internationals against the young Reggae Boyz at the JFF Technical Centre on the UWI Mona campus, yesterday.

Having won the first game 1-0 last week, Cooper said his players had the same approach yesterday, however, the scoreline went in favour of the hosts.

T&T went ahead in the 15th minute through Salim Soanes before Orel Miller brought the scores level in the 38th. Jahmari Nolan hit the winning goal in the 61st for Jamaica. T&T won the first of the two friendly internationals 1-0 on Friday, with former St Benedict’s College flanker Akel Vesprey scoring in the 90th minute.

Both teams are preparing for their 2025 CONCACAF Men’s Under 17 World Cup qualifying matches. After the match, Cooper said: “Coming out here with a 1-1 in the series is very good for us. For this group to get this sort of result...it wasn’t just a 2-1 victory, it was a hard-fought 2-1 result...We think we came out on top here today,” the T&T coach said.

Reflecting on the game, Cooper said two errors at the back cost his side. Cooper explained that they had to make do with a “makeshift” back-line and that “the communication wasn’t there.” “They went through with a run and this is what they were trying to do all game but when we had the first-choice back five, they dealt with it,” he said

“Most of our boys were playing on Astro Turf for the first time and playing at nine o’clock is difficult and telling on your legs and we picked up a couple of injuries but the game was played at a terrific pace, so it would have had a toll on the boys,” Cooper continued.

“They wanted to win to level the series. For me, leaving here one-all in the series, I think I am on top. We took the first rubber. They had to come hard to equalise, so we are leaving Jamaica with our heads held high,” the T&T coach said added.

In terms of the importance of the series, Cooper said: “It is always beneficial in playing Jamaica. “This game was played like a proper international game and not like a training game or a friendly. Some of our guys saw what it takes to play at the international level and it is all well for their development.”

The T&T coach added: “We are hoping to go foreign and see what guys we have that can fill in. We have a number of guys at Inter Miami who played against Olympic Lyon last night, so we have about three of them. We are looking to broaden our horizons so that when we go back to Trinidad, with the exposure these guys have, it will only do well for us in going forward.”
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

@Trini_2026... I believe Sean Cooper is still the U17 coach. And most likely his U15 team from 2022 will make up the majority of this U17 team. Was 99% local though so scouting still to be done
