Three Caribbean winners at NCAA NCAA Outdoor Championships?
Created on Tuesday, 05 June 2012 16:40 | Written by By Vijay, fosteraa@ymail.com | Print | Email

DES MOINES, USA - Caribbean athletes are not strongly favoured to win many events at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships, starting Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
As a matter of fact, only Cayman Islands' Kemar Hyman and Jamaicans Andrew Riley and Chad Wright were picked by track and field news as potential champions.

And even though the Caribbean flags according to track & field news predictions, will not fly high, very few will also be crowned all-americans.

Hyman, who lowered the Cayman Islands record to 10.07 at ACC Outdoor Championships this season, is tipped for the 100m title ahead of his Florida State teammate Maurice Mitchell.

In the men's 110m hurdles, Riley of Illinois is favoured over LSU's Barrett Nugent and Devon Hill of Miami. Wayne Davis of Texas A&M who recently set a new trinidad & Tobago record is listed to finish 5th while Barbadian Shane Brathwaite of Texas Tech and Jamaican Keiron Stewart of Texas are 8th and 9th.

Wright, in the discus, is expected to get the better of Luke Byrant of Okahoma and Tyler Hitchler of Nebraska.

Jamaican Demar Forbes who is down to represent LSU, is third in the men's long jump

On the women's side, Trinidad & Tobago's Semoy Hackett (LSU), at #3 and #5 for the 200m and 100m respecively is the best placed Caribbean female on the prediction list.

Another Trinidad & Tobago athlete Annie Alexander (Tennessee) is third in the discus throw
.

Jody-Ann Muir of Mississippi Sate is listed at 8th in the 400m, while her former Wolmer's and Jamaica junior teamate Danielle Dowie is 6th on the 400m hurdles list.
Jamaican Francine Simpson is 6th for the women's long jump.

Deon Lendore was not mentioned in the article, but he is definitely one to look out for. He has a firecracker of a semi-final later on today.

Lendore gets in by the skin of his pants, but to make the final as a freshman is a very good accomplishment.

Lendore was on pace to run sub 45. He did not finish strong. He backed down towards the end of the race. He will have to run sub 45 if he expects to medal.

Lendore is running well the only Fr in the final.... speaks volumes. Definitely can run sub 45 and maybe our best 400 man this year.

Our women's sprinting is getting deeper KAB 10.86, SH 11.10, MLA 11.19, KS 11.21, RT 11.30. Our relay team can really make 42 flat!
How did Semoy look in her heat? I really want her to make top 3 in that final- to think she could have been where Kimberlyn Duncan is now possibly faster hmmm. Hopefully she'll peak for the Olympics and run a PB at trials.

Check out last years stats and this years:

2011
Womens 100m

11.43     Kai Selvon    TRI
11.17      Semoy Hackett
10.90      Kelly-Ann Baptiste
11.20      Michelle-Lee Ahye

2012

11.21      Kai Selvon    TRI
11.10      Semoy Hackett
10.86      Kelly-Ann Baptiste
11.19      Michelle-Lee Ahye
11.30      Reyare Thomas

I think its safe to say that we should get low 42s or even better. No way Ukraine should catch us now.

SH looked okay. I think that PB might come on Friday if the conditions are good.

Ok pretty annoyed I missed it. Did she ease up or did she just get beat by Freeman? Think its fair to say Kimberlyn is in a league of her own this year but SH can compete with Gardner/Freeman if she brings her best come the final.

But I maintain the thought that anything can happen in a final she might suprise us(I hope).

For me the trials highlights will be the mens 400 and womens 100. I think Lendore can def go sub 45 here at NCAAs and I'm hoping he gets a top 3 finish. Just imagine Lendore vs Quow vs Solomon vs Lalonde vs Hewitt vs Forte possibly Jereem Richards and Machel Cedenio thrown in the mix if their schedules allow....

Women's 100 top 3 provided all goes as planned: KAB, SH, KS. Reckon KAB can drop a 10.7high if winds allow. MLA not getting that individual spot unless she gets the start etc on lock and beats Kai or if Kai runs the 200. Add Reyare T , AH to the mix make for a nice race- imagine if we still had Fana Ashby,Wanda Hutson, Monique Cabral.... would have been great.

Lendore does look to have the making of a sub-45 man, but I think that will have to wait until our trials. He drew lane 1 for his final tomorrow, so it will take one heck of a run for him to achieve that from lane 1.

Interesting. But I totally agree. I think the race for 1st in the 400 will be contested by mainly RQ, DL and maybe LG. JS will be there trying to make his A standard... Seen ZH run yesterday. Last year he was on point and ran mid 45s. I thought he would have run sub 46 but didnt this year. I hope he rebounds at the nationals.

Womens race will certainly be more KAB than anyone else. SH will take second and MLA and KS will fight for third. RT (Reyare) is looking like a good fill in. If conditions are perfect, KAB will break the national record with a 10.79- 10.83 run. The rest of the field should get PBs. This is the first time that the womens race looked this competitive.

On another note, dont rule out the mens 100m. It looks as if KB will take the title. Will he break RT's record? Hmm. Just put it this way, last year RT's best time before his 9.85 was 10.01 in Eugene Oregon. KB has ran 9.89 and a windy 9.85 along with a 10.06.  I think it is possible for Bledman to break it if those 9.8s are true. And if he does, then those 9.8s are true. This weekend he is running in New York. No Bolt or Powell. If he can finish in the top 2 (His biggest threats are Gay, Blake and maybe Rodgers), this will be a major boost to his confidence and we can possibly see that 9.85 NR broken in 2 weeks.... Although, it looks as if KB will win the 100, the race will be for the final two places and selection to the relay team. With RT looking the way he is, he might find himself in for a battle for the two remaining spots. For the past 5 years this event has been subject to many unexpected surprises. And I think were up for a big one this year.

Finally, we will have better luck bringing back Yorke to the National team than those girls. From what I understand they have all have left track and have no intention of returning. But yes, if they were still active, the team will be stronger. Its interesting though, those ladies are not that old. Many of the current and active Jamaican women ran against Cabral, Hutson and Ashby. If we had a track and field system like Jamaica, these girls will probably still be active.

On another note. KS just ran a windy 22.66. (+2.2). SH just ran 22.58. Both qualified for the final.

Dont be surprise if semoy beats Kimberly duncan tomorrow. She is a much better 100m runner than she is at 200. Just remember last year duncan was the better 200m runner, while semoy was the better in 100m. Semoy 200m has improved which shows she is stronger , so judging from this i expect a 10.90 from semoy to win ncaa's tommorow and a 11.08 from kai for third

Wow some great results I didn't expect Kai to be running that quick yet (although its just slightly wind aided) so that's great stuff the 4x1 looking better still. SH going to break that national record in the 2 again hopefully.

Jusbless Semoy hasn't looked nearly as strong in the 100 as she did last year, the 200 is her pet event this year- there is less technicality involved so perhaps that's why her 200 has gotten better not too sure. I don't think she is ready for 10.9 in the 100 yet but Kimberlyn is- she's proved it. Just wishing KS and SH the best hopefully we can get both in the top 3 in the 2.

Really unhappy about lane 1 for Lendore maybe top 3 is a big ask but let's see if he can go sub 45.

Wayne Davis getting into form nicely! Great to see he's back where he belongs

Hackett, Selvon, Lendore sprint into NCAA finals
Published: Thursday, June 7, 2012
Clayton Clarke

Semoy Hackett, Kai Selvon and Deon Lendore secured spots in the finals of their events on the opening day of action at the 2012 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, USA on Wednesday night. Hackett (LSU) booked her lane in the women’s 100m finals after finishing second in the second of three semifinal heats clocking 11.16, the fifth fastest of the day. The 2006 CAC Junior triple bronze medallist was just 0.06 seconds off her pb of 11.10 set earlier this year and also dipped under the Olympic A qualifying time of 11.29, for the second time this season. Selvon (Auburn) was sixth quickest stopping the clock at 11.21 in crossing the line third in the third heat. The top qualifier was Hackett’s school-mate Kimberlyn Duncan (11.10). The finals are carded for later today. The reigning national double sprint champion also registered a new pb lowering her previous best of 11.32 and getting under the all-important Olympic A mark. Selvon is now one of four local female sprinters to achieve the A standard. Hackett, World Championships bronze medallist Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Michelle Lee-Ahye are the others. This year’s Junior College double sprint queen Reyare Thomas is a B qualifier with 11.30.

Hackett began the day helping LSU to the top time in the women’s 4X100m semis. The defending champions clocked 42.68.

Selvon and her Auburn team-mates just missed on qualifying for the finals finishing with the ninth best time of 44.01. Minnesota with Nyoka Giles in the line-up was 13th (44.48) and T’Keyah Dumoy and Florida International, 23rd (49.09) Lendore (Texas A&M) was among the qualifiers for the men’s 400m finals set for Friday. Lendore was the seventh quickest in the semis clocking a near pb of 45.19. The first year student finished third in the heat two and clocking another Olympic qualifying time (standard-45.30) following his personal best run of 45.13 in April and 45.28 in the NCAA West Regionals last month. Ade Alleyne-Forte (LSU) and Zwede Hewitt (Baylor) failed in their bids to join Lendore in the medal round. Alleyne-Forte was 16th overall(46.34) while Hewitt was 22nd fastest (46.80).

Annie Alexander missed out getting her second straight medal in the women’s discus. The Tennessee student was fifth with a distance of 56.69.  In the trials earlier in the competition, Alexander was in silver medal position but could not improve in the last three rounds Ashlee Smith (McNeese State) was 11th (53.86) in the trials and did not advance to the finals.  In last year’s finals Alexander secured the bronze medal with a throw of 57.97. Kyron Blaise (LSU) was sixth in the men’s long jump finals with a third round leap of 7.79.  The 2008 double Carifta champion was off his pb of 7.91 set earlier this year. Shermund Allsop and Jamol James helped their schools’ relay teams to qualify for the men’s 4X100m finals. Allsop and his LSU returned the second fastest of 38.77 in the semis while James’ Tennessee squad was eighth (39.25). Emmanuel Stewart (Morgan State) and Richard Collingwood (Southern Mississippi) bowed out in the trials of the men’s discus. Stewart was 15th (54.99) while Collingwood did not compete.

Semoy and Kai are about to race. Wind sucks. So maybe no PBs.
