Don't know about the heady heights you guys are referencing, but the MLS is probably English Championship level if a little lower. Playing well in the MLS sadly doesn't attract attention of the highest level right now - hope you're right about in the next couple years. Possibly the MLS expansion will really do wonders for the competitiveness.
Bringing in Defoe, Dempsey, and Bradley in a World Cup Year, will do wonders for the MLS.

They definitely look like astute buys given the climate, Defoe especially. He's on stupid money tho - £60k a week rising to 90k a week depending on performance

Molino in cracking form
orlandocitysoccer.com

Orlando City’s first ever MLS signing Kevin Molino scored two massive goals in last night’s match against the FC Dallas Reserves, one of which proved to be the game winner when Dallas scored a second goal deep into stoppage time.

The brace boosts the Trinidadian International’s tally to three goals and two assists in five games played this season.

The productive statistical output this early in 2014 bodes well for Molino and the Lions, as the midfielder has never scored more than two goals in each of his previous three seasons with Orlando.

With MLS around the corner, Molino is focused more than ever as he continues to prepare for the inaugural top-flight campaign in 2015.

“The gaffer wants me to score at least 10-12 goals this season so I’m taking things very seriously this year,” said Molino in a phone interview with OrlandoCitySoccer.com. “Being the first MLS signing comes with a lot of responsibility, but I just want to cope with the pressure, live up to the expectations and continue delivering for my team.”

Molino and the team will now travel to face expansion side OKC Energy FC on Saturday, April 26. Former City players Jon Kempin, Christian Duke and Kevin Ellis have joined the Energy on loan from Sporting Kansas City this season, and the 2012 USL PRO MVP says the matchup against his former teammates provides extra motivation to find the back of the net once again.

“There is definitely extra motivation to go and score again this weekend, especially against Kempin,” added Molino. “All of these guys are good friends of mine. We built a relationship last year and I’m looking forward to seeing them again on Saturday.”

Robinho and Kaka linked to move to Orlando City in MLS
Graham Parker - UK Guardian

  • Kaka's move to Orlando closer after World Cup selection snub
  • Robinho seeking to dissolve contract for move to MLS
  • Milan's failure to reach Europe makes for motivated sellers
Orlando City, the expansion team who will begin play in MLS next season, may do so with not one, but two Brazilian superstars, after it has emerged that Robinho, as well as his AC Milan team mate Kaka, were targets for the club.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Robinho has asked to buy out the remainder of his contract prior to a potential summer move to MLS and Orlando. While Kaka has long been a target for Orlando, and a potential move has been the subject of heavy hints from Brazilian majority owner/backer Flavio Augusto da Silva even before Orlando’s MLS expansion was announced, the possibility of Robinho has come somewhat from leftfield.

The long MLS courtship of Kaka has been one of the league’s worst kept secrets, but little movement had been expected before the World Cup. However with neither man making the World Cup squad, and Milan failing to qualify for European competition next year, the picture has changed rapidly. Holding expensive and aging assets with a limited need for immediate squad depth, Milan are motivated sellers, while Da Silva sees the potentially lucrative Brazilian diaspora market in Miami as one of the keys to long term success.

Crucial to such a project is a credible team on the field — and while English coach Adrian Heath has moulded a strong lower division side, who won the USL Pro (the official third tier of US Soccer) title last year, the experience of previous Florida franchises, and the owner’s intimate understanding of the expectations that come with targeting Brazilian expats, means that name recognition will be a big factor when the team launches.

Former World Player of the Year Kaka and Robinho, the one-time phenom who inspired Pele to stop a training session and tell the then teenager he reminded him of himself, would certainly fit the bill, and help satisfy some of the 214,369 people who “liked” Orlando City’s Brazilian Facebook page within two months of it being set up.

Kaka in particular is a personal friend of da Silva, and has spoken of his desire to play in the USA, though at one point the presence of his younger brother Digao on the New York Red Bulls line up, and the fact Kaka owned an apartment in the city, had caused speculation he may in fact be on his way there.

Kaka has also been linked with LA Galaxy, at the time when David Beckham was confirmed as being on his way from that club — indeed his former Real Madrid team mate used one of his farewell press conferences at the Galaxy to talk up Kaka as a possible prospect for the Galaxy. Ironically, should Beckham successfully launch his Miami MLS franchise, he could find his friend playing for his new Floridian rivals.

According to a report in Italian paper La Gazetto dello Sport on Wednesday however, Robinho may in fact sign first. His representatives have reportedly met with Milan CEO Adriano Galliani to discuss a mutual dissolution of the player’s contract, to take effect before the Italian season resumes — even though Orlando do not enter MLS play until March 2015.

Meanwhile, despite the steady drip of rumors about Kaka to Orlando, and the fact that the player has a now-triggered clause in his contract allowing him to leave should Milan fail to qualify for Europe, Galliani is bullish, publicly at least, about retaining the player — claiming on Tuesday that there was a “99%” chance Kaka would be with the Rossoneri next season. There is a real question now though over how much of that season exactly will be spent in Milan with Kaka’s international prospects so diminished (even when given such a stage), and Milan losing income right at the moment their majority owner Silvio Berlusconi appears to have finally seen his broader power base eroded by scandal and legal issues.

Orlando are refusing to comment on the transfer speculation they’ve helped fan, but will be delighted that the expansion focus, so heavily tilted towards New York City FC, is for now at least firmly on their next move. Or maybe two moves.

I hope they actually let him play with them and not bench him behind 'bigger names'. Either way, being around them will lift his game. Seem like a determined youth.

Kevin Molino gives Lions a little more roar
By Vince Nairn (StarNews Online)

Even when he wasn't scoring goals, Kevin Molino brought value to Orlando City SC. Putting the ball in the net at a high rate has made him the early front-runner for USL Pro MVP.

Molino leads the league with nine goals in Orlando's 12 matches, two more than he scored in three previous seasons. He scored a hat trick May 21 against Charlotte and has been a vital piece to the attack for the league-leading Lions.

"My hopes have always been from when I first set my eyes on him that he could become a top drawer player," Orlando coach Adrian Heath said. "The one thing about him was he didn't score enough goals. Kevin's always made a lot of goals, but he hasn't scored a lot of them."

That's changed this year, as Molino has been more assertive about getting in the box and taking some chances for himself, Heath said. Molino is still tied for the league lead in assists (five), but his newfound goal-scoring prowess has given the team another layer of scoring.

Orlando has won nine of its last 10 and is the only remaining undefeated team in USL Pro. With matches against the Montreal Impact Reserves and struggling Dayton and Orange County, Orlando could realistically be undefeated heading into a stretch at the end of June against LA Galaxy II, Sacramento and Wilmington (twice).

"Obviously, the first few games, it was different," Heath said of the team's 0-0-2 start. "We've been on a little bit of a roll as of late. Once you start to win games, the confidence comes back."
