People close to youth football could tell you this is a very gifted generation of players. They have real strength in every part of the pitch.

I wish them best of luck in moving forward and representing T&T on the world stage and advancing their football careers. But money is not the real issue. its just a convenient excuse for all the establishment men to trot out for their inevitable failures.

Unless drastic changes have already taken place, these players will have it difficult to advance past the CFU. Then they will be labelled as 'shythounds' and 'lazy'.

I know him personally...he is a good player that should get a look at. However he is too old for these qualifiers. He is 19, so he will have to be considered for U20 and Olympic selection.

Final phase for 23 players to impress.
T&T Guardian Reports.

The national Under-17 men’s football squad will be trimmed to 23 players this weekend, as coach Shawn Cooper looks ahead to the upcoming Caribbean Football Union zone of World Cup qualification, for the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates.

Cooper has been overseeing preparations with assistant coach Leonson Lewis over the past few weeks and has been afforded some additional time to prepare after the CFU confirmed a change in dates of the matches, from July 3-10 to July 24-28.

T&T will face British Virgin Islands at home in their opener on July 24 before facing Suriname (July 26) and Guyana, two days later in its round-robin group. While the push back in dates is affording Cooper additional preparation time, it has resulted in him having to enter the tournament without a couple of his North American-based players.

Both goalkeeper Johan Welch and Sterling Noreiga of MLS club Houston Dynamo had been slated to join the team for the initial dates but are now unable to travel due to other commitments in late July.

“The change in dates gives us more time to prepare the team but it also means that a couple of the guys who we have been looking at from North America will be unable to join the team for the tournament,” Cooper said.

“They have other commitments during that time and initially all arrangements were made for their travel to Trinidad for the original dates,” Cooper said.

Cooper, who also has Ross Russell and Terrance Marcelle as his other assistants, will name a 23-man squad on the weekend that will train together before he submits his final 18-man squad for the tournament in the final week leading up to the opening clash.

Two other US-based players , attacking midfielder Dre Fortune and Mani Walcott from Maryland are almost certain to make the final squad.  Fortune has been training with the T&T squad.

Attached to Triangle United Soccer club, Fortune was also invited to train with the USA  Under-15 team in April 2011. He is eligible to play for T&T through parentage.

The five group winners and the best second-place team will advance to a final round of qualifying August 19-30 at a venue to be determined later to decide the Caribbean's five berths in the Concacaf  finals, set for April 6-19, 2013 in Panama.

Cuba, Haiti advance in U-17 qualifying

Host nations Cuba and Haiti became the first teams to advance in Caribbean qualifying for the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, both posting wins Monday to clinch first-round group titles and berths in the CFU finals.

Yorjandy Samonte scored two goals, giving him four in three games, and goalkeeper Yurisbel Ramirez posted his third shutout in five days to lead Cuba past Puerto Rico 2-0 in Havana's Estadio Pedro Marrero. It was Cuba's third win in as many matches and finished it with nine points atop Group 2.

Puerto Rico, which ended Monday's match with 10 players after Gustavo Chamorro was ejected with his second yellow card in the 76th minute, was five points back in second, two ahead of Aruba and three better than Bahamas.

Likewise in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Jean Derival also scored twice - his third and fourth goals in three games -- to lift Haiti past the Dominican Republic 3-1 . Derival also scored in Haiti's 3-0 win over St. Lucia on Thursday and in its 4-1 victory over Curacao on Saturday.

Jonel Desire was Haiti's other scoring hero through the first round, tallying two against St. Lucia and three more against Curacao.

Haiti also finished with nine points, atop Group 3, five better than both the Dominican Republic and Curacao. St. Lucia lost all three games.

Cuba and Haiti will await the winners of the other three groups, along with the best second-place team from all five groups, in a final round August 19-30 at a site yet to be selected to determine the Caribbean's five berths in April's CONCACAF championship.

Group 1 with Antigua, Jamaica and Bermuda begins play on Wednesday, with Group 4 involving the British Virgin Islands, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago set for July 24-26, and Group 5 pitting Barbados, Grenada, St. Kitts & Nevis and the U.S. Virgin Islands to play July 29-August 2.

T&T to host CFU U-17 group.
By Roger Seepersad (Express).

Trinidad and Tobago will be hosting the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 Championships Group 4 qualifying tournament next week.

This was announced at a Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation press conference at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain yesterday.

Brandon Creed will lead the national Under-17 at the tournament.

T&T will be hosting Guyana, the British Virgin Islands and Suriname in Group Four from July 24-28, with the top team going through to the next round of CFU qualifying for the 15th FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 8 next year.

The winners of Group Four will join Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica in the next round.

The final group of qualifiers, Group Five, involving Barbados, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis and the US Virgin Islands will be played later this month.

The winners of the five qualifying groups and the best second placed team will move into the final round of qualifiers to be held from August 19-30 ,with the top five teams going into the CONCACAF finals scheduled for April 6-19 next year.

The final squad is yet to be named, with the players still doing their final preparations. Twenty-three players are in the training under head coach Shawn Cooper who said it will be a difficult task to cut the squad to 18.

T&T will play their first match in the qualifiers on July 24 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Head of marketing at the TTFF Anthony Harford said yesterday it would cost $500,000 to stage the group qualifying. He said despite the organisation being strapped for cash, it was important to bring international football to T&T.

He also noted that there were some international friendly matches in the making including one against a top African nation for next year.

He said that despite the challenges with money, the TTFF have kept the national teams active. He revealed that T&T senior side have an international friendly against Canada on August 15, as well as one against Puerto Rico in September but both matches will be played away from home.

He said they just could not afford to play any matches in T&T.

T&T Under-17 roster—Brendon Creed (captain), Kevin John, Stephon Seepersad, D'eandre Villaroel, Martieon Watson, Josiah Trimmingham, Leland Archer, Shaquille Moses, Maurice Ford, Stephan Spicer, Shannon Gomez, Jabari Mitchell, Jarred Dass, Andre Fortune, Mani Walcott, Matthew Woo Ling, Levi Garcia, Kishun Seecharan, David Maloney, Akeem Garcia, Aikim Andrews, Brent Sam, Weah Adams.

Creed to captain U-17s in upcoming CFU qualifiers.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

SKHY FC midfielder Brendon Creed will captain this country’s Men’s Under 17 team in their upcoming Caribbean Football Union Qualifying tournament which kicks off with a double header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday.

Creed was unveiled to the media along with his teammates at a media launch at the Queen’s Park Oval ballroom on Thursday afternoon. T&T will face the British Virgin Islands from 7pm on Tuesday following the double header opener between Guyana and Suriname from 5pm.

Head Coach Shawn Cooper has a squad of 23 players in camp at the moment and the final 18 man squad will be announced on the weekend. On Wednesday night, the Under 17s lost 4-0 to a strong North East Stars line up coached by Angus Eve at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Their goals came from Kaydion Gabriel (2), Micah Lewis and Neil Mitchell. North East’s squad included Cornell Glen, Kerry Baptiste, Seon Power, Under 23 team players Kareem Moses, Sheldon Bateau, Jayson Joseph, Jeromie Williams, Jean-Luc Rochford and Guyanese international Charles Pollard.

Cooper said he was not bothered by what some may view as a T&T/Guyana rivalry as the hosts will the face them in their final group fixture on Saturday.

“I don’t think there is a rivalry between us and Guyana, maybe at the senior level but at the youth level we have always been dominant and we have done well against them,” Cooper said.

But he is experienced enough to know that complacency will do no good to T&T but a bit of confidence never hurts.

“We spent some time screening players. We saw over 400 of them and we came to forty and now it’s 23 players in camp and it’s been a difficult job to get the final squad as the competition has been stiff. We have worked hard and there are some exciting players in the team.

I think they are capable of getting the job done and qualifying for the World Cup is certainly a possibility. We will take no team and no match for granted.” Cooper added.

Skipper Creed, shy at first, sounded more relaxed and certain of his team’s  capabilities as he responded to question number three.

“Well we are hoping to do well,” he initially replied.

“Of course I am confident in all of my teammates. We want to finish on top and we have worked really hard so far. We are very anxious to get out there and Tuesday and start the first match. This is what we have been working for… to win matches,” he continued.

TTFF Marketing Manager Anthony Harford disclosed that Blue Waters, Caribbean Airlines, Coca Cola, Gatorade and Wi Sports have come on board as partners for this tournament.

He also revealed that the T&T Under 20 team will play the Grenada senior team in a friendly there later this month.

With the T&T Senior Team carded to face Canada on August 15th, Harford mentioned that the friendly against a top African nation will now be played on the FIFA date in February 2013 but that currently negotiations are taking place for a friendly international against Wales in Cardiff in November.

Another friendly way to Puerto Rico in September has already been confirmed.

BVI arrives on Sunday confident ahead of CFU opener.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago National Under 17 men’s captain Brendon Creed is eager to make a good first impression in front of local football fans when he leads this country into action against British Virgin Islands on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 7pm.

The Shawn Cooper-coached team will have a final training session tomorrow (Monday) before taking the field in the opening Caribbean Football Union Under 17 World Cup qualifier. Suriname and Guyana will meet from 5pm in the first game of the double header.

Skipper Creed, shy at first, sounded more relaxed and certain of his team’s capabilities as continued giving his take on the team’s readiness.

“Of course I am confident in all of my teammates. We want to finish on top and we have worked really hard so far. We are very anxious to get out there and Tuesday and start the first match. This is what we have been working for… to win matches,” Creed told TTFF Media prior to the team shifting its camp base to Ambassador Hotel.

“Overall the preparations have been good. Every player has worked really hard and over the next couple of days we will focus on some of areas that we think needs brushing up on before the first game.

Maybe some players will be a bit nervous because it’s the first match for a lot of the guys but we are determined to do well for the country. We want to make the fans delighted so I’m hoping they can come out and give us the support at the games,” added the SKHY FC midfielder.

W Connection midfielder Matthew Woo Ling who made his professional debut at age 15 for the club earlier this year is hoping to the host nation can grab all three points on Tuesday.

“Winning our first game will be very important despite whichever team we are facing. I think all the players have done well and right now we are working on building team chemistry both on and off the playing field. For me personally, I am hoping I can play a part and contribute to the team.

All the players are trying to help each other in terms of improving their game and I think this can be plus for us when we take on the other teams in the matches.”

British Virgin Islands which once had Tottenham Hotspur manager André Villas-Boas as its technical director in 2000, have reportedly drafted in some US-based players into their squad for the upcoming tournament.

BVI coach Vincent Samuel, speaking ahead of his team’s arrival in Port of Spain on Sunday, said his team was well prepared.

“The guys have been playing not only in the school league but also have equipped themselves well in friendly games against senior sides.

They are a young team, the average age being 15, but we are travelling with confidence.” BVI will be based at Cascadia Hotel for the tournament.

Tickets, priced at $10 will be sold on matchday at the stadium.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

U-17s go for opening win in CFU qualifiers.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and  Tobago’s National Under 17 Men’s team will attempt to set its 2013 World Cup campaign off on a winning note when it takes on British Virgin Islands in their opening Caribbean Football Union Under 17 qualifying encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 7pm on Tuesday.

The squad, under head coach Shawn Cooper has only one player with previous international experience at this level, that being forward Akeem Garcia who was a member of the team in 2011 that was one match away from qualifying for the Finals that year in Mexico.

But truth be told, there are some promising talent in the current mix with the likes of midfielders Dre Fortune who has had stints at Spanish giants Barcelona (Academy) and Manchester City and W Connection’s Matthew Woo Ling who spent some time at Tottenham Hotspur. Team captain Brendon Creed and US-based midfielder Mani Walcott will also be hoping to impress.

“All of our players are promising,” head coach Cooper told TTFF Media following an early morning training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

“There are some you may have heard more of than others but we have selected the best players at this time and I think this is a big occasion for all of them. With the exception of Akeem, these players will be wearing a national shirt for the first time so there will be some nerves in the camp but generally speaking the spirit is good, they’ve all worked hard and just waiting on the opening whistle to get the ball rolling,” Cooper added.

“We will do our best to ensure we start the tournament in the best possible way which is obviously getting a victory and setting the pace for the rest of the tournament.”

Cooper’s opposite number Vincent Samuel said  BVI will not be bullied by the hosts.

“We are here to put on our best performance. We know Trinidad and Tobago is considered to be a strong opponent but that will not scare us. We want to win just as badly as every other team in the competition,” Samuel said.

Guyana will take on Suriname in the opening game of the double header from 5pm.

Guyana coach Sampson Gilbert told the media he was confident that his team could top the group and advance to the CONCACAF Finals next year in Panama.

“We are confident that we can get the job done in Trinidad. We have a good squad of players who are capable of winning this group. Because this is an Under-17 team, we just don’t wish to develop their football alone, but their personality to go along with it. The four pillars which are the foundation at this level are physical, technical, psychological and social aspects.

“We are working not just on football development, but their etiquette and how they socialise with one another,” he added.

The group winner will advance to the CONCACAF Finals in Panama City next April 6-19. The tournament will feature a 12-team field, with Canada, Mexico and the United States automatically qualified from North America, Central America allocated four berths and the Caribbean five. The top four teams from the final round will advance to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates in October.

On Facebook : Akeem Garcia in 36th and Brent Sam gets his hattrick with a clinical finish in the 37th, T&T leading 8-0. This game is long over. T&T too hot to handle for a shell shocked BVI.
