Kimberlee John-Williams broke a meet record en route to two gold medals when the 19th Caribbean Islands Swimming Championship (CISC) continued at the Roly Bisslik Olympic Pool, Savaneta, Aruba on Sunday night. The US-based John-Williams broke the 2004 record set by Dominica’s Laura A Rodriguez when she stopped the clock at one minute, 05.94 seconds in the 15-17 girls 100m backstroke ahead of Bahamian Bria Deveaux (1:07.54) and Jamaica’s Alexia Royal-Eatmon (1:07.54) while Rebecca Marshall of T&T was fifth in 1:09.93. Eight events later, John-Williams bagged a second gold medal when she touched the wall first in the 100m butterfly in 1:05.47. The trio of Caryle Blondell, Dylan Carter and Sharntelle Mc Lean were able to add to their gold medal haul from Saturday’s opening night.

Blondell outswam his rivals in the 18 & Over boys 100m backstroke in 58.97 while Anthony Edwards of T&T was fifth in 1:02.24.

Carter also continued his good form as he won the boys 100m butterfly in 56.31 beating Netherlands Antilles Jursil Chirino (57.35) and fellow T&T swimmer, Joshua Romany (57.65) into second and third, respectively. Mc Lean was first to the wall in the 18 & Over girls 100m butterfly in 1:04.76 while teammate Simone Maundy was sixth in 1:11.08. Debutante, Alexandria Donahue got her gold in the 15-17 girls 200m breaststroke in 2:42.44, and the 11-12 boys 400m freestyle team of Osaze Riley, Johnpaul Pedro, Kael Yorke and anchor James Gillette raced home for gold in 4:08.75 well ahead of Puerto Rico (4:13.34) and Aruba (4:18.88). There were also five silver medals and four bronze medals for T&T, who lead the 16-team table with 32 medals, 13 gold, ten silver and nine bronze, four more medals than host Aruba (13 gold, nine silver, six bronze). Among the silver medal winners, Levar Goossen took second in the 18 & Over boys 200m freestyle (1:58.74); Jabari Baptiste was second in the 13-14 boys 50m freestyle (24.73 seconds); Arielle Downes, in the 11-12 girls 200m butterfly (2:42.68); Kael Yorke, 11-12 boys 200m butterfly (2:30.43) and Syriah David, 13-14 girls 100m butterfly (1:07.59).

Abraham Mc Leod got bronze in the 18 & Over boys 200m breaststroke (2:28.55); Jessica Gay, in the 13-14 200m breaststroke (2:57.25); Dario Omiss, in the 11-12 boys 200m breaststroke (2:53.94) and Levar Goossen in the 18 & Over boys’ 100m butterfly (58.15 seconds). On Saturday, Carter broke the record in the 50m butterfly held by Bahamian Vereance E Burrows (25.39) when he won gold in 24.53. Fellow T&T swimmer and second placed Joshua Romany (25 seconds) also surpassed Burrows’ record while Timothy Wynter of Jamaica copped bronze in 25.55. The 18 & Over boys 400m freestyle relay squad of Strasser Sankar, Goossen, Mc Leod and anchor Blondell established a new record of 3:30.22 minutes to erase the 2004 mark (3:35.33) which was held by Barbados. Bahamas was second (3:39.09) and host country Aruba third (3:52.89).

Story Created: Jun 28, 2012 at 12:36 AM ECT

On Tuesday evening, on the third and penultimate day of competition, Trinidad and Tobago's Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) team had amassed 724 points to head Aruba (718), Puerto Rico (414.5), Bahamas (383), Suriname (369), Barbados (330), Jamaica 287 and Bermuda (271).

At the Roly Bisslik Olympic Pool in Aruba, Napolean Howell finished first in the Boys 18 & Over 50M breaststroke in 28.67 seconds to establish a new CISC record, erasing George Bovell III's record of 29.48 set in 2004.  Teammate Abraham Mc Leod was second in 29.06, while Bermuda's Julian Fletcher was third in 29.46.

The Boys 15-17 400m medley relay team of Dylan Carter, Jonathan Ramkissoon, Emiro Goossen and Joshua Romany obliterated Cuba's 1982 record of 4:01.75 when anchor Romany touched the wall in 3:57.53.  They were trailed by Suriname (4:00.03) and Aruba (4:09.90).

The Boys 18 & Over 400m medley relay team were not to be outdone as they too erased the 2010 Cuban record (3:57.87).  Caryle Blondell, Abraham Mc Leod, Levar Goossen and anchor Strasser Sankar posted the new record of 3:57.33 to beat the Bahamas (4:03.76) and Aruba (4:28.74).

Jabari Baptiste touched the wall in 2:16.14 which was good enough for first place in the Boys 13-14 200m backstroke, beating Jamaica's Matthew Lyn (2:22.63) and Suriname's Michael Grauwde  (2:24.72).

In the Girls 11-12 50m breaststroke, Aliyah Noel tied for gold medal honours with Margaret Higgs of the Bahamas in 37.38, while Suelenn Graanoogst of Suriname (37.94) received the bronze medal.

Arielle Cape was second in the Girls 13-14 200m back when she posted 2:33.94 behind Puerto Rico's Nina Ebensperger who won in 2:32.69.  Sariyah Sherry of Barbados was third in 2:33.98.

Jonathan Ramkissoon missed breaking Ross Phillip's 20.11 national record of 30.17 when he swam to a third place finish in 30.19 in the Boys 15-17 50m breast.  Meanwhile, the Surinamese duo of Rafael van Leeuwaarde (29.99) and Diguan Pigot (30.16) won the gold and silver respectively.  Other T&T medalists for the evening receiving bronze were Syriah David, Johnnya Ferdinand and Anthony Edwards who received their first individual medals for the meet.

David got her medal in the Girls 13-14 400m free with Bahamas' Joanna Evans (4:37.96) and Barbados' Sariyah Sherry (4:41.15) copping gold and silver.  Ferdinand, swimming in the Girls 13-14 50m breast, was third behind Oreoluwa Cherebin of Grenada (35.90) and Kimberley Willoughby of Barbados (36.35), with teammate Jessica Gay sixth in 37.98.  Edwards was third in the Boys 18 & Over 200m back (2:20.06) behind Jean Luis Gomez of the Dominican Republic (2:10.20) and Ramon Walton of Jamaica (2:19.37).

Baptiste, Donahue add more gold medals
....Aruba ends T&T’s CISC reign

Published: Friday, June 29, 2012

T&T’s Jabari Baptiste won two gold medals as did Alexandria Donahue  on the final night of competition at the 19th Caribbean Islands Swimming Championship (CISC) at the Roly Bisslik Olympic Pool, Savaneta, Aruba on Wednesday.

However, the three first place finishes coupled with silver and five bronze medals were not enough to secure a third straight lien on the overall team title for the 40-member T&T contingent. Despite claiming the most medals at the five-day meet which ended on Wednesday night with 74 (26 gold, 26 silver, 22 bronze) T&T’s tally of 877 points, was just shy of host Aruba’s 890 points from 69 medals (26 gold, 22 silver, 21 bronze) after going into the final night with a six points cushion.

T&T won three gold, six silver and five bronze on Wednesday’s final night while Aruba tallied four gold, silver and six bronze to dethrone the two-time defending champions. A distant third was Puerto Rico with 558.5 points and 43 medals (17 gold, 12 silver, 14 bronze.)

Baptiste’s first gold medal on the night, came in the  13-14 boys 100m freestyle in 53.76 seconds while Suriname’s Zuhayr Pigot (54.20 secs) and Puerto Rico’s Andres Solivan (54.66) got silver and bronze respectively. His other gold on the night came when he whipped his rivals in the 100m backstroke in one minute, 01.71 seconds well ahead of Suriname’s Daniel Kolf (1:03.54 mins) and Aruban, Raigel Hoen (1:05.62 mins). Donahue, meanwhile touched the wall first in the 15-17 girls 100m breaststroke in one minute, 14.21 seconds followed by Jamaica’s Breanna Roman (1:14.68) and Suriname’s Evita Leter (1:16.44). Among the silver medal winners for T&T, which may be ruing the disqualification of its girls medley relay quartet the night before as a key blow to its three-peat bid were Amira Pilgrim, Napoleon Howell, Jonathan Ramkissoon, Syriah David, Rebecca Marshall and the boys 11-12 relay squad. Pilgrim just missed out on the gold medal when she touched the wall in 28.93 in the 11-12 girls 50m freestyle to trail Jamaica’s Angara Sinclair (28.83) while Aruba’s Florence Kock took third in 28.97.

In the 18 & Over boys 100m breaststroke splash, Bermuda’s Julian Fletcher (1:04.83 mins) turned the tables on T&T duo, Howell (1:04.98) and Abraham Mc Leod (1:05.37) with his record swim which erased the old mark of . Suriname’s Diguat Pigot swam to a new record in the 15-17 boys 100m breaststroke in 1:05.83 while Ramkissoon was second in 1:06.81, and Aruba, Jordy Groters, third in 1:07.57. David (2:37.73 mins) followed Suriname’s Candis Pique (2:37.21 mins) to the wall in the 13-14 girls 200m individual medley while Alexis Clarke of Barbados was third om 2:38.20. Marshall (2:30.27 mins) had to settle for silver behind Aruba’s Daniella Van Den Berg (2:29.44) while Jamaica Breanna Roman was third in 2:31.11. The quartet of Christian Marsden, Dario Omiss, Kael Yorke and James Gillette combined for a time of 4:41.33  for second in the 11-12 boys 400m medley relay.

First was Puerto Rico in 4:39.40 and third, Aruba in 4:49.81. Also securing bronze were Omiss, Theana Hay, and the girls and boys 13-14 400m medley teams. Omiss secured his second medal on the night in the 11-12 boys 100m breaststroke in 1:18.60, while Grenada’s Kerry Ollivierre won in 1:16.90 and Aruban, George Den Dunnen, was second in 1:17.67.

Hay was third 15-17 girls 800m freestyle in 10:24.70 to trail Van Den Berg (9:28.69 mins) and Megan Trinidad of Netherlands Antilles (10:03.02). The 13-14 girls 400m medley relay quartet of Ariel Cape, Jessica Gay, David ad Samantha Khan was third in 4:51.68 behind Puerto Rico (4:42.45) and Bahamas (4:48.87) while the Dyllon Joshua, David Wiltshire, Joshua Ramkissoon and Baptiste was also third in the boys equivalent in 4:17.04. Suriname won the gold in 4:11.29 and Puerto Rico got silver in 4:14.75. The T&T swimmers were expected to return home last night.

Bovell in final London warm-up

Bovell in final London warm-up
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jul 4, 2012 at 11:58 PM ECT

George Bovell will be on show on the weekend in his last warm-up meet ahead of the 2012 London Olympics. The Trinidad and Tobago swimmer will compete in four events at the Quebec Cup, in Montreal, Canada.

"I intend to race the 50 and 100 freestyle as well as the 50 and 100 backstroke events because they really complement the freestyle training.

"I am now just starting to back off my workload this week," Bovell continued, "as we glide down to the Olympics, exactly a month away. With the rest, I expect to gain easy speed. At this point it would be great to be fast, but the times are unimportant. The emphasis is on executing the many details that the different events consist of correctly."

At the 2004 Games, in Athens, Greece, Bovell became the first T&T swimmer to climb an Olympic podium. He bagged bronze in the men's 200 metres individual medley in one minute, 58.80 seconds, finishing behind Americans Michael Phelps, the gold medallist in 1:57.14, and Ryan Lochte (1:58.78).

"I have been watching the USA Olympic swimming trials," said Bovell. "Phelps and Lochte look like they will be very strong next month.

"I paid special attention to the form of my American rivals in the sprint events. Nathan Adrian looked very strong in the 100. I expected him to surely be on the team in the 50 as well, but was surprised when he was beaten by Anthony Ervin and Cullen Jones. The interesting thing here is that I have beaten Jones and Ervin, who I will face in London, all year, but haven't managed to beat Nathan in ages. The question here is: Can they repeat this peaked form in just one month?

"It is important to note," Bovell continued, "that Ervin and Jones, who are the two fastest Americans in the water, both have African American heritage. I hope this serves to further discredit the ignorant stereotype that African people are not good swimmers, and will serve to inspire more young people of African heritage to follow in their footsteps."

Cesar Cielo is among the favourites for Olympic gold in the 50 free. The Brazilian swimmer is the defending champion.

"In terms of Cesar and my other rivals, they will be fast. I believe they have shown their cards when they peaked earlier this season for their Olympic trials. We know what they are capable of, whereas I have not peaked yet since last summer. The way I see it, focusing on them is useless. I do what I can when I can to prepare, and when the time comes I will simply swim my own race."

In London, Bovell will compete in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back.

"The 100 metres free and 100 metres back," Bovell told the Express, "are swims to break the ice, so to speak. It is quite possible that I make the semi-finals, but I don't expect to be in the running for medals in those. In the 50 metres free, however, as a finalist at last summer's World Championships, I definitely expect to be competing for a medal once again."

As far as individual medalists go on form this year, because George has been so fast already and has not rested, he is probably our best chance for an individual medal after Kellyann. A medal in swimming just before track gets going will set us off right. I like Njisane's prospects as well.

Swimming 100 free and 100 back took my chances of putting those two young boys on the team. They cam within half a second of the B times but will have had to sit out due to George's preference. Look out for those two in the future though, starting with world juniors next year.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Bovell third in Canada Cup 100 'free'
Story Created: Jul 7, 2012 at 10:57 PM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago's Olympics-bound swimmer George Bovell bagged 100-metre freestyle bronze on Friday night at the annual Canada Cup in Montreal, his last competitive meet before heading to the Games later this month.

Bovell touched the wall in 49.90 seconds to finish third at Olympic Park Pool behind fellow Club Wolverine swimmers Milorad Cavic, who win in 49.32, and Robert Savulich, who was second in 49.58. Michael Wynalda was fourth in 50.75 as Club Wolverine swept the top four.

Bovell's 50m split of 23.33 was actually second only to Cavic, but he was only just overhauled by 24-year-old Savulich in the final lap.

In the heats, Bovell had the second best time of 50.66 in finishing second behind Cavic in Heat Six.

The T&T ace swimmer will go for gold again today, the final day of the meet in his pet event, the 50m freestyle, while he is also slated to compete in the 100m backstroke event.

T&T Olympic bronze medal winner George Bovell III was expected to go after more medals last night after he qualified to compete in both the men’s 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke A finals at the annual Canada Cup at the Montreal Olympic Park 50m Pool yesterday. He was the first and second fastest swimmer in the 50m freestyle and backstroke heats respectively, contested earlier in the day. First up, the 28-year-old Bovell III who earned bronze in the 100m freestyle on Friday night in 49.90 seconds, topped the field in the 50m freestyle heats in 22.31 seconds to be one of five Club Wolverine swimmers in the ten-man final. A distant second  was Luke Peddie in 23.25 followed by Robert Savulich (23.30), Richard Hortness (23.40), Duje Draganja (23.45), Martyn Forde (23.49), Colin Russell (23.56), Barry Murphy (23.59), Thomas Gossland (23.77) and Oleksandr Loginov (23.79).

Four events later Bovell, a seven-time World Championship finalists clocked 26.45 seconds to finish behind Charles Francis (26.22) qualifying for the 50m backstroke final. Third fastest was Thibault Delecluse (26.87) followed by Jeffrey Swanston (26.99), his brother Matthew Swanston (27.01), Andrew Ford (27.20), Michael Wynalda (27.39), Adam Best (27.64), Shawn Nee (28.05) and Felix Cote-Leduc (28.14). The other finishers in the ten-man final were Wynalda (50.75),  Hortness (50.93), Blake Worsley (50.97), Hassaan Abdel-Khalik (51.34), Ryan Feeley (51.37), Roman Willets (51.42) and  Gossland (51.61). Bovell was second in the sixth of eighth heats in 50.60 behind Cavic (50.20) while Willets (51.18), Feeley (51.43), Justin Glanda (51.71), Joe Bartoch (52.05), Keegan Zanalta (52.86), Michael Karnakov (53.28), Luke Hall (52.45) and Nicholas Lafleur (53.14) were the other finishers in the heat. Double gold for Bovell
Story Created: Jul 10, 2012 at 12:00 AM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago's Olympic bronze medalist George Bovell III sent a strong warning to his rivals ahead of this month's London Olympic Games when he whipped his rivals in both the men's A 50 metres freestyle and backstroke finals on the final night of the Canada Cup on Sunday.

Swimming out of lane four in the 50m freestyle at the Montreal Olympic Park, the 28-year-old Bovell touched the wall in 22.01 seconds, well ahead of his Club Wolverine teammate Duje Draganja of Croatia who ended in 22.97 seconds.

Another of Bovell's training partners, American Robert Savulic took bronze in 23 seconds flat.

Earlier Sunday, Bovell had topped the field in the 50m freestyle heats in 22.31 seconds.

Bovell then outclassed the field in the 50m backstroke in 25.80 seconds to beat Charles Francis (26.04) and Jeffrey Swanston (26.49) into second and third place respectively.

In the morning heats, Bovell, a double gold and silver Pan American Games medalist clocked 26.45 seconds to finish behind Francis (26.22) as one of the top qualifier for the 50m backstroke final.

The US-based swimmer also captured bronze in the 100m freestyle A final on Friday night after teammate Milora Cavic took gold in 49.32 and Savulich, silver in 49.58.

For Bovell, the weekend outing was his first since winning a gold and two bronze at the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invitational Meet in Texas during the first week of June.

The Canada Cup was his last competitive meet before the Olympics which runs from July 27 to August 12.

Bovell, a three-time Olympian, won bronze at the Athens Olympics in 2004 in the 200m individual medley.

Bovell happy with Canada performances
…expects faster times in London

Published: Friday, July 13, 2012

T&T Olympic Games-bound swimmer George Bovell III said yesterday he was happy with his performances at the four-day Canada Cup, which ended at the Montreal Olympic Park 50m pool on Sunday.

Bovell III, a seven-time World Championship finalist, won gold in the 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle and a bronze in the 100m freestyle. Last Friday, the 28-year-old claimed bronze in the men’s 100m freestyle A final in 49.90 to trail club-mates Milorad Cavic (49.32) and Robert Savulich (49.58). This after he was second in the sixth of eight heats in 50.60 behind Cavic (50.20). He then opted out of the 100m backstroke on Saturday, before returning to the pool for his double-gold swim on Sunday’s final day of competition.

First up, the Auburn University graduate touched the wall in 22.01 seconds well ahead of his team-mate Duje Draganja (22.97) and Robert Savulich (23.00) to complete a Club Wolverine medal sweep. Earlier on Sunday morning, Bovell III also topped the field in the 50m freestyle heats in 22.31 seconds ahead of Luke Peddie (23.25), Savulich (23.30), Richard Hortness (23.40) and Draganja (23.45). And in his third and final event, the T&T swimmer outclassed the field in the men’s 50m backstroke in 25.80 seconds, a new national record to beat Charles Francis (26.04) and Jeffrey Swanston (26.49) into second and third place respectively. In the morning heats, Bovell, a double gold and silver Pan American Games medalist, clocked 26.45 seconds to finish behind Francis (26.22) as the top qualifiers for the final. Commenting on his overall showing in his last competitive meet before he goes into battle in London at the Aquatic Centre, Bovell said: “The times were fast. My 50 freestyle time would have won the prestigious Paris Open which was won by Matthew Target of Australia (22.14).

“So I was faster than everyone else this weekend and I expect to get faster as I really rest and recover over the next 25 days in order to peak at the Olympics.” With regards to his 100m backstroke he said: “It was about the same as it has been all year. The swims were solid all round.”  Reflecting on his decision to skip the 100m backstroke, Bovell said he scratched because his body was just too broken down. Bovell, who won bronze in the 200m individual medley at the 2004 Olympics, said he was just going to rest and sharpen up. “I noticed a few things that I need to fine tune and was pleasantly surprised that some things that I have been struggling with are coming together nicely.” With his competitive schedule behind him, Bovell and his club-mates are set to head to a training camp in Spain today.  The Canada meet was the first for Bovell since he won a gold and two bronze medals at the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invitational Meet in Texas during the first week of June. At the meet, Bovell won gold in the 50m freestyle (22.11 secs) while he was third in both the 100m backstroke (56.06 secs) and 100m freestyle (49.84 secs).

George swam a sub 50 this year twice already and unrested. With the three next swimmers all around 50 high to 51 flat with a flat start, we were just outside the time needed to qualify our 4 x 100 freestyle to London. Serbia was 16th with a 3:21.93. Our flat start times were around 3:22 high. Good enough for 17th. NO vision by the swimming association again!
Success will never take you by surprise.

Bovell splashes for second Olympic medal
By STEPHON NICHOLAS Thursday, July 26 2012

FORMER Olympic bronze medallist, George Bovell III, will be going for what is likely his last shot at Olympic gold when the London Games get underway on Friday.

At 29 years old, Bovell is registered to compete in three events including the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke.

The 50m freestyle is expected to be his best shot at a medal as it was in 2008.

In an interview earlier this year, the former Auburn University swimmer revealed that he was placing emphasis on improving his technique for the 50m freestyle.

“I’m really training hard for the 50m free. It’s my event and I love to compete in it. Even though the programmes focus a lot on the physical aspect of training, the 50m obviously has a lot to do with speed. This is a great part of the 50m technique I must perfect in order to medal at the London Games,” he explained.

Bovell’s presence at the Olympics was not written in stone 11 months ago as he was involved in a vehicular accident on August 19 which kept him sidelined for several months.

The swimmer crashed his BMW car into a truck on his way to Mayaro and was diagnosed with a concussion. He was forced to curtail training as any physical activity could have triggered a stroke.

But TT’s first Olympian to win a swim medal has now completely recovered and is ready to splash against the best in the world.

Bovell has been in good form of late, grabbing two gold medals at the Canada Cup two weeks ago. The three-time Olympian created waves at the Montreal Olympic Park 50m pool, touching the wall first in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke while earning bronze in the 100m freestyle.

At the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invitational Meet in Texas last month in the 50m freestyle, the TT athlete touched the wall in a time of 22.11 seconds to earn gold and continue his excellent build-up towards the Games. He took the bronze in the 100m freestyle (49.84) and 100m backstroke (56.06).

In April, the former TT Sportsman of the Year earned silver in the 50m free at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in 21.89 while taking the 100m freestyle ‘C’ final in a time of 49.94.

Bovell is currently being coached by Minister of Sport Anil Roberts who is already in England with the TT swimmer.

Earlier this year, the local athlete credited Roberts for a lot of the strides he has made.

“Training with Anil has made key advancements in my development. But sometimes training by yourself does become a bit stagnant and you tend to feel alone. Swimming and training with top world athletes at these camps make me want to push myself further. I can also see where some swimmers are currently at, and compare them to my present form.

These swimmers are also Olympic-bound athletes and the atmosphere proves to be very beneficial to me.

It’s a very healthy environment for me to be in. I always make the most of my time at these camps and the results are showing,” he declared.

Yep. Actually it's his 4th Olympics (he was in Sydney as well). He probably doesn't want to expend too much energy and effort into the 100m free where he's not a contender. The 50m field is very tough so he'll likely have to go hard in the heats and semis to make the finals. The good thing is that he has a full 24 hours after the semis till the finals if he makes it that far.

George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago qualified fastest in the 50 free, with defending champion Cesar Cielo of Brazil right behind.

Bovell touched in 21.77 seconds to win the sixth of eight heats in swimming's glamour event. The 29-year-old four-time Olympian is solely focused on the 50 at these games after winning his country's first swimming medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 200 individual medley. The former Auburn swimmer once owned the 200 IM world record.
