Monterrey to open Champions League

NEW YORK - Two-time defending champion Monterrey will open the CONCACAF Champions League at home against Chorrillo of Panama on July 31, while Herediano of Costa Rica will host Real Salt Lake.

The complete group schedule announced Friday has Mexican Clausura champion and last-season's Champions League runner-up Santos Laguna beginning its schedule in the second full week of play, opening at home against Aguila of El Salvador on August 21.

Toronto FC will face Santos in a rematch of their semifinal series on August 28 at BMO Field and then again in Torreon, Mexico, in the final week on October 24.

The Group Stage will conclude a day later with Chivas de Guadalajara facing Xelaju of Guatemala, and Isidro Metapan of El Salvador against the LA Galaxy.

Unlike in the first four years, the Champions League has been reformatted this season with eight groups of three teams each instead of four, four-team groups. Only the group winners will advance to the knockout quarterfinals.

Densill, Guerra unavailable for Caledonia CCL history.
ttproleague.com.

As Caledonia AIA heads into its history making appearances of the CONCACAF Champions’ League Group stage next month, head coach Jamaal Shabazz’s roster stands without midfielders Densill Theobald, Ataullah Guerra and Akim Armstrong.

Guerra and Armstrong are still out recovering from knee cartilage injuries, while the 29 year old Theobald is said to be pursuing options abroad.

“He (Theobald) is looking at a couple options abroad,” said Shabazz.

“He is Cale’ when he is around and will always be our marquee player. But as of this moment he will not be available for us in the CONCACAF Champions’ League.”

Theobald returned to Trinidad in May following a successful one year stint in the Indian League by helping Dempo SC to the Championship.

“We have played an entire season without him and we have done well,” continued the Caledonia coach. “But if he is available, he is always a plus to the group. While he is here, he helps with advice, with his presence and his whole personality.”

Armstrong, who picked up his injury back in October and Guerra in March of this year, both missed Caledonia’s triumph in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship which was the qualifying tournament for the CONCACAF Champions’ League.

Shabazz was delighted however to announce last week that defender Aubrey David has joined his team from T&TEC FC.

Caledonia travels to the United States against Seattle Sounders on Thursday 2 August in their opening Group match of the CCL. CD Marathon of Honduras is the third team of the group in which just one team advances after the home and away series.

Big squad. Selection problems? A good problem to have.

Ah see Jerrel Britto is in the squad. Not hearing much about him these days. He still performing at a high level? Is his agent trying to get him trials at lesser known clubs since it appears his stints at better known clubs for whatever reason didn't seem to pan out?

Well we are all behind Connection and wish them great success. They can go all the way.

CONCACAF, FOX International Channels Latin America ink CCL broadcast agreement.
CONCACAF.COM

CONCACAF announced today that it has signed a five-year agreement with Fox International Channels Latin America to broadcast the CONCACAF Champions League.

The deal starts with the 2012-13 championship commencing on July 31 and gives FOX Sports exclusive rights in Latin America, including both Pay TV and the digital platforms throughout the region. Additionally, in Mexico and South America, FOX Sports will have total exclusivity as the rights in these territories also include Free TV.

"Our agreement with Fox International Channels Latin America puts the CONCACAF Champions League in perfect position to grow and fans throughout the region will be able to enjoy the competition like never before,"said CONCACAF President, Jeffrey Webb."With Fox's many broadcast platforms and technologies, the Champions League will be presented in ways the fans want and expect."

FOX Sports will broadcast more than 40 games live and delayed through its wide multimedia platform that consists of FOX Sports, FOX Sports+, their HD versions and FoxSportsla.com. It will also provide enhanced coverage on its shows such as Central FOX and La Última Palabra (The Last Word), and through a weekly CONCACAF Champions League highlight show.

"We're very pleased with this new agreement and relationship with CONCACAF," said Carlos Martinez, President of Fox International Channels Latin America."We are confident that we'll turn this tournament into a favorite and make it one of the strongest in the region, leveraging FOX Sports wide reach and the synergies of our entertainment, lifestyle and factual channels in Latin America, as we have already done with other Latin American and European events."

The CONCACAF Champions League, inaugurated in the 2008-09 season, is the confederation's annual club championship. It features 24 teams from each of CONCACAF's three sub-regions -- North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Atlante won the inaugural title in 2009, beating fellow Mexican side Cruz Azul 2-0 on aggregate in the two-leg final. A year later, another Mexican club, Pachuca, defeated Cruz Azul for the crown on the away-goals rule. Monterrey has captured the last two editions, overcoming the USA's Real Salt Lake (2011) and fellow Mexican club Santos (2012) 3-2 on aggregate on both occasions.

The winner of the CONCACAF Champions League qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

'Cali' leave for Champions League
T&T Express Reports.

Caribbean club champions Caledonia AIA leave Trinidad and Tobago for the US today, where they will kick off their CONCACAF Champions League campaign against MLS club Seattle Sounders on Thursday.

The Caledonia squad is captained by veteran midfielder Stephan David, and includes players with international experience such as defender Radanfah Abu Bakr, goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel and striker Jamal Gay. Caledonia technical director Jamaal Shabazz sees his team's Champions League debut as a "major step" in the club's 34-year history.

"This is a big moment for Caledonia and by extension the people of Morvant/Laventille," Shabazz said before the team's departure. "Seattle has the biggest attendance in the MLS [and] we want to do well on this stage."

Caledonia have suffered a big blow with the loss of prolific striker Devorn Jorsling and midfielder Ataulla Guerra. Jorsling has returned to Defence Force FC after last season's loan spell, and Guerra is currently recovering after surgery.

Caledonia squad: Glenroy Samuel, Colin Edwards (goalkeepers); Radanfah Abu Bakr, Nuru Muhammad, Aquil Selby, Kemron Purcell, Walter Moore, Colin Nelson, Aubrey David (defenders); Kareem Joseph, Stephan David (capt), Keyon Edwards, Cornelius Stewart, Nathan Lewis, Abdallah Phillips,Trayon Bobb (midfielders); Jamal Gay, Sheldon Holder, Trevin Cesar, Conrad Smith (forwards).

Technical Team - Ricarda Nelson (team administrator), Steve Frederick (manager), Jerry Moe (coach), Donna Wickham (physio).

Wonder what made Jorsling leave AIA just as they created too-good-to-be-true history & qualified for CONCACAF. That would be a very good platform for his career. Anyway, there were probably other juicy inducements for him to go back to his roots at DF.

Looking forward to thursday's game. Hol' it dong AIA. History in the making. Super sub Caesar in the second half.

Sounders in need of intel on Caledonia

Sounders in need of intel on Caledonia
By Don Ruiz (Tacoma News Tribune)

Sounders FC rookie Cordell Cato doesn’t know much about Caledonia AIA even though he grew up in the club’s home country of Trinidad.

Neither does Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, even though Caledonia is his club’s opponent when it opens CONCACAF Champions League group play tonight at CenturyLink Field.

“They’re probably (the CCL opponent) that we’re going into the most blind because they are not in their season yet,” Schmid said. “They are in their preseason; they haven’t really played games. They’ve changed their roster, so they’ve got different personnel than they had. We’ve seen certain clips of past games that they’ve played, but a lot of those are with players that aren’t on the team right now. So we’re in the midst of gathering information.”

In that quest, the Sounders have turned to some of the same resources available to casual fans: the Internet, YouTube, word of mouth.

One person who can’t provide much help is Cato, a 20-year-old who joined the Sounders from Carenage, Trinidad, and played for a pair of clubs there: Defence Force FC and San Juan Jabloteh.

“They’re from my homeland,” he said. “I really don’t know much about them – just a couple of players on their team. They did win some of the cups in the local league back home, so that’s about it.”

Caledonia qualified for its first Champions League appearance by winning the 2012 Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup. This year, it won three out of five domestic titles: the First Citizens Cup, the FA Trophy and the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield.

The club was founded in 1979 in the city of Malabar. It won the Trinidad and Tobago Cup in 2008.

“(In Trinidad) the main thing is you try to keep the ball, you try to pass the ball, maintain possession and build from there,” Cato said. “Definitely, they’re going to try that. As I said, I don’t know much about the team. They’re just from my home, but I’m going to be as new to the team as everybody else.”

One thing the Sounders know for sure is that every game in group play has heightened importance in this competition. Under a reworked format, the 2012-13 CCL begins with eight three-team groups, with each club playing the other home and away. After those four games, only the top finisher in each group will move through to the quarterfinals.

This is the Sounders’ third CCL appearance. In their first try, they didn’t get out of group stage. Last season, they made it to the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by Santos Laguna of Mexico.

“If you look at last year … certainly the win at home was a good confidence-booster for us, and the game down there was a big learning experience for us as well,” Schmid said. “But if we could have gotten past that game, matched up with Toronto, gotten to the final, that would have been a huge thing for our club. So this is the beginning of that journey, and being recognized in our region is very important for our league as well.”

ADDED TIME

Honduran midfielder Mario Martinez will join the Sounders on loan from Real España. Martinez, 23, is playing for Honduras in the ongoing London Olympics. He also participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He will join the Sounders after the Olympics and will be added to the roster pending receipt of his P-1 visa. … Sounders Women defender Stephanie Cox of Gig Harbor will join the University of Puget Sound women’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant. Cox, who has 81 caps with the U.S. national team, said the announcement does not indicate an end to her playing career.

SOUNDERS GAMEDAY

CALEDONIA AIA (TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) AT SOUNDERS FC (USA)

7 p.m., CenturyLink Field

TV: Fox Soccer. RADIO: 97.3-FM, 99.3-FM (Spanish)

Each team will play the other two in the group, home and away, with the eight group winners advancing to the knockout round. … This is Caledonia’s first CCL appearance in its 32-year history. This is Seattle’s third CCL appearance in its four-year history. The Sounders did not advance out of group play in 2010-11, and were eliminated by Santos Laguna of Mexico in the 2011-12 quarterfinals. … Seattle qualified by winning the 2011 U.S. Open Cup; Caledonia by winning the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup. … Caledonia is led by Jamal Gay, a 6-foot-2 forward, who scored seven goals in league play last season. Goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel played for the Trinidad U-23 team. Center backs Nuru Abdullah Muhammad and Radanfah Abu Bakr return from the club that went 12-7-2 in the 2011-12 TT Pro League, scoring 34 goals. The club is coached by Jamaal Shabazz, who also coaches the Guyanese national team. … Plenty of tickets are available.

CCL: Union's Daniel says Caledonia will run with Seattle

CHESTER, Pa. – As a second-year player on the Philadelphia Union, Keon Daniel has seen the Seattle Sounders enough to know how good of a team they are.

But the Trinidad and Tobago International also knows a thing or two about Seattle’s first opponent in CONCACAF Champions League play, Caledonia AIA. After all, he played with the Trinidadian club for three seasons before coming to MLS.

Seattle host Caledonia on Thursday (10 pm ET, Fox Soccer), before facing them in Trinidad and Tobago on Aug. 30.

“I think they will match them up because back home, we play the same style as Seattle plays,” Daniel told MLSsoccer.com. “And most of the guys that play for Caledonia, they were on the [T&T] national team, so they have some experience. They watch Seattle play a lot back home. I think they’re going to do well.”

According to Daniel, Caledonia – who qualified for this year’s Champions League by capturing their first-ever Caribbean Football Union Club Championship – like to string together lots of passes and try to control possession.

That style suited the midfielder very well when he played for them from 2008-10, before going to the Puerto Rico Islanders and then signing with the Philadelphia Union in time for the 2011 MLS season.

“They were a great team to play for,” said Daniel, who’s made 20 career starts for the Union, logging two goals and two assists. “The type of player I am, I like to keep the ball a lot. And that’s a team that loves to keep the ball on the ground and play.”

Daniel doesn’t know everyone on this Caledonia squad but is still familiar with some of their players, including his cousin, the speedy Trevin Caesar. And he’s confident that if they work hard, they can make a CCL run and represent his home country well.

“Seattle’s tough,” Daniel said. “But that’s what football is about. It’s about the toughness and it’s about getting it done.”

Connection eager for Xelaju clash
ttproleague.com

Digicel Pro League Champions DIRECTV W Connection is "raring to go" against Xelaju MC of Guatemala in their opening 2012-2013 CONCACAF Champions' League fixture at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium from 8pm on Thursday.

“Our team is doing well,” said W Connection assistant coach Earl Jean.

“It's a big challenge for our players and I think they are raring to go. I think on Thursday we would try to get a good result.

“We have seen (Xelaju). We know the type of football played by Central American teams. We have watched videos of them over and over in Tobago (during a one week camp) and we had more footage of them (Tuesday).

“We know what to expect and once our team goes out and give what we are capable of, then we stand a chance. I think any team in the (TT Pro) League, especially the top four, can compete with any Central and North American team. It all depends on the day and how the players come out, because if we give a hundred percent then there is the possibility that we can win.”

Connection’s preparation plans struck a hurdle when a planned trio to Colombia dissolved because of unavailable flights, and resorted to a one-week camp in Tobago last week.

“Preparations could have been a little better,” added Jean. “We also had a few challenges because the Caribbean Football Union tournament was a little late and we didn't get enough time to rest properly following our domestic season. But in saying that, the president (David John-Williams) and the club worked tremendously hard to give us what we wanted to prepare. We had a few practice games in Tobago, so we have done the best preparations under the circumstances.”

Trinidad & Tobago U23 and Connection striker Shahdon Winchester, one of the team's many CONCACAF Champions' League debutants, seems unfazed by the challenge ahead.

“Everyone is excited for the game (against Xelaju),” said the 20 year old. “We are preparing mentally and physically and coming to give a hundred percent.”

Winchester even looks ahead to add, “I think there is a great possibility that we can advance out of the group stage. W Connection is like the Caribbean, and we want to put Trinidad and Tobago back on the map.”

“I think it’s the most important game for us, for the year [against Xelaju on Thursday],” said team captain and goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams.

“It is something we have been working on for the past year. The main objective last season was to win the (Digicel Pro) League and get into the Caribbean Club Championship and to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions' League. We see it as important because we want to play at the highest level and this is the highest level of (club) football [in Concacaf].

“We also see it extremely important in the development of the younger players. Myself being one of the younger players the last time we played at the Champions' League, I gained tremendous experience in the competition and now it’s a matter of me passing on that experience and helping the team grow.”

The T&T international goalie is also optimistic about advancing past the group stage.

“I think it’s a bit easier with just four games, two home and two away. We want to take the home games as seriously and start with a victory. However we have to take each and every game one step at a time. And our focus now is on Xelaju,”

Connection, Xelaju and Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara are in Group 8, while fellow TT Pro League outfit Caledonia AIA, United States Seattle Sounders and Honduran club CD Marathon are in Group 4. Only the winner of each of the eight groups, 1-8, advances to the quarter-final round following the home and away series.

“The good thing about football is that the underdogs stand a chance and that's the most important thing,” explained assistant coach Jean, a former Connection and St. Lucian international. “And if we are (the underdogs), maybe it’s a good thing.

“I always say that we are a team that is quietly confident about our ability. We know that we have been working hard over the years. We know the tactical information of the technical director Stuart Charles Fevrier and we believe in what he’s doing.

We have played Chivas before so it’s not that we don't know about them. I think they have been through a transition and we have done the same thing. We have a younger team and I think anything can happen on the day. We believe in ourselves. We have a few players coming and we believe we can get the points needed to get to the next stage.”

Why they does always say Shahdon Winchester is a striker !

He might be a center forward.

Good luck to W Connection.
