Pfeiffer University senior Nathan Regis has been invited to the 2017 adidas MLS Combine in Los Angeles from January 8-12. He will be part of Team Chaos (orange).

What's going on with Nathan? His teammate, Santi Moar signed with Bethlehem Steel (because of the business relationship between the Philadelphia Union and Bethlehem Steel). What gives with Nathan?

On occasion I get to answer my own question. Nathan is being evaluated by Charlotte this week (USL). The process started about a hour ago.

I think Charlotte submitted to be an MLS expansion team in 2018 so if he gets his foot in the door there and perform, it can turn out like it did in Orlando with Molino.

Nathan Regis tries out for a roster spot with Charlotte Independence
By Ashley Mahoney (The Charlotte Post)

Nathan Regis is keeping it local.

The two-time NCAA Division II national player of the year went undrafted by an MLS team, but has found a temporary home on trial with the Charlotte Independence, whose combine he participated in December.

Charlotte opened preseason training today, but has yet to announce a striker among the 16-man roster, according to general manager Tom Engstrom. Last season’s starting striker, Brian Brown, signed with USL rival Reno.

“We all know the MLS draft didn’t go exactly as I expected, but I’m positive,” Regis, a former Pfeiffer striker said. “I’m going to work hard here. North Carolina will always be home to me. I really wish to play here. I just want to keep it local.”

Said Independence coach Mike Jeffries: “It’s nice for us to be able to bring some of the top local guys in and get a look.”

Conference Carolinas’ player of the year and conference tournament MVP for the last three seasons, Regis finished his senior season with 24 goals and 10 assists. He tallied 85 career goals at Pfeiffer.

“He’s eager, and he’s another big, strong player,” Charlotte defender Bilal Duckett said. “He’s somewhat of a Charlotte product as well, and he’s got a bit of coachability to him. You give him a pointer here, a pointer there, and he kind of tunes in and listens. He may push back, but big picture, at least as far as today goes. He listened, and he got it.”

Regis played in the PDL with the Charlotte Eagles in the summer of 2015, and spent last summer training with MLS clubs like Sporting Kansas City.

“Regis had so much success with Pfeiffer and had good PDL years,” Jeffries said. “He’s certainly a guy that makes sense to look at up front, and see where he’s at. I think it’s tough sometimes for those guys coming in, especially guys from smaller schools to stay sharp in the offseason,” because they aren’t playing as much.

Said defender Austin Yearwood, who was Regis’ Eagles teammate: “Regis is same old, same old. He’s a strong forward, athletic, holds the ball up and finishes chances.”

Said Duckett: “You want them to come out and show well and do well—earn their position. The same way that anybody else on the team has got to earn their position, whether they’ve got a contract or not.”

I remember 3 boys with surname Regis ane we used to play any sport when we meet up in Skinner Park, these boys were good at any sport,we would play cricket, basketball, football and they were excellent at anything they played,we were all about 14.That surname seems to have a great sporting culture even in England.

Unfortunately, nothing viable came from Nathan's trial period with Charlotte.

Midland-Odessa Socker, Nathan Regis, is playing for more
By Darby Brown (NewsWest9.com)

Midland-Odessa Sockers FC player Nathan Regis moved to America from Trinidad and Tobago in 2013 to play college soccer.

“Initially I was supposed to go to a division one school called Cal State Fullerton, but things didn't work out in terms of letting me know how many credits I had in order to be eligible for NCAA Division I. So that kinda fell through and I was able to contact a couple coaches who knew a couple of coaches and I landed at Pfeiffer University,” explained Regis.

During his four years at the D-II program in North Carolina, he scored 85 goals. Earning attention from MLS teams.

But after a knee injury, his soccer career came to a pause, until making his way to Midland.

An opportunity he owes to MOFC coach Luis Rincon.

But he says has another man to thank for his entire soccer career, his dad who he played pick-up games with at a young age.

“To even up the side we played on different teams and when I was going against him he played against me like he didn’t know me. That sorta taught me how to be tough and just brought out a love for the game that I can't explain,” said Regis.

Regis lost his father back in 2004, at the age of 12.

“My dad was driving his car and four assailants came and tried to take his car away from him and he fought back with them because it wasn't easy getting his car because he didn't give it away and so he tried to fight them with his hands and they shot him and killed him instantly,” said Regis.

Regis hopes to honor him with his play in Midland this summer, and someday when he accomplishes his ultimate goal of playing professionally.
