Ribery, Benzema face trial over underage escort

French international footballers Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema are to face trial for allegedly soliciting an underage prostitute, judicial sources said on Tuesday.

The footballers are among eight people that investigating magistrate Andre Dando has sent for trial as well as the Zaman Cafe on Paris' Champs Elysees where the meetings with Zahia Dehar took place.

Some of the defendants will be prosecuted for "aggravated pimping", according to judicial papers.

Paris prosecutors had in 2011 requested that the case against the two French football stars be dropped on the grounds that they did not know that Dehar was aged under 18.

Dehar, now 20, told police she was paid for sex with Ribery in 2009 and Benzema in 2008 when she was aged 16. She claimed that both players were not aware that she was under age.

The affair broke during 2010 and tarnished the image of the France football team just weeks ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.

Ribery, 29, plays for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and 24-year-old Benzema with Primera Liga giants Real Madrid.

Both face a possible three years in prison or a 45,000 euro fine.

Ribery and Benzema have been named in France coach Didier Deschamps' squad for the friendly game against Uruguay in the northern city of Le Havre on Wednesday.

But Deschamps refused to comment on the situation, calling it "a delicate subject".

"I won't be commenting on it as it has a private dimension. It's in the court's hands. It will not change my demands about players' behaviour on and off the pitch with respect to the French team," he told reporters.

"I am concentrating on the essentials so tomorrow (Wednesday) we see a France team that wants to go forward and wants to win."

Benzema detained by French police
Deustche Welle

The French international arrived at a police station near Paris and was detained, according to a source close to the investigation. Benzema is being held in connection with blackmail over a sextape.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was held in custody on Wednesday in connection with blackmail over a sextape featuring fellow French player Mathieu Valbuena, report the AFP news agency.

According to the legal sources, 27-year-old Benzema mentioned the sextape to Valbuena while at a training camp for the French national team.

French investigators are examining whether Benzema was teasing Valbuena or if it was used as blackmail by the suspects.

Last month, former French international footballer Djibril Cisse was interveiwed by French police following a raid on his home, but was quickly released.

Three suspected blackmailers were charged and held in custody in October. The case was open in July and carries a potential prison sentence of five years.

The French striker is said to be staying overnight in custody.

Former Bayern Munich boss Hoeness seeks early release
Deutsche Welle

Former Bayern President Uli Hoeness has applied for early release from prison. If his application is approved, he could be out of jail as early as March, after serving more than half of his sentence.

A member of Uli Hoeness' legal team confirmed on Tuesday that the former Bayern Munich president had applied for an early release after having served 18 months of his sentence for a tax evasion conviction.

The 63-year old Hoeness, widely credited for helping build Bayern into one of the world's most successful brands, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison in March 2014 for evading about 28.5 million euros ($31.3 million) worth of tax. He began serving his sentence three months later.

Hoeness confessed to evading taxes on income earned in a secret Swiss bank account and hoped for leniency. But the judge ruled that Hoeness' voluntary disclosure had been incomplete and thus did not meet a requirement to be granted amnesty under laws designed to encourage tax evaders to come clean.

Hoeness' lawyer, Michael Nesselhauf, told the DPA news agency on Tuesday that an application for early release had been made to the relevant authorities. If this is approved, Hoeness could be out of jail in March 2016, after serving more than half of his prison sentence.

Hoeness has been on day release since the start of the year under a parole system which requires him to return to jail every evening. He has been working with one of Bayern's youth teams and according to local media his application should be helped by the fact that he has secured a job with the reigning Bundesliga champions.

The former Bayern player and West Germany international was general manager of Bayern and then president from 2009 to 2014 . The club's earnings soared under his stewardship, which lasted 35 years in various posts. With more than 200,000 members, it is one of the world's biggest football clubs.

It is not clear whether he could seek to return to the post of president at a future date.

Benzema 'admits role' in sex tape blackmail plot
Thelocal.fr

"Karim Benzema has admitted speaking to Valbuena at the request of a childhood friend, who was approached by three blackmailers who were in possession of the sex tape," the source close to the investigation said.

Benzema, 27, was driven away from the police station in Versailles outside Paris in a police car with tinted windows, AFP journalists saw.

"Karim Benzema has been taken to the court to appear before an investigating magistrate who will decide what happens next in the procedure," the prosecutor's office said.

According to BFM TV, French prosecutors have asked that Benzema be charged and placed under judicial control.

Investigators are trying to determine the extent of Benzema's involvement in an attempt to extort money from Valbuena after a sex tape found its way into the hands of suspected blackmailers.

According to an investigation source, Benzema mentioned the video to Valbuena when the French national team met for training last month, ahead of matches against Armenia and Denmark.

Benzema's lawyer said he had played "no part" in the plot and was keen to clear his name.

"Karim Benzema has absolutely nothing to hide," said lawyer Sylvain Cormier.

"He is happy, satisfied even, to finally put an end to this tiresome controversy."

The centre-forward is a key part of the French national team with 27 goals in 81 appearances and is one of the biggest names in the star-studded Real Madrid squad.

Speculation has begun to swirl in the French media about how Benzema's involvement in the blackmail could affect his place on the national side. L'Express newspaper noted that Didier Deschamps, the manager of the French national football team, has stressed in recent years the importance of his players having "impeccable attitudes".

Past controversies

It is not the first time the French striker has been embroiled in a police investigation.

In 2009, he and teammate Franck Ribery were accused of sleeping with under-age prostitute Zahia Dehar.

Both men were finally cleared of wrongdoing five years later, by which time Dehar had become a reality TV star and fashion designer.

The blackmail case began in June, when Valbuena lodged a complaint with police after being telephoned by an unknown person who said he had the sex tape.

The caller did not specify a sum of money but said they should come to an arrangement.

Police then took over, posing as Valbuena's business associate in later calls with the blackmailers, who threatened to release the video ahead of the 2016 European Championship, which France is hosting.

The investigation led them to three men, including one who was a close member of Valbuena's entourage and who had direct access to the footballer's phone containing the sex tape.

Two of the group are also said to have ties to Djibril Cisse, another French international and a former teammate of Valbuena at Marseilles, and successfully made him pay up for a sex tape in 2008.

The group used Cisse to authenticate the sex tape, the judicial source said, leading him to warn Valbuena that a video was circulating.

Cisse was detained for questioning last month but was quickly released without charge.

In a bid to speed up the negotiations, the blackmailers contacted a friend of Benzema's brother in Lyon, a man already known to police.

The friend was detained in relation to the blackmail case on Monday and was due to appear before a judge later Wednesday in Lyon.

Blackmail carries a potential prison sentence of five years.

Benzema, 27, is one of Real Madrid's star players alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale and has a good reputation with managers and fellow players.

He started his career in his home town of Lyon, the club Valbuela joined this summer.

On Thursday France national coach Didier Deschamps is due to name his squad for upcoming internationals against Germany and England. The names of both Benzema and Valbuena would normally be expected to appear on the list.
