Tigers held to first SSFL draw in over a year
By Andrew Gioannetti (T&T Guardian)

Title favourites, St Anthony’s College finally had its 100 percent winning streak from the beginning of last season come to an end after being held to a goalless draw away to Diego Martin North Secondary in the BGTT Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) North Zone match day two, yesterday. The match was staged at the Diego Martin Secondary Ground, at the same time as the two other North Zone fixtures, which resulted in upsets. The Westmoorings “Tigers” which has a new-look line-up with only a handful of players remaining from last year’s successful campaign, failed to break down the newly-promoted Diego Martin North’s defence, which lost 1-0 to St Mary’s College, on Saturday. Meanwhile, in another upset, St Mary’s College, despite dominating most of the encounter, suffered a 1-0 defeat away to rivals Fatima College, at the Fatima College Ground, Mucurapo, while Trinity College let a lead slip away on two occasions as East Mucurapo fought back to draw 2-2.

Fatima defender Keon Matthews scored with less than 15 minutes remaining to sink St Mary’s College. St Mary’s started the much more dominant team in open play and may have created more opportunities in the first half had it not been for a strong performance from Fatima’s defence led by Matthews. Both Fatima and St Mary’s found the back on the net in the second half, but both efforts were blown off by the referee for offsides. Subsequently, Fatima took a lead against the run of play when Matthews, who played the role as temporary captain, bounced on a ball which fell to his feet with a clinical low driven effort which made its way into the far post. St Mary’s never recovered and were left to rue a result which kept it on three points from two matches. Fatima, meanwhile, made amends for its 2-0 opening day defeat to East Mucurapo. Trinity, which was on a bye on the opening day, failed to capitalise on its two leads against the Mucurapo team, which finished the 2011 North Zone league, runner-up to St Anthony’s College.

Henry fires Pres to South top
National Under-20 striker Shackiel scored two second-half goals to lead Presentation College of San Fernando to a come-from-behind 3-1 triumph over Princes Town in their South Zone at Princes Town. After a goalless first 45 minutes, Kiel Ribeiro opened the scoring for the hosts only for Henry to tie up the score in the 67th minute. Both teams looked headed for a share of the points before Henry netted in the 89th minute while Jivaughn Dimsoy added a third item on the stroke of full time to seal its second win from as many matches and maximum six points, three ahead defending champions Shiva Boys, Pleasantville and Naparima.
In the two other zonal matches, Russell Alfred netted twice in Pleasantville’s similar 3-1 win over Moruga at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella while Naparima held off St Benedict’s 2-1 at La Romaine for its first points of the season.

Dial Dynamos slam Toco 6-0
Kern Roberts and Jomal Francis scored braces on either side of the half as reigning East Zone champions, Arima North “Dial Dynamos,” slammed host Toco 6-0 to surge to the top of the standings. Roberts found the target in the 25th and 30th minute for a 2-0 cushion at the half before Francis (56th, 65th), national Under-20 midfielder Marcus Gomez (62nd) and Shilo Johnson (80th) completed the scoring to push their team to four points. In the “Battle of El Dorado,” Shaquille Bertrand registered a second-half hat-trick to lead El Do East past neighbours, El Do West 4-2. Bertrand got his goals in the 52nd, 66th and 78th minutes after teammate Marc Williams had opened the scoring in the sixth minute. For El Do West, Aaron Auguste had tied up the score in the 33rd minute while Anthony Allsop briefly put his team ahead in the 46th minute before Bertrand took charge and led his team to all three points and a share of the lead with reigning champions Arima North. The other match between St Augustine and Trinity East was not played.

St Francois Girls’ aiming for clean sweep in 2012.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Despite loss of five top players...

Zonal league champion and Trinidad InterCol finalist St Francois Girls’ College will be back out in full force in search of a clean sweep of titles, as it opens its account in the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) Girls Championship North Zone against Malick Secondary, today.

The match which will be staged at President’s Ground, St Ann’s, along with the two other North Zone matches, and the East Zone opening round fixtures.

All six matches will commence at 3.45 pm. Despite some changes to the first team line-up, Jason Spence, who heads into his fifth season as St Francois coach, said that his ambition for the team was not only to retain the titles which were won last season but to also seal the National InterCol title.

St Francois lost 3-1 to Holy Name Convent at the beginning of last season, but all three points were subsequently awarded to St Francois, after it was revealed that Holy Name fielded an unregistered team.

From there, St Francois went on to dominate the North Zone without losing a match. The Belmont-based school then sealed the North-East InterCol title with a penalty-kick win over El Dorado East Secondary, and went all the way to the Trinidad InterCol final, where it lost 4-3 on penalty kicks to South Zone’s Vessigny Secondary, after regulation time ended 1-1.

St Francois also reached the “Big-Four” competition final but lost 2-1 to El Dorado despite a late attacking surge from its talented midfielders and forwards. The team has since lost several first team players in Shannon Archer, Dhaakira Solomon, Monique Gomez and Kelly Cooper.

And it will also have to do without the services of last season’s top scorer Diamond Small, who has taken a year off to focus on her studies.

Spence, who also leads Women’s League Football (Wolf) club North East Stars said he still believes that the school has the ability to go all the way to the National InterCol final. “Despite the loss of the several first team players, we still have some promising ones who can take the team forward.

“Some of the players from the Under-15 division will be coming in so we will give them the exposure for the coming years,” said Spence.

He added, “We continue to take it one step at a time. In order to progress as the younger players develop, they will move from the school system to the women’s league, and success at this stage is a good way to begin.”

Defender Chelsea Marie Spence, who also played for Rangers during the SSFL’s off-season, will return to captain St Francois for another year.

Midfielders Asha Jones and Astride Joseph, goalkeeper Darya Rodriguez and striker Della Joseph, all of whom had an impressive season last year, are among some of the key players set to return to the line-up.

The two other matches in the North Zone will see Providence challenging Tranquillity at St Anthony’s College Ground, Westmoorings, while St Joseph’s Convent hosts Holy Name Convent at the school’s ground in Federation Park.

The East Zone standout team of last season, El Dorado East, will face a challenge from Toco Secondary at El Dorado Ground. Arima North and St George’s College will meet, while St Augustine also hosts Bishop Anstey East at its St Augustine ground.

The two other zones, South and Tobago, which were scheduled to kick off today, have been postponed to a later date to be announced, due to the two days of “rest and reflection” called on by the T&T Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) for the nation’s teachers today and tomorrow.

Commenting on the postponement of the two zones, Spence (Jason), who is also a member of the North Zone committee said that he failed to understand why two zones are able to kick off and two others postponed, especially as the matter was an issue relating to teachers and not to football and coaches. “I don’t understand why the other zones will not be played.

There’s no difference between the North and East and the South and Tobago zones. Therefore, I don’t see how two zones are affected and two aren’t,” said Spence.

St Augustine thrashes Bishop Anstey East 15-0.
T&T Guardian Reports.

St Augustine Secondary, zonal runner-up in the 2011 season, opened its account in the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools’ Football League, with a 15-0 whipping of newly promoted Bishop Anstey East, at its St Augustine ground, yesterday.

Chelsea Gibbs and Naomi Guerra scored four apiece, with Celeste Thomas sealing a hat-trick. Ariel Williams, Kandice Johnson, Portious Warren and Lauren Theodore, each scored a goal.

The perfect start saw St Augustine lead the table after day one on goal difference over Arima North which edged St George’s College 2-1.

Arima got its goals via a second half double from Shantal Yearwood, cancelling Khadejah de Freitas’ first half effort for St George’s. North Zone champions and Trinidad InterCol finalist, St Francois Girls’ College, started the season with a perfect three points without having to kick a ball.

Malick failed to appear for the match, handing St Francois a win by default. Providence, meanwhile, was made to work for its victory, but did so with a 1-0 triumph over Tranquility Secondary, at St Anthony’s Ground. Jazz Singh scored the winning goal midway through the first half.

Leaders 'Pres' Sando, St Benedict's clash in South.
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

Presentation College San Fernando will look to continue their perfect start to the 2012 BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) season against South Zone opponents St Benedict's College from five p.m. today at Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

So far in the League, "Pres" Sando are the only team to have played two matches and won both. They are on six points, and ahead of four teams with three points each: defending champions Shiva boys Hindu College, who are playing their second match after a bye in the last round, St Benedict's, Pleasantville Secondary and Naparima College.

St Benedict's won their opener against Moruga Secondary handsomely, but stuttered against Naparima to lose 2-1 on Wednesday. The "La Romaine Lions" will be hoping they can stop "Pres" today.

Naparima also have a tough fixture, against Shiva Boys at Penal, after losing their opener 3-0 to "Pres" Sando. And Pleasantville lock horns with Princes Town West Secondary in the first match of a Manny Ramjohn Stadium double-header. That match starts at three p.m. Moruga are on a bye.

The Tobago Zone will have their first encounter for the season when Speyside Secondary and Scarborough Secondary clash at Charlotteville, after last weekend's opening round was postponed due to venue unavailability.

The other Tobago fixture, between Roxborough and Mason Hall, has also been postponed due to issues with Roxborough's uniforms.

Over in the North, East Mucurapo and St Anthony's College will look to earn an advantage atop the table, as both teams are locked on points and goal difference, and separated by just one goal.

Mucurapo "host" St Mary's College at Fatima College's Mucurapo Road Ground, while St Anthony's play Trinity College at their Westmoorings "lair".

There will also be a full slate of matches in the Central and East Zones.

Tigers rebound with 2-0 victory.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Zonal and InterCol champion St Anthony’s College, rebounded from its goalless draw in the last outing by securing all three points with a 2-0 victory over Trinity College, at St Anthony’s Ground, Westmoorings, yesterday.

A goal each in the opening five minutes and in the dying seconds from Xavier Rajpaul and Kadeem Corbin, respectively, put St Anthony’s by itself on top of the seven-team standings with seven points from three matches.

It was only three days prior that St Anthony’s had its 20-match winning streak come to an end after being held to a goalless draw by newly-promoted Diego Martin North Secondary.

The “Tigers” may have had company at the top had it not been for a 0-0 stalemate in the other match between St Mary’s College and East Mucurapo at Fatima Ground. The draw put Mucurapo on five points from three matches while St Mary’s went to four.

Fatima College also rebounded from its opening day loss to East Mucurapo with its second straight 1-0 win, this time over QRC. Reliable forward Arvin Prescod secured all three points with a first half strike, to put Fatima in second position with six points. Diego Martin North was on a bye.

Francois brace puts Arima on top

Jomal Francois scored a pair of goals as Arima North moved three points clear at the top of the East Zone with a 2-1 triumph over El Dorado West Secondary at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar. Francois fired Arima North in the lead as early as the third minute but Kerdel Chairman scored from the penalty-spot in the 33rd minute for both teams to go into the interval 1-1.

Five minutes into the second-half Francois netted his second of the match and eventual game winner as the “Dial Dynamos” improved to seven points from three matches, three clear of defending champions El Dorado East and San Juan North.

San Juan North used goals from Brent Sam and Andel Andrews to secure a 2-0 shut-out of Trinity East, at its Bourg Mulatresse Ground while host St Augustine Secondary needed a 90th minute own-goal to salvage a 1-1 with Toco, which went ahead through Kern Carabello in the 27th minute. It was a bitter ending for Toco whose Dwight Figaro suffered a broken leg during the contest.

Eneau, Holder leads Caps’ 8-1 mauling

Joshua Eneau and Shaquille Holder scored beaver-tricks, as Carapichaima followed up its 7-0 hammering of Tabaquite with an 8-1 come-from-behind mauling of Gasparillo at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre to stay perfect in the Central Zone.

Kemron Felix opened the scoring for Gasparillo in the tenth minute after which Carapichaima took charges led by Eneau, who netted in the 17th, 21st and 44th for a first-half hat-trick while Holder found the target in the 35th minute for a 4-1 lead at the half.

Holder then added three more in the second-half in the 54th, 78th and 80th, and Eneau, the other in the 58th to complete the scoring as Carapichaima pushed its points tally to maximum six points.

Presentation picked up its first win, 2-0 over Tabaquite with second-half goals from Suraj Ramcharan and Brandon Balladin to move into second with four points, the same as Chaguanas North which blanked Couva West 3-0 with David Maloney, Ainsley County and Deon O’Garro all on target.

Trinity College East claims victimization.
SSFL Scorce.

Trinity College East (TCE) has applied to the Court of Arbitration to appeal a decision made against the Secondary School Football League (SSFL).

The President of the league apparently had a personal vendetta against the Principal of Trinity College East.

The league is stopping TCE from playing their form 6 players claiming that TCE and the form 6 department come from 2 different institutions.

The game against San Juan yesterday was played under protest and without the form 6 students. TCE lost the game 2-0.

Please help TCE to clear up this issue by investigating and exposing the SSFL. The league is denying the boys a legal right to represent their school.

Debe, St Francois show way in girls SSFL.
T&T Guardian Reports.

After being made to wait an extra match-day to get off the mark, reigning South Zone champions Debe Secondary did so in style with a 4-1 come-from-beind win over Fyzabad Secondary, as both teams opened their campaigns in the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) Girls’ Championship on Sunday.

Shanelle Arjoon and Kayla Taylor, both of whom represented T&T at the youth level, each scored a double. Fyzabad opened with a converted penalty from Denecia Prince in the 26th minute, but her effort was soon cancelled out by Arjoon in the 30th as both teams finished the half locked at 1-1.

It was a different story in the second half as Taylor went on to score twice within the space of five minutes just after the hour mark, followed by an insurance goal in the 78th from Arjoon.

The result put Debe, which prepared for the season with a tour in the US, at the head of the six-team standings after one match, as both other fixtures failed to kick off.

Two fixtures were played in the north, meanwhile, as league champions and InterCol finalist St Francois Girls College also got off to a flyer with a 5-1 drubbing of Tranquility with a double from Asha Jones, and goals from Della Joseph, Samantha Kingston and Chelsea-Marie Spence.

Providence won its second straight match 1-0 to remain on top, while Malick failed to turn up for its second consecutive match. They were scheduled to take on St Joseph Convent.

In the East, Arima North whipped Bishops East 7-0 with Akiela Williams on target with four goals. Last year’s Big-Four finalist and zonal winner El Dorado East will also have to wait until midweek to get off the mark after its clash with St George’s was canceled due to poor marking on the pitch.

‘Tigers’ look to extend unbeaten run in Battle of the Saints.
By Andrew Gioannetti & Nigel Simon (Guardian).

St Anthony’s College, defending BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Zonal and National League champions will be looking to extend its 22-match unbeaten run dating back to the first day of last season, when it travels to Serpentine Road for a 3.45 pm clash with bitter rivals St Mary’s College in the first “battle of the Saints” this season.

Having won all 19 of its matches last year, en route to sweeping all four titles at stake, the “Westmooring Tigers” kicked off their zonal defence with a 2-1 win over Queen’s Royal College, followed by a 0-0 draw with promoted Diego Martin North Secondary which ended its winning streak at 21.

However, the Nigel Grosvenor-coached Tigers returned to their winning ways on Saturday with a 2-0 home win over Trinity College to lead with seven points and will be confident of extending their run against the “Saints,” who are fourth on the table with four points from three matches, one behind East Mucurapo and two adrift of second-placed Fatima College.

He acknowledged that today’s test against St Mary’s would be a much more competitive affair than last season. “Just like us, St Mary’s lost some of their best players, but I expect it to be a much more competitive fixture than last year. In any case, I will never count out CIC. I have full respect for the school and Jason (Edwards). Tradition carries the school a long way.

Their players play for the school and their discipline counts for a lot,” said Grosvenor. Grosvenor will have a full team with the exception of injured midfielder Savion Kirton, who has pulled out with a problematic hamstring.

He will be replaced by forward Shaquille Long, who will drift back into a deeper position, with another forward stepping into the line-up. So far this season, the “Saints” edged Diego Martin 1-0 but then went under to Fatima by the same margin before battling to a goalless draw with East Mucurapo in the last round.

Depending on the outcome of the “Battle of the Saints”, Fatima, which lost its opener to East Mucurapo 2-0 but rebounded with 1-0 wins over St Mary’s and QRC, and can go top of the table with a win at home to Diego Martin at Fatima Ground.

In the day’s other match, Trinity College welcomes cellar-placed QRC to Moka, Maraval with the Clint Marcelle-coached Royalians still in search of their first point. With East Zone leader, Arima North on a bye, joint second-placed teams, defending zonal champ El Dorado East and San Juan North, both on four points will have a chance to take the outright lead based on their results today.

The El Dorado East “Blue Thunder” which was on a bye last Wednesday travels to Trinity East College. San Juan North journeys further east for an interesting clash with Toco. In the zone’s other match, former champions St Augustine will be seeking its first win of the season in three matches away to El Dorado West.

Down South, leaders Presentation College of San Fernando led by striker Shackiel Henry is expected to pick up its fourth straight win to start the season when it plays away against cellar-placed Moruga, which is yet to pick up a point from two matches.

Defending champion Shiva Boys, second with six points from two matches, faces a tricky clash away to Princes Town while Naparima College entertains Pleasantville at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. The Central and Tobago Zones have a rest day today and will resume play on Saturday.

Trinity face 'El Do' under protest.
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

Trinity College East will play under protest, today, after being banned from using their Form Six footballers by the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).

The matter is set to go before arbitration, with the League expected to submit their documents to the arbitration panel today.

The SSFL denied Trinity's request to postpone their matches until the matter is resolved, and the Express understands that the school has decided against legal action to have their matches postponed until a ruling is given.

Trinity played on Saturday and lost 2-0 to San Juan North Secondary without the use of their senior Form Six players, after they were handed a directive by the League to stop using the players.

They played their opening match with the players and won 2-0 over newcomers, El Dorado West Secondary. Their second match against St Augustine Secondary was postponed.

The issue came up after the SSFL ruled that Trinity's use of their Form Six footballers is illegal, due to the school's unique Form Six situation. The school is jointly-housed with neighbouring Bishop Anstey High School East, and Form Six is shared between the two.

Trinity's football manager, Nigel Ojagir said the team has been affected, with their more experienced players sidelined.

"The core of the team was Form Six; the team was built around four starters," Ojagir said. "With this thing now, it affected the experience in the middle of the field."

Contacted yesterday, Azaad Khan, SSFL general secretary, declined comment on the matter, with arbitration pending. He did, however, say that the League's position is that the A' Level school is not a part of Trinity East.

Trinity host El Dorado East Secondary at their Trincity compound today from 3.45 p.m.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

'Tigers' cruise, 'Pres' win big.
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

National champions St Anthony's College continued their good run of form yesterday, cruising past St Mary's College 3-0 in BGTT/FCB Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) North Zone action at the "Saints'" Serpentine Road, St Clair ground.

But Fatima College stayed close behind them, one point back in second, with their third straight victory after edging Diego Martin North 1-0 at Fatima's Mucurapo Road ground.

St Mary's put up a fight in the second half to give their supporters something to cheer, but by then the "Tigers" were three goals to the good.

Right winger Kiel Pierre started the scoring in the 12th minute for St Anthony's, while striker Adrian Millette doubled up just after half-time to ensure there was no way back into the match for the home team.

The match was won in midfield, where St Mary's yielded possession much too easily, and allowed their opponents the room to attack.

Pierre started things with some help from Xavier Rajpaul, whose dummy run to the right gave Pierre time in the penalty area to cut back to his favoured right foot and hammer in the Tigers' first.

St Mary's did not look likely to answer in the first half, but St Anthony's goalkeeper Jevon Sample did make an acrobatic save before half-time to maintain his team's advantage.

But Millette's double blow effectively confirmed the result for the defending North Zone champs. In just the second minute after the restart, he took on two defenders in a solo run. The tackle never came, and he picked his spot with a diagonal strike from the left, under the advancing Christian Attong in Saints goal.

Nine minutes later, the third and final item came, this time from a move started by Rajpaul in midfield, with Pierre joining in for the one-two, then squaring for Millette to tap in from the far post with Attong stranded.

The "Saints" made sure Sample and the Tigers' defence would have to work for their clean sheet, as they abandoned their containment tactics and surged forward. They were nearly rewarded, but a combination of near misses and desperate defending and goalkeeping denied them a consolation goal.

Presentation College, San Fernando were the biggest winners on the day though, stopping Moruga Composite 6-0 at Moruga.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

St Anthony’s clobber rival Saints 3-0.
By Andrew Gioannetti & Nigel Simon (Guardian).

With only four matches played, champions St Anthony’s College got a result which justified its title as season “favourites”, when the Westmoorings “Tigers” traveled to Serpentine Road, and left with a 3-0 victory, at the expense of St Mary’s College, in the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) North Zone, yesterday.

The 2011 “invincibles” opened with another goal from Kareem Corbin in the 12th minute, for a 1-0 lead at the half, before one of the outstanding talent’s of last season Adrian Millette slotted home a brace (47th, 57th), for a comfortable victory, least expected by coach Nigel Grosvenor, who previously described the test as a “difficult one”.

The result put St Anthony’s on 10 points from four matches, with the only points dropped coming from a 0-0 stalemate to newly promoted Diego Martin North Secondary.

The win also saw St Anthony’s extend its unbeaten run to 23 matches since the beginning of last season’s campaign. St Mary’s, suffering its second loss, has lacked any creativity in the final third of the pitch as it has recorded just one goal in four matches.

Meanwhile, at Fatima Ground, Mucurapo, it was Diego Martin North which almost spoiled another party. In a scrappy affair, Fatima College managed to scrape a 1-0 victory over the Diego Martin team, thanks to another important goal from Arvin Prescod in the first half.

The zone’s other match saw QRC remain without a point as Trinity recorded its first victory of the season via a 2-1 victory.

Leader “Pres” whips Moruga 6-0 for fourth straight win

Presentation College San Fernando showed no mercy when it trounced a sorry Moruga team 6-0, at Moruga, to remain on top of the standings, with a perfect 12 points from four matches.

The team’s leading scorer for the past two seasons Shackiel Henry was on target with four goals (seven goals in four matches), with Jivaughn Dimsoy and Angel Williams adding one a piece to sink Moruga to yet another loss (its third in as many matches).

Shiva Boys, the reigning South Zone champions, meanwhile, also continued its winning ways with a narrow 1-0 away win over Princes Town, thanks to a match-winning first-half effort scored by none other than Nathaniel Garcia, who has bagged every goal and won every match for the team this season.

Shiva now sits three points behind Presentation, but with a match in hand.

Nicholas Dillon scored a hat-trick in Naparima’s 5-0 victory over second-from-bottom Pleasantville.

El Do East, San Juan win

El Dorado East and San Juan North both secured away victories over Trinity East and Toco Secondary respectively to join idle Arima North at the top of the East Zone standings with seven points each from three matches.

For El Dorado East, the “Blue Thunder” Gabriel Ragout scored in the ninth minute to tie up the score after David Lezama had given host Trinity a shock eighth minute advantage.

Mikal Primus then netted in the 28th minute to put the visitors ahead 2-1 which they took into the interval before Shaquille Bertrand added a 55th minute insurance item for the visitors.

San Juan made the journey to Toco and came away with a 2-0 triumph via strikes from Corrie Dhanoolal in the 35th minute, and Brent Sam, the nephew of former national striker, Hector Sam, five minutes from full-time.

Meanwhile, Ricardo John scored in the 36th and 78th minute and Aikim Andrews in the 75th for the “Green Machine” of St Augustine to shut-out host El Dorado West, 3-0 in the zone’s other match.

John double helps Gustine beat El Do
BY KEVIN SUNICH (Newsday).

FORWARD Ricardo John scored a goal in each half as former champions St Augustine claimed a 3-0 win over home team El Dorado West as play in the East Zone of the Secondary Schools Football League continued yesterday.

This is the Green Machine’s first win after being held to a 1-1 draw by Toco in their opening match. The former champions controlled the match from the opening whistle and should have scored no less than five goals.

The El Do Brown defenders and their goal keeper were kept busy and they were able to hold off Gustine until late in the first-half.

The Green Machine finally broke the deadlock in the 41st minute as John took full advantage of a goal keeping error. Gustine was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box which was taken by Nicholas Marcano.

His curling kick gave the El Do custodian some difficulty and he failed to gather. The ball landed in front of John who made no mistake in finding the net to give his team a 1-0 advantage going into the break.

The former champions started the second period more aggressively as substitute Akim Garcia made two threatening runs down the left side, however, El Do’s defence was able to recover and avoid any danger. The home team had a couple of runs down the right flank, but Gustine’s defence was equal to the task averting any danger.

John was then denied by the El Do keeper at point blank range after a defence error freed him up with only the custodian to beat.

He will however, get his second a few minutes later as he latched onto a square pass from Akim Andrews from the right side. He slammed the ball past the helpless El Do custodian in the 65th minute to make it 2-0.

Andrews put the final nail in the coffin in the 78th minute as he took advantage of another goal keeping error to tap home giving his team a 3-0 win.

Head coach Michael Grayson said while he was not completely pleased with the showing, he was thankful for the win.

“I am not totally satisfied with this game. We should have done a lot better in scoring the goals. This is an area that continues to affect our play. We should have scored at least eight goals from the opportunities we created. Nevertheless we needed a win and we go it so I will live with this,” said Grayson.

He said the condition of the El Dorado West ground may have played a big part in his team not winning by a bigger margin. Grayson said now that they have a win under their belt it should do the players confidence the world of good.

“This win will now lift their confidence and it is left to them to build from this. We have El Do Blue on Saturday and this win will no doubt help as we head into that encounter,” said the head coach.

Today’s SSFL Results -

FATIMA (1) vs DIEGO MARTIN (0).

St Francois, Debe keep clean slate in girls’ SSFL.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Defending zonal winner St Francois Girls’ College continued its defence of the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) North Zone Girls’ Championship with a 4–0 triumph over Holy Name Convent on Thursday.

Simone Emmanuel opened before Samantha Kingston bagged a double to give St Francois a 3–0 lead at the half. Della Joseph scored in the second half to complete the rout.

The result put St Francois at the top of the five-team standings on goal difference with two wins in as many matches, level with St Joseph’s Convent which defeated Providence Girls 6–5 in a goal-fest. St Francois whipped Tranquility Secondary 5–1 in the season opener last week.

Down South, Debe Secondary also recorded its second win when it defeated rivals Vessigny 2–0 to go clear at the top while Fyzabad suffered another loss (1–0) to Point Fortin East.

Top-of-table clashes today in SSFL North and East Zones.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Top-of-the-table clashes in the North and East Zones will take centre stage when the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League resumes today with matches in all five zones.

In what is emerging as a keen battle in the North Zone, the St Anthony’s Tigers, who continued their 23-match unbeaten run with a resounding 3-0 victory over St Mary’s College in midweek action, will be back and as hungry as ever to take all three points, when the team travels to Mucurapo Road, to challenge current second-placed team Fatima College.

The “Tigers,” who have seen their 100 per cent winning streak from the start of last season end less than two weeks ago after being held to a goalless draw by newly-promoted Diego Martin North Secondary, has responded with consecutive wins over Trinity College (2-0) and St Mary’s.

The feature match of the round is scheduled to kick off at 3.45 pm, the same time as the other two matches in the zone. QRC, a team which has failed to secure a point in its first three fixtures, will have a difficult test on its hands, when the team hosts third-placed and unbeaten East Mucurapo Secondary.

Trincity, which has played three matches, with one win, draw and loss will travel to Diego Martin to challenge newly-promoted and goalless Diego Martin North Secondary.

St Mary’s College is on a bye. Down South, leader Presentation College of San Fernando with a maximum 12 points from four matches is on a bye today which will leave the door open for defending champion Shiva Boys’ to at least grab a share of the lead.

Shiva Boys’, the only other team in the zone with a 100 per cent winning record after three matches and coming off a 1-0 away win over Princes Town is at home to Moruga, which is bottom of the table without a point and has conceded 17 goals in three matches.

Naparima, third with six points from four matches meets Princes Town in the feature match of a double-header at Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella while two hours earlier at the same venue, Pleasantville and St Benedict’s, two of three teams on three points, will meet.

Action in the East Zone is expected to provide thrills as the top two finishers in the division last season, Arima North Secondary and San Juan North Secondary will clash at San Juan, from 3.45 pm.

Arima North which edged out Arima North in the final standing last season currently sits again on top with two wins and a draw from three matches, while San Juan is on the same number of points, but trails in third position due to goal differential.

Another exciting fixture will see El Dorado East Secondary taking on fourth-placed St Augustine at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

The bottom two teams, El Dorado West and Toco will meet at El Dorado Ground. In the Central Zone, early leaders and defending champion, Carapichaima East will get its first real test of the season when it faces joint second-placed Presentation College of Chaguanas at Carapichaima.

So far this season ‘Caps’ has brushed aside its first two opponents, Tabaquite (7-0) and Gasparillo (8-1), while Presentation was held goalless by Chaguanas North before blanking Tabaquite 2-0, setting the stage for an interesting clash.

Fellow second-placed team, Chaguanas North, buoyed by its 3-0 shut-out of Couva West is away to Gasparillo, which was also hammered 6-0 by Couva West which is at home to Tabaquite in the two other Central matches.

In Tobago, Mason Hall and Signal Hill finally get their campaign off to a start at Canaan Ground, Bon Accord, after a two-week delay while Speyside will look to build on its 3-3 draw against Scarborough at home to Roxborough.

EL Do East edge ‘Gustine’
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

El Dorado East climbed to the top of the East Zone standings when they secured a close 2-1 win over St Augustine as the BG TT/ First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) continued throughout the twin-island republic yesterday.

The victory puts the boys in blue now top the table on 10pts.

Meanwhile, San Juan North and Arima North Secondary both gained one point after they concluded yesterday’s proceedings with a 1-1 score- line. Anoel Andrew (San Juan) opened the scoring in the 32nd minute but had his goal equalled with a goal-bound strike from Jamol Francis (Arima) in the 69th.

Previously, Arima and San Juan were tied with El Do East on seven pts.

El Dorado West also recorded their first 2012/ 2013 win when they scraped past Toco Secondary 1-0. Brian Deverteuil’s early seventh minute goal was just enough to seal the three points.

Meanwhile, SSFL title holders and North Zone leaders St Anthony’s were held 1-1 by current zonal runners-up Fatima College. This is the first time for the season that the champions have been held.

The “Tigers” remain atop the standings on 11pts while Fatima are on eight. Mucurapo East joined Fatima in the runner-up spot as they defeated Queen’s Royal College 2-1. The victors were previously on five pts but now sit with Fatima on eight. Diego Martin North Secondary also secured their first SSFL win for the season with a 1-0 result over Trinity College. Keston Frederick had to wait 70 minutes to write his name on the scoresheet for Diego Martin. Diego now sit in fourth spot in the standings while Trinity remain in fifth position.

In Central, Carapichaima East cemented their reign atop the table as they added another three points to their overall tally. Now standing at 10pts, “Caps” gave the Presentation College (Chaguanas) squad a football lesson as they bagged nine goals against a goalless “Pres” team. Additionally, Chaguanas North remain in third spot (four pts) after a 6-0 drubbing of Gasparillo Composite. Tabaquite Secondary also clocked their first win of the tournament when they beat Couva West Secondary 1-0.

St Benedict’s College also recorded a significant 2-0 win over Pleasantville Secondary. Goals from Kyle Celestine and Dylan Joseph ensured that the “Southern Lions” bagged another crucial victory. Shiva Boys maintained their runner-up position on the table when they blew past pointless Moruga Secondary 4-1. Up to press time yesterday, Naparima College held a comfortable 2-0 lead over Princes Town Secondary. Goals were bagged by Nicholas Dillon (44’) and Jabari Mitchell (53’).

In Tobago, Signal Hill joined Scarborough and Speyside at the top of the table when they scraped a 1-1 draw against Mason Hall yesterday. The clash between Speyside and Roxborough was unavoidably cancelled.

Andell Jones of Toco Secondary, left, controls the ball under
pressure from El Dorado West's Shakeem Charles in their
Secondary Schools Football League match at El Dorado Grounds, yesterday.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

How could it be the first time for the season they were held and they draw against Diego?
The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians who acknowledge Jesus ;with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.
