Debe High take South Girls Intercol
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (Newsday).

A hat-trick of goals from star-forward Kayla Taylor handed Debe High School the 2012 BGTT/ First Citizens Girls Intercol South Zone title yesterday, as they held on to a 3-2 win over Vessigny Secondary in the championship match at Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

Yesterday’s victory saw Debe High School bag their second title of the season thus far, after copping the zonal League trophy in fine style last week. Taylor proved to be the pivotal factor in the Debe squad as she opened the goal-scoring floodgates in the 25th minute. At the half, the score remained at 1-0.

Taylor would strike again at the resumption, netting another for the dominant south team in the 60th minute to send them 2-0 ahead. Fifteen minutes later, Taylor secured her hat-trick and sent her Debe team to a convincing yet incomplete 3-0 lead.

In the final ten minutes, a persistent Vessigny team continued to push and were duly rewarded with two well-deserved goals. However, it was too little too late, as the Debe team tasted sweet revenge against their southern counterparts. In last year’s final, the 2012 South Zone winners were dethroned by Vessigny in the final.

Manager of the Debe team, Clive Auguste was elated with the victory and heaped praises on his squad for their competitive consistency.

“It really was a hard-fought match. This was a repeat of last year’s final, but this time we got the better. We’ve held this title in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and were ousted in the final last year by this same team (Vessigny). But, we’re just taking back what’s ours (title),” he proudly stated.

Auguste admitted that the Vessigny team played well and produced a number of goal-scoring opportunities, both in the first and second periods. He lauded the entire team, especially the defence, for standing their ground, especially in the dying minutes.

“We absorbed so much pressure. Our defence was tight and Taylor made the difference for us today (yesterday). We now have to put our focus on the Big 4 match against St Augustine on Monday.

We’re still taking it one game at a time, but we have to retain what’s ours,” he added. Auguste indicated that the team’s focus will now be toward the National Girls League and Intercol titles.

Debe open their BGTT/ First Citizens Big Four campaign against St Augustine at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima on Monday.

Fight to the finish in girls InterCol finals.
T&T Guardian Reports.

In one of the most thrilling finales, Debe Secondary fended off a late attacking surge from Vessigny Secondary to cop the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) South Zone InterCol title with a 3-2 win, yesterday.

While national attacker Kayla Taylor was in fine form scoring a hat-trick, her efforts were almost overshadowed by Khadidra Debisette and Teneisha Cobham, who grabbed goals in the 78th and 80th minutes, respectively.

Taylor opened the scoring in the 13th minute, as Debe held a slender lead going into half time. However, she found her second on the hour mark, which seemingly put Debe in pole position for a straight forward win.

When Taylor scored in the 75th minute, just five minutes before the end of regulation time, the match seemed done and dusted. The runaway South Zone winner, which went through the season with eight wins in as many matches, had its nerves shattered when Debisette pulled one back with two minutes left.

This showed as the defence seeped another in, this time from the other in-form attacker, Cobham, who struck in added time. It, however, was too late as Debe persevered to grab yet another zonal InterCol title.

Over in Tobago, Bishop’s High overcame a determined Scarborough Secondary to take the Tobago zone Intercol title at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet. Captain Kristen Julien led the way with a double strike to spur on the maroon and white-clad girls to a hard fought 3-2 win.

Bishop’s pressured Scarborough from the onset and were rewarded when Julien found the back of the net twice within the space of 14 minutes. Julien, Krystal Taylor and Anya Akili combined to keep Scarborough’s custodian Aaliyah Charles busy in the upright.

Cherise Roberts found the net for Scarborough, as the first half ended 2-1 in favour of Bishop’s. On the resumption, Bishop’s continued to attack, much to the delight of their lively band of supporters.

However, Scarborough showed great resilience as they rallied back with Roberts creating numerous chances. She was eventually rewarded with her second and the team’s equaliser in the 60th.

With momentum on their side, Scarborough looked determined to seal the victory. However, against the run of play, Bishop’s April Ewing got the match winner with a long-range shot, lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper’s reach.

Goalkeeper Charles then switched to striker as Scarborough pushed up their players to attack in search of another goal but fell just short. Bishop’s now takes over the reign from last year’s winner, Roxborough Secondary.

In the North/East division, both semifinals were played with St Francois sealing a spot in the zonal final for the third consecutive year, while St Augustine fended off a plucky Providence Girls to take a win on penalties.

St Francois dropped San Juan North 2-0 via a double from Samantha Kingston (42nd and 45th). Naomee Guerra scored the equaliser for St Augustine which was down 1-0 within three minutes through a goal from Providence standout Chelcy Ralph.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

‘Pres’ delight in sweet revenge.
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (Newsday).

Presentation San Fernando’s football team were in their glee on Wednesday after erasing last year’s disappointing second place finish in the Secondary Schools Football League by clinching the title this year.

Their coach, Sean Cooper, was in a celebratory mood after they were crowned 2012 champions with a dominating performance this season.

The Presentation College “Lions” maintained their unbeaten run in this year’s edition of the tournament when they roared to a 4-0 victory over Pleasantville Secondary in their final zonal match at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Altogether, they recorded an unassailable 33pts from 11 matches.

After being clipped of the zonal title last year due to a point deduction penalty, the Presentation coach admitted that revenge carried a sweet and delightful taste. “This year was retribution for the 2011 season. We had a flawless run of performances in our matches this year and the team deserved it.

Last year, when the title was taken away from us, we were hurt. Nevertheless, with one hundred percent of wins this year, we’re on the right track and we’re looking for bigger things now,” he explained.

With the nation’s five zonal champions already named, Cooper revealed that his team is determined to claim top honours in the remaining League and Intercol tournaments.

Meanwhile, retaining their national zonal titles were St Anthony’s (North) and Carapichaima (Central). Arima copped the East Zone, while the Tobago zone is still yet to be decided.

Presentation will open their BGTT Big Five campaign on Monday, when they face the East Zone champions at the Larry Gomes Stadium from 3.45pm. Cooper openly stated that neither he, nor his squad, will be intimidated by any other contesting school.

“We’re going for the National title. The boys are so focussed on this right now and we’re not backing down, ” said Cooper. “We know that they’re a lot of big teams in the north and it is going to be tough for us. However, champions win away from home. With our one hundred percent record so far, we’re not giving up. It will all boil down to who wants it (title) more, and who’s the better team on the day.”

Cooper also revealed that the south winners will be without their star- striker Shackiel Henry and right-wingback Anthony Charles for Monday’s clash.

The duo, along with Arima’s Marcus Gomez, are expected to join the rest of the national Under-20 team for their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) final round match against Jamaica next week. Cooper was well aware that he would be losing two key players for the Arima encounter, but held in high regard the smooth transition of tactical players of his team.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Siparia East pleased with with SSFL debut
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (Newsday)

EVEN though Siparia East Secondary bowed out of the BGTT/ First Citizens Girls Intercol quarter-finals earlier this month, the south school was still in high praise of their players and managerial staff for finally sealing the school’s debut in the decorated Intercol tournament.

Although their stay in this year’s national competition was short-lived, the school has continued to overcome several competitive obstacles in both the boys and girls divisions. In this year’s Girls Intercol clashes, Siparia East defeated San Fernando East Secondary 6-0, Fyzabad Anglican 6-2, and drubbed San Fernando Central 19-0. After topping their group, the budding school then played their first-ever Intercol quarter-final in the school’s history, but were eliminated 3-0 by a persistent Point Fortin East team.

Coach of the team, Iverne Yearwood expressed elation with the squad’s promotion and looked forward to next competitive year.

“Next year we’ll be competing in the League and Intercol, so this will be another historic achievement for the school. This would be our second time we’ll be having a girls team in the Intercol and a first for us, having them compete in the Championship (League) as well,” he stated.

Yearwood was especially pleased with the team’s elevation into the Intercol and hoped that the team continue to do well under his tutelage.

“It’s a very proud moment for us as a team, and its an even bigger achievement for the school. The girls have worked hard and I hope that they feel inspired by our good string of performances recently. We’re getting better,” he added.

The head coach was well aware that schools such as Debe High and Providence Girls were stalwart teams in the competition. However, he was highly optimistic about his team’s chances to progress further into the national tournaments.

“We know our journey has just started and we have some tough days ahead pertaining to facing the bigger teams. We’re improving in every game and I know we will make it. Our boys made their Intercol debut in 2007 and stayed for three years.

The girls are following in their footsteps and they’re showing a lot of growth,” he concluded.

Yearwood also indicated that the school’s team is presently searching for sponsors to help offset minor financial costs. He called on corporate Trinidad and Tobago and the public at large to peer in to the football futures of Siparia East and lend a hand to the now emerging team.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Bishop’s crowned Tobago Intercol champs
T&T Newsday Reports.

BISHOP’S High School (BHS) is now the Tobago Girls Intercol Football Champion for the very first time after they defeated Scarborough Secondary 3-2 in a highly entertaining match at the Dwight Yorke stadium yesterday.

Bishop’s Kristen Julien opened the scoring in the tenth minute of the game to send the Bishop’s supporters in a frenzy. With sustained pressure on the defence of Scarborough Secondary, the Bishop’s girls — in their traditional maroon and white uniform — made it clear that they wanted the title Roxborough Secondary School held for the past two years. In the 34th minute, Julien once again put the ball past Scarborough goalkeeper, Aliyah Charles, and into the net to double her tally and the score.

With a two goal cushion, Bishop’s were in the driver seat with the halftime approaching. But Scarborough started to settle down and were rewarded before the half when Cherise Roberts gave their supporters a goal to celebrate and renewed hope for the intermission.

Twenty minutes after the resumption, although Bishop’s had looked the more likely to score, Roberts scored again to even the game at 2-2 and leave all to play for in the last 20 minutes of the game.

The deciding goal came against the run of play with a long range effort from April Ewing flying over Scarborough goalkeeper Charles to send the Bishop’s supporters wild with delight in the 70th minute. Scarborough attacked relentingly in the remaining minutes of the game but could not add to their goal tally as Bishop’s held firm till the final whistle.

They will now move onto the National Girls Intercol Competition.

Scarborough beat Mason Hall to join 'Big Five'
T&T Express Reports.

Scarborough Secondary won the BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Tobago Zone yesterday with a 2-0 win over rivals Mason Hall in Tobago on yesterday.

Vadez Perez put Scarborough in the lead via a 24th minute free kick, while Jem Gordon's 85th minute strike sealed the result.

In other matches in Tobago yesterday, Speyside Secondary defeated Roxborough Secondary 2-0 at Plymouth, with Rondon Kerr scoring twice.

Kerr hit the back of the net in the 30th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead heading into the half-time break before closing out the win with a 79th minute item.

Scarborough's win earned them a spot in Wednesday's BG T&T/First Citizens "Big Five" semi-final fixture against the winners of tomorrow's Big Five quarter-final between East Zone champions Arima North Secondary and South Zone winners Presentation College San Fernando.

Scarborough retains Tobago zone.
By Clayton Clarke (Guardian).

Scarborough Secondary successfully defended the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Tobago championship with a 2-0 victory over Mason Hall Secondary, at the Plymouth Recreational Grounds yesterday.

The champions were made to work for the victory as Mason Hall captain Brandon Joseph again led his team in stride.

Joseph, Akini James and Hakeem Legalle were on the attack from the kick-off as only a win would help their chances of taking the title.

The trio held Scarborough defence into their half. Mason Hall had several corners and shots on goals but Scarborough’s goal keeper Kemmo Gardiner was outstanding in the uprights, keeping the balls out.

On a breakaway Scarborough’s skipper Valdez Perez got the opening goal on a counter attack in the 16th minute with a right-footed shot slipping the ball below Mason Hall custodian Che Lovelle.

Mason Hall continued to press but failed to convert their chances with Legalle the chief culprit. Joseph, with some inspired and creative runs, seem destined to score but Gardiner was solid in goal.

In the second-half Scarborough came out more determined and was rewarded when prolific striker Mickaael Gordon ran past two defenders to find the back of the net in the 87 minute. Scarborough looked they could get a third as Gordon and Arion James pressed.

With the result Scarborough went on an unassailable 18 points while Mason Hall remain on ten with one outstanding game against Roxborough next Thursday. Scarborough will meet either Arima North Secondary or Presentation College in the SSFL Big-Five competition, on Wednesday.

'PRES' STAY PERFECT...beat Arima 1-0 to advance to Big 5 semis
By Kern De Freitas (T&T Express)

South Zone winners Presentation College stayed on course yesterday for a perfect BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) run with a 1-0 win over East Zone champions Arima North Secondary at Malabar's Larry Gomes Stadium.

It was hard work with a little luck needed in a keenly contested Big Five quarterfinal, but Pres found it in the 85th minute off the head of Civaughn Dimsoy to shut down the Dial Dynamos.

Before that, the match looked headed for kicks from the penalty mark, but after numerous near misses, Pres made one count.

It was tough going breaking down a dogged Arima defence; still only one team could move on.

Pres will next travel to Tobago to take on Scarborough Secondary in tomorrow's semifinal at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet. But today, another team will put their unbeaten tag on the line. St Anthony's College, the 2011 Big Five winners, will travel to Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva to face Central Zone champs Carapichaima East in the first semi. (See Page 57)

Arima could have had the lead at half-time, and pressed for it early in the second period, when the momentum see-sawed back and forth.

They got close to goal, but Jamaul Francois and Rondell Elie failed to beat the Pres defence, and Kervyn Mohammed missed twice before he was substituted.

And after a wave of late attacks fended off by Arima, Pres finally grabbed the winner when Antwan John floated in a cross from the right, and a flick of the head from Dimsoy was all it took to leave Arima custodian Shundell Mayers flat-footed, and Presentation fans celebrating.

The first half was no thriller, but certainly there was little between the teams. Both sides were missing their talismanic players to national under-20 duty—playmaker Marcus Gomez for Arima and potent striker Shakiel Henry of Pres—but each side had a couple of close chances by half-time.

It was Arima's Neveal Hackshaw who could have first broken the deadlock, had his shot been powerful after a searing run through the Pres defence.

Generally, both sides impressed with their defending, but still there were a few missed chances, and a couple of great saves at either end before the break. Arima's Jesus Perez blasted a 25-metre free kick in the 24th that a diving Kelvin Henry in the Pres goal could only tip onto the crossbar. And for Presentation, Angel Williams should have done better with his blast from the penalty area that thundered wide.

Still, the South Zone title holders were not made to pay for their misses.

In the earlier match of the "Larry Gomes" double header, Debe High School continued their four-year unbeaten run with a 3-0 beating of St Augustine Secondary in their BG T&T InterCol semifinal.

Debe were in full control at 3-0 up by the interval, with the ever-dependable Kayla Taylor slamming home the first two goals in the 13th and 26th, and Patrice Vincent adding the third in the 40th.

Debe continued to dominate in the second half and muffed a number of chances, while Debe goalkeeper Kazzi Grant came to their rescue late on with a blinding save to keep a clean sheet for the South Zone champions.
St Anthony's tackle Carapichaima in Big 5 semis
By Roger Seepersad (T&T Express)

North Zone champions St Anthony's College start their quest for the BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big 5 title, today, when they face Central Zone winners Carapichaima East in a replay of last year's final.

The two sides will meet at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva from four p.m.

St Anthony's, who won the North Zone title with a 0-0 draw at home to Fatima College to finish the season with seven wins and five draws, defeated Caps 1-0 in last year's final, and will be looking to get past the Central Zone team again this year.

Carapichaima East lost two matches in capturing the Central Zone crown, but one result–their 2-1 loss to Chaguanas North Secondary–was reversed following a disciplinary hearing, giving "Caps" the title.

Carapichaima manager Steve Gopeesingh said his players are confident, despite not having leading scorer Shaquille Holder who is on national duty with the Trinidad and Tobago Under-20s.

"We trying to work as a team and work on the mental side of things because I think that has been our problem over the years," said Gopeesingh.

He noted that Holder accounted for 28 of the 69 goals Caps scored in the Central Zone competition, and said that although Holder was their leading scorer, the other players also scored a lot of goals which is one of the positives for his team heading into today's encounter.

Hear nah...as is having to play away is not enough, even with the impressive unbeaten record in the zone...but the officiating does be a next thing Pres does have to fight up with boy.  Talk about a raw deal the southerners does get up there.  The ref play about 15 mins time-added-on when there were very few time stopping infringements during the second half.

Caps tame Tigers
By Kern De Freitas (T&T Express)

Sometimes a win is a win.

And yesterday Carapichaima East Secondary's battling 1-0 win over St Anthony's College at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva surely was not pretty.

But it served a few purposes for Carapichaima: they simultaneously earned a spot in the BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big Five final at the defending champs' expense; stopped the North Zone winners' unbeaten run at 27 matches; and took revenge for Caps' similar 1-0 loss in last year's Big Five final to the same opponents.

Against the run of play, in the 71st minute, Carapichaima striker Marvin Martin grabbed hold of a howler from St Anthony's goalkeeper Kevon Sample, who dropped what looked like an easy pickup, and put "Caps" ahead.

That was all Carapichaima needed to move on, and they will await news of today's result between Presentation College San Fernando and Scarborough Secondary at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago.

It was more a war of attrition than a contest of wits, yesterday, and perhaps the result was fair, given that Caps' defence was the sturdier. The Tigers survived a few defensive blunders, but another such lapse led to their downfall.

They had more chances in the match, but Caps had the personnel to keep them at bay. St Anthony's tried to claw their way back, particularly through Shaquille Long, but his attempt to walk into goal in the 77th would have been better concluded with an earlier shot. He also had a few other shots, but nothing that troubled Carapichaima goalkeeper Demetrius Edwards.

Outside of their "gift" from the Tigers, Carapichaima had little to talk about in attack in the second half. But St Anthony's simply had no answer for Martin's goal.

The 0-0 halftime score was probably a fair reflection of the first period of play. The Tigers looked likely to score, but the better chances came Caps' way against the run of play, and they were unable to make them count.

In fact, the first shot on goal from Martin, after St Anthony's defender Savion Kirton had provided him an open look, was way too tame to trouble Sample in the Tigers' goal.

The half never really saw any rhythm from either team; St Anthony's were hustled off the ball constantly, but Caps failed to keep possession.

Still, the Central champs could have done way better in front of goal, Martin and the diminutive Akeel James both failing to capitalise on defensive mistakes.

At the other end, Kwesi Weston did threaten down the left flank for the Tigers and striker Adrian Millette had his chances as well, his best a header from 17 metres that lacked the power to be effective.

Caps' one second half chance was, though, and now they await another shot at Big Five glory.
Caps stuns Tigers in Big Five
By Andrew Gioannetti (T&T Guardian)

Carapichaima East Secondary brought the 33-match unbeaten run of St Anthony’s College to a screeching halt yesterday, when it edged the title holders 1–0 in the semifinals of the BGTT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big-Five competition at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

A close-range unorthodox goal from forward Marvin Martin in the 71st minute is all it took for the nine-time consecutive zonal winners, “Caps,” to hand the “Tigers” its first defeat in two seasons in the SSFL.

It was sweet revenge for Carapichaima, who lost by the same margin to its opponents in last year’s final.  Carapichaima as a result will meet either Scarborough or Presentation College, San Fernando, which contest the second semifinal today at 4 pm, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.

Ironically, Carapichaima went into the game pending an appeal by its Central Zone counterparts, Chaguanas North, regarding a controversial decision to reverse the points in a 2–1 loss when the two teams met in their league match.

Carapichaima subsequently protested the presence of one of the Chaguanas North players and the SSFL disciplinary committee ruled in its favour, giving it a 3–0 victory and three points, which took it to the Central title.

Chaguanas North has appealed that ruling and a meeting on Monday failed to bring about a resolution. The committee will meet again tomorrow. The best result for Chaguanas, granted it is given the benefit of a reverse of the decision, is that it will take the league title and given a bye for the first round of the Coca-Cola InterCol tournament.

Yesterday, Carapichaima took the game to the Tigers and got the rewards. Tomorrow’s second semifinal between Scarborough Secondary and Presentation College San Fernando, will follow the Girls’ Big-Four semifinal between Signal Hill and St Francois, which kicks off at 2 pm.

Debe won the first match 3–0 over St Augustine Secondary.

Pres, Scarborough clash for final berth
By Roger Seepersad (T&T Express)

Presentation College San Fernando will face Scarborough Secondary in today's BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) "Big Five" semi-final at Dwight Yorke Stadium, Tobago from 4 p.m.

That match will be played after Signal Hill Secondary and St Francois Girls College meet in the BG T&T Girls InterCol semi-final from 2 p.m.

"Pres" will again put their perfect record on the line today, and their coach Shawn Cooper is quietly confident they can overcome the Tobago champions, who he believes will put up a good fight on home soil.

On Monday Presentation edged Arima North Secondary 1-0 in their hard-fought Big Five quarter-final at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar to earn the chance to face the Tobago Zone champions.

According to Cooper, the team have pulled together since losing four key players, and are determined to play hard right to the end.

"We are going as far as our bodies could take us and we are pushing ourselves," Cooper told the Express yesterday.

"Our squad is a small one, and it is taxing on the younger players. We have already lost four star players, but the more the squad depletes, the greater the fight...we are going out there full of confidence," said the Presentation coach.

Though they have not seen their opponents before, Cooper expects a challenge.

"Playing at home, they should give us some stiff competition but we are quietly confident," Cooper added.

Scarborough were knocked out of the Big Five last year by Carapichaima East Secondary at the quarter-final stage, and will be hoping to go all the way to the final this time around.

Today's BGTT/First Citizens SSFL Fixtures:

Girls InterCol semis:
Signal Hill vs St Francois, Dwight Yorke Stadium, 2 p.m.

Boys Big 5
Presentation College Chaguanas vs Scarborough Secondary, Dwight York Stadium, 4 p.m.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Bishop's High School wins both Tobago Zone Girls League and Intercol titles. Earlier this week they claimed the league title after beating Signal Hill 4-0 at BHS grounds. They won the Intercol Finals today (Oct 25th 2012) 3-2 over Scarborough Secondary School.

Blessings and Enjoy the night.

So how come they not playing in the Big 5 and Scarborough Secondary is there ?

The simple answer is that the press got it wrong. :frustrated:
Scarborough Secondary won the Boys League title While BHS are double Girls champions, winning both the League and Intercol titles.

So it should read, Bishop's High vs St Francois, Dwight Yorke Stadium, 2 p.m and not Signal Hill (as stated by the press) .... then ?

Bishop's High 1 St. Francois Girls 0
Scarborough Sec 1 Pres. Col (South) 2

Bishop's High had most of the play for the first 20-25 mins of the match. Faded towards the end of the half. Had to battle to keep the score at 1-0

Yes a player from Scar. Sec did suffer a broken foot (ankle) late in the 2nd half. The tackle probably should have been called a foul but wasn't. Presentation looked the better of the two teams. I consider it an easy win for Pres.

Blessings and Enjoy the night.

Tigers ready to bounce back after shock loss.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

“They were in tears, because losing is a strange thing to the guys but champions don’t bow their heads and now we’re ready to defend the InterCol title.” Those were the sentiments of three-time consecutive North Zone and defending InterCol champion coach of St Anthony’s College, Nigel Grosvenor.

Grosvenor, who has helped develop one of the most followed and favoured colleges in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), says that he and his team of “Tigers” are ready to bounce back after what many described as a shocking loss to Carapichaima East Secondary, in the semifinal stage of the BGTT/First Citizens SSFL Big-Five competition at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Tuesday.

The Carapichaima players, to their credit, took the game to St Anthony’s, albeit in a scrappy affair. St Anthony’s was up against a team which won the Central Zone league title for nine consecutive seasons, an incredible feat in any league.

A Marvin Martin close-range effort just after the 70th minute of the match gave Caps the unforgiving victory a year after St Anthony’s took the Big-Five trophy with the same result against the same Central Zone opponent. The lone goal in Tuesday’s semifinal loss for St Anthony’s came as a result of an unfortunate gaffe from Jevon Sample after he dropped what should have been a conventional goalkeeper’s catch.

But, Grosvenor, in good sense of man management, was quick and eager to reassure the school’s demotivated number-one custodian, that he was well and truly one of the main factors in his team’s successes this year. And, according to Grosvenor, he was obliged to remind Sample of the highlight save he made from a penalty shot this season which helped prevent St Anthony’s from a loss against Malick in the North Zone league competition.

“The team was definitely demoralised, and they still think about the result, but after calling them out for a session in the pool this morning (yesterday) and having lunch, there was no argument. They did not and will not completely forget the result, but they know that they are champions.”

While Carapichaima missed several instrumental players, St Anthony’s has fielded a relatively young team this season with a number of students heading off to schools abroad with scholarships while two of its midfield standouts, Keane McIvor and Xavier Rajpaul, were committed to national under-20 duties. That is where Grosvenor felt the match was lost.

Looking ahead, St Anthony’s remains with the Coca-Cola National InterCol title to defend. On November 12, the Tigers faces the champion team of North Zone Senior Division, which is yes to be determined. Grosvenor, though striving for outright success, expects an even greater test in the upcoming knockout tournament.

“Everyone plays their best match against us. Everyone wants to beat the champions. So, naturally we’re targets,” he said. “It’s going to be even harder, especially with the loss. If you lose one, the next opponent will go into the match thinking they can do the same.” Commenting on the amount of work it took for the team to retain the North Zone title for the third straight year he bluntly exclaimed, “It easy to get to the top, but its much more difficult to stay there. The boys will be ready for it.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Pres edge Scarborough, book final berth vs Caps.
T&T Express Reports.

SOUTH CHAMPIONS Presentation College moved into the final of the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary School Football League with a 2-1 victory late yesterday over Tobago champions Scarborough Secondary at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Tobago.

After eliminating East champions Arima North 1-0 at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Presentation now join last year's beaten finalists Carapichaima East Secondary in next Monday' s final.

Presentation never trailed after taking a 12th minute lead through powerfully-built striker Civaughn Dimsoy. Andell Williams then doubled the advantage through a 42nd minute free-kick. Jem Gordon got a consolation for Scarborough in the 70th minute, but the Tobago team got no closer.

Presentation are unbeaten this season having won 14 matches on the trot, while Carapichaima's only defeats have come twice to Central Zone rivals Chaguanas North, one of those results being reversed in the protest room. Carapichaima upset North champions St Anthony's 1-0 at the semi-final stage at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar on Tuesday.

An "exhausted" Presentation coach Shawn Cooper told the Express after the match that he is proud of his players. He described the recovery period between matches, after they played their quarter-final against Arima Secondary Comprehensive at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar--which they won 1-0--as "murderous". And because of that, he lauded his players.

"They played with a lot of heart," Cooper said. "I think in the second half the fatigue factor came in and we started to play a little deeper. We encouraged them to come forward and try to catch them on the break. Then we gave away a soft goal, but in saying so I think the game was a well-thought out one."

Cooper singled out his defenders for doing "yeoman service", and is looking forward to next Monday's final against Carapichaima East.

" I saw them against St Anthony's. If you are a coach and you looked at the game, it was not a pretty game. St Anthony's should have won the game, but a silly error by the goalkeeper (caused the upset). I don't think they played with any structure. But [Carapichaima] are a team which fights, and they will come with some fight (in the final against us).

"This is their second Big Five final (after they lost last year's decider)," Cooper said, "so they will be looking forward to get a victory, but we'll go out there and play like any other game."

In the first match of the yesterday double-header, Bishop High School beat St Francois Girls 1-0 to reach the final of the girls InterCol competition. Bishops will now meet Debe High School in the final. Debe High School whipped St Augustine 3-0 at the first semi-final stage.

In the first match of the yesterday double-header, Bishop High School beat St Francois Girls 1-0 through a goal from Kirsten Julien to reach the final of the girls InterCol competition. Bishops will now meet Debe High School in the final. Debe High School whipped St Augustine 3-0 at the first semi-final stage.

Bishop’s High edge St Francois in Big Four.
T&T Newsday Reports.

ONE GOAL was all that was needed as Bishop’s High School (BHS) held their nerve to defeated a persistent St. Francois Girls College in the Secondary Schools Football League Girls Big Four semi-final game at the Dwight Yorke Stadium yesterday.

The goal scored by Kirsten Julien from a pass by Krystal Taylor in minute 20 was preserved at the half time interval. And after the resumption neither team could capitalise on the opportunities that came before them. In the end, when the referee blew the final whistle, it was the home team and their jubilant supporters that erupted in a frenzy.

After the game coach of St. Francois Girls, Jason Spence said to lose is always a disappointment. “Bishop’s got their chance and they put it away while they failed to do likewise because at the end of the day goals win matches.”

However, he noted that they still have the North-East intercol to look forward to and possibly the national Intercol competition.

Meanwhile manager of BHS, Bernard Allum said it was a hard fought victory and the girls deserve it as they played to their strengths and they played well. They will now be looking forward to Trinidad for the next game for which coach Rudder Burke will continue to prepare the girls in the same fashion he did all season long.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

big write up for ah side that get licks...the usual bias reporting...however grovie has done a great job over d years although he shouldnt be complaining abt missing 2 players.  Pres and Caps are missing key players so everybody not at full strength except scarbrough.

st anthonys field 2 under 16 teams so they expose a lot of players to competitive football plus they team that went colombia was ah under 15 team that played in ah u16 tournament so they should be major force for the next few years.

Scarborough Secondary player was on the end of a tackle that left him with a badly dislocated and most likely broken ankle. The player's foot was completely out at the socket and facing in a different direction.
Sad injury, hope he is able to get the correct attention and can make a full recovery.

I did not see the tackle but I was informed that the linesman on that side said that it was not a bad tackle but the boy's foot got stuck in the ground and that is what made the injury worse.

Prayers go out to this unfortunate young man.
