Caledonia delivers, burns Joe Public 1-0.
By: Gordon Pierre (ttproleague).

Caledonia AIA delivered on their promise to burn Joe Public in the Toyota Classic with a 1-0 win at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, on Friday thanks to a decisive 81st minute header by Guyanese striker Nigel Codrington The game saw Caledonia having the lion share of ball possession and goal, scoring chances.
But Joe Public had the first chance at goal when Roen Nelson shot hit the side netting in the 4th minute. Five minutes later Caledonia would respond, Kareem Joseph shot went straight at the Public’s goalkeeper Aleanjandro Figueroa.
Kareem Joseph then shot wide in the 24th minute after a beautiful build-up and cross by Nigel Pierre. In the 32nd minute Kendall Jagdeosingh should have scored but he shot straight at keeper Figueroa after finding himself free after a left-sided free kick taken by Sheldon Emmanuel.
After that opportunity, the first half settled down to a game of possession but no goal scoring opportunities for either team.
The second half started off at a pace with Caledonia’s Jagdeosingh shooting straight into two Joe Public defenders inside of the first minute after the restart and just two minutes later Sheldon Emmanuel shot over bar after an enterprising run down the left side.
The Eastern Lions seemed caged in their own half and were forced to resist wave after wave of Caledonia’s attack. This forced Public’s coach Michael Mc Comie to make a double change in the 57th minute, bring on Jason Springer for Seon Power and Silas Spann younger brother of national player Silvo Spann for Arnold Dwarika. A visible disgusted Dwarika did not go to the substitutes bench but retired immediately to the dressing room.
The double change had little effect on the running of the game, as the Caledonia trio of Densill Theobald, Conrad Smith and Stephan David totally dominated the midfield. However, in the 76th minute Reon Nelson had a golden opportunity to steal victory for Joe Public but hit overbar after being sent through.
Four minutes later Public was made to pay when Nigel Pierre found second half substitute Nigel Codgrington with a perfect cross, which the Guyanese striker clinically headed home to make it 1-0 Caledonia.
In the 88th minute Public had one last chance to score but Gary Glasgow headed over bar when free inside the six yard box.
In the end the score remained 1-0 and saw Caledonia keep their promise of continuing Joe Public’s early elimination from knock-out competitions this year. The ‘Men from Morvant’ will meet United Petrotrin in the semi-final of the Toyota Classic next Friday.

Joe Public - Aleanjandro Figueroa, Carey Harris, Dale Saunders, Arnold Dwarika (Silas Spann 57th ), Lyndon Andrews, Gray Glasgow, Roen Nelson, Abbssi Mc Pherson, Wolry Wolfe, Seon Power (Jason Springer 57th), Terrance Mc Allister (Sean Cooper 83rd).

Caledonia AIA - Jhonny Ortiz Cardona, Leslie Holligan, Julio Ceasr De La Rosa, Uz Taylor, Sheldon Emmanuel, Kareem Joseph, Densill Theobald, Stephan David, Kendall Jagdeosingh (Nigel Codrington 74th ), Conrad Smith (Shawn Bishop 65th), Nigel Pierre (Abdallah Phillips 89th)

Rangers upset Jabloteh via penalties.
.…and qualify for Toyota Classic semis.
By: Vinod Narwani (ttproleague).

On a night where the 'underdog' ruled, Superstar Rangers got the better of CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh 5-4 via spot-kicks to advance to their first ever Toyota Classic semi-final.
At the end of regulation time at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, both teams were deadlocked at 1-1 and the match had to be decided by penalties, and Jabloteh’s Aurtis Whitley proved to the villain on the night, as he was the only man that had his spot kick saved and that proved to be the difference between the two teams.
Jabloteh enjoyed more ball possession in the opening half, often getting near the Rangers area; but they were unable to penetrate and hardly gave the Rangers goal keeper Shurland Awai much to do.
However, the St. Ann’s-based team, in fact, took the lead in the 12th minute through the boot of Todd Ryan; he took a shot from just inside the area all along the ground, and Jabloteh’s keeper Brian James, seemed to have it covered, but was beaten by a freakish bounce that caused the ball to change its course, bamboozling James before finding the back of the net to give rangers a 1-0 lead.
That eventually led to Rangers coach Anthony Streete admitting after the match that the goal was "fortunate", but quickly added such things are part of football.
Jabloteh found the net in the 20th minute, but the goal was disallowed; Trent Noel’s bullet from outside was brilliantly saved by Awai, only for it to be headed in by Peter Prosper who was not only off-side, but thought to have also fouled the goalie in the process and the goal was disallowed.
Rangers should have buried the insurance goal in the 38th minute when Ricardo Aleong who came on as a 26th minute substitute for Dean Pacheco, made a pass to Kerwyn Jemmott on the left, his ball across the goal was slammed over the top by captain Errol McFarlene.
A minute later, Jabloteh had a chance to equalize, Jason Marcano played one from the right to Prosper inside the area, but his desperate attempt with feet outstretched did not threaten Awai.
Jabloteh continued to press for the equalizer in the second half, with Aurtis Whitley taking a shot from outside that went over the crossbar in minute-52.
The Anthony Streete-coached unit again had a chance to redeem themselves for their first-half miss when Ryan received a neat ball in the 58th minute, turned towards the box only to shoot off-target.
Jemmott then nearly got the second item for the boys in blue, his shot hitting James’ right post in the 63rd minute.
Things soon started going against the underdogs, Colin Roberts being sent off for his second yellow card of the match in the 76th minute after a rough tackle on Marcano.
And five minutes later, Jason Eastman fouled Cyd Gray inside the box to give Jabloteh a penalty; Noel converted the item with ease to level the scores at 1-1.
Jabloteh were also down to 10 men eventually, but it happened to be in stoppage time when Ian Gray got marching orders from referee Richard Piper for pulling Lorne Joseph’s shirt when he was sprinting towards goal.
In the end, the first spot-kick proved costly for Jabloteh when Awai superbly saved Whitley’s shot.
All others converted theirs, with the one taken by substitute Don Morris bringing joy to Rangers as it confirmed victory over the local footballing powerhouse. Superstar rangers will now go on to meet Defence Force in the Toyota Classic semi-finals next Friday.

Petrotrin come from behind.
…..upset ‘Grande Stars’
By: James Saunders (ttproleague).

United Petrotrin have booked their place in the semi-finals of the Toyota Classic thanks to a gutsy come from behind 2-1 victory over North East Stars at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.
Romauld Aguillera and veteran Anthony Rougier completed what can be described as a spirited never say die performance by the ‘Oilmen’ who were 1-0 down at halftime after a 45th minute penalty against them was converted.
The game, which started slowly with both teams taking the cautious route, was played on even terms throughout with no side really outplaying the other.
However despite being the first of the teams to concede a goal it was Brian Williams' men who got the better chances early on in a half.
Only 14 minutes had gone on the clock when Stars keeper Curtis Granger could only parry a powerful low cross from the right, however the keeper recovered well as he had to fling his body in the way of a follow up cross by striker Sylvester Teesdale to preserve his sides clean slate.
Petrotrin’s best chance of the half came in the 25th minute when the same striker was gifted an errant back pass just out side North East’s penalty area however with time and space at his disposal the striker who would have been well advised to go in closer to get a better shot chose to blast his attempt overbar.
The ‘Oilmen’ were made to pay for their wastage when moments before the interval under 20 player Larry Bacchus making his cup debut handled a ball inside his own area.
Kevin Jeffrey stepped up to blast his spotkick to the left of Martin who guessed wrong.
After the interval, the Sangre Gande boys picked up some momentum and started to create some chances of their own.
Jeffrey was unlucky in the 48th when he rounded Perry Martin in the Petrotrin goal only to see his toe poke roll just wide.
Despite some promising spells from Cummings’ men the best chances continued to fall to the south team who searched desperately for an equalizer.
Teesdale was again the culprit in the 62nd minute when he beautifully controlled a ball on his chest inside the area only to hit his volleyed attempt straight at Martin who parried over bar.
Moments later substitute Marlon Lewis’s optimistic strike from way out on the right almost embarrassingly sneaked in at Grangers near post when it crashed into the upright with the keeper scrambling to get into position.
Just as it seemed that Star’s would hold on to their slender one goal advantage, Petrotrin finally got the equalizer they were looking for when midfielder Romauld Aguillera capped of a fine evening performance when he ran unto a cross floated into the heart of North East defence and guided his header past Granger who seemed to think that the ball was going out to make the score 1-nil.
The Sangre Grande team came to life after they conceded but the Petrotrin defense marshaled by Martin stood firm sucking up all the pressure.
The Oilmen would pull ahead with what would proved to be the game winner in the 77th minute when referee Phillip Jordan pointed to the spot after a North East defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.
Skipper Rougier’s inch perfect penalty kick would give his side a 2-1 advantage and move them a step closer to the much coveted $30,000 first prize. United Petrotrin will now face Caledonia AIA in the Toyota Classic semi-finals.

‘Army’ thrashes Connection on penalties.
...a new Toyota Classic champion to be crowned.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague).

Defence Force came away 4-2 winners on penalties, as they knocked out defending champions Vibe CT 105 W Connection in the second game of a double header in the Toyota Classic quarter finals at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
The Tetron based men was on target from the spot while Connection’s stars Andre Toussaint and Brazilian Gefferson Goulart failed to get the ball at the back of the net, after the match ended in a goalless draw.
The game started in favor of the south based team and in the first minute of play Defence Force goalkeeper Kevin Graham had to make a crucial punch to deny a 20 yard Earl Jean free kick.
Connection attacked again in the 3rd minute with play maker Gefferson Goulart starting things off and Andrei Pacheco tapped a low pass wide to Andre Toussaint but he fired high from inside the 18 yard.
Defence Force goal keeper Graham showed off a couple of spectacular saves in the 18th, when he punched out a Pacheco left footed blast and then recovered well to push over bar a lob from Goulart.
The ‘Savonetta Boys’ got the ball in the back of the net in the 22nd minute, but the linesman ruled the Earl Jean goal from a William Da Silva Oliveira free kick offside.
The ‘Army Men building well from the back but failed to complete their plays in trhe final third. Captain Anton Pierre doing well marshalling his defence, in the 33rd minute his 25yard shot flashed well wide of goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams post.
Connection answered with a 27th minute item from Gefferson Goulart’s searching 30 yard free kick which found Hughton Hector who did well to get the better of defender Rawle Fletcher but his shot failed to threaten the ‘Army’ goal.
The ‘Army Men’ continued working hard front and back trying hard not to leave room for mistakes and gave Connection a 38th minute scare when striker Devon Jorsling received a through ball turned and shot from inside the penalty area but his effort sailed over bar. Jorsling failed to hit the target just 3 minutes later after receiving a Corey Rivers pass on top of the 18 yard area, but doing just enough to apply pressure on the Connection defence.
But W Connection’s Christopher Harvey headed just over bar from an Oliveira corner in the 45th minute making it the final attack before the break.
The ‘Savonetta boys’ started the second half with a promising 49th minute play from Hughton Hector who crossed into the penalty area but captain Earl Jean headed into the ground and it was easy pickings for goalkeeper Graham to collect.
The game was full of strong tackles, free kicks and fancy skills and proved to be a lot of excitement for the south venue supporters.
W Connection trying to please their local fans got close again in the 56th minute when Christopher Harvey headed into the ground and goalkeeper Graham had to do well to tip the shot wide.
But soon after the ‘Army’ looked to take control of the game with some long passing and wide plays that seemed to put the ‘Savonetta Boys’ on their back feet at times.
In the 59th minute unmarked Jerwyn Balthazar headed just wide from a Kevon Carter cross and in the 62nd minute Jorsling miskicked from just above the 6 yard putting his effort wide.
Carter had his shot on target in the 65th minute but goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams threw himself to push it wide.
The Anthony Barrington coached team pushing forward in the 70th minute got the best chance of the game when Balthazar broke the offside trap to receive a Jorsling low inside pass, went around goalkeeper Williams but poked his effort a hairline away from goal.
Connection’s Brazilian wingback Oliveira threatened the Defence Force perimeter with a 27 yard free kick which he blasted just low of the upright in the 77th minute as they tried hard to get the game winner. Eight minutes later Olivera had to be stretched off the field and replaced by Christian Almas after clashing with a Defence Force defender.
W Connection got the chance of the game in the 89th minute but striker Andre Toussaint missed the target after getting the better of Anton Pierre after a well worked play by Earl Jean and Goulart.
The ‘Army men’ got the last chance of the game from an Anton Pierre 30 yard free kick which powered past everyone even on running teammate Jorsling and out of play in added on injury time.
Moments after the grueling 90 minutes of the quarter final match referee Neil Brizan blew the final whistle to lead the teams on a penalty shootout.
W Connection was the first to kick and the first to miss when diving goalkeeper Graham, left the Connection fans worried, brilliantly saving striker Andre Toussaint’s spot kick. Connection’s chances ran sour when star midfielder and Brazilian player Gefferson Goulart missed the entire goal on the third kick and Defence Force failed to miss once. The ‘Army Men’ started their celebrations from as early as the Goulart miss and went on to win the match 4-2.

W Connection - Jan Michael Williams, William Da Silva Oliveira (Christian Almas 85th), Gefferson Goulart, Christopher Harvey, Brenton De Leon (Kern Cupid 75th), Hughton Hector, Andrei Pacheco (Nickcolson Thomas 66th), Jerren Johnson, Christian Viveros, Andre Toussaint, Earl Jean (capt).

Big Guns blame ‘poor finishing’ for Toyota Classic exit.
By: Randy Rando (ttproleague).

The top four Pro League teams all failed to make it past the quarter finals of this year’s edition of the Toyota Classic and each camp is placing the blame on their strikers failing to convert their chances on a night full of upsets.
Defending Toyota Classic Champion Vibe CT 105 W Connection and rivals CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh lost on penalties, while League leaders Joe Public and North East Stars went down in regulation time.
W Connection failed to get past Defence Force in the second match at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium and went down 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 full time score.
Champion coach Stuart Charles Fervier spoke with ‘ttproleague.com’ and said, "Although I am disappointed, I have to say it was a well fought game and both teams played well. The ‘Army’ came out and played with a lot of determination and I have to congratulate them."
"At the end of full time, I think the draw proved the Army lifted their game to a higher standard and played us a great game, although there weren’t any goals. We played a good game and had a couple of clear chances, but we didn’t convert and so did the Defence Force."
"I have to give them credit for doing better than us in the penalty shootout and I want to wish them the best for the rest of the tournament."
"Our finishing let us down in the match, and this happens in football from time to time. My players gave 100% on the field, but just didn’t get it right in front of goal. So now we just have to go back to the training field and continue to work on this part of our game," ended the former Trinidad and Tobago coach.
While at the Hasley Crawford Stadium San Juan Jabloteh also made their exit via the penalty spot to Superstar Rangers, after they batted to a 1-1 draw after fulltime.
A disappointed Terry Fenwick told ‘ttproleague.com’, "Generally speaking, we dominated the game and like in the past most teams would set themselves defensive against us and try to work on the counter attack. After ten minutes into the game the ball bounced awkwardly over goalkeeper Brian James giving them an unbelievable flop goal."
"We controlled seventy five percent of the field for the entire 90 minutes and played the better game. I think that we did well to limit them to the one goal but just didn’t get our chances in the back of the net."
"They came out with a lot of confidence in the penalty shootout and their goal keeper did well to deny Whitley, which was the deciding factor."
"Congrat’s to the lads and I hope that they go on to win the Toyota Classic trophy," ended the Englishman.
League Leaders Joe Public was edged out 1-0 by Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA in the second match at the Hasley Crawford Stadium and made their exit in the quarterfinals just as they did in this year’s edition of the First Citizens Cup.
Coach Michael Mc Commie sees his team’s loss as a positive angle and believes they now have more time to prepare for the remaining League games.
Mc Commie said, "We were very unfortunate after creating most of the clear cut chances and holding on to a bigger percentage of the ball possession."
"I think we played the better game although we made one or two defensive errors. The one half chance Caledonia got late in the game, they capitalized on it. I think because of a lack in concentration from the defenders."
"Congratulations to the Caledonia and I wish them good luck; as for us, I think it’s time to regroup as we have more time to prepare and concentrate on the League title. The guys are really disappointed with the loss and it’s my job to get them focused on the League. Maybe this is a blessing for us, as one door closes another opens," ended Mc Commie.
First Citizens Cup beaten finalist North East Stars failed to get past United Petrotrin in their quarterfinal clash going down 2-1, and also made a surprise exit.
Manager of the team Daryl Mahabir said, "I think we gave Petrotrin too much room and allowed them to build confidence as the game went on."
"We played a very attractive brand of football, building a lot from the back and creating some chances but just didn’t score. The defence made a couple of mistakes that gave away two easy goals, one of which I think was a handball."
"We shouldn’t be making these defensive errors in a knockout competition and we paid for our mistakes after having the better game. Petrotrin used the chances and got the better of us at the end of the day," ended the Sangre Grande team owner.
Local diamonds on show.
Pro League's Classic teaser.
By: Lasana Liburd (Express).

Trinidad and Tobago national football team coach Wim Rijsbergen was the most illustrious spectator at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday night for a Pro League Toyota Classic quarterfinal double header.
Rijsbergen, a former Dutch World Cup defender, kept his own counsel when questioned by the Express on the quality of the fixture and the players who took part.
In the past, he reiterated that there is "much work to be done" in the local game and his assertion seems beyond reproach.
But, after a scrappy 2-1 win for the "Soca Warriors" over Panama this month, he also waxed lyrical about the benefits of polishing diamonds. Perhaps he noted a few on Friday.
The results themselves were encouraging for the game although quarter-final losers CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh and Joe Public might not agree.
Jabloteh, the defending champions, commanded much of the fixture against Superstar Rangers but still bowed out on penalty kicks while there was little difference between Public and their victors and eastern rivals, Caledonia AIA.
In both cases, it was a triumph for determination and belief over club history and financial strength. But there was also the suggestion that the Pro League actually did have enough talent to spread around.
There were no outstanding individual performances-although Caledonia striker Nigel Pierre was pretty close-but that did not mean potential was absent. Diamonds in the dirt? There were a few.
Even hardened football observers experience a flutter at the sight of Rangers midfielder Kerwyn "Hardest" Jemmott in football gear.
Surely no national player had as many "second chances" as the ex-Malick enigma. But his frame was lean and his passes were still clean.
The Jabloteh midfield is no pushover. Aurtis Whitley was not overrun by England's celebrated pairing of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard at the 2006 World Cup while Trent Noel featured as a holding midfielder in two of Rijsbergen's three outings thus far.
Yet, Jemmott regularly created space to work neat passes even as his teammates struggled to keep possession. Late in the second half, Hardest had enough in his tank to venture forward and rap the Jabloteh upright with a crisp drive.
The gifted midfielder's penchant for sudden leaves of absence means that he struggles to win the trust of local coaches let alone international ones. But, if Rijsbergen insists on classifying players as either stones or diamonds, Jemmott is overqualified for the former tag.
Whitley was not at his best on Friday but has little to prove beyond commitment. His versatility and on-field personality alone demands his inclusion at international level and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF) must provide a proper explanation if he misses out on an excursion to Austria in mid-November.
Nigel Daniel, a versatile full back, was one of Jabloteh's best two performers on the night with his characteristic eagerness to impose himself on the match. Winger Jason Marcano shone too.
Brave and pro-active, Marcano acquitted himself well and tormented Rangers' full backs with his pace and dribbling skills. It is a potent combination if married to sound decision making and tactical awareness.
The evening's second match was more balanced and offered Public and Caledonia's players the opportunity to showcase their talent within a solid structure.
It was the "Eastern Lions" who seemed to relish the stage more. Pierre was certainly in the mood. Beefy but graceful, the former St Anthony's College star transfer from Queen's Park CC to Public-almost a decade ago-was possibly the most acrimonious move in the history of the local professional game.
On Friday, Pierre gave a glimpse of the talent that made him such a coveted player and left him with an enviable international record.
Pierre has 24 goals-including three World Cup qualifying strikes-from 56 national games and, in 2001, was the last player to outscore all-time record goal scorer Stern John in a calendar year with meaningful competition. John's other potential successors, Kenwyne Jones, Jason Scotland and Cornell Glen, have a combined total of 19 goals from 92 national caps.
Pierre is not the same player he was five years ago but then neither is John and it has not stopped him from racking up the appearances and goals. His whipped right side cross led to the game's lone item from substitute Nigel Codrington. He might relish a bigger assignment.
Whitley was 28 with only 15 caps under his belt when Beenhakker resurrected his international career to good effect for player and country last year. In comparison, a 27-year-old Pierre is hardly an outrageous gamble.
Densill Theobald, a fixture under previous boss Leo Beenhakker, also played his part in pacing AIA to victory and looked trim and lively. He has a kindred spirit in utility player Conrad Smith who shared his appreciation for possession and rapid ball movement although the latter was replaced in the second half as Caledonia's midfield fell flat.
At times, Caledonia and Public looked ready for take off.
Public defended resolutely but veteran playmaker Arnold Dwarika lacked the consistent support of his attacking partners. Caledonia played in spurts but rarely managed the cohesion to control proceedings after a promising start. It was not sensational stuff but an interesting night out all the same for a few hundred supporters. Maybe food for thought for a rookie national coach as well.

Jabloteh produce Classic.
...clash with Joe Public in final.
By: Ian Prescott (Express).

The first mistake Defence Force made was allowing Cyd Gray's speculative long pass to reach Peter Byers, CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh's goal-scoring terror.
Then, it all went downhill. Defence Force's Akil Edwards upended the burly Antiguan, resulting in a penalty and getting himself sent off in the process.
Edwards raised his hand, pleading his innocence, but referee Lee Davis showed no hesitation. Penalty!!!
Trent Noel, Jabloteh's dead-ball specialist, competently converted the spot-kick, giving Jabloteh a 2-1 advantage in the 77th minute.
Who, at that stage, would believe that such a close contest would result in a good, old-fashioned rout?
By the final whistle, Jabloteh ran away emphatic 6-1 winners, scoring five goals in the final 15 minutes at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar on Friday night.
They now meet bmobile Joe Public in Friday's final from 8.30 p.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, after the Eastern Lions edged Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA 1-0 on a 17th minute Kerry Baptiste goal in the second semi-final.
Commenting afterwards on his team's emphatic victory, Terry Fenwick, Jabloteh's English coach, felt he had the more talented and fitter players.
And he also admitted they fully exploited their one-man advantage.
Once given the numerical superiority, Jabloteh began running at pace at the Army defenders. Near the end, it was all exhibition stuff.
Jason Marcano put Jabloteh into a 3-1 advantage in the 80th, tucking away Noel's corner-kick at the far post.
Then, five minutes later, Dwayne Jack, the Tobagonian defender, scored the best goal of his life, drilling a left footer from about 35 metres out and almost ripping through the top of the Defence Force net.
Had goalie Kevin Graham gotten a touch, he might have been in hospital today.
Two of Jabloteh's goals even came in the three minutes added on for injuries.
First, Noel played a combination with a teammate, walked through the Army backline and stroked the ball away from Graham.
It was then 5-1 and finally Elton John guided a header down the centre of goal, after combining with Noel and another teammate.
After the game, Defence Force coach Kerry Jameson was said to be in a foul mood and missed the post-match media conference.
But before the bottom fell out of his squad's performance, Jameson must have been confident of reaching the final.
Early on, both teams entertained the sizeable crowd by holding the ball and playing good football.
Byers put the San Juan club ahead in the 12th minute, clinically side-footing Gregory Gayson's pass with the left foot and beating the dive of Graham.
But Defence Force rallied to be level at 1-1 in the 44th minute, Anton Joseph's stab deflected into goal past Cleon John, the former Army custodian.
Then came the classic football in the last ten minutes. Who knew Jabloteh had so many fans? Singing the popular reggae song: "She's Royal" at the end, their supporters were certainly treated to a royal performance.

Eastern Lions crowned 2007 Toyota Classic.
...champions in dramatic style.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague).

Ninety minutes plus and Roen Nelson hammered high into the roof of San Juan Jabloteh net for a 2-1 Joe Public win in the final of the 2007 Toyota Classic competition at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday night.
The last few minutes of the match was the highlight of the night when in the 90th minute Jabloteh’s Khaleem Hyland equalized for a 1-1 score, only to see their chance erased shortly afterwards by the Nelson goal.
With an all north clash, the Port of Spain venue was chosen as the battle ground of this year’s final where the winner took home $35,000 and the runners-up $20,000.
Former San Juan Jabloteh midfielder Kerry Baptiste opened the scoring for the ‘Lions’ with a deflected free kick in the second period sending the Joe Public fans wild with astonishment.
Coach Terry Fenwick of San Juan Jabloteh had predicted a tough final but the English born coach never forecasted going under to the Michael Mc Comie coached ‘Lions’.
Defeat was hard to accept for the San Juan based club, whose players left the pitch without collecting their medals in the official handout.
The opening moments proved nothing but a harsh tackling game with nothing of real substance which set the stage for a very hard match for referee Neil Brizan who later had to dish out a few cards, which included a red.
Jabloteh managed to edge Joe Public on forward movement but only had a 30 yard try by Jason Cudjoe which sailed wide in the 11th minute to show for their efforts.
Two minutes later Joe Public’s veteran attacking midfielder Arnold Dwarika curled wide of goalkeeper Cleon John’s post from above the area.
The match ran through with a few insertions of goalscoring chances and one of those came in the 22nd minute when Jabloteh’s Khaleem Hyland had a crack from 30 yards out which lost pace as and sunk just wide of goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa’s upright.
Brizan issued his first yellow of the match to Trent Noel for a tackle on Arnold Dwarika who had to be stretchered off for treatment but returned shortly afterwards.
Goalkeeper Cleon John pulled off a brilliant one handed save to push out a Lyndon Andrews crack on goal from just outside the area in the 25th minute.
Andrews then received a booking in the 31st minute for a crunching tackle on midfielder Jason Marcano as the hard tackling game progressed on.
Joe Public’s Kerry Baptiste muscled off Trent Noel to punch wide off the Cleon John’s near post in the 34th minute as the tit for tat continued.
Peter Byers had a tame looping header in the 41st minute wrapped by Figueroa after a Jason Marcano cross ball, but prior to that Joe Public’s Kerry Baptiste and former Jabloteh player failed to punish his old club after sliding just short of Gregory Richardson neat low cross.
In the 43rd minute Lester Peltier’s effort swooshed just wide of goalkeeper Figueroa’s crossbar after turning his marker well above the area causing woos around the stadium but that was all the fans saw for the remaining minutes of the half.
Nine minutes into the second Jabloteh’s Cleon John made a good block on Seon Power’s point blank header as the match turned from a scrappy to more of a constructive twist.
Substitute Ataulla Guerra created an opening for Jason Marcano before whipping wide of the far post in Jabloteh’s best opening chance of the second period.
Joe Public found a bit more stride in their forward movement than the San Juan based team but just wasn’t able to create clear cut chances.
Jabloteh’s Cleon John came up huge another time making a low diving save to push out a 66th minute 25 yard Roen Nelson smash for a corner.
But in the 76th minute Cleon John created what could be called the foundation of Joe Public victory.
The Jabloteh custodian collected a high ball outside his area forcing referee Neil Brizan to award a free kick.
No other than Kerry Baptiste took the free kick and punished his former club after it deflected off Trent Noel and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage in favor of the “Eastern Lions’.
Desperate for a comeback, Fenwick introduced striker Shandell Samuel but he only lasted ten odd minutes after receiving a direct red card from referee Neil Brizan for a foul on Joe Public captain Dale Saunders in the 85th minute leaving Jabloteh down to ten for the remaining minutes.
Despite down to ten men, Jabloteh’s Khaleem Hyland struck on the 90th minute, heading past goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa from a left sided cross ball to level the scores at 1-1.
But that didn’t last as Jabloteh’s fight came to an end shortly afterwards in added on time when Jamaican striker Roen Nelson blasted from inside the area to beat Cleon John for a 2-1 finish—Joe Public lifting their first knockout trophy since their return to the TT Pro League last season.

keeper George saves Army for Toyota Classic third.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague).

A splendid performance by goalkeeper Selwyn George from the penalty spot helped Defence Force to a 3-2 penalty win over Caledonia AIA in the Toyota Classic third place play-off on Friday evening at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
George made an error in the second period allowing Caledona the opening item in what finished a 1-1 score in regulation time.
But the stocky built goalie produced three saves from the spot denying Abdallah Phillip, Dwight Peters and Marvin Oliver to take away the Toyota Classic third place prize money of $10,000.
Caledonia who missed out in the final of the First Citizens Cup last month, walked away with $5,000 for their efforts in fourth place.
Defence Force should have taken the lead from as early as the 7th minute but Kevon Carter first time effort from Michael Edwards’ cross got past goalkeeper Jhony Ortiz Cardona but crashed off the upright and back into play.
Caledonia the had their first attempt on goal six minutes later with a stretched effort by wingback Sterling Arjoon which sailed over.
But less than a minute later striker Carlyle Mitchell sliding attempt to meet an Anthony Abrams low cross into the Defence Force area was in vain after which was a great goal scoring opportunity.
Defence Force’s Devon Jorsling had a one on one with goalkeeper Cardona after a cross inside the area by Kevon Carter but the ‘Army’ striker disappointingly loosed out to the Caledonia custodian on the 20 minute mark.
Caledonia using the opportunity to seed a few second choice players without regulars Hayden Tinto, Charles Pollard, Howard Lowe, Walter Moore found difficulties getting past the ‘Army’ backline.
Army had another good chance when point-man Richard Roy swung a low cross inside the Caledonia area only to see teammates Kevon Carter and Devon Jorsling making cross overs in what should have been shooting opportunities.
A few minutes later in the 31st Caledonia’s Johny Ortiz Cardona denied Jorsling at close range with just the keeper to beat.
Cardona was brilliant again pushing over a powerful 24 yard free kick by Ronald Boyce in the 34th minute.
Defence Force’s Devon Jorsling miserable afternoon continued after he was unmarked in the Caledonia area and headed over from Carter’s right sided cross in the 43rd minute for the last attempt on goal in the first period and his last of the match after he was replaced after the break.
The second half was a bit slower than the first but had a couple of high rise moments with striker Anthony Abrams pushing an attempt over the Defence Force goal in the 51st under pressure by Christopher Durity.
Durity the had a low blast from 22yards out eleven minutes later to beat a full stretched Cardona but for the second time the ‘Soldiers’ were denied by the woodwork after his shot crashed off the far upright.
But in the 64th minute Marvin Oliver shot the ‘Stallions’ ahead after goalkeeper Selwyn George made a clumsy advance out of his area for a long ball to beat him and his defender allowing the Caledonia midfielder open space and an open net to finish into despite a late effort by Anton Pierre to clear off the line.
Caledonia with the 1-0 goal in hand saw Coach Jamaal Shabazz introduce fresh legs up front five minutes after their goal replacing Anthony Abrams and Carlyle Mitchell with Nigel Codrington and Daniel Kerry.
‘Army’ then leveled the score 1-1 in the 73rd minute when substitute Sherman Phillip collected a right sided cross to turn and shoot past goalkeeper Cardona causing the remainder of the match a heated affair.
In added on time Richard Roy after a neat exchange of passes above the area shot just wide of Cardona’s far post in the last best chance forcing the third place play-off into penalties.
Keston Williams opened the scoring before teammate Christian Baptiste clipped the crossbar for a miss, but Sherman Philip and Richard Roy completed the scoring to have ‘Army’ a 3-2 win. Defence Force also holding a positive result ahead of their FA Trophy second round clash with Caledonia on November 11.

Jabloteh trounce Tobago.
By: Lasana Liburd (Express).

Clico San Juan Jabloteh motored into the Toyota Classic Cup semi-finals yesterday evening with an emphatic 5-0 win over Tobago United at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar.

The T&T Pro League and Lucozade Big Six champions are undefeated since a 3-0 loss to St Ann's Rangers at the same venue on November 11-four weeks and nine games ago. An upset never looked likely yesterday.

It might prove a tame end to a less than stellar spell in the top flight from the representatives from the "Sister Isle" who showed up with just 14 players and lacked the legs and inspiration to cope.

Tobago captain and marquee player Collie Hercules was starved of possession in threatening areas and the contest was effectively over when Willis Plaza shot Jabloteh ahead in the 20th minute. It was a worthy game-winner.

Plaza, one of five teenagers in Jabloteh's starting line-up, surprised Tobago goalkeeper Richard Reynolds with a firm low left footer from distance that flew into the far corner. The young attacking midfielder was instrumental in Jabloteh's second too, although Tobago had two opportunities to clear before Plaza set up striker Jerol Forbes for a close-range finish.

It was Forbes' 19th goal this season and Tobago stopper Jamal Jack helped him to number 20 with some suicidal defending as Forbes stripped the defender to tap home Jabloteh's third, two minutes before the interval.

Forbes completed his hat-trick in the 50th minute after being sent clear by Cyrano Glen, younger brother of 2006 World Cup standout and Jabloteh teammate Cornell Glen.

Jabloteh coach Terry Fenwick withdrew captain Trent Noel at the interval and Forbes was also rested before the hour mark. They will surely have more important assignments within the next nine days.

Jason Marcano stayed on, though, and produced his second late item in successive games with a neat "banana" shot that curled around the outstretched hands of Tobago's substitute goalkeeper Javid Joseph and nestled in the far corner.

It might be a good time for Marcano to request a raise judging by the ecstatic reaction to his goal by the Jabloteh board members. Of course, they might counter that Marcano's salary already covers the occasional brilliant goal.

But are Tobago United value for money?

The Trinidad and Tobago Pro League must make a decision soon on the fate of the domestic league's recurring whipping boys.

Yesterday's Games

San Juan Jabloteh 5 (Willis Plaza 22, Jerol Forbes 30, 43, 50, Jason Marcano 88) v Tobago United 0

Joe Public 1 (Gregory Richardson 45) v St Ann's Rangers 2 (Devon Modeste 49, Marvin James 52)

United Petrotrin 0 v Caledonia AIA 2 (Densill Theobald 51, Kareem Joseph 80)

W Connection 1 (Igor Santos 65) v North East Stars 2 (John Stewart 27, Brent Sancho 39)

I eh know about senior team yet, but I'm sure he would jump on that if just to redeem his sh*t reputation in England.

He seems to be able to make the youngsters work for him.

The man is a ca-ca-hole, but he can produce.

Only thing he can't do is make Cornell Glen score more goals than Jerol Forbes. Right Palos? :o ;)
