'Stars', AIA in Toyota semis
Ian Prescott iprescott@trinidadexpress.com

Sunday, December 7th 2008

scored winner: Brent Sancho
On a rainy Friday night in Marabella, when very few dared to venture outside, a little team from Sangre Grande fought and brought down giants.

Sounds like fairy-tale? Well, for North East Stars it must have been after the Sangre Grande village team ended W Connection's 26-match unbeaten sequence by booting the 2005 winners and first-ever champions of the Toyota Classic out at the quarter-final stage of the 2008 competition two nights ago.

Stars built a comfortable early lead, and doggedly held a slender 2-1 advantage to the end, even after the expulsion of their Guyanese striker Randolph Jerome left them a player short for 48 minutes. They now face St Ann's Rangers in next Friday's semi final round, while last year's defeated finalists CLICO San Juan Jabloteh will take on Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA - who also beat United Petrotrin 2-0 at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium on Friday.

Jerome's aggression was typical of the commitment which the "Sangre Grande" Stars brought into their game against W Connection. And after throwing himself around a couple times, he picked up a second yellow card from referee Russell Cassamir and was ejected. Obviously dejected, Jerome only reluctantly left the field. But his comrades fought on.

Stars survived a testing opening period in which W Connection's Colombian Oscar Torijano looked like opening them up on a couple of occasions. Like, when the Colombian blew by defender Brent Sancho, but unfortunately ran out of turf before getting a shot on goal. And keeper Andrew Durant was sharp to the danger and intercepted a cross at his near post when after a similar drive, Torijano looked to pick out lively St Kitts & Nevis midfielder George Issac in a central position.

But through Jerome and on-loan Rochester Rhinos midfielder Leslie "Tiger" Fitzpatrick, NE Stars began attacking as well, and soon shocked the home fans when taking a comfortable 2-0 lead before the half ended.

First, John Stewart stunned the Southerners who have become unaccustomed to losing this season. Stewart, had Stars ahead at 1-0 when putting a rebound in the back of the W Connection net in the 27th minute after keeper Miguel Lloyd had made the initial block from Sean Cooper's shot. And in the 39th, W Connection were in further trouble when the nervous keeper tipped Marc Leslie's corner kick onto the head of veteran T&T defender Sancho who nodded the ball into the net.

Shock reverberated around the stadium, since almost no one could recall W Connection ever trailing by two goals so early in a match. Between goals, they might have been level just two minutes after conceding had keeper Durant not turned Torijano's shot around the post, after the Colombian raced onto Houghon Hector's through ball. And Durant, a tireless worker, especially in the second half, also had to bring off a double save soon after to preserve his team's lead.

Coming out minus Jerome at the start of the second half, Stars must have known they were about to face a character examination. As expected, Connection took the game to them. But Durant always seemed there to get his body in the way of shots, and on one occasion, made gathering a 30-metre shot by Brazilian Ronaldo Viana look like child's play. However, Connection brought on the added firepower of Brazilian attacker Igor Santos. It finally did the trick when, with almost his first touch, the substitute ghosted into the penalty area and beat Durant with a low shot to the back of the net in the 65rd to make the score 2-1.

Issac had the chance to pull the home team level five minutes later but did not have the power to beat the NE Stars custodian.

And within the final 10 minutes, Christian Viveros, the outstanding, young Colombian utility player, missed the best chance to pull W Connection even when he headed Issac's cross onto the woodwork before it went out. Stars also generated one good chance from Akeil Guevera's header but Lloyd made the save. And even though they faced plenty pressure down the stretch, N E Stars held firm to pick up a well-won semi-final spot next Friday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium. Even fairy-tales come through sometimes.

FRIDAY'S TOYOTA CLASSIC QUARTER-FINAL RESULTS:

(Manny Ramjohn Stadium)

North East Stars 2 (John Stewart, 27th; Brent Sancho, 39th) W Connection 1 (Igor Santos, 65th)

Five-star Jabloteh stroll into Classic semis.

Five-star Jabloteh stroll into Classic semis.
By: Lasana Liburd (tnttimes.com).

Defending champions San Juan Jabloteh strolled into the Toyota Classic Competition quarter-final round this evening with a comprehensive 5-0 spanking of Defence Force’s Super League squad at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar.

The soldiers never dropped their heads but they were hopelessly outmatched and must have spent much of the last half hour praying for the final whistle.

There are different opinions of what constitutes sport—as anyone who has covered slugs with salt or spent an afternoon relieving rain flies of their wings falls might admit. And those fans of a good mauling would have been royally entertained in Malabar yesterday.

“Target practice allyuh!” yelled an excited Jabloteh supporter, as a Noel Williams effort shook the Defence Force crossbar. “Is food we get!”

It is certainly true that Jabloteh have not enjoyed many free meals this season.

Four trophies have been distributed already this year—including the Caribbean Club Championship crown—and yet the “San Juan Kings” remain empty headed. The year, 2009, started with a stunning blow as Jabloteh’s title sponsor, CL Financial, crumbled while the subsequent departures of former head coach Terry Fenwick and several key players including ex-captain and 2008 Pro League Player of the Year, Trent Noel, might have increased their sense of loss.

Thirty-eight-year-old rookie Jabloteh coach Earl Jean pointed to his team’s qualification for the 2010 Caribbean Club Championship as an important achievement for this season. But Jean admitted his desire for a trophy.

“We qualified for CONCACAF for next year,” the former St Lucia international told the TnT Times, “but we want to come out of this season with something. We cannot afford to bask in past glories.”

Nice report Lasana !!!

And thanks for putting the line ups, subs and shirt numbers.

The only thing missing is, in what minute did Jabloteh score ? I think Travis Mulraine is missing and Williams first goal ? in what times did they score.

This Noel Williams fella on fire now. He scoring in every game. For a left back or left wing he decent.

I also like the fact that Earl Jean tell them fellas (Hector & Jerrel) straight up on how dotish they play. They need to step up especially Jerrel as his future is bright and he needs to grab it with both hands.

Jabloteh in Toyota semis against Ma Pau, North East against Lions.

Jabloteh in Toyota semis against Ma Pau, North East against Lions.

Misses by W Connection’s Romauld Aguillera and Hughtun Hector on kicks from the penalty spot on Tuesday night at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium saw San Juan Jabloteh advance into the semi-final round of the 2010-2011 Toyota Classic with a 5-4 penalty win after a 2-2 draw.

And at the Marvin Lee Stadium, in another quarterfinal clash, DIRECTV North East Stars defeated Defence Force 2-1 with Jamaican forward Sean Fraser putting the Sangre Grande club ahead in the 76th minute and then cushioned by a Keston Williams own goal in the 81st minute.

Defender Michael Edwards pulled back a goal for the Soldiers in the 88th minute, however it wasn’t enough to avoid exit.

The Stars will meet Joe Public Super League outfit in the first semi-final round clash on Friday 18 February at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Joe Public, coached by Rajesh Latchoo, who is also the head coach of the Joe Public Pro League club, registered a 2-1 win over Police FC in the first quarterfinal clash at the Marvin Lee Stadium with goals by Devon King and Julien Landeau.

As for Jabloteh, the San Juan club will meet bitter rivals Ma Pau SC in the second semi-final clash at the Malabar venue.

Ma Pau, just as Jabloteh, earned their semi-final spot on kicks from the penalty spot 5-4 but following a goalless draw against Caledonia AIA.

Jabloteh thought they secured their semi-final spot in regulation time with goals by Karlon Murray and substitute Johan Peltier, however that thought was erased by an injury-time double by Connection’s Hector forcing the encounter to be decided by kicks from the spot.

Hector was the liveliest of the Connection players from the start and in the 21st minute he forced a fingertip save by Cleon John from distance.

However in the 26th minute Murray headed Jabloteh in front jumping high at the far post to meet what seemed to be a harmless cross and put it over goalkeeper Murilo Da Costa for a 1-0 advantage.

Connection's Clyde Leon then missed the target when he launched Kemuel Rivers' cross from the left well overbar in the 32nd minute.

End to end action continued and six minutes later the Connection Brazilian goalie had to pull off a fine save denying Jason Marcano who attempted to find the far post after a strong run.

Jabloteh was later reduced to ten-men on the hour mark when goalscorer Murray picked up his second yellow for a foul on Matthew Bartholomew at the edge of the area.

In the 64th minute Jabloteh were on the defence when Hector raced down the right and whipped in a cross towards the far post to find Pacheco, however the finishing touch saw the ball into the side netting to goalkeeper John's delight.

Hector was at it again moments later when he provided another dangerous cross, however Leon guided his attempt overbar—as the T&T international miserable night continued.

Jabloteh then cushioned themselves in five minutes from time when Marcano made one of his ‘never give up’ runs down the right weaving and muscling his way past three Connection players before finding Peltier inside the area, and the substitute made no mistake beating goalkeeper Da Costa for a 2-0 score.

But in injury time, Hector blasted a freekick past goalkeeper John to reduce the deficit 2-1 and then leveled the scores 2-2 moments later.

John made a superb blockout against Bartholomew at point blank however the free ball fell to a handful of Connection players allowing Hector a knock in.

Hector was the hero of his side but not on kicks from the penalty spot when  in the sixth kick he placed his shot off target allowing Jabloteh to celebrate the 5-4 win.

Ince saves Ma Pau for a Toyota semifinal spot, Police knocked out.

Former England based goalkeeper Clayton Ince was in flying form on Tuesday night when he pulled off saves on kicks from the penalty spot to help Ma Pau SC advance into the semi-final round of the 2010-2011 Toyota Classic.

The Ma Pau assistant coach/goalkeeper made saves against Caledonia AIA’s Conrod Smith, Nuru Abdullah Muhammed and Stephan David to earn his side a 5-4 kicks from the penalty spot victory following a goalless draw in the first of a quarterfinal double header at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

The former Walsall goalie’s voice was heard throughout the goalless quarterfinal clash as he marshaled the Woodbrook based Pro League from between the uprights before going on to save his side on kicks from the spot after seven kicks and book a place in the semi-final against San Juan Jabloteh on Friday 18 February at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Simultaneously at the Marvin Lee Stadium, in the first clash of another quarterfinal double header, Joe Public Super League advanced into the semi-final round (against DIRECTV North East Stars) after defeating Police FC 2-1.

Former Jabloteh youth player Julien Landeau scored the winner in the 53rd minute for the Rajesh Latchoo(who is also the head coach for the Joe Public Pro League club which suffered a 1-0 defeat in the Round of 16) coached Super League outfit.

Joe Public opened the scoring through Devon King in the 16th minute however the scores were leveled before the break with Police midfielder Kaaron Foster finding the back of the net in the 44th minute.

In the Ma Pau, Caledonia clash there were little goalmouth action with midfielder Densill Theobald’s red card sending off proving the highlight of regulation time.

The Morvant/Laventille club, Caledonia, was reduced to ten-men in the 32nd minute when referee Neil Brizan awarded Thoebald the direct red for what the match official adjudged to be a stamp on opposing midfielder Kerry Noray following a challenge in the middle.

Seconds into the second period Caledonia's Akim Armstrong struck the side netting and on the hour mark Ma Pau also failed to hit the target.

Seven minutes from time Caledonia's Jamaican goalkeeper Kevin Graham had to pull off a spectacular save to deny Dwane James before his defence cleared the loose ball in another rare attempt on goal.

In other quarterfinal results North East Stars defeated Defence Force 2-1 at the Marvin Lee Stadium with Jamaican forward Sean Fraser putting the Sangre Grande club ahead in the 76th minute and then cushioned by a Keston Williams own goal in the 81st minute.

Defender Michael Edwards pulled back a goal for the Soldiers in the 88th minute, however it wasn’t enough to avoid exit.

And in the second clash at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, 10-men San Juan Jabloteh were made to work for a 5-4 kicks from the penalty spot victory over rivals W Connection after a 2-2 draw.

Midfielder Hughtun Hector pulled back two goals for Connection in injury time to level the scores after Jabloteh’s Karlon Murray (26th minute) and Johan Peltier (85th minute) had the San Juan club ahead 2-0 at the end of normal time.

However Hector failed to keep his side alive in the sixth kick when he missed the entire target to hand Jabloteh a 5-4 victory and a place in the semi-final against Ma Pau.

Tobago teams progress in Toyota Classic

Both Phoenix and Stokely Vale progressed to the next round of the Toyota Classic last night.

In games rearranged to kick off at 4pm to allow the clubs time to catch flights back to Tobago, Phoenix overcame Joe Public 3-1 after going a goal behind and Stokely Vale also beat fellow Super League opposition, WASA, when they also came from a goal down to win with 3 goals in the last 20 minutes.

Generally, the Toyota Classic kicked off with some exciting matches. North East Stars fell a goal behind to Westside before banging home 4 goals in reply, notably with Kaydion Gabriel, just released from the U-23 squad, making his point with 2 goals.

However, in a hard fought game which saw 3 red cards, Westside never gave up and scored 2 more goals to give the North East fans a tense final 10 minutes.

Other Pro League clubs doling out defeats to Super League clubs were San Juan Jabloteh, Caledonia AIA and St Anns Rangers.

Jabloteh smashed 5 goals past Real Maracas, with Willis Plaza adding to his impressive total this season, with a hat trick, with Hector Sam and Luke Gullick adding goals.

St Ann's Rangers won by a single Devon James own goal against Eagles, while Caledonia had to wait until the 75th minute for Trayon Bobb to settle the match against Club Sando.

Pro League leaders, T&TEC and 2nd place W Connection will now enter the fray with the next round taking place on Friday 25th at Mannie Ramjohn and Saturday 26th at Larry Gomes.

The Semi Final takes place on 2nd December with the final on December 9th.

It was noted that with games at 4pm and 7pm, the double headers left supporters with nothing to do for a hour between games.

At Larry Gomes, there was no entertainment provided, not even a DJ, and there was no signage or promotion, save for a Toyota banner erected by North East Stars.

Many supporters left after the first game, however the North East Stars Estrellas made up for lack of numbers with their non stop chants, banter and general noisemaking throughout the match.

With the next rounds taking place on the weekend, hopefully there will be greater numbers attending.

Jabloteh crush Maracas, Caledonia edge Sando
ttproleague.com

Adam’s Construction San Juan Jabloteh cruised into the quarter-final round of the 2011 Toyota Classic with a more than comfortable 5-0 preliminary round win over Super League club Real Maracas at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Striker Willis Plaza found the back of the net three times for the Earl Carter coached side while former England based forward Hector Sam and England born Luke Gullick notched a goal each.

Jabloteh meets cross-town rivals Caledonia AIA of Morvant/Laventille in the quarter-final round on Saturday 26 November from 8pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Guyanese winger Trayon Bobb netted the lone item in the 75th minute to hand Caledonia a 1-0 hard-fought win over Super League’s Club Sando.

Sando had a couple opportunities through Trevon Mitchell, one of which he forced a low save out of goalkeeper Zane Coker with a wonderful half volley just two minutes inside.

And in the fourth minute on the other end, Caledonia’s Abdallah Phillips was denied by the crossbar and in the seventh wingback Kareem Joseph was denied by goalkeeper Alexei Julien.

Caledonia continued to create the opportunities with Makesi Lewis hitting inches wide on two occasions and teenager Trayon Bobb denied by the upright in the 16th minute.

In the 26th minute Club Sando’s Andy London did everything right on a breakaway against the Morvant/Laventille club defense and eluded goalkeeper Coker, but failed to let off a shot towards an open net.

Caledonia’s Keyon Edwards who picked up a knock in the first half, was probably the most disappointing player on the night after finding himself in a number of openings, but just wasn’t his usual self.

But at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Jabloteh’s most lethal forward this season, Willis Plaza netted his first of the hattrick in the 9th minute followed by Sam in the 34th minute and Gullick in the 36th minute for a 3-0 score at the break.

Plaza spared no mercy against Maracas netting late items in the 81st and 85th minutes to complete his hattrick.

By the way, there was a camera filming at Larry Gomes, but I'm not sure who it was. I'd love to see the footage. North Easts first goal came from superb passing and the second goal was an absolute screaming volly from the edge of the box.

Admittedly, I am bias, though I try to remain neutral! On the other hand, I see people here shouting about fantastic goals from UK, USA and probably Mongolia too, so why shouldn't I shout about a fantastic goal I saw? In fact, its actually far more important than the EPL, Serie A or whatever, because its a Trini, playing in T&T. Not enough people give the ProLeague credit (the football, not the administration!)

And yes, we shipped 3 goals but still won, and guess what, that makes us better than Arsenal, who lost 4-3 to bottom of the table Blackburn, so thanks Sam, you just confirmed North East are better than The Gunners (I wish  :rotfl:)

Connection ousts Phoenix, T&TEC survives Stokley scare in Toyota quarterfinals.

Connection ousts Phoenix in Toyota Classic quarterfinals.
ttproleague.com.

A well struck set piece by Kemuel Rivers separated W Connection from Tobago Phoenix on Friday night handing the Stuart Charles Fevrier coached side a 1-0 win over the Tobagonians in the quarter-final round of the 2011 Toyota Classic at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Phoenix coming off a 3-1 win in the preliminary round against fellow Super League outfit and leaders Joe Public, failed to rise out of the flames a second consecutive time.

Meantime Connection advanced into the semi-final round carded for Friday 02 December and will meet the quarter-final winner between San Juan Jabloteh and Caledonia AIA which will play on Saturday 26 November from 8pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Connection was denied in the 13th minute by goalkeeper Jeffrey Delpeche pushing behind an effort by Kerron Cummings from outside the area and four minutes later teenaged left winger Neil Benjamin tested the Phoenix goalie with a low shot on the slippery surface which saw Delpeche spill on the first attempt before gathering on the second grab.

Delpeche was called into action again in the 22nd minute fisting away a blistering cross by Rennie Britto before the rebound was hammered well overbar by Hashim Arcia from inside the area.

Connection finally broke Delpeche in the 29th minute for a 1-0 advantage when Rivers’ left-footed strike from a free-kick some 24 yards out lifted over the wall and past the gloves of Phoenix’s goalie.

Kevin Keith was adjudged to have foul Kern Cupid by referee Michael London who awarded Connection the free-kick.

And two minutes from the break and a good buildup by the Tobagonians, Darren Mitchell who tested Jan Michael Williams with a tame effort and another shot wide of the far post earlier, was on target rifling a volley but unable to beat the Connection goalie.

Connection failed to add another eleven minutes inside the second period through substitute Matthew Bartholomew, who replaced Keon Quow at the break.

Bartholomew failed to bury a strike when he met Arcia’s cross with a tame side footed effort allowing goalkeeper Delpeche to recover and gather just outside the goaline.

Phoenix never gave up creating a few good openings.

Two minutes after replacing Kevin Keith, Makeil Mc Kenzie showed good skill inside the Connection area dribbling past two defenders however he finished with a miserable miss-kick behind in the 81st minute, followed by an 86th minute deflected shot from distance by Mc Kenzie which flew just wide.

And in the 90th minute substitute Le’Jandro Williams was denied by a fine Williams save.

Connection also had its miserable moments with the worst in the 79th minute when substitute Andre Quashie failed to unleash a shot with goalkeeper Delpeche at his mercy after inside the area taking a touch too many on Bartholomew’s pass inside the area.

Teams

W Connection—Jan Michael Williams (capt.), Elijah Joseph, Kemuel Rivers, Rennie Britto, Kern Cupid, Hashim Arcia, Keon Quow (Matthew Bartholomew 46th), Keron Cummings, Kenaz Williams, Jelani Grosvenor, Neil Benjamin (Andre Quashie 69th).

T&TEC survives Stokley scare in Toyota quarterfinals.

Never let your foot off the gas even when you’re in front was probably the lesson learnt by T&TEC FC on Friday night at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in the quarter-final round of the 2011 Toyota Classic against Tobagonian side Stokely Vale despite winning 4-3.

T&TEC at one point were leading 4-1 but a lackluster ending by the “Electric Boys’ and a puzzling change in goal by coach Dexter Cyrus replacing Akini Adams with Perry Martin saw Stokley Vale reduce the deficit 4-3 and struck the crossbar in injury time.

Striker Sylvester Teesdale had T&TEC in front just eight minutes inside when he headed past goalkeeper Ryan Stewart off Javed Mohammed’s right side corner for a 1-0 advantage.

T&TEC then lost its early advantage in the 19th minute when Travis Winchester leveled the scores 1-1 burying a shot into the roof of the net after Adams made a spill on a shot from outside the area.

But ten minutes from the break T&TEC jumped ahead again with a powerfully struck free kick at the edge of the area by Andrei Pacheco leaving the Tobagonians stunned for a 2-1 scoreline.

T&TEC added a third and fourth item when in the 55th minute Kern Peters capitalized on a spill by goalkeeper Stewart from Kelvin Modeste’s freekick banging in a shot from close range and less than a minute after coming on in the 77th minute, Jamal Ayres joined in on the fun with a superb finish for a 4-1 scoreline.

By that stage one would have expected the Tobagonians to surrender but not for Winchester and company.

Travis Winchester completed a double by the 79th minute with a solid finish against substitute goalie Perry Martin making it 4-2 and in the 88th minute substitute Rundel Winchester made it 4-3.

T&TEC was later rescued by the crossbar in injury time when Rundel headed onto the crossbar from inside the area off a freekick.

In the end T&TEC held on to advance into the semi-final round against the quarter-final winner between North East Stars against St. Ann’s Rangers from 6pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Saturday 26 November.

Rangers beat North East in Toyota Classic quarterfinal shootout.
ttproleague.com.

Midfielder Devon Modeste equalized twice for St. Ann’s Rangers before paving the way for a 3-0 penalty win over DIRECTV North East Stars on Saturday night at the Larry Gomes Stadium in the quarter-final round of the 2011 Toyota Classic.

Modeste’s second item forced the match into penalty kicks following a 2-2 draw in the end and led the way, converting his team’s first kick from the penalty spot while North East Stars failed on three consecutive kicks (Akeil Guevara, Seon Power and Anthony Wolfe) sending Rangers into the semi-final round of the competition against T&TEC FC on Friday 02 December at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium from 6pm.

Nine minutes into the second period, following a goalless first half, Anthony Wolfe fired a ten-man Stars ahead 1-0 with a wonderful strike from the right after he was picked out by midfielder Akeil Guevara but Modeste responded in the 68th minute leveling the scores 1-1.

The Rangers midfielder hammered a first time volley past goalkeeper Andrew Durant off Trent Noel’s cross-ball which came off the head of defender Charles Pollard.

Rangers came close to taking the advantage in the 78th minute with McFarlane spilling just wide of the far upright following a sequence of missed attempts inside the area.

And paid for it two minutes later when Stars jumped ahead again with Kevin Jagdeosing headed past goalkeeper Shane Mattis for a 2-1 advantage after Marc Leslie flicked on a right corner by Wolfe.

But Modeste was at it again in the 87th minute forcing a good save out of Durant when he headed at goal off Noel’s corner and a minute later he leveled the scores again—this time from the penalty spot after winning the foul inside the area.

Modeste converted comfortably to the left of the Stars’ goalie putting the scores 2-2.

He was inches wide of his third in the second minute of injury time with a shot from distance before the final whistle was blown sending the match directly into kicks from the penalty spot.

Stars stepped up first and Guevara’s strike was saved by goalkeeper Mattis, followed by Modeste’s converted kick against Durant. Power’s effort then struck the inside of both uprights and out of the goal area and teammate Wolfe struck the upright.

While Rangers’ second and third kickers, Mikhail Awai and Kaashif Thomas both found the back of the net to secure a 3-0 penalty win in the end.

The first half highlighted by the direct red card sending off of wingback Keryn Navarro had its highlights.

Rangers’ Noel executed a couple curling freekicks just wide in the early stages and in the 25th minute, from an open play, he whipped a curling effort wide of the North East goal.

North East Stars also created chances with Guevara firing wide of the far post after meeting a hard worked cross by Kaydion Gabriel who was challenged by a hard Elijah Belgrave tackle.

And in the 30th minute goalkeeper Mattis pulled off a magnificent save, blocking out Charles Pollard’s header on goal off a Kendall Velox left side corner.

Mattis followed up with superb save three minutes later gloving out a well struck Anthony Wolfe free-kick from 25 yards out which was destined for the upper left corner.

And in the 38th minute North East Stars suffered the dent with attacking right-back Navarro picking up a direct red card for what the officials deemed an intentional blow to nippy Shaquille Nesbitte.

Navarro pleaded with referee Michael Ragoonath who was in consultation with assistant Anaaz Mohammed who signaled the foul but that didn’t change the course of decision by the officials which left Coach Emerson Alcantara furious.

Kicks from the penalty spot

North East Stars 0    -    St. Ann’s Rangers 3
Akeil Guevara (saved)    -    Devon Modeste (scored)
Seon Power (missed)    -    Mikhail Awai (scored)
Anthony Wolfe (missed)    -    Kaashif Thomas (scored)

Teams

North East Stars—Andrew Durrant, Charles Pollard (capt.), Seon Power, Anthony Wolfe, Kaydion Gabriel (Stephan Cruickshank 80th), Marc Leslie, Kendall Velox (Yellow Card), Keryn Navarro (Red Card), Keion Goodrich, Akeil Guevara, Kevin Jagdeosingh.

Coach—Emerson Alcantara.

St. Ann’s Rangers—Shane Mattis, Errol McFarlane (capt.), Clevon Mc Fee (Theon James 65th), Trent Noel, Elijah Belgrave, Jaime Ruiz James (Kaashif Thomas 62nd), Devon Modeste, Mikhail Awai, Shaquille Nesbitte, Nicholas Valentine, Akil Clarke (Yellow Card).

Jabloteh into Toyota semis against bitter rivals Connection.

Right-wingback Reshad Wint didn’t execute a perfect defensive role, but made up seven minutes from time to head Adam’s Construction San Juan Jabloteh to a 2-1 comeback victory over crosstown rivals Caledonia AIA in the quarter-final round of the 2011 Toyota Classic on Saturday night at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

Wint made a brave dive into the area in the 83rd minute powerfully heading past Caledonia goalie Zane Coker when he met Elijah Manners’ cross from the left – snatching victory and a place in the semi-final round where Jabloteh meets bitter rivals W Connection from 8pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on Friday 02 December.

Caledonia, coming off previous victories against Jabloteh this season in two meetings, seemed on course for another when in the 50th minute, Guyanese winger Trayon Bobb had the Morvant/Laventille side up 1-0 when he smashed a shot into the roof of the net beating goalkeeper Cleon John who had little chance against the pace from close range.

But in the 80th minute Jabloteh midfielder Marvin Oliver, who was less than himself on Saturday night, leveled the scores 1-1 against his former club.

Twenty one minutes into the match Oliver spilled disappointingly over-bar from the edge of the six yard area after the ball was knocked down into his path from a Jabloteh set piece which should have given his side the early advantage.

And Jabloteh’s number one Cleon John had to follow up with a strong save in the 25th minute denying Akim Armstrong from the anlge.

Caledonia without striker Jamal Gay who scored doubles against Jabloteh in the previous two meetings this season—currently on St. Kitts with the T&T Olympic squad—suffered huge blow in with Armstrong replaced by Shaquille Smith in the 33rd minute after suffering an injured right knee in a clash with Hector Sam two minutes earlier.

In the 35th minute Caledonia’s Bobb was denied by an excellent save from John blocking out a blistering effort by the Guyanese international and on the other end Jabloteh’s English born Luke Gullick had three attempts failing to change the 0-0 scoreline before the break.

Following Bobb’s opening item in the 50th minute, Caledonia wingback Kareem Joseph had to clear a tame effort by Hector Sam off the goal-line in the 51st minute.

Sam was denied again in the 58th minute by the glove of Coker after heading towards goal when he was played by a Kennedy Hinkson cross from the right.

Jabloteh later snatched a 2-1 victory joining W Connection, T&TEC FC and St. Ann’s Rangers in the semi-final round.

Bobb had a last ditch effort for Caledonia in the 87th minute, however he was denied by goalkeeper John.

OK, a little (probably biased additions)

First....Mattix save was really good, from a powerful header.
Second.... Jagdeosingh latched onto a great pass for a one on one chance. After his speed took him past the Rangers defender he was pulled down and ref awarded free kick. Straight red for being last man? Nope.

Navarro made a run past Nesbitte (who is coming along superbly and will be a massive player if he continues to develop) who impeded Navarros' run into the box. Navarro pushed past Nesbitte and, in my opinion - and the spectators around me- Nesbitte took a dive holding his head. Of course, we will only know what actually happened if we can see footage, but it appeared there was definately contact, but not to the face. The referee didn't stop the game, but the assistant referree - who was ref at the previous North East game, I believe (and did not receive a good report) - said enough to the ref to convince him to award a straight red, leaving Stars with 52 minutes to play with 10 men.

Obviously, this changed the balasnce of the game, with Nesbitte (although not utilised enough) being the main worry down the wing.

Although the first Stars goal was deserved, their second was really against the run of play, with North East struggling to hold on.

Then, with only a couple of minutes left on the clock, a clash of heads in the North East box left Pollard on the floor clutching his head. However, the ref didn't stop the game, and the assistant didn't seem to notice the man down. Rangers pushed the ball back into the box and Pollard, dazedly climbing to his feet brought down Modeste for a penalty. Modeste looked sharp all game, and took his penalty well.

Now obviously, the above comments will be viewed as biased, but thats how myself and the independent supporters saw the incidents. If Navarro lashed out as the ref believed, then a red was correct. However, the assistant linesman didn't see fit to punish the initial obstruction that led to the incident. In my opinion, the ref got it wrong by not sending off the Rangers defender, who was the last defender, and could have evened things up by showing Navarro a yellow (after all, the ref didn't see the incident). I think a more experienced ref would have effected the game different. As was mentioned today, there are 150 experienced officials currently not being used, while we have inexperienced officials making bad calls.

That said, whatever happened in the 90 minutes, Rangers deserved the win as they scored 3 out of 3 pens.  North East had their chance and blew it!

T&TEC prepares psychologically ahead of Toyota semi-final round
ttproleague.com

T&TEC FC is taking all precautionary measures on a serious note following last Friday’s close shave 4-3 result against Super League side Stokely Vale in the quarter-final round of the 2011 Toyota Classic.

T&TEC will meet St. Ann’s Rangers from 6pm at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in the semi-final round on Friday 02 December but will not forget their 4-1 advantage slip to a 4-3 result in the end against the Tobagonian side Stokely Vale which was also denied by the crossbar in injury time.

“We started off on the front foot, the way we wanted to play,” said T&TEC captain and central defender Kern Peters. “We got the early goal and then dropped our heads a bit when Stokely Vale leveled the scores. But we dominated for most of the game especially following Pacheco’s goal.

And after going up 4-1 we dropped our game and allowed the scoreline to reach 4-3. This is not the first time it has happened to us, leading 4-1 and then losing that huge advantage.

It happened to us against Jabloteh also (ending 4-4 in the group stage of the 2011 First Citizens Cup). I see it as a concentration problem. The game isn’t done in the 70th minute or so. We have to play out to the 90 plus.”

The 25 year old Peters said that the team management is doing its part by having psychologist Mr. Brian Skinner on board and has worked with the team from time in the past couple months. Peters further added that Skinner has worked with the team this week ahead of Friday’s semi-final clash against Rangers coming off the scare in the last match.

Rangers defeated DIRECTV North East Stars 3-0 on penalties following a hardfought 2-2 draw to reach the semi-final round and Peters who stands out in defence for T&TEC and was one of four goalscorers last Friday said, “Definitely they(Rangers) will be coming in on a high after getting a victory against North East Stars. But it’s the semi-final and we need to earn a win. We are not focusing on Rangers too much. We are simply going to focus on our game of attacking and exciting football and execute in the best way.”

Head coach Dexter Cyrus has a strong roster despite the unavailability of midfielder Romauld Aguillera and goalkeeper Clayton Ince on the injury list, and Kevon Neaves still working his way back to full fitness after a hamstring injury.

Available to Cyrus will be Sylvester Teesdale, Andrei Pacheco, Akeem Adams, goalkeeper Akini Adams, Peters, Corneal Thomas, Javed Mohammed, Kelvin Modeste, Jamal Ayres, Kerlon Furgeson, Bevon Bass, Marcus Joseph and Aubrey David as key ingredients.

If dat is de case, den why did Tobago United always finish last in de Pro League? Why did Tobago United opt to go wit ah bunch of Guyanese and other foreign players?

Now dat Tobago doh have ah Pro League team, dey better players have tuh find ah Trinidad-based club in order to be seen.

Tallman, you know the best players in Tobago never wanted to play for Tobago United, those guys in Tobago fed up with the bullshit that going on with Football in Trinidad, they know they are not even considered so why try, these guys rather remain in Tobago do their days work and play Football in the evening, check the coaching courses being run by the TTFF you ever hear one take place in Tobago, how many of their Coaches taking part in the one in T&T,look at St Clair coaching school the best team in Tobago, they don't even worry to go any where because it's a waste of time,Bertil don't stand a chance in T&T Football any more, you don't even hear about him and he is so cool with that after all he did for Football.
Tobago players have always done well for our country, why they have to come to Trinidad to be seen, this is one country the same way they can come here we can go there,we don't need a visa for that,Signal Hill has been dominating the SSFL for years tell me where all those players today, look at that at that last WC qualifying game we played against Guyana i'm sure if it was played in the Dwight Yorke Stadium we would have gotten a crowd.
I am not from Tobago but if we talking about the best players in the country lets look at Tobago too, lets do some screening over there and we will find some raw talent.

I eh following yuh. Yuh say de best players in Tobago eh want tuh play fuh Tobago United because dey fedup ah de bullshit wit Trinidad football. So den how do you explain de participation of Stokely Vale and Phoenix in de Super League? And dey actually came 2nd and 3rd dis year. As far as I understand de whole Tobago United is nutten more dan ego business and ah power struggle.

I agree dat Tobagonian players shouldn't HAVE tuh go tuh Trinidad tuh be scouted. Our scouting process is not up to standard, and what you say about Tobago could be applied to rural/country areas in Trinidad. But at de same time, you go tell me dat if ah man serious about progressing in football, he eh go find he ass wherever it is dat give him ah better chance of making de grade? Look how Daneil Cyrus and Keon Daniel in de MLS now.

Actually one of de coaching courses was held in Tobago.

Tobago gets ah raw deal in many aspects, not only football, but yuh still have to work within de system as best as you can.
