Jabloteh slay Guaya to meet Army in Toyota Classic.
ttproleague.com.

Forward Tyrone Charles was used off the bench with just fourteen minutes left but grabbed a double against wounded lions when defending Toyota Classic champions San Juan Jabloteh triumphed 5-0 over top Super League side Guaya United last night.

The victory puts the San Juan Kings into the Toyota Classic semi-final round next weekend against Defence Force, who needed the help of ex-Trinidad and Tobago forward Devorn Jorsling to edge Super League side FC Santa Rosa 2-1 in the first match of a quarter-final double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium tonight.

Despite the result, it was an electrifying contest and a well-deserved win for the Keith Jeffrey-coached Jabloteh, who had whipped another Super League side, Marabella Family Crisis Centre, 7-0 in the Round-of-16 two weeks ago.

As expected, Guaya turned up at the Port-of-Spain venue with, seemingly, the entire countryside of Guayaguayare in tow, their talented captain and player/coach Ryan Stewart, and a goalkeeper named Erskine Johnson.

Stewart was up to his usual self, dispatching brilliant passes from midfield but it was the talent of Johnson that kept the defending champions, Jabloteh, without a goal until the 50th minute.

Johnson, who denied Kennedy Hinkson, Jevon Morris and a stoppage-time strike from Fabian Reid, all in the first half, was hung out to dry five minutes into the second period when Jabloteh grabbed a 1-0 lead.

In a play kept alive by a defensive error by wingback Leroy Jones, who missed a simple interception, Jabloteh’s Nathan Lewis was able to continue the play before feeding forward Jamal Gay, who held his composure, to hit past Johnson from inside the area.

The cookie crumbled from there on for Guaya, but it was always in the making, particularly from the performance of Lewis, whose speed and usual popping of a few tricks down the flanks proved too much for the Heart of a Lion Guaya United.

Lewis’ constant busts of speed down the flank also forced a premature substitution from Guaya coach Akeno Morgan, who replaced Kendell Campbell for the legs of Russell Alfred with six minutes left in the first half. Maybe if Morgan had a suitably better replacement for the exhausted legs of Jones, he would have made a similar change in the second period.

Jamaican Fabian Reid, who went inches wide of the target in the 10th minute, gave Jabloteh 2-0 cushion on the 60th minute. Reid's strike from an acute angle on the right, following a neat chest down and pass from Hinkson, surprised Guaya’s “Green Army” supporters when it flew past Johnson at near post.

Johnson, however, wasn’t deflated just yet. The Guaya goalie did well to deny Reid (F) a second in the 68th minute then produced consecutive saves a minute later to blank Reid again and a follow-up attempt from Gay.

But there was little Johnson could do for his side in the 75th minute when Jabloteh improved their lead 3-0. Johnson’s teammates had allowed Morris to power his way all the way from his own half and into the Guaya area before he blasted the ball into the far netting from the right.

It was clearly the end for Guaya, who had two missed headers from forward Carlon Hughes moments earlier.

However, Jabloteh weren’t done yet. The San Juan Kings smelt blood and had an appetite for it in the closing stages.

Substitute Tyrone Charles made it 4-0 in the 79th minute with a simple tap in to complete a neat build involving substitute Kaashif Thomas, Lewis and Gay.

Charles, wasted overbar in the 86th minute with substitute Sean Bonval free on goal, but redeemed himself in the 89th minute to complete the 5-0 Jabloteh win as Guaya and their hundreds of "Green Army” supporters made their quiet exit.

In the earlier contest at the Port-of-Spain venue it wasn’t all gloom and doom for Super League’s FC Santa Rosa, who also had their coach Keith Look Loy and substituted goalscorer Devon King ejected from the technical area by referee Rashby Mc Phie for dissent.

Look Loy had told ttproleague.com earlier this week that he anticipated his team’s most difficult game ever in the history of the club and the focus was simply on representing the club and the Super League well – win, lose or draw.

A 2-1 scoreline, although in favour of Defence Force, presumably sufficed.

Defence Force were ahead 1-0 by the 15th minute. Jelani Felix, shifted into the role of creative midfielder in absence of injured regular playmaker Jerwyn Balthazar, had time, lots of it, and space to deliberate before firing into goalkeeper Kitwana Manning’s bottom corner from distance.

However in the only minute of stoppage-time in the first half, Santa Rosa levelled the scores 1-1 when King converted from the penalty spot.

Defence Force had themselves to blame, not only because goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke had given away a penalty just before the break, but because they were miserable in front of goal.

Earlier this week, Defence Force head coach promised an attacking team and a basket of goals against the Santa Rosa, the side that edged the Defence Force Super League side 1-0 in the Round-of-16. To be exact, Gordon targeted 7 or 8 goals.

But had midfielder Kerry Joseph beaten goalkeeper Manning on two clear-cut chances in the 24th and 29th minutes, and defender Rodell Elcock put a free header on target in the 33rd minute for Defence Force during a lopsided first half, maybe it would have set the tone for that desired basket of goals.

Goalkeeper Clarke had clear coverage of an aerial ball played into his box, but recklessly stretched out his leg, fouling King in the process and forcing referee Mc Phie to point to the spot.

King, whose left sleeve was torn by the studs of Clarke’s boot in the incident, clinically rifled the ball into the top corner from the spot.

However, King failed to continue further than two minutes inside the second period due to a suspected groin injury. But his goal, a half-time team-talk by Look Loy, and the fact that they held Defence Force to a 1-1 draw at the break, may have all contributed to an improvement in belief from Santa Rosa.

As the game progressed, Santa Rosa looked an improved side from the first half while Defence Force were again failing to produce after mounting continuous attacks on their opponents, including Joseph spilling overbar from the edge of the six-yard area in the 58th minute.

Coach Gordon had made a bizarre move on the restart, exhausting his three changes at once by replacing ineffective forwards Richard Roy and Kellon Serrette and goalscorer Felix with forward Devorn Jorsling, defender Marvin Jones and midfielder Sean Narcis, respectively.

It was not until the 78th minute that the former Pro League Player of the Year, Jorsling, produced the winner by slotting the ball past Manning after meeting a long diagonal feed from Ross Russell Jr.

Ross Russell senior, the head coach of Central FC, will lead the Couva Sharks into action against Morvant Caledonia United in the first match of quarter-final Day Two double-header at the Ato Boldon Stadium today (Sunday 22 November) from 4 pm.

Then from 6 pm, North East Stars, 8-0 winners over Siparia Spurs in the Round-of-16, will meet three-time former champions, W Connection.

Central and Connection set up Toyota Clásico after QF wins over Cale’ and N/E Stars.
ttproleague.com.

Couva-rivals Central FC and W Connection will meet in the semi-final round of the Toyota Classic 2015 on November 29 after quarter-final wins over Morvant Caledonia United and 10-man North East Stars, respectively, on Sunday.

It will be the second Couva-Clásico within six days and fourth of the season as Central and Connection are also scheduled to meet on Tuesday from 8 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Round One Match Day Four of the 2015-16 Digicel Pro League.

Last evening Ataulla Guerra scored on either side of the break at the Ato Boldon Stadium to lift Central FC to a 2-1 win over his ex-employers, Morvant Caledonia United, in the first match of the final quarter-final double-header before Connection completed the semi-final matchups with a 3-0 win over North East Stars, who were reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

Central will take on Connection from 6 pm in Semi-Final Two on Sunday 29 November at the Hasely Crawford Stadium following a 4 pm kick-off between Defence Force and defending Toyota Classic champions San Juan Jabloteh in Semi-Final One.

On Saturday, Jabloteh whipped top Super League side Guaya United 5-0 after Defence Force edged another Super League side FC Santa Rosa 2-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium to secure an all-Pro League cast in the semi-finals.

Connection, who, like Central needed penalties to reach the quarter-finals, took a 1-0 lead into the break after Jomal Williams broke the offside trap to collect a Briel Thomas cross and fired into goalkeeper Shane Mattis’ far netting in the 44th minute after an evenly contested first half against North East Stars.

But things took a twist for the worst for North East Stars in the 53rd minute when central defender Glenton Wolfe was ejected following his second yellow card. Referee Rodphin Harris adjudged that Wolfe had struck Quintero in the face in the process of shielding the ball from the Connection forward.

Although down a player, the Roland Clarke-coached North East Stars – 8-0 winners over Super League outfit Siparia Spurs in the Round-of-16 – didn’t roll over. However their defence clearly missed the experience and defensive ability of Wolfe as Connection found the back of the net twice in the second period to complete the rout.

Andre Toussaint made it 2-0 for the three-time Toyota Classic champions, Connection, when he smashed a clever heeled pass from Neil Benjamin Jr. past Mattis.

Then on the 73rd minute Quintero, who was denied superbly by Mattis in the 18th minute, added the Savonetta Boys third with a simple tap in following an attack involving substitute Shahdon Winchester and opening goalscorer Jomal Williams for a 3-0 finish over the 2012 Toyota Classic champions.

Stars, wielding the talent of Trinidad and Tobago international and former Connection player, Keron Cummings, and ex-T&T youth player, Duane Muckette, in midfield, mounted numerous attacks but came closest to an item two minutes inside the second period when T&T international Jesus Perez’s attempt glanced off the base of the upright.

In the earlier contest, another T&T talent, Guerra, who recently returned to action following a lengthy lay-off due to injury, handed Central FC a 1-0 lead over his ex-employers Morvant Caledonia United (MCU) in the 14th minute.

Guerra rounded goalkeeper Marvin Phillip inside the area in a one-on-one situation after a feed from Willis Plaza to score.

Plaza later wasted two close-up chances, and although he did well to create a number of openings, his side lost the advantage just before the half-time whistle.

MCU’s Guyana international, Sheldon Holder, who had an excellent diving headed goal cancelled out for offside, levelled the scores 1-1 in stoppage-time of the first half after he broke the offside trap to control a pass sent into the box and rifled his shot past goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams at the near post.

It was a deserving goal, especially after ‘keeper Phillip had risked it all to preserve his side’s lifeline. Phillip’s face had taken the full impact from a strike by Sean De Silva. Unlucky for the T&T shot-stopper, he needed the assistant of the medical staff again following the resulting corner after colliding with the upright when he pulled off a save to tip behind a Jason Marcano header.

Phillip was brilliant again, denying Plaza and substitute Marcus Joseph in the 62nd and 71st minutes, respectively. But even with his heroics, the MCU players failed to earn the club’s founding member and current technical director, Jamaal Shabazz, a win in celebration of his 52nd birthday.

Guerra completed his double in the 78th minute for a 2-1 Central win when he struck a left-footed strike to beat Phillip following a corner swung in from the right by Marcano.

Substitute Marcus Joseph had a great opportunity to add to Central’s tally in stoppage-time by his attempt crashed off the base of the upright moments after a 30-yard Kareem Joseph free-kick on the other end clipped the top of goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams’ crossbar.

MCU will now shift their focus solely on the Digicel Pro League (DPL) when they host St. Ann’s Rangers from 6 pm on Thursday (Nov. 26) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Round One Match Day Four.

Two hours later (8 pm) at the same venue Police FC will tackle Jabloteh.

The DPL Round One Match Day Four action kicks off on Tuesday (Nov. 24) when Club Sando and Defence Force clash from 6 pm, followed by the W Connection versus Central FC Couva-Clásico.

Also on Tuesday, Point Fortin Civic will host North East Stars from 6 pm at the Mahaica Oval.

W Connection outlast Central on penalties to meet D/Force in Toyota Classic final.
ttproleague.com.

W Connection celebrated wins on an off the field yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium with club president David John-Williams voted in as the new Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president just over two hours before the Savonetta Boys outlasted 10-man Couva-rivals Central FC 6-5 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the semi-final round of the Toyota Classic.

Connection, winners of this season’s First Citizens Cup, advanced to Defence Force in the Toyota Classic 2015 final on Sunday 6 December from 6:30 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

As John-Williams basked in victory after two rounds of voting at the TTFA elections hosted in the VIP lounge of the Port of Spain venue earlier in the day, Defence Force were leading defending Toyota Classic champions San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 in semi-final one of the Toyota Classic.

Devorn Jorsling had scored in the 41st minute, right-footing a Curtis Gonzales cross past Jabloteh goalkeeper Shemel Louison in a play which began from a quickly taken Jelani Felix free-kick.

Felix later struck the crossbar and Jabloteh looked dangerous on a few occasions, but it was Jorsling’s first-half strike that separated both sides in the end after a dismal contest.

In the second semi-final, but first match witnessed by John-Williams in his new position as TTFA president, W Connection and Central battled through 90 minutes of play, inclusive of 4 goals and a red card, then sixteen penalty kicks before winners were finally produced.

Connection goalkeeper Julani Archibald produced the winning save on penalties in the second kick of sudden death to deny a poorly taken strike by Central defender Jamal Jack after both sides were neck and neck throughout.

Archibald had redeemed himself. It was his errant pass in the 47th minute of play allowed Willis Plaza to score into an open net for a 2-1 Couva Sharkslead.

Connection, the most successful club in the Toyota Classic with 3 titles, had taken a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Neil Benjamin Jr. chipped an advancing goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams from just inside the area for a 1-0 score after racing onto an Andre Toussaint feed from midfield.

However Central midfielder Ataulla Guerra equalised for a 1-1 score two minutes later when he smashed a low drive past Archibald after combining with Plaza in a right side move initiated by Nathaniel Garcia.

With 13 minutes left in regulation time and a goal down, Connection head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier summoned the services of former Central forward Dwight Quintero at the expense of defensive midfielder Briel Thomas and the 21-year-old delivered.

Quintero executed a glancing header off an Alvin Jones’ free-kick to send the ball into the bottom corner of the Central net, levelling the scores 2-2 in the 81st minute.

Goalkeeper Williams, who produced a brilliant save in the 65th minute to keep out a Jomal Williams’ free-kick at the bottom corner, had little chance on Quintero’s header.

Central were reduced to 10-men when referee Keon Yorke issued Nathaniel Garcia an automatic red card with three minutes left after flashing the midfielder’s second yellow card of the match for a foul on Jomal Williams.

Central were inches shy of grabbing a late winner after a Guerra strike from distance in the 89th minute skidded off the outside of the base of goalkeeper Archibald’s upright to the relief of Connection, who went on to win a nerve-wrecking penalty shootout 6-5.

Both sides had met last Tuesday in the Digicel Pro League and played to a 1-1 draw at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

W Connection president David John-Williams, however, had a somewhat easier journey to victory as elected TTFA president. He received 25 votes from the 45 delegates present in the second ballot of the TTFA elections while Raymond Tim Kee, who was seeking a second term, received 19 votes.

In round one John-Williams received 18 votes, ahead of Tim Kee (13), Clynt Taylor (8.), Selby Browne (3) and Ramesh Ramdhan (3).

While John-Williams get set for his challenge as new TTFA president, W Connection will prepare over the next week for Sunday’s (December 6) final against Defence Force at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. The champions will receive $70,000 while the runners-up will take away $20,000.

The action kicks off from 4:30 pm between St. Mary’s College (CIC) against Fatima College in contest for the Toyota Classic Challenge Trophy and $10,000.

W Connection spank D/Force to claim fourth Toyota Classic crown.
ttproleague.com.

W Connection lifted their fourth Toyota Classic title on Sunday night in style, with a 4-0 triumph over 10-man Defence Force at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Jomal Williams, the eventual Toyota Classic 2015 final MVP, led with a goal and assist, while Shahdon Winchester, Neil Benjamin and substitute Aikim Andrews also scored a goal each as the Savonetta Boys secured their second major trophy of the 2015-16 season after the First Citizens Cup in October.

“This season is already much better than last season when we only won the (Digicel) Charity Shield,” said W Connection technical director/head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier after Sunday’s victory.

Charles-Fevrier, the Toyota Classic 2015 Coach of the Tournament, added, “We set out our objectives to win more silverware this season and it’s good that we have been able to win the first two trophies. We are quite pleased with that.

“I thought we deserved to win. We definitely showed that we were the better team on the night. Defence Force dug deep but tonight they were definitely outclassed by us.

“They (Defence Force) are one of the quality teams in the league and can always bounce back, but tonight was definitely our night.”

Sunday’s Toyota Classic crowning comes one week after W Connection boss, David John-Williams, was elected as president of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) and subsequently handed over his duties as president and chief executive officer of the Couva-based club to his daughter Renee John-Williams.

Charles-Fevrier said he communicated to his players that with David John-Williams now assuming his responsibility as TTFA president, it meant every player and staff member now have a greater commitment to W Connection.

“I guess tonight we demonstrated that,” Charles-Fevrier said. “I want everyone at W Connection to understand it’s not only for today, but for the rest of the season and beyond because it’s a four-year term (David John-Williams will be serving as TTFA president). Also we really wanted to win this (Toyota Classic) trophy because it’s our first time playing with him as president (of the TTFA). That was an added incentive.”

Charles-Fevrier’s side grabbed the lead on the 21st minute through attacker Jomal Williams against Defence Force.

Williams, unmarked inside the left of the box, controlled a diagonal cross from Alvin Jones, which skipped past the intended target of midfielder Andre Toussaint, and curled his strike beyond goalkeeper Sheldon Clarke, who had made a brilliant one-handed save ten minutes earlier to keep out a Jones’ free-kick blast.

Conversely, Connection were lucky not to concede a minute before opening the scoring.

Devorn Jorsling, one of three Defence Force attackers unmarked in the Connection area following an enterprising play, failed to direct his right-footed volley on target off a right side cross from Curtis Gonzales.

Jorsling would later add to his side’s demise when he forced the hand of referee Crystal Sobers into issuing him a red card—reducing Defence Force to 10 men with just a minute left in the first period.

Sobers had issued Jorsling a yellow card, ruling a foul against Defence Force after halting an attacking move. A furious Jorsling, unable to restrain his feelings, then saw red for dissent, by which time Connection were already leading 2-0.

“The sending off was a soft sending off but, all in all, I thought the better team on the night won the game,” conceded Defence Force head coach Marvin Gordon.

Gordon said his players’ attitude in the lead up to Sunday’s final was brilliant and from all indications he felt his team was prepared to win the final.

“But today (Sunday) I thought defensively we were really poor,” admitted Gordon. “We weren’t marking and tracking enough. Credit to W Connection, they play one way, which is play the ball and move… a lot of give and go, and we didn’t defend properly.”

Forward Shahdon Winchester had scored Connection’s second item on the night in the 39th minute with a simple tap-in past a hapless Clarke, whose defence was left beaten by a move involving Andre Toussaint and eventual goal-assist, Briel Thomas.

Goalkeeper Julani Archibald was also brilliant for Connection in keeping a clean sheet. The St. Kitts/Nevis international pushed wide a Jelani Felix attempt in the 32nd minute before the resulting corner was headed just over by Defence Force defender Rodell Elcock.

Archibald made another save in the 41st minute to deny Defence Force when he pushed overbar a header by Jerwyn Balthazar.

With two-goal deficit and down to 10 men, Defence Force coach Marvin Gordon called on the services of former Connection midfielder Hashim Arcia and forward Richard Roy, replacing fullback Aklie Edwards and winger Kerry Joseph, respectively, on the 51st minute.

Arcia, making his debut for Defence Force, last played competitively nearly seven months ago while representing Connection. The talented midfielder shook off some rust but even with his quality in the attacking third, Defence Force failed to rebound.

Connection, however, didn’t stop scoring and had the Defence Force backline to thank for hanging out Clarke to dry on a number of occasions.

Neil Benjamin made it 3-0 in the 66th minute with an easy finish after a defensive blunder by Curtis Gonzales allowed Connection substitute Dwight Quintero to attack the box before slipping a feed to Benjamin on the right.

Moments earlier Quintero and Jomal Williams had attempts just wide of the target in the 61st and 63rd minutes respectively.

Clarke’s goal was rocked in the 73rd minute when a right-footed attempt by Aikim Andrews cannoned off the upright and Benjamin troubled the side netting four minutes later.

The Defence Force goalie made saves in the 80th minute and third and final minute of stoppage-time to deny Jomal Williams and Quintero, but his efforts were separated by Connection’s fourth goal.

Connection’s teenaged winger Aikim Andrews made it 4-0 in the 88th minute with a cool finish off a squared Jomal Williams feed to equal the Toyota Classic’s highest scoring final wins of now defunct clubs United Petrotrin (2006 final versus St. Ann's Rangers) and Joe Public (2009 final versus San Juan Jabloteh).

However Connection, now champions of 2005, 2011, 2013 and 2015, improved their position with the most Toyota Classic titles (4), ahead of Jabloteh (2) and defunct Joe Public (2).

Earlier on Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, St. Mary’s College (CIC) were hailed as the Toyota Classic Challenge Trophy 2015 champions after defeating Fatima College 4-0.

Daniel Conocchiari opened the scoring in the 7th minute for St. Mary’s before goals by teammates Chinua Bernard (19th minute), Tyrese Spicer (42nd minute) and Ethan Shim (44th minute) completed the scoring before the break.

Think he is retired. Hasn't played this season or the 2014/15 season.

Sponsors one off game. Not sure if the sponsors just chose the teams.
