U-20 Soca Warriors in Group D of 2024 Concacaf qualifiers
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday)

TRINIDAD and Tobago's men's under-20 football team have been drawn alongside Canada and fellow Caribbean nations Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in group D for the 2024 Concacaf under-20 qualifiers which take place between February and March 2024.

In total, 27 Concacaf member nations will contest the qualifying tournament, with the six group winners advancing to the 12-team Concacaf under-20 championship to be played in the summer of 2024. Those six group winners will join Concacaf's highest-ranked men's under-20 teams: US, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

As of June 2023, T&T's under-20 team were ranked 13th among Concacaf teams – placing them in pot two ahead of Wednesday's draw at the Concacaf headquarters in Miami, Florida. Canada, ranked 12th best in Concacaf, were placed in pot one before the draw. The 25th-ranked SVG and the 29th-ranked Dominica were placed in pots two and three respectively.

T&T will be one of the countries to host matches during next year's qualifiers. The other Concacaf nations to serve as hosts during the qualifiers are Antigua and Barbuda, Guatemala, Nicaragua and St Kitts and Nevis.

In a brief chat with Newsday, T&T Football Association (TTFA) technical director Anton Corneal said he hopes T&T will be able to make home advantage count in the qualifiers.

"Canada will probably be the seeded team (in the group), " Corneal said. "We have had mixed results in the past with Canada in youth football. Being at home, hopefully, it's a group that we can possibly win. I'm not counting out Dominica or St Vincent because all of those programmes are growing."

At the last edition of the Concacaf under-20 showpiece event in 2022, T&T finished third in their group behind Mexico and Haiti. They then fell to a 4-1 loss to Costa Rica at the round of 16 stage.

Then coached by T&T men's team coach Angus Eve, the young Soca Warriors did have bright individual performances. Nathaniel James scored four goals in the tournament and netted a pair of goals versus Haiti and Suriname in group play. Team captain Molik Jesse Khan scored two goals in the tournament. There were also exciting displays from the midfield pair of Real Gill and Kaihim Thomas.

Three of the aforementioned players have since represented T&T at senior level. Both Gill and James are currently in Eve's T&T squad for their upcoming Concacaf Nations League A games against Guatemala (October 13) and Curacao (October 17). James, 19, scored his first senior international goal last month as he came off the bench to grant T&T a 1-0 win over Curacao in their opening match of the ongoing Nations League campaign.

The four semi-finalists at the 2024 Concacaf under-20 championship will qualify for the 2025 Fifa men's under-20 World Cup. The US are the defending Concacaf under-20 champions.

Corneal said an official announcement on the under-20 men's team technical staff will be made next week.

They're into the fourth week of training and Head Coach Anthony Modeste believes is confident that when the final team is selected, they will be ready to face the challenge ahead.

Grenada has been drawn in Group F alongside Jamaica, Bermuda and Martinique with games scheduled to be played at the SKNFA Technical Center in St. Kitts.

Brian Haynes appointed Men’s U-20 Head Coach
TTFA Media

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association is pleased to welcome Mr Brian Haynes as the newly appointed Head Coach of our Men’s Under 20 Team.

The appointment of Haynes comes following a review of various applications that were received and reviewed by the TTFA, via a process led by Technical Director Anton Corneal, over the past few weeks.

Haynes will serve initially on a six-month appointment starting November 1st and he will also be at the helm of a Men’s Under 23 Team which will be used a Feeder Team for the Senior Men’s National Team. He will also assist the TTFA with developing the Talent Identification and Scouting Systems across the various age groups.

As a player, Haynes represented  Trinidad and Tobago at senior level between 1987-1997 and the Under 20 Team between 1980-1982. He played for Dallas Burn in Major League Soccer from 1996-2000 along with a host of other clubs in the US.

On the coaching side, Haynes was most recently attached to Colorado Rapids II in MLS NextPro. He also served at Charlotte Independence in the USL Championship and InterMiami Developmental Academy.

He began his professional coaching career as an Assistant Coach with Dallas Burn in the MLS in 2001-2006.

In an initial reaction to his appointment, Haynes told TTFA Media, “It’s an understatement to say I’m delighted with the appointment. What I’m looking for is the next Trinibagonian who wants to make an impact not just in his local community but for the country itself.

“It’s always been my passion to work with players between the ages of 18  and 24. It’s where I feel comfortable and when the opportunity came it didn’t matter when it was going to be. Once it was offered to me the answer was yes. I’m thankful for the opportunity and I can’t wait to come home to get to work with these players,” he continued.

“First and foremost I will get familiar with the players, get to know them and get all the information on these players. I will be looking at all the videos. I am a possession oriented type of coach. I am also the kind of coach that likes to press and I am also the kind of coach that wants to make sure that we entertain first.

“Yes, we want to win but we want the Trinbagonian people to come support us because we play a brand of football that is something they want to see. We are going to work harder than any other team.

“We are going to do our best to qualify and take this team as far as we can take it. I want to make sure we can put our name back on the map in Concacaf. Mediocrity is not something I am willing to stand for.

Same old nonsense. Same results. If it’s any consolation, Canada and many other teams have not announced squads as yet.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter if we have a team together for six months. If they still playing in the amateur schoolboy leagues, they will be outgunned by any country with an U-20 team built around professional players.

Coach Brian Haynes – The door is open to new U20 Soca Warriors.
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday).

Roughly two months away from Trinidad and Tobago's first match in the 2024 Concacaf men's under-20 qualifiers, T&T's men's under-20 coach Brian Haynes says the door is still open for players to make their way into the training squad ahead of the team's first qualifying match on February 23.

T&T have been drawn in group D of the qualifiers alongside Canada, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). T&T's group matches will be played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, with the hosts opening their campaign against SVG.

In total, 27 Concacaf member nations will contest the qualifying tournament, with the six group winners advancing to the 12-team Concacaf under-20 championship to be played in the summer of 2024. The six group winners will join Concacaf's highest-ranked men's under-20 teams: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and the US.

Haynes currently has roughly 50 players engaged in daily screening sessions at the Ato Boldon Stadium training field in Balmain, Couva. He hopes to trim the squad down to 30-35 players within the coming weeks.

"The door is always going to be open (for players to get into the squad)," Haynes told TT Football Association (TTFA) media this week.

"Guys can be playing at a high level and once they are interested in being here we will see how we can get them in."

Haynes also expressed a desire to undertake a scouting exercise in Tobago. He pointed to positives such as work ethic, competitiveness and intensity in the sessions. Haynes urged the players to continue fighting for their spots and remain on top of their game during the festive seasons, with Christmas less than a week away and Carnival 2024 scheduled for February 12 and 13.

"I know T&T has something called Carnival but we cannot have that get in the way of what we are doing. We have to make sure we plan around it so we can be consistent going into the tournament.

"I made sure and took the time out to tell them nobody has made the team yet. From the time you lack effort and your intensity, now I am thinking you think you have made it. It is good to see guys are coming into themselves right now and realise what they have to do to be on this team."

Haynes' team is expected to include a number of players who featured for T&T at the 2023 Concacaf under-17 men's championship back in February. To help with a smooth transition from the under-17 to the under-20 age group, Haynes has been joined by men's under-17 coach Shawn Cooper for his screening sessions. Cooper is also the coach of the Presentation College (San Fernando) team which won the boys' national intercol title on December 7.

"Even though these guys are coming off their (SSFL) seasons, they need to be as fit as they can be. I do not care who we are coming up against, we have to be working harder than any team," Haynes said.

"We need to (improve) on our fitness because some of these guys are coming to the end of their seasons and some guys are just coming from the US and different places so their fitness levels are different. We have to make sure they are at the same place and try to win some games."

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Colorado Rapids Academy player Jaden Chan Tack called up to U-20 Trinidad and Tobago National Team training camp
Colorado Rapids Media

Colorado Rapids Academy player Jaden Chan Tack was called up to the U-20 Trinidad and Tobago National Team training camp in preparation for the upcoming Concacaf U20 Championship to be held in Trinidad and Tobago from February 23 to March 2, the club announced today. Chan Tack, U-17 defender, participated in the team camp from December 12, 2023, through January 1, 2024, in Trinidad and Tobago.

“It is great to see Jaden getting invited into the Trinidad and Tobago U-20 training camp,” said Chris Cartlidge, Rapids Academy Technical Director. “He is an individual who works diligently day in and day out and he is fully deserving of this opportunity. Jaden has had a tremendous impact on the U-17 group since joining the academy in the summer of 2023. His professionalism and consistency have made him a leader within the Academy program.”

Chan Tack joined the Colorado Rapids Academy in the summer of 2023 as a U-17 player from former club South Florida SA. During the current MLS NEXT season, Chan Tack has scored one goal and added one assist in 11 appearances for the Rapids U-17 Academy team. His versatility on the pitch as both a left back and a center back has helped the team find success during the first half of the 2023-24 MLS NEXT season.

The Florida native has previously spent time with the U-16 Trinidad and Tobago National Team at training camps. His call up to the U-20s served as his first opportunity to train with the team as they continued preparation for the Concacaf U20 Championship.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
