15% Hiike Super: $3.48 Diesel: $2 per Litre.
By Ria Taitt (Express).

GAS GOES UP

It was gas again as Finance Minister Colm Imbert presented his mid-term budget in the House of Representatives yesterday.

Embracing the late Tunapuna businessman Max Senhouse’s “we need the money” mantra, the minister announced a series of revenue-raising measures, including a completely new tax—a seven per cent levy on all online shopping.

But it was déjà vu with gas. Six months after he imposed a 15 per cent increase in his October 2015 Budget, the Minister of Finance hit the motoring public again, announcing another 15 per cent increase in super gasoline (to $3.58 per litre) and diesel (to $2 per litre) with immediate effect.

Jamaican gas prices now lower than Trinidad’s
BY RICHARD BROWNE (Observer)

The price for a litre of gas in Jamaica is now less than the world average, according to the latest figures from GlobalPetrolPrices.com.

The average price for a litre of gas in Jamaica is now US$0.88 or J$106.04. That compares to the world average price of US$0.97 (J$116.88).

But while Jamaican motorists are benefiting from prices that are just below the world average, Trinidadian consumers have much better prices. Since October 2015, Trinidadian prices for gas have been TT$3.11 per litre (US$0.48) and TT$1.72 (US$0.27) per litre for diesel.

The average price of diesel across the world yesterday was around US$0.83 per litre, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com. Jamaica falls just below that rate with a price of US$0.78 or J$93.99 - placing it between Paraguay in Latin America and the mountain kingdom of Bhutan in Asia.

Flex the article you posted there is misleading

Here is the response to it below

On Wednesday which stated that a litre of Jamaican gas was one US cent cheaper than in Trinidad and Tobago, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com. This is indeed the case, at least when the average price of Jamaican gas is compared to Trinidadian premium gas – but it’s a different picture when compared to Trinidadian regular gas.

Jamaican consumers are currently benefiting from a free market system where gas prices are declining at the pumps, thanks to falling oil prices on the world market.

But in Trinidad and Tobago, consumers benefit from steady low prices, as the Government subsidises and fixes the price of fuel. And unlike Jamaica, there is no competition between gas stations, because prices are set by the Government and no gas station adds any mark-up at all.

It was reported on Wednesday in the Business Observer that Jamaican consumers are now paying one US cent less for a litre of gas than Trinidadian consumers. The report stated that the average price of gas in Jamaica is US$0.88 or J$106.04 for a litre, as compared to US$0.89 in Trinidad, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com.

But there is more to the story as the Trinidadian figure really referred only to premium gas and not regular gas.

Further investigation by the Jamaica Observer shows that premium gas costs TT$5.75 per litre (US$0.89) or one US cent more than Jamaica’s average price of US$0.88 quoted by GlobalPetrolPrices.com. That represents a sharp increase from its price of TT$4.00 per litre in 2012, according to our source.

Regular gas in Trinidad, however, costs far less at TT$3.11 (US$0.48), compared to Jamaica’s average price of US$0.88.

The TT$3.11 figure actually represents a recent increase of 15 per cent, up from TT$2.70 per litre — which was imposed in the October 2015 budget by the newly elected Government.

Overall, it means that while the average price for gas in Jamaica is indeed a fraction lower than the price of premium gas in Trinidad, consumers in the twin-island republic get a far better deal for regular gas than Jamaicans.

Trinidadian consumers benefit even more on the price of diesel. Whereas diesel can now be bought for an average price of US$0.78 per litre in Jamaica, in Trinidad consumers and businesses benefit from a cost of only US$0.23 (TT$1.72) per litre.

In fact, Trinidadian diesel is one of the cheapest in the world, but like regular gas that price, too, represents an increase of 15 per cent from TT$1.50 in the last government’s budget in October 2015.

Thanx for the clarification guys. It is tough for TT to feels the pains cause by low oil prices. But everything is cyclical. When the price of oil is high, non-producing oil countries will benefit. But when oil prices go back up is the other way around.
