T&T team aim to keep bond that took them through cup campaign.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago captain Jan Michael Williams asked his teammates to maintain the bond following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Cuba which he said was a major factor behind the team’s admirable run that took them to runners up place in the 2012 Caribbean Cup Finals.

Williams was one of the heroes of T&T’s 5-4 win over Martinique on penalty kicks in Friday’s semi-final but a rare error in Sunday’s final when he misjudged Marcel Hernandez’s 40-yard shot gave the Cubans their first regional title.

The W Connection man was disappointed but encouraged by the team’s positive showing in the tournament which saw them qualify for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, reaching the tournament for the first time since 2007.

“Let’s keep this bond that we started at the beginning of the tournament. Let’s keep our heads high and be proud of what we accomplished here. A lot of people will still say it wasn’t enough but we know to ourselves what we had to go through and the long way we’ve come when nobody cared about the team and just about everyone wrote us off,”Williams told TTFF Media.

“This can only auger well for the future of the national team and football on a whole in Trinidad and Tobago. Everybody loves winners and maybe we haven’t achieved the status of champions but this should be an example to us as to what we can achieve if we try to go the extra mile and who knows where we can end up if we get the right support.”

Speaking to his teammates in a huddle centerfield after the match, Williams said: “We are worthy of being champions because we got this far and we demonstrated the quality of Warriors and champions which is to fight and pick ourselves up when we were down and out.”

“Now we’ll like to get home and enjoy what’s left of this year and spend some quality time with our family and friends because we’ve been out for some time. I think we can recharge our batteries over the Christmas vacation and come out stronger and ready to go in 2013 as we look ahead to the Gold Cup.”

Vice captain Densill Theobald, with smile on his face, produced some of his best performances for a national team during the tournament exhibiting discipline and maturity throughout. But he too couldn’t hold back the disappointment, having captained the team in the 2007 Final which T&T lost to Haiti in Port of Spain.

“Of course I’m disappointed but I think once we get over this we can look back and feel proud of what we were able to achieve here in Antigua. This team can grow from strength if each of us can continue to believe and go forward through belief in God Almighty. He brought us to this stage and maybe it wasn’t our time to take the Cup. Cuba took it this time but we can celebrate still because the Almighty gave us something when a lot of people didn’t think we could achieve it,” Theobald said.

T&T defender Seon Power was unofficially named as one of the tournament’s “Most Valuable Players” even though there was no prize hand out at the closing ceremony and became a favourite with the local fans for his strong showing in the T&T defence.

“I can’t celebrate because this is my second loss in a Final but I feel good for the team and where we’ve reached. This is step in the right direction for us. The hunger is back and hopefully we can be the right example for everyone else who wears the national shirt and those who want to take our football back up the rankings,” Power said.

The T&T team will arrive home at 11:50 am on Monday in Liat Airline.

If it is not mistakes with the score is all kinda bad grammar? We need to lift the standards of the communications department along with other areas of football administration. Come on mr Tim Kee you have a lot of changes to make!

CFU rules state

Goal Scoring
Section 5.  If any team reaches extra time and is scored on by a bullet it counts as a traditional goal.  If said shot is more than 30 yards, hits post and goes in, keeper and goes in, player and goes in, ref and goes in...it then counts as 2 goals.
In Everything give thanks for this is the will of God concerning you.
