Caledonia feasts on Sharks
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868.com)

If the world does not end tonight, Central FC’s players are going to feel pretty silly when they wake up tomorrow and realise they have to live with the memory of this evening’s 5-2 Digicel Pro League mauling, which was inflicted by the in-form Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA.

Caledonia sauntered through the fixture as though it was a casual stroll along the beach. And boy did they make a snack of the “Sharks.”

Central’s England-born coach, Graham Rix, is away on holidays with his family and managing director Brent Sancho ran the team’s bench in his place.

Clearly, the Couva-based Sharks need more than a makeshift technical leader at the moment and, if Rix is not on the next flight back to Piarco, there is reason to doubt that he will ever be recalled.

Caledonia was very good today. But to sit back and hope to regain possession from a careless pass, against a team with three playmakers like Densill Theobald, Ataullah Guerra and Keyon Edwards, seems to be a plot that belongs in “Fifty Shades of Grey” not a football manual.

Conversely, Caledonia might have thought Christmas had come early. Within the opening six minutes, Central had already given the ball away twice in dangerous positions and was made to pay on the second occasion.

Central defender Osei Telesford joined Central on loan from United States A’ League team, Puerto Rico Islanders, on Monday and his first meaningful act was to apologise profusely to his teammates after gifting Caledonia its opener with a slip on top his own back.

Kareem “Tiny” Joseph made the most of it with a smart left foot drive that went in off Central custodian Marvin Phillip’s left upright. Joseph then had the benefit of a shoeshine celebration from teammate and Guyana international Walter Moore.

Not that Joseph’s boots could have possibly been dirty yet.

Caledonia scored two more within the first half hour as central defender Radanfah Abu Bakr, who also rejoined the squad on Monday, prodded home on the second attempt in the 12th minute while St Vincent and the Grenadines international Cornelius Stewart notched another item in the 26th minute after a sweeping build-up involving Guerra and Moore.

Just 29 minutes into the first half, Sancho turned to substitute and 19-year-old recruit Rundell Winchester, who only joined the Sharks yesterday from Super League team, Stokely Vale.

Winchester would be forgiven for wondering if his departure from the Tobago club really was a promotion. After all, Stokely Vale beat Caledonia on penalties in the Toyota Classic Cup last month.

It got worse before it got better for Central. Guerra embarrassed Phillip with a dipping finish from 20 yards in the 37th minute to put the “Eastern Stallions” four goals clear at the interval.

Caledonia completed a five-star performance with a late headed goal from defender Nuru Muhammad off a Guerra corner kick.

But not before Winchester continued his rich form with his sixth goal from as many outings against Pro League opposition this season.

The nippy and enthusiastic Winchester is not yet the finished article but he can certainly claim to be the finishing article. His debut goal for Central was not a collector’s item but it would be treasured regardless by club and player as he got his body in the way to deflect a Hayden Tinto cross past Caledonia goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel.

Another substitute, Tyrone Charles, got a second for Central too with a brilliant curling free kick near the end of regulation time.

But it did not camouflage a spanking from the defending Caribbean champions.

If you are reading this after 21 December 2012, you are probably chuckling at surviving another doomsday prediction. Central FC would not be laughing along with you.

Interesting to know exactly which part of Rix performance that you have witnessed is concerning you. When you attend the training sessions, is it the composition, his communication with the players or the coaching philosophy itself? The reason I ask is that your statement that Sancho is being suckered by Rix seems to indicate knowledge of something that people are not aware of, so it would be nice to know more.

Assistant coach, Kevin Jeffrey selected the teams in consultation with Graham Rix who is in England until 3rd January, as per his contract. Sancho was on hand to assist where required.
The match report did not mention the two Central F.C. shots that hit the woodwork in the second half.
There were spells in the first half where Cali looked like they were on a training field against a minor league team, but in the second half, Sharks made a game of it.
However, the scoreline was indeed shocking, but not as shocking as Defence Force vs W.Connection.

Connection were leading 1-0 early in the second half. I do not know the cause of the capitulation, but I can't remember the last time I heard a team take the lead and then ship 5 goals in 40 minutes.

But for the neutral, 13 goals in two games is entertainment indeed!!

Caledonia spank Central 5-2.
ttproleague.com.

Four first half goals and one in the second, Caledonia AIA headed into the Christmas break in good scoring form with a 5-2 Digicel Pro League win over Central FC.

The win temporarily had the Jerry Moe coached-Caledonia back at the top of the standings with 13 points, before slipping back into second when Defence Force (16 points) also hammered a contrasting 5-1 win over DIRECTV W Connection in the second Round One Match Day Seven fixture on Friday night.

Caledonia wasted no time in hosting Central at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Five minutes into the match, Central goalie Marvin Phillip was called upon to make a solid block-out denying Caledonia's Guyanese winger Walter Moore from close up.

But a minute later Phillip couldn't help his side when right fullback Kareem Joseph blasted in Caledonia's opening item for a 1-0 advantage.

Joseph then assisted in Caledonia's second item by the 12th minute for a 2-0 cushion.

Joseph's corner from the left was bundled by Radanfah Abu Bakr who contested Phillip to the ball, before potting in goal from close up.

Caledonia later made it 3-0 by the 26th minute when Cornelius Stewart sent a low drive past Phillip off a low cross by Moore after Guerra penetrated the midfield and defense before slipping a pass to the left.

The Morvant-Laventille club added a fourth in the 37th minute for a healthy 4-0 advantage before the break.

Terrible keeper, but boss goal. This youth Guerra should try to play outside. He has the physique, but needs to refine his ball skills. Could be a good holding mid-fielder. He tall and have some speed.

I agree about Guerra, but that's your National No2 keeper!! To be fair, 95 times out of 100, his positioning would have been ok. Memories of David Seaman!!

I meant to say terrible keeping on that particular shot.  I know he is a decent keeper. But that night just was not Sharks night. They score an own goal and should have score about 2. But that the way football is sometimes. I like allyuh jersey. Can't wait to see the stripe socks.
