I wonder how Jack Horner's feeling about Joe Public's misfortunes this season. Is it Brent Sancho's fault :p

Imagine if they were in contention.

I hope I live to see the day Joe Public is toiling in the EFA, just to add insult to Jack Warner's injury.

The irony is, a couple years ago, that team had one of the better runs of any TT teams(bar Defence Force) in the CCL.

Debutants Guaya United capture Super League title.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Guaya United created history on Sunday after becoming the first team to capture the blink/bmobile National Super League title in its debut season, after the newly established Eastern Counties Football Union giant defeated Siparia Spurs 2-1 in the final match of the season.

Playing away at the Palo Seco Velodrome, Guaya opened the scoring in the 43rd through a Kendes Garcia strike, before Earlon Thomas bagged his second goal against Siparia Spurs this season, and the match winner in the 71st minute. Former Secondary Schools’ top scorer and MVP Shackiel Henry attempted to halt Guaya’s celebrations with a late goal.

In the end, Guaya, which shared the lead with Club Sando for the better part of the season emerged champion by a solitary point.

The curtains closed on the competition on Sunday despite a number matches remaining unplayed. An announcement was made, however, that the matches will not be played, thus leaving the third relegated team undetermined.

Both FC Santa Rosa, which made its debut in the second tier competition last year, and Joe Public, which won the NSL treble in 2011, were relegated. Beneath both relegated teams lie Defence Force in dead last having played only 16 matches, before being forced to withdraw from the competition. A verdict is expected to be laid within this week on the team’s fate in next year’s competition.

WASA FC, which played to a goalless draw against Stokely Vale in Plymouth, Tobago, may also create history as the first team to capture the title and suffer relegation the following season if Defence Force remains in the league.

Record-holding former T&T international striker may have played his final competitive fixture in an attempt to save WASA from the drop. He played in his fourth match for WASA, after being approached to help save the club, but could not add to his two-goal tally on Sunday.

John rocked the crossbar from close range early into the fixture, but could not make a further impact in the match particularly due to poor service by the club’s wingers. A point from the match may not be enough to see the team survive in the competition next year.

Meanwhile, Club Sando, which also claimed NSL silverware for the first time this season recorded a 3-1 win over FC Santa Rosa, but could not find a return to the top, a place it held for longer spells than Guaya.

Club Sando won the knockout title, its highest achievement in its history, last October following a 4-3 victory over Guaya.

Tobago’s three representatives 1976 FC Phoenix, Stokely Vale and Bethel United all maintained their status in the competition.

Phoenix finished in fifth, while Stokely Vale ended in sixth. Bethel United, which has a chance at facing the drop saved a solid performance for last, beating Real Maracas 2-0. Joe Public, a club which dropped out of the TT Pro League after winning the title on three occasions (1998, 2006 and 2009), suffered its most miserable season to date.

The club has a shaky start to the season and an even more unconvincing end, making a late move into the relegation zone, where it remained on the final day of the season.

While three teams will face the drop, two teams will be promoted from the Champions of Champions National Super League qualifiers, which are set to begin on March 9.

La Forest: Guaya sets pace for growth of community football.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Guaya United’s head coach Ron LaForest deemed his team’s title win in its inaugural blink/bmobile National Super League season, a massive stepping stone for the prospect of wide scale community-based semi-pro and professional football.

Only one season after claiming the Eastern Counties Football Union’s league title for the first time, Guaya, dubbed the Green Army, created history as the first team to capture the second-tier title in its first attempt. Guaya captured the title after defeating Siparia Spurs 2-1 at the Palo Seco Velodrome, on Sunday.

The fans, most of whom reside in the communities of Guayaguayare and Mayaro have been the backbone of the team even before its triumphs at the zonal level. “Guaya has the most supporters in T&T football right now,” claimed La Forest, who said they consistently made the trip to all corners of the country during all competitions.

The public already has support for the idea of community based teams, according to LaForest. “I must say we appreciate the public and their support for community football. It (community teams) have been missing from top leagues,” he added.

“It (Guaya’s win) speaks volumes. It’s something that has been missing in the region. In days gone by, there were massive players who passed through. Guaya had something really good. But something was missing. Guaya was lacking an opening. This is the perfect opening.” He credited both Malabar FC and Club Sando, which challenged Guaya throughout the campaign as smaller clubs moving in the right direction.

Guaya’s win graced the community, which responded with motorcades from Palo Seco to the Southeastern coast. “They (the players) worked hard. They are a bunch of unknown footballers who wanted to be out there. And, this was for them,” said LaForest.

The former national assistant coach and standout striker, La Forest is not putting his head on a block for the idea of Guaya’s participation in top flight football, but said there is mutual respect and interest between the club and the TT Pro League. “Management has to decide on Guaya’s next step.”

The team will be the recipient of $200,000 allocated to the title winner. Club Sando will take $100,000, in addition to the $75,000 prize for winning the NSL knockout title last season. LaForest said most, if not all of the prize money will go back into the team’s development and football in surrounding communities.

Subvention from who? If they apply to play pro, where will they be playing. Can BP sponsor them?

‘Super’ La Horquetta in Big League
T&T Express Reports.

STRIKER Keron Clarke took his series tally to seven goals, as La Horquetta Sporting Academy won 2-1 over nearest rivals Coosal’s Las Lomas Utd, to take the 2014 National Super League Qualifying series (formerly Champion of Champions) with a round of matches still to go.

La Horquetta have now won promotion to the semi-professional National Super League for the first time in their three-year history. They end the qualifying series away to Petrotrin Palo Seco, who moved to second with a 2-1 home win over Mathura Reunited on a pair of Jamaal Ayres goals.

Petrotrin can clinch the second qualifying spot to the Super League, if they beat La Horquetta on Sunday.

Last Sunday, Clarke and Anslem Jackson both scored for the second consecutive time as La Horquetta visited Madras Grounds, Cunupia, to meet the Central champions Las Lomas. Jackson gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead in just the seventh minute, before Clarke doubled it in the 77th. Carlon Hall gave the home team some hope with an 80th minute consolation goal.

Twenty-six year-old  Clarke have scored in all four rounds of the competition, getting the winner in a 1-0 win over Tobago champs Goal City, then getting all four when beating North champions Queen’s Park 4-1. Both he and Jackson also scored in 2-1 away victories over Matura Reunited and Las Lomas.

Based in the La Horquetta Housing Project off Arima, La Horquetta SA have had a remarkable run for a three-year old club. Unsponsored, the team consists of players in the community and environs, who are not even paid a stipend to play.

Their first season in the Eastern Football Association in 2012, ended as runners-up to Malabar FC, the 2013 third-place National Super League finishers. The following year, La Horquetta won the EFA League title by 15 points, and completed the treble by adding the East FA Trophy and President’s Cup knockout as well.

Palo Seco promoted to Super League
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Petrotrin Palo Seco won the second promotion spot into the 2014 Blink/bmobile National Super League football competition, following a 2-0 home defeat of already promoted series winners La Horquetta Sporting Academy.

Formerly known as the Champion of Champions tournament, the Super League Qualifying Series saw six champions of the 2013 zonal football competition battling over five match-days for two promotion spots into the semi-professional Super League.

Sunday’s final day of the series saw former T&TEC Pro League players Jamaal Ayres (54th) and Kern Peters (73rd) score twice in the second half for Palo Seco, to inflict a first defeated on previously unbeaten East champions La Horquetta.

The East champs had already won the series after four earlier victories.

Southern Football Association champions Palo Seco went into the final day of the competition in contention with Central champions Las Lomas United for the final promotion spot.

But Palo Seco would have qualified either way, since La Lomas were edged 2-1 by Queen’s Park, which picked up a first win.

Ross Dowdeen (12th) and Chad Rocke (51st) gave the Parkites a two-goal lead, before Kareem Joseph scored a late consolation for La Lomas in the 82nd minute.

Having no chance of qualifying, the bottom team Mathura Reunited failed to make the trip to Tobago for their final match and lost by default to 2013 Tobago champions D’ Lime Bar Goal City.

2014 NATIONAL SUPER LEAGUE QUALIFYING SERIES RESULTS

Petrotrin Palo Seco 2 (Jamal Ayres 54, Kern Peters 73) v La Horquetta S.A 0

Q.P.C.C 2 (Ross Dowdeen 12 , Chad Rocke 51) v Coosal’s Las Lomas Utd (Kareem Joseph 82)

D’ Lime Bar Goal City won by defaults over Matura Reunited
