Walcott heads list of qualifiers
Published: Friday, May 10, 2013

Olympic men’s javelin champion Keshorn Walcott heads the list of local athletes who have attained qualifying standards for this year’s World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia, from August 10 to 18.

Walcott, Olympic bronze medallist Deon Lendore, World Championships bronze medallist Kelly-Ann Bapiste, and hurdlers Mikel Thomas and Jehue Gordon have all achieved the A standard for their events.

Walcott opened his 2013 season winning the men’s javelin at the TnT Elite Twighlight Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on May 3 with a distance of 84.39m, getting over the 83.50m standard for the event. Lendore clocked 45.00 in taking the men’s 400m at his season debut at the LSU Alumni in Louisana, USA, on April 20, surpassing the 45.28 standard. Baptiste zoomed to 11.06 in finishing second at the Jamaican Invitational on May 4. The World Champs A standard for the 100m is 11.28. Fellow sprinter Michelle Lee-Ahye also dipped under the standard with 11.07 at the President’s Classic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on April 6 but no wind reading was available at the meet. Mikel Thomas was faster than the 13.40 standard for the men’s 110m hurdles when he clocked 13.39 (personal best) at the Tom Jones Invitational in Florida on April 20. Gordon improved his season’s best time to 49.05 in placing second in the men’s 400m hurdles (standard-49.40) at Guadeloupe on Wednesday.

Commonwealth and Pan American multiple medallist Cleopatra Borel, Sparkle McKnight, Aleesha Barber and Rondel Sorillo are among the B qualifiers. Borel got past the women’s shot put B mark of 17.20 with her 17.75 victory at the TnT Elite Games. Mc Knight blazed past the 52.30 standard for the women’s 400m clocking 52.17 (personal best) to win the Sun Angel Classic title in Arizona on April 6. Barber dipped under the 13.10 barrier for the women’s 100m hurdles sprinting to victory at the Cayman Invitational on May 8 while Sorillo equalled the men’s 100m B standard (10.21) in winning in Guadeloupe on Wednesday.

Olympic 4x400m bronze medallist Jarrin Solomon missed the men’s 400m B standard (45.60) when he clocked 45.65 in finishing second at the Cayman Invitational while Wayne Davis II was short of the 13.50 mark for the men’s 110m hurdles with his 13.54 clocking on March 16. Kai Selvon was 0.07 seconds outside of the women’s 200m 23.30 standard with her 23.37 run on April 6.

Qualifying performances must be achieved from 1 October 2012 to 29 July 2013. The men’s 4x100m (38.10), 4x400m (3:59.40) and women’s 4x100m (42.31) relay teams have all gotten the required marks in 2012 as the qualifying period for relay teams is from 1 January 2012 to 29 July 2013. The women’s 4x400m missed the 3:33.00 mark by 0.03 seconds. The quartet of McKnight, Jessica James, Aleena Brooks and Shawna Fermin clocked 3:33.03 in finishing second at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships in Irapuato, Mexico, in July 2012.

Baptiste looks a genuine double threat for Worlds
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jun 25, 2013 at 10:41 PM ECT

Kelly-Ann Baptiste established herself as a genuine World Championship medal contender in both sprints with two sizzling runs at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, on the weekend.

On Saturday, Baptiste established a new Trinidad and Tobago record—10.83 seconds—in winning her seventh women’s 100 metres national title. The clocking was the fastest time in the world this year.

And on Sunday, the final day of the NAAA Sagicor General/NGC National Open Track and Field Championships, Baptiste captured the 200m title in 22.36 seconds—also a new T&T standard. She is joint-fifth on the 2013 women’s 200m world performance list.

But while Baptiste is certain to bid for precious metal in the 100m dash at the August 10-18 IAAF World Championships, in Moscow, Russia, the 26-year-old track star told the Express she has not yet made a decision on her participation in the longer sprint.

“I really don’t know. I actually told my coach if I don’t run a certain time by the World Championships, I’m not going to double. It (the time) was within this ball park, so that’s a good sign.

“I’ll see how I do on the Diamond League circuit against other competitors, and depending on those performances, I will make a judgment then.”

But even if Baptiste decides to chase one individual title in Moscow, her half-lap outings this season will not be in vain.

“I need to work on my speed maintenance towards the end of my 100, and also in the 200. Running the 200 is going to help me gather that in the 100 metres.”

Baptiste said that since she was nursing a quadriceps injury, recently, Saturday’s 10.83 run was particularly gratifying.

“After May I picked up a slight cramp on my quad, so I was out for a while, so it was just about coming out here and getting back some confidence in my execution of my race and just being excited to compete again. The time just came along with my excitement to be able to compete. I wasn’t expecting a 10.83, but it happened and I’m grateful for that.”

The closest challenger for Baptiste in Saturday’s century final was Michelle-Lee Ahye, the 21-year-old sprinter seizing silver in a personal best 11.06 seconds. The competition will be stiffer when Baptiste competes at the July 6 Meeting Areva IAAF Diamond League meet, in Paris, France.

The 2011 World Championship 100m bronze medallist is hoping her times in Europe, in the build-up to the 2013 Worlds, will be similar to what she produced at the Crawford Stadium on the weekend.

“I have to go out there and try to replicate my performance, and replicating it means executing it the same way that I did—whether it’s against Michelle and this type of competition, or whether it’s against Carmelita Jeter and Shelly-Ann Fraser, I have to be able to duplicate the same technical things that I did in this race. It gives me a gauge as to what I need to do when I go on the circuit.”

Bledman: Not going to get swelled headed

Bledman: Not going to get swelled headed
By KEVIN SUNICH Wednesday, June 26 2013

OLYMPIC silver medallist Keston Bledman said while he was happy to retain his national 100m title at the NAAA Sagicor/NGC Open Track and Field Championships at the weekend, he had a lot more work to do to prepare for the World Championships set for Moscow in August
.

Bledman stopped the clocked 9.86 with wind assistance of 3.2, ahead of double Olympic medallist Richard Thompson (9.91) and Rondel Sorrillo (9.99) seconds.

The two-time national champion said he felt good being able to retain the title especially with the fact that he had to initially run under protest after he was disqualified for a false start in the preliminary rounds.

“It was a good race, I was up and down during the race but I was able to hold on for the win.

“My coach told me no matter what is happening to study nobody and I did exactly that and I thank God for bringing me through,” said the double Olympic medallist.

He said it was not as easy as it seemed especially when you are the champion.

“Firstly that was what I came out to do.

“When you are at the top it is not easy to maintain since everybody is coming for you and I am trying to stay here for as long as possible.

“It was a great feeling to be able to retain my title,” said the national champion.

Nevertheless Bledman said there are some things he needs to work on if he is to compete with the other top ranked athletes in the world.

“I have things to work on and I have to go back to the drawing board to prepare for the world championships.

I am not going to allow this win to go to my head since other top athletes are doing well at the moment.

“Tyson Gay is running some great times and Bolt is Bolt, so I am just going back to the board and do what I have to do.”

He said while the Trinidad and Tobago athletes have not been clocking good times up to this point, this is a good launch pad for better things to come.

Bledman, by virtue of winning the 100 metre clash at the national championship was among the top three who have earned qualifying berths to the IAAF World Championship despite a number of unfavourable performances by the trio in previous international meets.

Meanwhile Bolt who was recently beaten by American Justin Gatlin in the 100 metre dash has rebounded with a sub-10 performance (9.94 seconds) to claim the key sprint event at the Jamaica National Championship.

On the other hand another American Tyson Gay produced the fastest time for the year, a scorching 9.75 seconds to take the top spot at the USA Natioal Championship that was also held at the weekend.

Ato, any predictions? We know Bolt taking 100 and 200..

How you think the Trinis will do? I say 2-4 medals. Maybe 5.

KAB 100m
Jehue 400mh
mens 4x400
women 4x100

I think we will get a surprised medallist.. Last year it was Lalonde and Keshorn..

W 4x100 has had an absolutely awful record dropping the stick when they can least afford to. This would be the year to get it right. M4x400 doesn't have a single person under 45 mid, unlike last year. I agree with KAB and Jehue for sure. Jehue could win the whole damn thing if he PRs.

I think so too. I feel this might be the year the women get it right. Maybe you can give them some advice?.. We long overdue for a medal in this event.

Not sure if you checked, Lendore ran sub 45 already. And Solomon ran 45.34. Quow and Lalonde have yet to run an A or B standard.. This time last year, we had no sub 45 runners, but 2 A and 1 B standards.. Regardless, I think we placing in the 4x400.

I am calling Jehue for gold. I think this is the year he finds his legs.

Calling for Lalonde to be the surprise again. He is a mentally tough athlete. Wouldnt be surprised if he does more than make the 200m final. Dont get me wrong.. I know he aint beating Bolt or Weir..

WATCH as Jason Livermore speaks with SportsXplorer Multimedia about him making Jamaica's team to the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, his preparations his first major international championships and his transformation from a passive athlete into a motivated sprinter. The Michael Clarke coached Livermore is a real surprise as pundits and fans alike never factored the Akan Track Club athlete in the mix of World Championships prospects, primarly because he was not a star athlete during his three years competing for the Red Hills Road based school. The 25 year old finished third at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Championships in June in a NEW PERSONAL BEST 20.13 and fifth in the 100m (10.18).

Have u checked the landscape of the 400m as of lately ? only 3 countries have 3 guys running in the 400 and most others have 1 alone.....T&T/Belgium/Dominican Republic has 2 entrants plus we have Lalonde and Renny who are both capable of running 44 splits ....so don't count them out...

T&T 4x4 men have a pretty good shot at medalling

Bledman leads TT sprinters into action
By STEPHON NICHOLAS Saturday, August 10 2013

NATIONAL champion, Keston Bledman, will get his first taste of action at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia today when the heats for the Men’s 100m event take off at the Luzhniki Stadium at 12.15pm TT time.

Also flying the red, white and black will be former Olympic silver medallist Richard “Torpedo” Thompson as well as Rondell Sorillo.

Bledman, the two-time national 100m champion, is yet to make his mark on the international stage individually, and has never made an Olympic or World Championship 100m final.

A 9.93 performance in June 2011 in Florida, his first-sub-10 clocking, turned heads but since then he has yet to push on. He became this country’s second fastest sprinter when he blew away the field at the National Championships to claim gold last year in 9.86. Again, though, the 2007 Pan Am Jr champ has not been able to reproduce that effort on the international circuit.

At 25-years-old, though, TT track fans will be hoping this is the meet he finally showcases his undoubted talent and possibly brings home a medal.

Thompson, 28-years-old, has repeatedly shown the ability to produce when the lights are brightest and the stage biggest as seen by his three Olympic medals and appearance in the 100m final at the 2012 London Games. Despite not reaching peak form throughout that year, TT’s second most decorated Olympic athlete, qualified for the individual final where he placed seventh in a time of 9.99.

With just a relay silver medal to show at the World Championships, though, Thompson would be hoping to at least qualify for the medal race and give it his all for more hardware.

All eyes, however, will be on Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt who is the firm favourite for gold in the 100m and 200m as well as with his compatriots in the 4x100m relay.

Bolt has been beaten this season by American Justin Gatlin but few will bet against the tall and powerful Jamaican regaining his crown. The absence of defending champ, Yohan Blake of Jamaica, weakens an already depleted field which leaves the race for the silver and bronze medals wide open. American Tyson Gay as well as Jamaica’s Asafa Powell have both withdrawn after testing positive for banned substances and their matter is currently before the IAAF.

The semi-finals and 100m of the Men’s 100m will be held tomorrow at 11.05 am and 1.50 pm respectively.

Bledman, Thompson, Sorrillo in 100 battle
By Kwame Laurence in Moscow

National champion Keston Bledman opens his bid for World Championship honours at Luzhniki Stadium, here in Moscow, Russia, today.

Bledman, 2008 Olympic silver medallist Richard “Torpedo” Thompson and Rondel Sorrillo will wear Trinidad and Tobago colours in round one of the men’s 100 metres dash, scheduled to start at 12.15 p.m. (T&T time).

The preliminary round of the event, for the slower men on the entry list, takes place from 2.10 a.m. Ten sprinters from the preliminaries will advance to round one.

In June, Bledman clocked a wind-assisted 9.86 seconds to retain his national title. His fastest legal run this season came at the Kuortane Games in Finland, last Saturday, the 25-year-old sprinter winning in 10.09 seconds.

Bledman told the Express that while he’s not satisfied with the clocking, he’s confident of doing well at the Moscow ‘Worlds’.

“Very high expectations. I’ve been training good and I feel good. I just have to go out there and put my best foot forward—do what my coach taught me, execute my race, and focus on bringing it back home for Trinidad and Tobago.

“Once I get into the final,” he continued, “anything could happen, as Hasely Crawford always tells me, so I’m going there to do my best.”

Bledman’s training partner, Tyson Gay is a notable absentee from the men’s 100m field. The American sprinter, who leads the world in 2013 with a 9.75 seconds clocking, withdrew from the Championships after testing positive for a banned substance.

Reigning champion Yohan Blake is injured, and will not defend his title. And his fellow-Jamaican Asafa Powell, the fourth fastest man in the world this year at 9.88 seconds, tested positive in June at the Jamaica Championships, and is not in Moscow.

Bledman said that though the 2013 world-leader and the 2011 champion are non-starters, getting to the podium will still be tough.

“Everybody would think because Tyson’s not there, and Blake’s not there, it might be up for grabs, but everybody’s coming to bring their ‘A’ game. I’m coming to bring my triple ‘A’ game, battery pack,” said Bledman, with a hearty laugh.

Six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt will bid to regain the 100m title he lost to Blake in Daegu, Korea, two years ago. The Jamaican sprint legend was disqualified for a false start in the final, clearing the way for Blake’s triumph.

American Justin Gatlin, the only man to beat Bolt in a 100m race this season, is hoping to repeat the feat here in Moscow.

Thompson, who finished second to Bolt in the 2008 Olympic 100m final in Beijing, China, has been “flying below the radar” in 2013. He has not been victorious in a final all season. The “Torpedo” was second to Bledman at the National Championships in a wind-aided 9.91 seconds, but his fastest legal clocking this year is 10.14—29-hundredths of a second slower than his 9.85 national record.

“It’s always good,” Thompson told the Express, “to be in the position I’m in right now. It puts no pressure on me, going into the Championship. The usual goal is to make the final.

“With Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell and some of the other big names excluded, it makes it easier for myself, Bledman, Sorrillo to try to sneak in there and sneak a medal. The first step to doing it is making the final, and anything is possible from there.

“I’ve been putting in some serious work,” the T&T track star continued, “and I’m confident with the work I’ve done so far. So, a lot of races, or a little bit of races, I have the ability to step up to the plate and do well when it’s time to.”

Commenting on his fitness, Thompson said: “I wouldn’t say 100 per cent, but good enough to get in there and make the final.”

At the 2011 World Championships, Sorrillo had the distinction of being T&T’s only male individual finalist. He finished seventh in the 200m championship race in 20.34 seconds.

In Moscow, Sorrillo will bid to repeat the feat, but this time in the 100m dash.

He told the Express his goals are: “Proper execution, and hopefully, make it to the final again.”

Sorrillo added that once the 4x100m team gels well, he expects a podium finish.

“We should be top-three again, as we always do traditionally.”

Team manager Dexter Voisin is also anticipating relay success, here in Moscow. T&T will be represented in all four relay events.

“We have the potential to do well in all the relays. Definitely, the 4x4 men are in a stronger position, and this team would have won bronze last year (at the Olympics). They have the inclusion of Renny (Quow), so they’re much stronger than last year.”

Voisin said that though none of the T&T sprinters have dived under ten seconds this year, he expects solid performances in the men’s century.

“Any athlete coming in with a sub-10 would have felt more comfortable, but based on feedback from the coaches, they will come on as the rounds go by. The athletes have been training very good. There are no concerns right now.

“The weather conditions,” the manager continued, “are not what we expected. We thought it would have been colder, but it’s warm.”

Relay women on Mission Moscow

The 14th IAAF World Championships will take on special significance for Trinidad and Tobago. For the first time in the history of the global track and field competition, the country will have representation in all four relay events.

Of the 10 medals earned by T&T at the World Championships, three came in the men’s 4x100 metres—all silver.

T&T appeared in the men’s 4x400m final at the 2005 Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Ato Modibo, Julieon Raeburn, Renny Quow and Damion Barry combined for sixth spot in three minutes, 01.60 seconds, but the team was later disqualified.

And there have been two championship race appearances for T&T in the women’s 4x100m. In 2009, in Berlin, Germany, T&T finished seventh. And at the Daegu Championships in Korea, two years ago, the sprint relay women improved to fourth, in 42.58 seconds. However, the T&T quartet—Kai Selvon, Kelly-Ann Baptiste, Semoy Hackett and Michelle-Lee Ahye—was disqualified following the imposition of a six-month ban on Hackett for a doping violation at the National Championships.

A T&T team has never been fielded in a World Championship women’s 4x400m relay. That will change next Friday, at the Luzhniki Big Sports Arena here in Moscow, Russia. Four women will represent the Red, White and Black in the opening round of the event. And all things being equal, Shawna Fermin will run one of the legs for Team T&T.

“Our first goal is to make the final,” the reigning national 400m champion told the Express, “and to break the national record again. That’s the main thing.”

Domonique Williams, who is also in Moscow as part of the T&T women’s 4x400m relay squad, is confident.

“We just need to make the final, and when we get to the final, anything could happen.”

At the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Championships, in Morelia, Mexico, last month, Fermin, Sparkle McKnight, Romona Modeste and Alena Brooks combined for gold in 3:30.64.

The clocking was a new national record, chopping almost two seconds off the old standard of 3:32.57, which had survived 26 years before finally being removed from the books.

Fermin said T&T’s participation in the women’s 4x400m relay, here in Moscow, is a stepping stone on the road to medal success at future World Championship meets.

“Yes, this is where it starts!”

But for the women’s 4x100m team, the journey is well under way. A medal seemed on the cards at the London Olympics, last year, but a baton bungle on the first exchange, between Ahye and Baptiste, ended the dream prematurely.

Reyare Thomas, a member of the T&T women’s sprint relay squad, told the Express precious metal is the goal at the Moscow Worlds.

“The expectation for the women’s 4x1 is to medal this time around...go out there and make Trinidad and Tobago proud.”

For those who missed the athletics action today there is a recap of the 4th part of today's  action on BBC iPlayer at this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0398f5h/Athletics_World_Championships_2013_Day_1_Part_4/

Athletics: World Championships - 2013 - Day 1, Part 4

Gabby Logan presents coverage from Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium as Mo Farah bids for more global glory on the opening day of the World Championships.

Farah became a double Olympic champion at London 2012 with victories in the 5,000 and 10,000m and it is over the longer distance that he goes for gold in Moscow.

Six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt and British medal hope James Dasaolu take to the track for the first time in the 100m heats, former world champion Christine Ohuruogu is in 400m action, and British record holder Shara Proctor makes her bid to reach the long jump final.

Analysis comes from Michael Johnson, Paula Radcliffe, Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson, with Steve Cram leading the commentary team.

News on Kelly-Ann Baptiste of T&T testing positive and withdrawing from World Champs is announced at 29:00 in the video during the Women's 400m Heats.

Baptiste, Kelly-Ann          14 OCT 1986  4x100 Metres Relay,200 Metres,100 Metres (shock positive test)
Hackett, Semoy               27 NOV 1988  4x100 Metres Relay,200 Metres,100 Metres (Recently lifted ban reissued)

So according to the latest news from Moscow, Kelly tested positive and is on her way back home and Semoy may have had to join her due to her recently lifted ban being reissued.

This leaves the following women athletes who are still in the individual 100m event and who will have to raise their performances to make up for the absence of both Semoy and Kelly from our Women's 4x100m relay team.

Both Michelle-Lee and Kai are still in the individual 100m and who knows if one of them can raise their game and make the Women's 100m final? So lets wish them both luck and hope they keep their spirits up.
Maybe Ato can pop to our camp and offer them all a motivational pep talk!

Regards our relay chances, I still think we can make the final with this depleted squad but our chances of medalling is now very slim unless one or two of the other teams mess up if we make it to the Women's 4x100m relay final.

Trying to understand the seeding for the men's 400m heats. One would have expected based on season bests that the lane draws would be fairer - e.g. Lendore in lane 8; Solomon in lane 1? Yet men with 47 and 48 second SBs in lanes 4 and 5.
