THA gives $.2m to football league.
T&T Guardian Reports.

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) will contribute over $215,000 in prize money to the Tobago Football League for its 2013 competitions, assistant secretary in charge of Youth Affairs and Sport Assemblyman Jomo Pitt disclosed at Wednesday’s post-Executive Council media briefing.

The league will run from June 1 to November 30 on recreation grounds across Tobago. Most of these grounds have already been lit or are in the process of having floodlights installed. Pitt said at the end of the season the grounds will be rested in preparation for the cricket season, which starts in January 2014.

He also told the briefing that laying of the Mondo track at the Dwight York Stadium was on schedule and, weather permitting, will be ready for use in August. However, he said, an assessment of work on the infrastructure at the stadium was still to be done by a consultant, who has not yet been appointed by the Sport Company of T&T.

Jomo said an Assembly committee will, however, be appointed to determine if the stadium’s infrastructure was safe for use in the meantime.

I'm in the running for the 1st Vice President position :)

TEAM NEW GENERATION PRESS RELEASE

Wednesday 20th May 2015

TEAM NEW GENERATION HOPE TO BRING RENEWED ENERGY, IDEAS TO TFA

The highly anticipated Tobago Football Association elections will take place on Wednesday 27th May. While it remains the island’s most popular sport, many have voiced their displeasure with the current state of football affairs. One person who is hoping to change this is Mr. Arlon James, who has decided to put himself up for President of the TFA. “Tobago’s football product is at a crossroads,” Mr. Arlon James stated. “We need to figure out how to bring the association, the on-field football product, sponsors, fans and general interest back to football in Tobago.”Mr. James is the head of a slate of candidates who call themselves ‘Team New Generation’.

Mr. Richard Goddard, on the slate as the 1st Vice President contender, supported Mr. James’ sentiments about the current state of football on the island. “There’s a serious gap as it pertains to youth development. We need to catch up, invest, re-invest, learn and teach the game. We need to love watching our children grow up on the field and in front of our eyes. We need to realise us adults have a major role to play per the growth of our children, villages and society though football.”

The other members of the slate who are contesting the elections are Mr. Davide Sonnylal (2nd Vice President), Ms. Nickema Williams (Secretary of Administration) and Mr. Jeremy Roberts (Secretary of Operations).

Sidey’s cut into Leeds lead in Tobago FA
By George Baptiste (T&T Newsday)

SIDEY’S made up ground on idle leaders Leeds United in the Tobago Football Association Premier Division on Sunday.

The men from Speyside shut out Roxborough Lakers 2-0 at the Cyd Gray Stadium to leapfrog the Lakers into second place.

The victory gave Sidey’s 28 points, just four back of Leeds United and they have two games in hand. Also in the Premier Division, Goal City whipped Mason Hall USSS 3-0 at the Moriah Ground while Stokely Vale edged Georgia 1-0 at Plymouth.

In Championshp, Division action, Signal Hll United hold a seven-point lead over Bethel United after their 3-0 victory over FC Goodwood at their home ground.

Bethel kept on their heels with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over third placed Lambeau at Mt Gomery.

Lowly Earlbrokes edged Charlotteville Unifiers 3-2 at at Goodwood, to join them at 10 points each. But in Division One, there were goals aplenty with Mt Grace United drubbing Youth Stars Developmental Team 11-0, and Belle Garden dumping Federal Northside 5-2. Also Hope Village Milan whipped St Clair’s Coaching School 5-2 and Calder Hall beat Mason Hall Police Youth Club 4-1.

Sidey’s on the brink in Tobago
By GEORGE BAPTISTE (Newsday).

SIDEY’S are on the door step of winning the Premier Division title.

Still with two games to play, the men from Speyside drew to within one point adrift of leaders Leeds United after their 4-0 shut out of Golden Lane in the opening match of a double- header at Mt Pleasant on Wednesday.

In the latter match however, Leeds saw their chance of taking the title diminish when they went under 2-1 to near-bottom of the table Goal City on a last minute goal by Jelani Jackson.

In that game, Anderson Taylor gave the Goal City team the lead shortly after halftime, but Stefano Wright levelled only for that late Jackson winner.

Earlier at Mt Pleasant, though, prolific Pavel Warrick scored a double while Brandon Benjamin and Akeem Jordan added one each to see off Golden Lane.

Now Sidey’s have 31 points while Leeds ended with 32.

At the Cyd Gray Stadium, Roxborough Lakers and Georgia FC played to a 1-1 draw.

Jelani Turner scored for Lakers while Carron Williams equalised.

Other scores on Wednesday, Signal Hill United clinched automatic promotion from the Championship Division when they trounced Carnbee/Mt Pleasant 8-1 to top the standings with 30 points with still one game to play.

Bethel United, who had been idle, finished runners-up with 21 points and Lambeau who edged Earlbrokes 2-1 were third on 20 points.

Other Championship Division results:

CHARLOTTEVILLE UNIFIERS (3) vs GOODWOOD UNITED (1);

FEDERAL NORTHSIDE (3) vs CALDER HALL FC (2).

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Tobago football fraternity mourns as player dies during match
T&T Guardian

A wake up call is what this sudden death of Andrew “Eman” Nancis was labelled as by Anthony Moore, president of the Tobago Football Association (TFA), yesterday.

According to reports, Nancis, 22, a central defender with the Earlbrokes football team, collapsed 25 minutes into a match against Bethel United, just after 6 pm on Sunday at Riverbanks Oval, Mt St George, Tobago.

It was the team’s third game of round three of the Championship Division League.

“As a result of this young man’s untimely passing, while doing a sport he loved, the TFA will now undertake to re-examine its systems in recruitment. This is the first time anything like this has happened on the island. We will take this opportunity to take a new look at what can be done to minimise such occurrences.

“This is a wake up call and we all need now to reflect on how we do things. We are asking the teams to re-examine their systems of recruitment of players and look at the entire medical screening process. This to make sure that Nancis’ death has some meaning and was not in vain,” said Moore.

In addition Moore said, the association is taking a second look at possibly making medical screening mandatory for the recruitment process of players since there 30-plus clubs and some 800 registered players, all of whom played amateur football.

He pointed out that unlike professional footballers, amateur players are not mandated to either take medical tests or provide medical reports. It is up to all footballers to make sure their health was up to par.

Yesterday, Nancis’ teammate and childhood friend, Isaiah Thomas, lamented the absence of emergency health workers or an ambulance at the match.

“It’s not a custom but they should use this as an initiative to ensure things like this are put in place. It’s sad because we had to wait on someone to die to look at doing this now,” he said while at the Pembroke home of Nancis’ grandmother, Rosie Nancis.

Thomas and Nancis both attended pre and primary school together in Pembroke and has played on the same team for the past four years.

Thomas said that players were never asked to do regular check ups or provide monthly or yearly medical reports.

His girlfriend of three years, Trevlyn Robley of Speyside, reiterated Andrews’ good health and pointed out that he was not a smoker but would take the occasional drink while liming.

First-aid training

Yesterday, Moore said it was ironic that in a meeting with the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), two weeks ago, the issue of providing training in CPR for a member of each team, was discussed and agreed upon.

“The tradition at games, was that no ambulance was present and in light of this the TFA had not only encouraged teams to look at having someone on their bench trained in CPR but had also taken the issue to the THA. The meeting had been to discuss funding for the development of football in Tobago,” said Moore.

2005: Keeno Dwayne Shade, 24 (Amateur)

On September 15, 2005, 24 year-old Guapo footballer, Keeno Dwayne Shade, collapsed and died after a football match at his hometown in Gonzales Village, Guapo. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Point Fortin Area Hospital.

2014: Kevon Carter, 30 (Pro-league)

Lance Cpl. Carter, 30, died of a suspected heart attack in February, 2014, after complaining of chest pains during a training session with his Defence Force football team at the Macqueripe Base Volunteers Grounds.

2013: Akeem Adams (Internationally)

Akeem Adams, 22, of Point Fortin, died after a series of complications which stemmed from a massive heart attack in Budapest, Hungary in September 2013. He passed away in December that year.

I don't wish to politicise this; however, the notion that this particular death is the "wake-up call" is ludicrous.

Why is it? Merely because it's supposedly first of its kind in contemporary times in Tobago?

Nonsense! Akeem Adams' passing should have been the wake-up call, and if not that, the Jamaican runner who died there roughly around the same time.

Perhaps this is another example of the bifurcated state of affairs regarding setting and executing policy across the needless divide between Trinidad AND Tobago.

Tobago football to get academy
By George Baptiste (Newsday)

THE TO BAGO Football Association (TFA) are planning to establish a Tobago Football Academy.

TFA president Anthony Moore stated this after member clubs approved the 2016 audited accounts of the Association, and the proposed 2017-2018 budget.

The academy, to be based at Kendal, will give the TFA a home to provide a “Home for Football” in Tobago in order to optimise its resources.

The announcements were made at the TFA’s Annual General Meeting attended by 16 of the 21 registered clubs while two others were afforded observer status.

This AGM was held under the new constitution on Tuesday.

In a news release issued, it stated that under the New Rules, club delegates must provide written authorisation in order to participate at the AGM.

In addition, member clubs were required to provide copies of their constitution audited financial statements and paid membership fees to the TFA.

Moore said, however, clubs are still coming to grips with the new FIFA/TT FA requirements.

Delegates would serve for four years under the constitution but can be removed at the AGM.

Moore and his team were elected into office unopposed since opposing candidates were declared null and void as they were nominated by a non-member affiliate.

Officers elected were: president Moore; vice-presidents Samuel Orr, Ryell Davis, Denise Winchester.

Ordinary board members are Kelvon Morris, Natasha Francis and Hayden Duke.

Meanwhile, clubs must obtain a CONCACAF C Licence in order to participate in competitions for the 2017 season.

And this year’s action in the TFA will begin on June 8 with the Second Division teams.

But Premier Division action is scheduled to kick off on June 24.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Charles’ brace takes Black Rock past Utd in FA.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

A brace from Kelvon Charles in the 7th and 39th minutes ensured Black Rock advanced in the Tobago Football Association’s (TFA) FA Cup Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Hills United on Sunday at the Mt Pleasant Recreation Ground.

After Charles’ double strike, team mate Ronaldo Acosta added a third in the 76th minute to kill all chances their opponents may have of coming back into the match. The Black Rock men joined seasoned campaigners Stokely Vale, who progressed by thrashing Moriah Youth 4-0 at the Signal Hill Recreation Ground at the weekend. The win came from a double strike by the prolific Lashawn Roberts.

Roberts may now be in contention for the ‘Golden Boots’ award at the end of the season as his two goals was followed by another single strike that led his team to a 1-0 triumph over FA Cup champions Signal Hill in a Premier Division encounter recently.

On Sunday however Onasi Forde opened the scoring for Stokely Vale in the 25th minute before the Roberts show in the 34th and 52nd minutes. Devon Leacock rounded off the scoring with a 57th item that sent a strong warning to their counterparts in the tournament.

Also advancing in the FA Cup at the weekend were Carnbee Mt Pleasant which fired three unanswered goals past Goodwood FC to prevail 3-0: Mt Grace got a single goal from Devon Edwards to pip Earlbrokes 1-0 at Mt Pleasant on Sunday: and Calder Hall hammered Mason Hall 4-0 at Signal Hill ground, courtesy two goals from Akelion Murphy.

Meanwhile in TFA Premier Division League action Stokely Vale edged Moriah 1-0: Gold City shut out Roxborough 2-0 and Leeds United shared the points with Georgia FC following a 1-1 draw at Mt Pleasant.

RESULTS:

FA CUP:

Black Rock FC 3 (Kelvon Charles 7th, 39th, Ronaldo Acosta 76th) vs Hills United 0

Stokely Vale 4 (Onasi Forde 25th, Lashawn Roberts 34th, 52nd, Devon Leacock 57th) vs Moriah Youths 0

Carnbee-Mt Pleasant 3 (Nave Roach 12th, Keanno Brathwaite 26th, Dario Holmes 90th) vs Goodwood FC 0

Mt Grace 1 (Devon Edwards) vs Earlbrokes 0

Calder Hall FC 4 (Akelion Murphy 50th, 60th, Kareem Tobias 43rd, Khudine Wiltshire 88th) vs Mason Hall PYC 0

PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE:

Stokely Vale 1 (Lashawn Roberts 66th) vs Signal Hill 0

Gold Cityy FC 2 VS Roxborough Lakers 0

Grassroots festival brings out kids in Tobago.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association’s Grassroots Festival moved to the sister isle this weekend with a coaching workshop and two clinics for kids between the ages of 6-11.

On Thursday  the grassroots coaching workshop was conducted by Anton Corneal, aimed at developing coaches on the island to offer their services to grassroots development. Also attending the weekend’s activities  from the TTFA is Vice President Ewing Davis who is currently acting as President in the absence of David John-Williams who is away on TTFA football business, and Technical Director Muhammad Isa.

Corneal said while emphasis will be on the rural areas, local coaching schools and academies as well as Primary Schools from various areas will also benefit. Development and sustainability are the two key elements of this programme. The TTFA plans to ensure that  kids in the rural areas more opportunity to play the game.

“We want to be sure that when we identify a talent within the age group that we can taken take the player or recommend that player to a more organised club in Trinidad and of course Tobago,”  Isa said.

“We have gone to over ten communities in Trinidad and this weekend the focus shifts to Tobago where there has been an abundance of talent over the years. They have produced players who have gone onto represent the country at the senior level and we are hoping to unearth more talent at the youth level.

The kids clinic took place at the Mt Pleasant Recreation Ground on Friday and another session will take place at the Canaan Recreation Ground on Saturday.

“The kids have enjoyed proceedings so far and it’s a pleasure for us at the TTFA to be able to bring this opportunity to them. The FA will continue to play its part in making the game more accessible to these kids and of course we are keeping our eyes out for the talent that can go to the next level,” Isa added.

Similar clinics have been held this year in Chaguanas, Morvant, Toco, La Brea, Moruga, Palo Seco, Fyzabad, Westmoorings, Blanchisseuse and other areas.
